Obama’s energy plan: drilling tires; Flashback: Obama on your shoulder!

posted at 4:35 pm on July 30, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Want to get an idea why Democrats have no clue on energy policy? Take a listen to Barack Obama explaining how we can get an extra 12 million barrels of oil a day. We can pull it out of thin air — literally:

There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy.  Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing.  But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires?  And getting regular tune-ups?   You’d actually save just as much!

Er, no it couldn’t.  The Green River oil shale formation could produce at least 800 billion barrels of oil alone, enough for over 100 years at our current rate of consumption (20 million barrels per day).  Would inflating our tires eliminate every single drop of oil we use?  Of course not!  Nor would it save any significant amount at all.  Tire inflation could improve gas mileage by about 3%, which would relate to about 600,000 barrels of oil a day at the most absurdly optimistic extrapolation.

Maybe the Democrats could use a tune-up on energy policy.  It looks like they’re still stuck in the 1970s, with tired, worn-out points and bad timing.  On energy, Obama is your father’s 1973 Oldsmobile.

Update: Tune-ups?  Most cars today don’t require tune-ups for the first 100,000 miles.  Some automotive mechanics recommend them every 30,000 miles, but it’s hardly the 5,000-mile requirement it used to be twenty-five years ago.

Jim Geraghty has calculated the potential savings, and comes up to 6 million gallons of gasoline a day (not a year as I originally wrote).  He’s also working off of an assumption of 10% improvement rather than 3%, which seems very high.  Has anyone noticed a 10% improvement in their gas mileage by pumping up their tires, ever?  On the other hand, we could be pumping millions of barrels of oil a day if Congress would stop blocking domestic oil production.

Update II: Geraghty’s calculation comes to about 330,000 barrels of oil a day, but at 3%, it would make it closer to 100,000 barrels of oil a day.  That’s not much of a dent in 20 million barrels of oil a day, 12 million of which we import.  I’d say we’d do much better by drilling and keeping our tires inflated.

On the other hand, what does this scolding recollect?  Obama On Your Shoulder!

next up police will be having tire check points and finning those that have impoper PSI readings. Every yearly inspection will require a $400.00 tune up.

The whole-eco movement is nuts. Wind, Solar, inflate your tires and dont use plastic bags at the store. We won WW2 with that kind of thinking? It doesn’t stand up to reason unless they want us to be living on the prairie in sod houses again.

Tell the fixed income couple in Wisc. in the fall, that they could have heated their home if they had inflated their tires.

My Dad got our 1969 Chrysler New Yorker Braugham in 1975. Much like the Caprice, it was a boat. Dad used to let me tan in the back window, while he was driving about 70 mph and smoking with the windows rolled up.

Good times. I loved that man.

Matticus Finch on July 30, 2008 at 4:46 PM

And getting regular tune-ups?

Uh, Barry, modern cars don’t need tuneups. Gone are the days when you needed to replace your points and plugs, have a carb adjustment and generally tinker with the engine to get it to run at its optimum level.

It’s all controlled by the onboard computer now. If something gets out of spec, the good old “check engine” light will let you know.

Barry says, “These aren’t the cars I knew!”

redshirt on July 30, 2008 at 4:52 PM

Universal health care…..Eh, could live without it.

Universal car care….Now there’s something I’m down for. If my vehicle breaks down, I won’t be able to work. If I can’t work, I can’t pay taxes. If I can’t pay taxes, I’ll be drawing unemployment. Therefore, it is more advantageous for the government to cover the cost of my car care as it is to my health care.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 30, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Is his assumption based on ALL Americans not having properly inflated tires or a percentage? If a precentage then what percentage? How much on average do these tire pressure criminals drive per year? So many questions, so few answers.

Getting all three of us kids in the back seat – my baby brother in the upright car seat with the bar across the front and attached to the seat with only a seatbelt – that was always an adventure. Good God but if we were in an accident he would’ve been launched through the front winshield after breaking several ribs on that bar. Of course he may have been the only survivor when the car burst into flames after a collision like that. :)

I loved that man.

Yeah… I miss my Dad.

jgapinoy on July 30, 2008 at 4:59 PM

But what about the poor folks that cannot afford to inflate their tires properly? Those coin-op machines are now up to a buck in Bush’s economy. There needs to be a tax credit for the working poor so that they can afford to inflate their tires.

The other important part of his energy policy is another round of rebate checks.

When you throw that in, that’s when you get the whole picture.

Tires are now the type where you have to have them checked… once a year. The no flat tire tires, the road guaged tires, and even the car that tells you to inflat your tires if the pressure is off.

Obama seriously isn’t mechanically inclines and has no idea about automobiles or the industries that work with automobiles, does he!

C’mon Nancy, what are you waiting for? Put that great plan of yours into action before the entire country grinds to a halt. Or is destroying the U.S. economy part of your master plan to save the planet?

AZCoyote on July 30, 2008 at 5:19 PM

When all of our tires are inflated, America will become a net exporter of oil.

Cicero43 on July 30, 2008 at 5:31 PM

Jeez…is he that fucking stupid or does he think we are?

Neither. To a man like Barack Obama there is no such thing as an objective fact. Therefore, it doesn’t matter to him what is actually the case, nor does he concern himself with whether his assertions match reality. The only thing that matters to him is how others feel about what he says. And, when it comes to innocuous nonsense, that tripe fits right in.

Politicos have just fallen in love with that “comprehensive” buzz word. Why can’t the “Dims” apply comprehensive to an energy policy that would do all of the things that would help us out. The “Dimwits” that say we can not drill our way out of this problem are ignoring the huge impact domestic oil production would have. Sure, we need to look at alternatives such as wind, solar, biofuels, hydrogen and what-not but writing off domestic drilling is insane.

AZ_Mike on July 30, 2008 at 6:09 PM

I can’t give you any national number, or even averages, but I can tell you this much: nearly half of the vehicles I work on have tires that are not at the proper pressures. I think this comes from a combination of things, including slow leaks people don’t notice, gauges at those coin-op compressors not calibrated, some folks just put air in until it “looks full” (which will be overinflated every time), and just plain old not bothering with it.

You want to save fuel, here’s a thought: Just drive EASY! Back off the the throttle a little earier coming to a stop, get into it a little easier, and follow whatever the posted speed limit is.
