Truth in advertising via Ambinder. As with any good cult, there’s not a whiff of rational appeal to be found; the “argument” for joining, such as it is, is the feeling of warm fuzzies you’ll derive, appropriately symbolized by a harmless yet adorable baby chick whom we’ll call “Barry.” This one’s destined for MTV and Comedy Central, partly because of the C-list celebrity spokesmen at the end but mostly because the jokey herpes analogy communicates just enough sexual sophistication to impress the average 18-year-old as “hip.” The punchline? Strip away the MoveOn graphics and you could insert this as is into any episode of “Mad TV,” where it would be received without a second thought as a heavy-handed parody of the vacuity of Obamamania.

Ah, so that’s what Rider Strong is doing nowadays.

Bingo.
Spirit of 1776 on July 28, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Okay. Now I want to know where “Barry” is now? Will he live a life with free health-care, a government sponsored home and social security? Was he reimbursed for his appearance? How can we be sure that he was not harmed during the making of this commercial? I didn’t see a disclaimer at the end of this video!

I’m sorry to say, but I’m voting for Hope. I can finally fill my gas tank with Hope, pay my vet bills with Hope, call somebody on my iHope. Hope will be thee to help fight terrorism and crime. Sorry mom…..I’m investing my vote in Hope!

If I were stupid enough to donate to MoveOn, I’d demand a refund.
JammieWearingFool on July 28, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Are we sure that this isn’t a parody?
pullingmyhairout on July 28, 2008 at 2:24 PM
If I was the last man on Earth I would still have Hope. *^&% Obama and &%^$ the horse he rode in on.
Dr. Manhattan on July 28, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Oh….. YUCK!
ToddonCapeCod on July 28, 2008 at 2:25 PM
Yeah, I really need political information from a random chick (no pun included) who played a gay witch on a tv program, and a random dude, who made it to tv by appearing on an episode of Trading Spaces. Puhlease.
tickleddragon on July 28, 2008 at 2:26 PM
The best part? According to MoveOn’s site, this was the winner of its “funniest ad” contest. Seriously.
amerpundit on July 28, 2008 at 2:26 PM
I think they’re trying to prove that HOPE really can feed the world. After all, that chick is going to grow up to be mighty yummy some day!
aero on July 28, 2008 at 2:27 PM
Wouldn’t Obama kill the Egg before it hatched?
Verbal Abuse on July 28, 2008 at 2:28 PM
Anyone stupid enough to donate to MoveOn doesn’t deserve a refund.
nukemhill on July 28, 2008 at 2:28 PM
That was seriously retarded.
madne0 on July 28, 2008 at 2:28 PM
Although, actually, that raises a rather interesting scenario. What if enough of us contributed small amounts, and then called them back up and demanded refunds. Tie up their phone lines, their time, etc. And we’d get all of those postage-paid envelopes that we could mail back empty. Cost them money on postage, but no donations to offset them.
I’m either being really devious, or really lame. Take your pick.
nukemhill on July 28, 2008 at 2:30 PM
MMMMMM! I love fried chicken!
Vince on July 28, 2008 at 2:30 PM

DanStark on July 28, 2008 at 2:22 PM
FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!
winemkr on July 28, 2008 at 2:30 PM
Hopementia:
1 : a usually progressive condition marked by deteriorated cognitive functioning when confronted with reason.
2 : to blindly follow someone who offers hope.
DanStark on July 28, 2008 at 2:31 PM
No, he would let it hatch, then stuff it in a box until it died, so the hen wouldn’t be punished with a chick it didn’t want.
VolMagic on July 28, 2008 at 2:32 PM
So, to extend the metaphor… If my brain hatches into a cute little fuzzy yellow chick of HOPE, what happens when my brain matures into a grown chicken, which gets slaughtered and made into a bucket of KFC? Is that point that chickens (voters) are too dumb to know their fate and are happily oblivious as long as someone keeps throwing
government handoutschicken feed in front of them until slaughtering day comes?aero on July 28, 2008 at 2:32 PM
I thought that a 527 couldn’t endorse a candidate?
Chakra Hammer on July 28, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Thank you for monitoring this site, so we don’t have to.
Ed made me click on DU with the Novak thread, now I have to haul my computer into the tub for a good scrubbin’.
Rhinoboy on July 28, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Seeing as how the one hard-and-fast postition that every Democrat must hold is support for unrestricted abortion, it seems a little ironic that they are shown as caring for a helpless developing chick in an egg as a symbol of hope.
gridlock2 on July 28, 2008 at 2:34 PM
It would be nice to counter with: this is your wallet, this is your coin purse on hope.
jukin on July 28, 2008 at 2:34 PM
My sentiments exactly.
Hey, I teach high school…I get enough stupidity blasted at me daily to last me through my 3 week summer holiday. Don’t need to add more on purpose.
:)
Bob's Kid on July 28, 2008 at 2:35 PM
The funny part is they seem to be serious. Do this “actors” really think this is a way to influence voters?

jp on July 28, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Political content aside for a moment, the commercial was very disjointed. It had a definate lack of flow, as the STD-like Hope segment was of a different tone than the ‘this is your brain’ segment. Poorly written, poorly acted, just plain piss-poor.
And I know I don’t even have to get into the actual message… I hate how Obama has hijacked the word hope. I can’t even use it any more without thinking of him.
Anna on July 28, 2008 at 2:39 PM
I think “they” - as well as most of the folks here, are missing the delicious irony:
the “hope” of which they speak is indeed acting as (if not is) a kind of “drug”, one which blinds them, as AP writes, to reason and common sense. This “drug” allows them to think of The Obamboozler’s socialist policies as “cool.”
They only forgot to mention the after-effects and addiction…but this delicious ad is begging for a Republican “yes, and” follow-up response ad.
Lockstein13 on July 28, 2008 at 2:39 PM
This was in the Obama in 30 Seconds contest a few months ago and came in like 5th runner up.

