Geraghty: Source says it’s Pawlenty for VP

posted at 4:30 pm on July 28, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Announcement coming “very soon.” Geraghty notes that Pawlenty’s still scheduled to give a routine speech on Wednesday, but TNR noted over the weekend that he’s already pulled out of one event and his plans for this week are suddenly and suspiciously hazy. See this recent item from Marc Ambinder, too, passing along a rumor that McCain was planning to meet with his inner circle about VP yesterday. And then of course there’s that CNN item claiming an attendee at a fundraiser heard McCain say conservatives are “really going to like” Pawlenty. Put it all together and today’s scurrilous veep du jour meme seems a tad less scurrilous than usual.

Here’s a bullet-point argument, again from TNR, about why Pawlenty is a “slam dunk” pick. His working-class pedigree is all to the good, but between the lack of name recognition and the “boring old Republican white guy” effect, I’m underwhelmed. He doesn’t even have serious religious cred to reassure antsy evangelicals. Let’s hope the report’s wrong, although given the general savviness of McCain’s campaign these days, it probably isn’t.

Update (Ed):  Well, I live in Pawlenty’s state and have met him on a couple of occasions, and this pick would not make me too glum at all.  Pawlenty has a good center-right track record, especially on holding the line on taxes with a hostile Legislature.  He demonstrated real leadership during the bridge collapse and its aftermath, keeping the gas-tax-increase advocates at bay and convincing the rest of the state to ignore them. He’s also pro-life, and a humble but telegenic man who will inject a little vigor into the campaign.

I like Sarah Palin, too, but she’s been governor a year in a state with three electoral votes and about as much chance of going Democrat as getting a sunburn at ANWR in December.  Pawlenty has a strong base of personal and political support in Minnesota and the upper Midwest, and he could change the calculus in Minnesota and Wisconsin.  He also helps defend the Midwest if Obama picks Sibelius, Gephardt, or Hagel.

Plus, Pawlenty never wavered in his support for McCain even when times got tough.  McCain values that kind of loyalty.  It’s not a bad quality to have on the ticket.

My only caveat on this would be the timing.  If McCain was to pick Palin, it would make sense to announce that sooner rather than later.  An announcement for Pawlenty could wait until the convention.

Won’t get my vote. I was pulling for Palin.

McCain really does have his head up his arse.

If I write in McCain/Palin, will McCain still get my vote for Pres?

jgapinoy on July 28, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Bah on the “white guy” bit. This election has people looking way too much at skin color over character and policies already. Let’s not be part of that and let that influence our pick too, even if that would help us. It shouldn’t matter!

kc8ukw on July 28, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Still hoping for Jindal…long shot though.

jgapinoy on July 28, 2008 at 4:37 PM

I’d say if you like the center-right Hugh Hewitt, there’s no reason you shouldn’t like Pawlenty. If only the race was a hockey game, Pawlenty would make it a rout.

RBMN on July 28, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Crap. I really hope this report is wrong. Pawlenty is better than several of the other names being bandied about, but Palin would be a far better choice. Dangit, McCain! Please prove us wrong about you for once!

He doesn’t need “religious cred” to please the religious among us as long as he’s socially conservative.

jgapinoy on July 28, 2008 at 4:39 PM

I will give pawlenty a chance if he is the nominee. Dont think it would be the best pick but its been hard anyway you look at it to get really fired up about a McCain Presidency.

Just how many extra votes will this get him?
Pawlenty.

carbon_footprint on July 28, 2008 at 4:41 PM

I still say it’s a strategically stupid mistake to pick a VP before Obama. McCain needs to keep this advantage. Though I have a feeling this is just gossip floating around, because well, the media and people need SOMETHING to talk about, why not the VP selection? I don’t have any real problem with T-Paw other than I doubt he can deliver MN.

Honestly, I don’t have any real opinions on who I want for VP, so it might as well be anyone. Palin maybe, though I don’t know enough about her.

DanStark on July 28, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Whew….At least Bobby Gendel won’t be tainted as loosing VP for the next go around. Pawlenty is another Dan Quail.

It will be something to watch if Obama flames out.

saiga on July 28, 2008 at 4:43 PM

If McCain chose Palin as his VP nominee, imagine the possible campaign slogans.

