Blackout: Pelosi turns off the lights as GOP demands action on drilling; Update: Video added; Update: Protest ends — with “God Bless America”

A transparent stunt but an awfully shrewd one. The cameras are off so we’re forced to rely on Politico for running updates. What a scene:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi’s refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess…
“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”
Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.
“You’re not covering this, are you?” complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor…
The scene on the floor is kind of crazy. Normally, members are not allowed to speak directly to the visitor galleries, or visitors are prohibited from cheering. But in this case, the members are walking up and down on the floor during their speeches, standing on cheers, the visitors are cheering loudly. Some members even brought in visitors, who are now sitting on the House floor in the seats normally filled by lawmakers, cheering and clapping. Very funny.
GOP whip Roy Blunt issued a statement asking all Republican House members who are still in town to come to the floor. Exit question: What are the odds that someone there will be smart enough to fetch a camcorder from one of the offices near the chamber and record this for YouTubing? Eric Cantor, the deputy whip, has shown some ‘Net savvy in the past. Chop chop.
Update: And no sooner do I write those words than I get a tip that Rep. John Culberson is taping — and Twittering! — outside the chamber. Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.
Update: The boss is pleased, especially with the use of new media to get the word out.
My main post on the House GOP revolt is here and I’ll keep updating it. But I’m breaking out a separate post on the Republicans’ very savvy use of Twitter to circumvent the Democrat blackout and overcome the absence of C-SPAN cameras– and their outreach to conservative blogs to spread the word.
This is the change we’ve been waiting for, Beltway GOP.
Finally!
Update: Pete Hokestra says Capitol Hill security is ready to shut down the party promptly at 4:30 lest the GOP reap any more goodwill from this than they already have. Meanwhile, Politico’s still updating fast and furiously. Money quote:
Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the dimly lit chamber is a “vision of the future by the Democrat Party: The lights are out, there’s no power, and the air conditioning is gonna go off soon.”
Update: It’s all over as of 5 p.m., carried off to the tune of “God Bless America.” NBC says even congressmen not known for oratory caught the fee-vah in the chamber. Says Mike Pence, “We will be here through the break.”

Well that is great. And sounds like he’s happier with it this way anyway.
They’re playing the Culberson video on CSPAN now.

That’s the spirit. The first test is the hardest, now he knows how it goes, I bet he gets it for sure next time.

I cannot believe that the media is so much more interested in who brought race into the presidential election debate — a question with a clear-cut and utterly predictable answer — than in this House rebellion, which I consider to be historic in nature and of much, much, MUCH higher interest to voters.

Not as good as Bipple (50% Beer + 50% Ripple).
See Fred G. Sanford.
After a hard days work, Fred reaches for the soothing refreshment of a bottle of Ripple. Over the years, Fred’s love affair with Ripple has inspired him to create such concoctions as Mintchipple (Mint julep + Ripple); Cripple (Cream + Ripple); Champipple (Champagne + Ripple); Beaujolipple (Beaujolais + Ripple); and Manischipple (Manischewitz + Ripple).

There’s nothing like that feeling of something’s happening.

Heh, well if the police got involved that changes things. Really, most congresscritters aren’t the type to cause trouble for policemen.

Funny thing is, the test took him an hour, and he passed. He didn’t put any effort into his package. If he had made it, I would have lost all faith in the Navy advancement system. He has advanced everytime before first time up, so maybe this is a good thing.
/speaking out of jealousy as it took me 3 times to make E-5
What a Friday, though.
Anna on August 1, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Obama is still not injecting race into this election.
Lily on August 1, 2008 at 6:31 PM
The MSM doesn’t realize it, but we played a small part in history today. That’s cool.
Ordinary1 on August 1, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Am I allowed to say Obama is as useless as tits on a bull?
Cause that’s how I feel.
Anna on August 1, 2008 at 6:33 PM
E-5 was easy back in 84 or whenever it was that I received that promotion. Of course, it was a different military back then.

Allah,
Is there some kind of prize for the 1000 poster?
Maybe an autographed photo of the “Boss” or something.
Or a photo of you.
Just askin’

Sounds like it was fate then, I’d hate to see him lose faith in the Navy over it. I bet he has plenty of chances for that as it is. lol
Lily on August 1, 2008 at 6:34 PM
I wish the folks on Twitter had updated more often. Maybe they’ll get a sense that people across the country were trying to follow the story.
And I hope everyone here joined today and put your name in Hoekstra’s and Culberson’s follow list. Numbers matter.

It was hard for linguists when I was testing… we were mostly push-buttons to E4, so there was a surplus trying to make E5. I may be out, but I’m still a tad competitive with my husband.

He always has to start with something like, “My interest is”.
RushBaby on August 1, 2008 at 6:45 PM
They’re discussing it on CNN. Lib guest says Repubs looked like children arguing in the dark. Other guest mildly praised Repubs for doing something different to bring attention to Pelosi’s refusal to let them vote on this issue. Cafferty argued for term limits, stating that this is proof that the whole legislature and process is broken.
Caption at bottom of screen: “You need a break, they take a break: Lawmakers leave work behind.”

Niiice. Mandarin is a toughy, my favorite roommate at DLI is a ChiLing. I was Russian, too tone deaf for Mandarin (and decided against Arabic, pre-9/11). Good for him, though.
And yeah, I wanted orders to Hawaii something fierce. Nice base out there.

You are not understanding sister. He is playing the politician game.
He is tacking to the center in order to get that vote. His core beliefs are shown in his voting record.
IOW…and the words of his very close mentor, the now famous Rev. Wright, he will say anything to get a vote.

I may have to try one when I’m out tonight.

I tell ya, I’m sorely disappointed with the lack of off-line reporting about this. As I said before, even if the MSM was covering it as a useless political stunt, it should still be out there for everybody to see. I have little faith in humanity, but even I think some people would see the light if they caught wind of this.

They will refuse of course. These clowns think they are immune to the will of the people. The airheads are in line for some comeuppance.

I’m surprised about C-Span shutting off. More than once, I have seen congress critters speaking to an empty chamber, reading something into the record.
Madame Speaker, we are paying for those cameras!

Did anyone watch the ABC or CBS reports? If so, was anything spoken about the republican revolt or was it swept underneath the rug like NBC?

Hmmmm…
She effectivly stifled debate on the house floor, and stoped cameras from being there (as one fox reporter said, they tried twice to get a camera in there)…
Is it time for a Free Speech and debate arguement?

Seriously, I’d like to hear a constitutional lawyer’s opinion on whether or not the Republicans in the House have grounds to take legal action on this. It seems like several aspects of this skirted the edge of constitutionality.

Hey, this might have been just a token protest by the House Repubs, but it IS quite interesting to see how their (brief) actions have lit up quite a few folks like us.
Imagine what they could do with a well-organized, sustained action?
I would say that Pelosi is nervous, but that would give her credit for having human emotions. Or being human. Which, obviously, she is not.

I dunno, he might surprise us. Especially if enough of us call to push the issue. He’s a lame duck, and this might be one of the last things he can do to help the Republicans in Congress to stop the hemorrhaging of seats in November. I think he wants to help Republicans…hard to tell sometimes.
