Andrea Mitchell to McCain’s campaign manager: How come you keep calling Obama that “C-word”?

posted at 4:31 pm on July 31, 2008 by Allahpundit

The “C-word” in question being — gasp — celebrity. It comes at around 10:45, but to get a fuller flavor of the exchange you should watch the first three or four minutes before skipping ahead to that point and then letting it play out. In Mitchell’s defense, Davis never quite gets to the crux of the “celebrity” jab; for that, see Lindsey Graham’s succinct description of the ad as being about “the idea of fame without portfolio.” Precisely. Or better still, go watch the old clips of Hannity playing stump the band with Democratic focus groups. The point isn’t that Obama is spectacularly famous, it’s that his fame is out of all proportion to his actual accomplishments. It’s 95% image, a fact implicitly recognized in how easily his fans lapse into creepy iconography. But since McCain can’t call Obamamania what it really is — a benign cult of personality — he reached for the nearest, most innocuous synonym he could find. At the very least, “celebrity” is closer to the truth than, say, “statesman.”

As I say, watch the first few minutes (if only to see her play dumb about the race card) and the last few, when she wonders why the campaign is so interested in petty details about Obama’s shopping habits even as the nutroots obsess about the price of McCain’s shoes. Her contempt really shines through in the last 20 seconds, so at least don’t miss that. Exit question: Davis doesn’t seriously think the Obama campaign is feeding lefty bloggers disingenuous demagogic talking points on race, does he? Why on earth would they need to?

The point isn’t that Obama is spectacularly famous, it’s that his fame is out of all proportion to his actual accomplishments.

Hmm if the messiah is famous, and let us say after this political stuff is over, what do you think he will do afterwards and where do you think it will be?

How tempting. But refuse to do it.

“the idea of fame without portfolio.”

I like it!

But “cult of personality” is much more on-target. And that’s scary.

NeighborhoodCatLady on July 31, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Let’s hope BO has 15 minutes months of fame, & not four years.

Akzed on July 31, 2008 at 4:40 PM

One part I love is when she starts suggesting other celebrities team McCain could have used. Tom Cruise, she says, or Bono. As if it is up to McCain to flatter Obama.

(not to mention how problematic any comparison to Tom Cruise would actually be, considering his alleged gayness, his problems with Scientology in Germany, and his upcoming portrayal of a nazi).

Wanted to note this directly from the San Diego Comic-Con via PSP wireless, but it, of course, wouldn’t display the comment box.

What, you ask, was a major “Comic-Con exclusive” piece of artwork, selling by itself and on t-shirts?

Why, Obama as Superman. The “S” was replaced with an “O”, but it was obviously a reference to the classic “Clark Kent revealing the Superman logo” pose.

Audacity indeed.

I suppose I should give the cult credit for being honest about their feelings towards him.

I await the serious pictures of Obama as Jesus.

Weeeelllll, if the MSM would start focusing on his background, on his “achievements”, his years in the senate, then we wouldn’t have to focus on what his real attribute is…an entertainer, a charismatic entertainer.

ilitigant on July 31, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Andrea Mitchell is the most faux ‘objective’ reporter around. She tries so hard to portray “objectivity”, in a prima donnaish, lacrima cristi way, and fails direly to those of us who can read it from afar, and instinctively.

She thinks that her intense pretenses, and being married to the objectivist gives her more of an impulse to try harder, fool the rest of us.

If she doesn’t get more than one tingle in her panties, even more than Chrissie Matthews up his leg, every time she thinks of the potential Obama presidency, I ain’t hooked on HA.

BigD on July 31, 2008 at 5:01 PM

Andrea Mitchell is a well-known democrat cheerleader. She once had high praise for another distinguished democrat, Tah-Ray-Zah Ketchup (h/t Brat).

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell was mighty impressed by Teresa Heinz Kerry’s convention speech last night, insisting that “she completely innoculated herself against all the charges that she speaks too bluntly.” And Mitchell glared at MSNBC’s conservative host Joe Scarborough when he mildly suggested her speech “won’t play in Peoria,” predicting that there will be “one Teresa Heinz-Kerry moment that’s going to alienate a lot of people in middle-America.”

Mitchell shot back, “Now you know why there’s a gender gap. There’s a gender gap right at this table!”

Now Chris Wallace called Heinz-Ketchup’s performance that night evocative of Evita Peron. Obama is, in fact, the reincarnated Evita. Mitchell is a false idol worshipper. Apparently, that pays well. That she can be married to Greenspan is a mystery I haven’t solved yet, however, it does not reflect well on Greenspan.

Did someone load the wrong program into the Andrea Mitchell-bot?

This is one of the worst clips I’ve ever seen. She can’t even keep her speech correct without the help from the earpiece.

Davis says, “It’s not that Obama is upset with high gas prices, just that they’ve gone up so fast.”

To which Mitchell replies, “I’m not going to say ‘there you go again’ but there’s a lot to say about the allegation that barack obama wants gas prices to increase.”

Mitchell-bot might as well have been programmed by David Axelrod.
