Video: Sarah Palin on the Wooten “scandal” and on being VP

Get yourself up to speed by reading this nifty recap from Monday’s Anchorage Daily News. Nutshell version: She fired Walt Monegan, her commissioner of Public Safety, for reasons that are unclear. Monegan claims it was because he refused to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, Palin’s former brother-in-law against whom she’s supposedly had a longstanding vendetta. What’s her problem with Wooten? Like I say, read the ADN piece, which is brimming with colorful nuance involving tasers and “f’ng lead bullets.” She insists the Monegan decision had nothing to do with family issues, but the state legislature voted this week to order a probe, which is probably enough to scare McCain away in case he was thinking of going in this direction.
Monegan’s firing, incidentally, came just three weeks ago. Exit question: Would any sane politician with a shot at the national ticket and a reputation for ethics do something so scurrilous and petty while she’s being vetted? It’d be one thing if she sank Monegan last year, when she thought no one was looking, but she did this with the eyes of conservative America upon her. The dirty version is implausible under the circumstances. I question the timing.

Sarah Palin. Tougher, in Alaska.
wise_man on July 31, 2008 at 9:09 PM
If he picks Palin he can win. This time the VP nominees will matter. PALIN! PALIN! PALIN!
D0WNT0WN on July 31, 2008 at 9:10 PM
Exactly.
Regardless, this woman is charismatic and capable. McCain could do far worse.
Spirit of 1776 on July 31, 2008 at 9:12 PM
If he chose her, this would be the first VP candidate that I would find myself very attracted to.
Oh, exception Joe Lieberman.
carbon_footprint on July 31, 2008 at 9:12 PM
It doesn’t matter what the facts of the case are, all that matters is that she is a Republican and being “investigated.” Now, if she were a Dem, there’d be no probe.
coldwarrior on July 31, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Probe this. They come after all McCain needs to do is turn to whatever reporter is asking about this and say “You all have gotten a chance to get to know my mother. You’ve become acquainted with my wife. Some people seem to be afraid of a strong woman. I’m not” That gets him a few million pumas instantly.

PALIN FOR VP !!!
stenwin77 on July 31, 2008 at 9:13 PM
And Palin fired this guy???????
Chuck Schick on July 31, 2008 at 9:14 PM
Why is this guy screaming at her?
jimmy the notable on July 31, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Yeah, probably. Unfortunately. He’s definitely not being a risk-taker in this race.
Me, too. Awfully convenient timing. It looks like it will come to nothing — she’s being very open and cooperative. But by the time it becomes clear that it was a scurrilous accusation, the VP selection will long since have been made.
aero on July 31, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Mmhm.
Purple Fury on July 31, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Palin doesn’t want to be VP right now. She has an infant son, Trig, who is going to require a lot of her time and attention for the near term. She has her priorities right. Which is why she’d make a wonderful candidate in 2012.
coldwarrior on July 31, 2008 at 9:17 PM
But she’d have to get in line behind McCain’s VP if he wins.
aero on July 31, 2008 at 9:19 PM
I’m certainly not impressed. She doesn’t even want the VP job. Heck. She even belittles the job.
Let her sit up there and be Queen of Alaska reigning from her bully pulpit over her 670,000 inhabitants (100,000+/- of which are drunken Eskimos). Who cares.
SilverStar830 on July 31, 2008 at 9:19 PM
Has anyone noticed a lot of coincidences lately?
Seriously though, wouldn’t this endear Palin to the feminists? The guy seems totally abusive.
ninjapirate on July 31, 2008 at 9:21 PM
If McCain chooses Lieberman, it won’t matter in 2012. The field will be wide open. Me? I’m looking at a Palin-Steele ticket in 2012.
coldwarrior on July 31, 2008 at 9:22 PM
She was fantastic!
¡PALIN! now more than ever!

ninjapirate on July 31, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Does that anchor have some kind of movement disorder?
mikeyboss on July 31, 2008 at 9:24 PM
I took her questioning of what would be expected of her in the VP’s job as her letting McCain know that she’d only be interested if he intends to allow her to take an active role in the administrations and make a difference. She said, “When somebody can tell me what the job would entail” or something like that. We all know the basic duties of the VP, and I’m sure she does, too. I think she wants to know if McCain is looking for a powerful Cheney-like VP or a weak backgrounder like Quayle.
aero on July 31, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Palin is great! The libs/prosecutors are trying to get Palin down for a nonsensical reason so McCain would fall into a trap in not choosing a hands-down winner for the GOP in 2008. McCain you better not fall for this junk. Palin is the best choice for VP and for you to engage us conservatives in voting for you.
jencab on July 31, 2008 at 9:25 PM
If you were the parent of a newborn (3-months old) infant just diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, would you jump into the campaign circus? Trig is her first priority right now as a parent. Setting Alaska on the straight and narrow is her first priority as an elected official. Running off to the lower 48 is not on her to do list.
coldwarrior on July 31, 2008 at 9:26 PM
Palin is the best choice. Cut out Obama’s heart. Hit him where it hurts. Let him have the girls. Take the women. That will destroy him. Plus guys love her too. She’s like political Irish Spring!

It would be great if Palin would become VP, but I think it’s pretty unlikely. She has, though, handled this non-scandal scandal very well.

