Democrat delegate “done with the Democratic Party”

posted at 1:00 pm on July 28, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Debra Bartoshevich finds herself with a week free in August after getting expelled from the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic national convention in Denver.  Bartoshevich made headlines last month when she announced that she would support John McCain over Barack Obama after Hillary Clinton “suspended” her campaign in June.   She has never voted Republican in her life, but now says she’s “done with the Democratic Party”:

Debra Bartoshevich, the duly elected Democratic Party delegate for Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin who vowed undying loyalty to the former first lady, has been dumped by the state party and barred from attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver next month. …

A 41-year-old emergency room nurse who says she’s never voted Republican in her life, Bartoshevich was fiercely in favor of Clinton’s universal health care program. She donated chunks of her salary to the New York senator. Bartoshevich was elected a convention delegate at the county level and was very excited about the trip to her lifelong party’s national convention.

But when Barack Obama won sufficient delegates to capture the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, Bartoshevich was bitterly disappointed. Not unlike a lot of the 17 million supporters who voted for the New York senator. While Clinton has urged her hordes to support Obama, many seem to be hesitating.

Actually, the normally excellent Andrew Malcolm assumes one fact not yet in evidence, which is part of Bartoshevich’s point. Obama has not won sufficient delegates to capture the nomination.  Neither he nor Hillary Clinton could reach that point, but Obama has enough pledges from superdelegates to win the nomination, if they don’t change their minds.  Hillary’s supporters want a floor vote in Denver with enough debate to give superdelegates an opportunity to rethink their pledges, but so far the Obama campaign has managed to put a stop to it.

Rationally, though, the Wisconsin Democrats could do little else.  Bartoshevich made her opposition public, and since the Democrats are a voluntary organization, they can choose the delegates they want for their representatives in Denver.  Having her as a member of the Denver delegation would create embarrassing publicity at what Democrats will be a Unityfest.

Bartoshevich will likely get the publicity anyway.  She calls Obama “selected, not elected”, echoing the 2000 (and beyond) chant of Democratic protesters.  She advises Americans to compare resumés and talks of her “respect and admiration” for John McCain.  Bartoshevich might make a great envoy to the other disaffected PUMA voters who will congregate in Denver — unless the DNC and/or state delegations can sniff them out beforehand as well.

I find it very ironic that the party of freedom and dissent and FREE SPEECH – kicked out a dissenting member. Given enough time these turkeys will always hang themselves, I love it.

Welcome to the Big Tent Debra Bartoshevich. We must remember, Ronald Reagan was once a Democrat. Waking up late is so much better than never. Now try to dump all that socialism you learned with the Democrats and embrace free enterprise which made our county great.

Maxx on July 28, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Oh, Denver will be a watershed moment, if Hillary can take down the O, she may actually win it. No press from her of late means no “bad ” press, I still see her on the ticket as a serious threat.

Knowing what other Hillary supporters (bloggers among them) are encountering by not backing down, including but not limited to blog hijackings, harassment, damage property and even a death threat or two, I’d like to advise this former Dem delegate to… ahem… get a gun… and carry it at all times.

newton on July 28, 2008 at 1:12 PM

OK – So, wouldn’t it be somewhat smart of the Republicans to invite her to their convention, giving her a platform. It would be fair enough for her to say that she supported Hillary, but that the Dems won’t even allow a floor vote. It could be mutually beneficial – she gets a large forum to voice her disgust, and the Repubs get to have her voice heard on the Democratic party and Obama (or, use her a propaganda, whichever way you want to phrase that).

No different than the Dems who bring out Iraq Vets that support them – but I think this would be even cooler.

nailinmyeye on July 28, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Mainstream political reporters, and other Democrat activists, have to watch their step around the Obama Campaign. Otherwise, you could be asked to turn in your kneepads and go home. And even worse, now you’re a “racist.”

RBMN on July 28, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Exactly how does someone who is elected get barred from carrying out the office she was elected to? Wasn’t the purpose of the election to decide who goes and who doesn’t go? I seriously doubt this is the end of the matter.

pedestrian on July 28, 2008 at 1:17 PM

People, she wanted Hillary-care. She hasn’t come to her senses. She’s just frustrated because she didn’t get what she wanted. She’s not making sense. She’s just voting McCain out of spite.

