Video: Thinly veiled viral corporate marketing ploy of the day

posted at 7:50 pm on July 29, 2008 by Allahpundit

Per the logo on the ball, I can only assume it’s Nike’s handiwork — although the design on the second girl’s sneakers looks sort of like Asics, doesn’t it? Hmmm.

Exit question: How much did Nike pay “Randy” for the use of his donut?

When will this be pulled for being ‘anti-gay’?

Janos Hunyadi on July 29, 2008 at 7:52 PM

Nike. It’s a Nike ball, Nike shorts, and the one girl (at least) has Nike sneakers.

Should I buy tennis shoes or donuts?

I’m confused.

I’d rather the donuts, to be honest.

:-/

heh…In any event, IS this a marketing ploy? Cripes, I’m IN advertising, and I can’t keep up!

JetBoy on July 29, 2008 at 8:05 PM

Why do they run away at the end? I mean, the girl retrieves the ball after the first attempt that was probably much more disruptive.

They should have done an ironic viral marketing attempt where when the ball goes through, the donut explodes. It wouldn’t make any sense, but then neither does this.

For entertainment, (maybe I’m the only one still entertained by this, but I don’t care) go to the youtube page and watch people argue over the realness of this video. There’s only a few unique opinions in all of the comments, but people will repeat the same arguments over and over.

Nice shootin Tex!

canopfor on July 29, 2008 at 8:11 PM

That second girl also had Nike shoes. You can see the little white-outlined swoosh on them if you look closely.

I don’t understand why they miss, go get the ball, then run away after getting it through the donut.

Just down the street from the Forum, where the Lakers used to play.
Don’t know about the present owners, but the donuts were always so-so, and the area a little less then so-so.

right2bright on July 29, 2008 at 8:21 PM

The Nike Soccer ball missed, the Commie soccer ball make it into the the hole.. ? ehh, what does that mean? not sure..

That is indeed the Randy’s Donuts shown in the picture, which was taken on the northeast corner of La Cienega Blvd. and Manchester Blvd. (Can’t see the video — firewall says uh-uh.) It’s been many years since I had one of Randy’s doughnuts, but as I recall, they were very good.

I wasn’t paid a dime!

That said, is that John McCain in the hat at 34 seconds?

RightWinged on July 29, 2008 at 8:26 PM

I gotta get away from politics. I was SURE that hole was going to be an Obama ad.

RushBaby on July 29, 2008 at 8:37 PM

Cute. Nice shot. Although that’s a horrible intersection to be monkeying around when traffic is flowing.

Also I have seen someone beaten to a bloody mess for hitting someone’s car with a ball.

right2bright on July 29, 2008 at 8:21 PM

The area is on the border of inglewood, Los Angeles and Westchester. Many homes in the area are 4-700k….a year ago. It’s not a crime ridden area….until you head due east a few minutes.

What makes an area less than so-so? It can’t be all bad, there’s a great pistol range next door. :)

The doughnuts are not the best.

The Race Card on July 29, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Downer man talks:

Er…being that I am in the Recreation field proper, running kids sports and stuff….

Does anyone else think that kicking a ball over oncoming traffic was a bit dangerous and maybe one of the kicks could have gone awry and hit the window of one of the cars, causing an accident?

Just thinking aloud. I would have freaked a bit if that ball had hit my passenger side while making that turn.

Downer guy done.

Scoreboard44 on July 29, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Do you realize how much that ball costs!?

She could have donated it to a local homeless shelter to help the needy children, but NO she just had to kick it away and then run away like a little girl.

Do these yutes of today have no shame!.

Rant over.

1GooDDaDDy on July 29, 2008 at 8:40 PM

There were two “Yutes”.

Right2bright and Race Card, I guess I’m just not as fussy about my doughnuts as you guys! But then I am an engineer… and we eat just about anything, if you put it out on a conference table. ;-)

Been a few years, but I was thinking more under the freeway, or up towards the Forum/Race track and Imperial….$400,000 is that with the bars on the windows, or without?

right2bright on July 29, 2008 at 9:23 PM

If it’s fake, they got me. The earliest post I can find for the video is 3 weeks ago by the Santa Monica High School girl’s soccer team.

I wanna see a parody were they miss and knock the doughnut over or into the street causing a pile up and many crunchings.

We’re being too serious, this was a fun thing to do for a few young girls that got them on uTube.

No big-thinking ad. Lighten up!

How many windshields (to say nothing of Randy’s storefront windows) will be shattered by aspirants to recreate that feet, er – feat?

and we eat just about anything, if you put it out on a conference table

Me and a guy I used to work with knew this so we decided to perform an experiment.

We “made” some stale bread at home by leaving it out overnight on the table. Then, we cut off the crusts and displayed them elegantly on a serving dish with small bowl of yellow mustard in the middle. By the end of the day, everyone of those crusts (and most of the mustard) were gone.

We never told anyone and I still laugh about it almost 20 years later.