She’s not ready, however, to be VP. A GOP governor actually says something associating the VP slot with “what’s it going to do for Alaska” … ?? Hello? National ticket calling?

canopfor on July 31, 2008 at 9:32 PM
I find her utterly charming. The dialect, the spunk – “what does the vp actually do every day?” – she’s pretty funny. And she certainly doesn’t seem worried about this cabinet firing.
Jaibones on July 31, 2008 at 9:32 PM
Answer: Duh, Because she is not the calculating sort that looks at the timing of things, just whether they need to get done or not. McCain would be a FOOL if he passes on this charismatic, likeable…ELECTABLE…Republican.
CapitalistPig on July 31, 2008 at 9:32 PM
She just takes Trig with her, and sometimes Piper, too, and continues doing her job.
We women don’t stop living life because we have kids. Even kids with special needs. She’s also not a single parent.

All Veep candidates do that. You never publicly show that you are interested. It tips your hand.
Sarah would be great at Veep. She could really push the energy initiatives of a McCain White House.

I’ll vote for McCain, but I’d campaign for Palin. Anyone who feels the same way should communicate that sentiment to the campaign directly. The choice has not been made yet.
D0WNT0WN on July 31, 2008 at 9:34 PM
That was scary.
Before she can think about the VP job, somebody has to explain what a VP does??????????? Holy hell. That sounded fake AND dumb.
Obviously, she is out to get a dude that she thinks screwed over her sister….corruption charges may stick..and now with that weenie Stevens also from Alaska…this broad aint up for the gig.
Pick Mitt. Mitt has more experience and brains in his little toe than this chick does in her whole body.
Roger Waters on July 31, 2008 at 9:36 PM
Wow. Some of you are totally excited about her. Hope some of you guys are still enthused 4 or 8 years from now because she’s not going to be McCain’s VP.
terryannonline on July 31, 2008 at 9:37 PM
Vice President Naughty Librarian may help pull some Clinton supporters to McCain’s side. Especially if Obama — the guy they feel used misogyny — picks a guy.
amerpundit on July 31, 2008 at 9:39 PM
Gee Roger…that was impressive. Just when I was thinking what a great country this was because a WOMAN was being picked by many REPUBLICANS as their choice as the #2 on a national ticket, you came all the way back from 1923 with that impressive display of ignorance and boorishness. Between me and you, this “broad” has more brains than you show from that trogloditic post. Now, get back to scratching your privates and have your “chick” get you a beer.
CapitalistPig on July 31, 2008 at 9:41 PM
That segment didn’t do her any favors. I don’t think she is ready for prime time. May be all the good things said about her, but her comments about the vice presidency were out of line and indicated a lack of decorum.

multiuseless on July 31, 2008 at 9:44 PM
aero, yes, she takes the kids with her, often, not just show them off once in a while as decoration like too many pols do.
But, seriously, as a parent myself (five kids) if any of them had something as serious as Trig, being at such a young age knowing there are some very easily obtained complications of infants with downs syndrome, would you as a parent subject that infant to the rigors of travel and campaigning or just leave the kid, with whom you may have extremely limited time back at home? I know infantile downs syndrome and attendant complications…we buried my young niece last year.
It isn’t about “women don’t stop living.” It is about setting personal priorities.
I spent a career in and around DC and overseas among our political appointee and foreign service elites, and found it pretty disgusting that a lot of power player parents had multiple nannies so they could do all the wonderful political stuff, and have the kids as some sort of decoration.
If Palin decides to take a VP offer, this election season, my respect for her will be serverely diminished. I quit a high-end federal career in order to be a 24/7 single parent of four of my five kids [#5 was 20 when I got divorced] Best decision I ever made.
It is all about priorities…

Well, you can call me names, but that sounded STUPID. Uh, I might consider the VP slot and soon as somebody explains to me what a VP does cause I am used to being great and doing great things and stuff blah blah blah.
That comment was worthy of Hillary Clinton.

I like Palin just fine, but right now Alaska is having some issues. There are young Republican Governors in both Alaska and Louisiana and it might be a good idea for them to accomplish more in their current jobs rather than jump into the national elections.
This lady is personable and attractive, but if there is some scandal going on in her administration, it might be a bad idea to bring her into the national spotlight right now.

Successful governors cleaning up states with bad reputations are many magnitudes more likely to be elected President than sitting US Senators. We’ve only had two sitting US Senators elected President in the past century. Lots and lots more governors.

Okay, I just watched the segment again, and I’m pretty sure that the part about what the VP does is her saying she would be McCain’s VP if they will assure her that he’ll let her work for more drilling and domestic energy production. She’s saying “What’s in it for me and for my state? Otherwise, I’ll keep the cool job I have, where I know I can work for the benefit of the people who made me their governor.” She has made clear many times that domestic energy production in Alaska is one of her very top priorities. She wants the leash off Alaska, now.

Governors?
Terrye, one of my personal favorites, Haley Barbour down in Mississippi, has been doing a superb job, too. Is term limited in 2011, is in his second term. Love the guy. First met him about 20 years ago, and he ran the RNC in the ’90’s. Was a good part of that Contract With America along with Newt Gingrich. If he gets out there in 2012, things could get interesting in the primaries.
coldwarrior on July 31, 2008 at 10:05 PM
First Jewish governor of Hawaii, first Republican governor in decades, has no kids, is twice-divorced and currently single. Served as the chair of the 2004 RNC, signed the Sex Offender Registry Website Law into law, has created a $730 million surplus, lowered unemployment.
She has high approval ratings, having won reelection in the largest landslide in state history — 63%-35%. Oh, and she’s been attacked by the ACLU.

Well, Indiana is the only state whose economy is growing the fastest in the Midwest. We have the lowest unemployment rate in the Midwest (almost half of Michigan, my home state).