Vote McCain: The Old Guy With the Trophy V.P.

Sarah Palin: Like Pelosi, But Attractive and Mentally Balanced

McCain/Palin: No Gender Left Behind

JetBoy on July 28, 2008 at 4:44 PM

I know. But I think we should be trying to show them the error of their thinking rather than taking advantage of it to our own end. Of course, I do try, and have found it rather impossible and quite frustrating. It’s a very shallow world today, unfortunately. I don’t know what to do about it.

kc8ukw on July 28, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Speaking of the Veepstakes, Rasmussen has a new poll out with the favorable/unfavorable ratings for potential McCain VP’s. Huckabee and Lieberman are rated the highest among all voters while Romney and Huckabee tie among republicans with Lieberman close behind. Pawlently is an unknown quantity.

Why don’t we wait until we actually know who the pick is before we start to complain about it.

One thing, someone from Minnesota would not be bad. I like Palin too, but she has no more name recognition among average voters than Pawlenty has.

Pawlenty would be a great pick.

True story. I was rooting for Romney and wouldn’t have minded the “trendy” picks, i.e. Palin or Jindal.

However, Pawlenty is very glib, (opposite of W) a good Conservative, and most important to me doesn’t take sh*t from tha Media.

A good guy who is smarter than the Drive Bys.

Chakra Hammer on July 28, 2008 at 4:52 PM

Pawlenty holds that economic benefits do not justify illegal immigration. From Wikipedia:

By mid-year he sent Minnesota National Guardsmen to the U.S.-Mexico border at the request of the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

amerpundit on July 28, 2008 at 4:52 PM

You Palin nuts need to leave her off this ticket. Let the average voter wash the taste of Bush Republicanism out of their mouths and Palin will be great. Palin is awesome, but I really don’t think this year is the right time.

Not necessarily…Look at Cheney. He was veep for the last eight years, and he never ran for POTUS…

JetBoy on July 28, 2008 at 4:54 PM

I think Palin is the best choice.

But knowing how RINOish and out of touch McCain is he probably is going to select someone who is loyal and not a conservative so Pawlenty sounds about right. Just the fact that his floating Pawlenty is bad news.

McCain hates real conservatives so he isnt going to get real one that we can be excited about.

Did anyone here vote for McCain? Sometimes I find it hard to be believe Republicans elected this guy.

I hate McCain, for such a hero, he sure is stupid. Everytime I run, I run through his neighborhood and I make sure to spit at least once.

Tim Burton on July 28, 2008 at 4:55 PM

I really, REALLY think the “boring white guy” effect is going to be the end of McCain’s chances if he goes this route.

He should pick Palin, not just because she’s an attractive woman who is a conservative, but because between her and McCain, they can push a narrative that they are the REAL DEAL for people looking for change. I know McCain gets hammered on that point in polls, but he hasn’t been really pushing it either. Picking up Palin, and then hammering the “we are real post-partisan change” narrative is something he needs to do to win this, I think.

I remember Cheney saying when he took the job of VP that he would never run for president. I remember being irritated that Bush didn’t pick someone we’d be able to run with the strength of an incumbent when the time came. I perceived it as a weak move by Bush and evidence that he cares not for the conservative movement or the continuity of the party.

And that’s not his “average”, that’s a number he managed to reach.

Harry Truman has one of the lowest average approval ratings…below 40%. He wasn’t bad.

well… that image may throw some off.. also some rumors about Crist may not sit well..

If it were going to be Huck, that choice would have been made about the time of the Texas primaries. As for Palin!, I doubt it’s her either–for the same reason it isn’t going to be Jindal. Both need more experience on the state level.

On the one hand, I sometimes think McCain should hold off on announcing. Let Obama go first, I say as it forces him to decide with no hindsight to play with.

On the other, I think it could be advantageous to announce for two reasons. One reason is to do as much as possible to drive down Obama’s poll numbers before the convention so as to create more Chaos at their convention. The other reason, tied to the first, is that it will push Obama to announce his choice early, forcing him to commit thus giving time to vet his choice before their convention. This is going to be his first big, if you’ll excuse the phrase, black and white decision, no more squishy five positions at once games in it, so let the people see how he does. I’m pretty confident he’ll screw it up. He, unlike McCain does not have the nomination locked up.
