New RNC ad: The German Obama ad that never was

posted at 2:25 pm on July 29, 2008 by Allahpundit

Between this and the fake Obama Facebook page, it looks like they’re starting to take Huckabee’s advice about lightening up a bit. That’s good news; Barnett’s totally right that Huck’s approach to defusing the Obama hype would have been more effective than Grumpy’s.

The bad news is, er … maybe this wasn’t the best day to go knocking Media Matters for amateurishness. I get what they’re going for with the goof on German techno, but how many older voters will get it and not end up simply scratching their heads and wondering, “What the hell is this?”

Perhaps they are not targeting older voters with this add?

With a quick change of accent, these goons could pass for Americans.

With a quick change of accent, these goons could pass for Americans.

LimeyGeek on July 29, 2008 at 2:30 PM

You got it backwards Limey. It’s that some Americans with a change of accent could pass as Europeans.

lorien1973 on July 29, 2008 at 2:40 PM

I see what they’re going for, but…weird.

CP on July 29, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Well, OK premise, but could have been done a little more effectively. Tone down the tech(NO) and hammer home a better point than Hasselhoff.

Hunt035 on July 29, 2008 at 2:41 PM

So Hasselhoff is BO’s VP?

jgapinoy on July 29, 2008 at 2:42 PM

It pretty well illustrates how Obama has given so many “hope.” If only he could give them brains.

#10 in the Univerally Award Winning Series: This is Barack HUSSEIN Obama’s (PBUH))(SWT)(SAW)!:

This is Obama’s Brain: Bis’mallah Ar Rahman wa Ar Raheem….Mohammed Rasul-ullah!

This is Obama’s Brain on Drugs: 99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man fuer UFOs aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
Eine Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn es so war
Dabei war da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons

Dale in Atlanta on July 29, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Rush and Paul Shanklin are so much better than this (and better than John Stewart IMHO). The latest was “One Day in Baghdad” to the tune of “One Night in Bankok”, with the chorus of MSM reporters singing “I can feel the ‘tingling coming over me!”

Marcus on July 29, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Great concept! A vote for Obama is a vote for epilepsy.

MB007 on July 29, 2008 at 2:46 PM

A little Technoviking may have been a good addition.

forest on July 29, 2008 at 2:49 PM

I don’t think this is so bad, The older voters aren’t going to look around at Youtube for these ads, and I doubt they’ll run this on a TV station in Oct.

If he has a team just tossing these things together everyday then each new one is only more practice for when they need to create good ones.

Rbastid on July 29, 2008 at 2:50 PM

lorien1973

EXACTLY!!!!!! When Obama can make it to BREITBART TV like THIS, maybe he’ll be worthy. Until then? Not so much.

“What the hell is this?”

They might have been going for that too.

Queasy on July 29, 2008 at 2:53 PM

These attacks would be effective if McCain systematically articulated his governing philosophy. McCain and the GOP do not own any issues. There is no emphases whatsoever. It’s all vague and they’re reactionary. They GOP should focus hard on community, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

I really feel inspired to become a “citizen of the world” after that one . . . not.

I thought the David Hasselhoff bit was funny!

I absolutely agree. And the Constitution. I don’t think Obama actually believes in limits on government power, and that’s incredibly dangerous. McCain should come out and argue, for example, that Obama’s health care proposal is unconstitutional. I don’t think Obama could argue back on that.

kc8ukw on July 29, 2008 at 3:04 PM

“I have friends in America who are Marxist, and they’re working for Obama”….

Should have been the focus/point of the ad. Too much distraction

Who is going to see this ad? Isn’t it just for a bit of a laugh? I doubt it’s going to play in Boca.

They should have at least cranked up the techno…

Lance Murdock on July 29, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Euro snobs know all about the USA while Islam eats their lunch. This is coming from the intellectual gene pool that brought the world two of the worst wars in human history. I am surely going to listen to their opinions, nicht.