There should be campaign commercials with Cory Matthews, not Shawn Hunter!
malan89 on July 28, 2008 at 2:39 PM
It’s dumb and lacks any substance (big surprise) but at least it’s not a personal attack against Petraeus, McCain or Bush running for a third term.
shick on July 28, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Willie Stark told the hicks they had, “a right to hope.”

Wait I thought Obama was above PACs doing ads for him? I thought that was the old EEEEEvil politics, not the Obamatics of today.
Is this an ad also stating Obama can create life? As in he’s god? Cause it sure seems like it.
Stolen Catch Phrase + F-List Celebs = phail
Rbastid on July 28, 2008 at 2:43 PM
I can see a 527 for McCain doing a parody of this with the parents of those NO Brain children!

Hope is a chicken? c’mon. This is hope!

I think the last scene she should hold up a light bulb .. this is your brain .. then he can hold up an oil hurricane lamp.. this is your brain on hope.
Cause that is where we’re headed with Just Say No to Nuclear Energy Obama.
Texas Gal on July 28, 2008 at 2:46 PM
The 527 ad could show Mom’s and Dad’s crying and saying they had “HOPED” their kids were not so naive as to fall for a snake oil salesman. Have a mom with a broiled chicken on a platter or a mom serving scrambled eggs - a Dad Roosting a chicken on a grill.
ordi on July 28, 2008 at 2:47 PM
Or maybe in the next frame they could be chasing that chicken around the yard with a hatchet wiht .. this is what hope is having for dinner.
Texas Gal on July 28, 2008 at 2:48 PM
“Ride ‘er strong” should be on the list of horrible names parents give their children that are banned by that New Zealand judge.
txsurveyor on July 28, 2008 at 2:48 PM
TX gal nice touch!
ordi on July 28, 2008 at 2:49 PM
How about a picture of a real brain xray.. this is your brain… and then a shot of the lines outside the hospital waiting to get in to see a doctor.. this is your brain on hope.
Texas Gal on July 28, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Enjoy that first good night’s sleep. I am sure it has been a long time.
ej_pez on July 28, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Will someone be gentle with me and explain (in words of two syllables or less) how this ad gets by McCain/Feingold?
TooTall on July 28, 2008 at 2:52 PM

The parodies of this are as endless as they could be fun to do!
Texas Gal on July 28, 2008 at 2:53 PM
I hope I find a million dollars cash in my mailbox.
Ok . . .Now that I’m a rich dude, I hope my health

OK. . . Now that the wars over, I hope the MSM tells the truth.
Man , This hope stuff is easy like a Multi level Marketing.
Texyank on July 28, 2008 at 2:53 PM
Okay so if a commercial with a bunch of Peeps in a microwave with some sort of equally catchy slogan about your brain on hope and here comes the change or some such nonsense can I enter it into one of the MoveOn contests?
Just A Grunt on July 28, 2008 at 2:54 PM
I thought the whining crier and the dork in the fetal position on the stool captured the left quite well.

VTWaldrup on July 28, 2008 at 2:55 PM
Thats what i don’t understand..
A 527 cannot ENDORSE or Support a candidate, only “oppose”, a candidate or policy..
Chakra Hammer on July 28, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Are you kidding me? Was this ad for real?
Erockk on July 28, 2008 at 2:58 PM
Yep…..Really stupid just like I expected. Amazing how many empty vessels there are on the voter rolls. Gullable sponges waiting to suck up the brainwash babble.
saiga on July 28, 2008 at 2:58 PM
Two days ago I was wondering if Obama is made out of paper mache.
Guess now that is also an answer.
Sir Napsalot on July 28, 2008 at 3:00 PM
They are definitely going to need “Hope,” if Obama gets in, wait till they see their paychecks and see how much “Hope” costs.
I am Scared.
Irenaeus on July 28, 2008 at 3:01 PM
IF the Democrats 527’s are going to do this to undermine the 3rd party candidates like Ralph Nader, then the Republicans either need to complain that the Democrats are in violation of election law or do the same IF no one is going to enforce election law.
Chakra Hammer on July 28, 2008 at 3:01 PM
Dude that has to be a parody, there’s no way that’s an actual moveon campaign commercial, are you kidding me!? It looks like a bunch of junkies discussing rehab??

Apart from the obviously well-placed lies, the level of pure ignorance represented in those MoveOn ads is so mind-boggling… have so many Americans ever been so unwilling to think? I’m betting any American child in the 18th century had more common sense knowledge about how the world worked than these semi-comatose 21 century MoveOn “adults”. It’s like watching a horror show - people with their rational facilities entirely removed. We must figure out how we allowed ourselves to get to this point.