Hening on July 29, 2008 at 3:11 PM

My grandpa is stuck on the fake Facebook page right now. He keeps trying to poke Obama, and Obama isn’t poking back, and Grandpa feels slighted.
“It’s a fake Facebook page, Grandpa,” I say. “It isn’t really Obama’s.”
But he is so confused. He is definitely not ready for this Techno ad.

MayBee on July 29, 2008 at 3:12 PM

Stupid!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on July 29, 2008 at 3:17 PM

“Maybe he can make the Americans less superficial…”

Says the girl modeling her look off Paris Hilton. Obamamania really scrapes the bottom of the European barrel, brains-wise.

Except those guys who said “Obama and Che bring change” and “I have friends who are Marxists working for Obama.” They’re right on!

emailnuevo on July 29, 2008 at 3:21 PM

This is funny. The ad socialists don’t want you to see.

“I have friends in America who are Marxist, and they’re working for Obama”….

Yes! Funny stuff.

jencab on July 29, 2008 at 3:31 PM

Lame. I couldn’t tell what the point was.

obladioblada on July 29, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Dale in Atlanta, here ya go.

Have you some time for me,
then I’ll sing a song for you
about 99 balloons
on their way to the horizon.
If you’re perhaps thinking about me right now
then I’ll sing a song for you
about 99 balloons
and that such a thing comes from such a thing.

99 balloons
on their way to the horizon
People think they’re UFO’s from space
so a general sent up
a fighter squadron after them
Sound the alarm if it’s so
but there on the horizon were
only 99 balloons.

99 fighter jets
Each one’s a great warrior
Thought they were Captain Kirk
then came a lot of fireworks
the neighbors didn’t understand anything
and felt like they were being provoked
so they shot at the horizon
at 99 balloons.

99 war ministers
matches and gasoline canisters
They thought they were clever people
already smelled a nice bounty
Called for war and wanted power.
Man, who would’ve thought
that things would someday go so far
because of 99 balloons.

99 years of war
left no room for victors.
There are no more war ministers
nor any jet fighters.
Today I’m making my rounds
see the world lying in ruins.
I found a balloon,
think of you and let it fly (away).

Effective ad. Those Europeans all needed a slap in the face.

Dr. Manhattan on July 29, 2008 at 3:59 PM

but how many older voters will get it and not end up simply scratching their heads and wondering, “What the hell is this?”

I had my 75 year old father watch it and he got it! Allahpundit, the question you asked was more appropriate to the statements by Obama during the trip and the press coverage surrounding it..My dad felt this the perfect response to last week. Don’t underestimate the older generation.

Pam on July 29, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Basically, Europeans are idiots whose opinions are meaningless. Did I get it?

I loved it.

P.S. For those that don’t know, Techno Viking is a German dude.

MirCat on July 29, 2008 at 9:52 PM

Uh…you don’t think old people will understand Germans saying “I have friends in America who are Marxists, and they are supporting Obama” ? Are you kidding?

Jaibones on July 29, 2008 at 10:03 PM

I don’t know AP, maybe you are a bit dense, but any age group can appreciate the fact that Marxists and Che fans love Obama. Perhaps you were hypnotized by the techno beat and missed the people actually talking?

Exactly

NotCoach on July 29, 2008 at 10:09 PM

Exactly X 2

I don’t know what kind of drooling idiots AP thinks old folks are but that ad won’t fly over their heads. If anything, it will scare them into creaking to the voting booths, which is a good thing in this case.

What will scare them? Techno + Marx + Che = Vote for the unscary guy.

TheCulturalist on July 30, 2008 at 12:53 AM

You got it backwards Limey. It’s that some Americans with a change of accent could pass as Europeans.

shick on July 29, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Thank God that worked for years for the IM force. Been watching reruns of “Mission:Impossible” lately, and it’s amazing to me how many vague Eastern-bloc nations they could infiltrate by adopting an accent.

And all we can say is “Merci Beaucoup!”