“She’s not making sense. She’s just voting McCain out of spite.”

I’m more excited about her than I am about so-called “conservatives” who I agree with basically on the issues, but who are going to sit home or vote for some twit like Bob Barr.

Anything that keeps the Obama family out of the White House is a good development.

Anything that works in Obama’s family, is basically bad.

NoDonkey on July 28, 2008 at 1:26 PM

But I thought dissent was patriotic, isn’t that what the Dems keep saying?

trubble on July 28, 2008 at 1:29 PM

First Howard Stern, now Baroshevich.

Vanity Fair’s fat pimp James Wolcott thought Howard Stern would help the Democrats win in 2004. He also thought Kitty Kelly could do the trick.

mymanpotsandpans on July 28, 2008 at 1:31 PM

In a recent poll I conducted, 100% of voters who formerly supported Hillary because of “Obama’s inexperience,” now plan to vote for McCain because, “Obama is an arrogant prick.”

Poll sample size was 1 and was excluded to women married to me.

BohicaTwentyTwo on July 28, 2008 at 1:33 PM

A lot of us feel the very same way. We did not leave the democratic party, they left us. The liberal perception of the truth is what they want it to be and not whether it is true or not. They look at patriotism as a weakness of the uneducated masses and look at the world as where they are entitled to control. Control freaks forcing their will on the community of man is as old as the dawn of civilization. The democrats epitomize this fact.

BacaDog on July 28, 2008 at 1:23 PM

There are just as many conservatives who feel the same way about John McCain. The only thing that’s guaranteed this election is that it’s sure to set all time records for low turn-out on both sides.

As committed as Hillary supporters are to NOT voting for Obama, there are just as many conservatives, if not more, who will be either sitting home, or writing in other candidates on Election Day. Where it benefits McCain is that Hillary supporters are more likely to purposely vote for McCain in their hatred toward Obama, while conservatives are more likely to simply stay home or vote for a third party.

“As committed as Hillary supporters are to NOT voting for Obama, there are just as many conservatives, if not more, who will be either sitting home, or writing in other candidates on Election Day.”

Not conservative, just stupid.

Anything that helps place Obama in the White House is by definition, not conservative.

Call it anything, but conservatives.

Real conservatives will vote for McCain this fall. He is far better than Obama on conservative issues.

So-called “conservatives” (who actually resemble leftists with their perpetual whining and constant claims of victimhood), will sit at home with their panties in a bunch, or vote for some circus clown like Bob Barr.

NoDonkey on July 28, 2008 at 1:50 PM

This is how Tammy Bruce found her way to the Republican party, and David Horowitz.
They truly wake up and see the direction the Dems are taking and it is so much different then what they were led to believe.
Hopefully Debra will have a chance to now receive some information outside of the DNC talking points. And like Tammy, understand that the truly “big tent” is the Republican party.
Think about it…we had as potenital Pres.McCain, Huck, Rommey, Fred, Guiliani and Lieberman tossed around as a VP candidate. Those three are a broader spectrum then the Dems ever dreamed of.

Good luck with that. Some of you haven’t been paying attention to John McCain’s actions over the last decade. Keep claiming he’s a conservative over and over. It won’t change who he is.

Keep in mind, that “real conservatives” wouldn’t have nominated John McCain in the first place.

My college roommate ended up going to med school. I watched her slowly progress from moderate conservative to universal health care supporting liberal over the course of a couple years in med school.

Her big argument was that poor people shouldn’t have to die just because they were unlucky enough to be born poor.

Med school may have given her an education in medicine, but, it didn’t give her a lick of sense when it comes to economics and human behavior.

JadeNYU on July 28, 2008 at 2:00 PM

Democrat delegate “done with the Democratic Party”

HOW A POLITICAL PARTY SELF DESTRUCTS
Yuh gotta laugh when the dems rant about “every vote counts.” Theft of votes is OK, as long as the DNC’s selection hijackers are doing the vote counting.

The DNC literally stole hundreds of thousands of votes, and two states from Hillary Clinton, then threw this delegate under the bus. A sad case of the Messiah being selected, and not elected.

byteshredder on July 28, 2008 at 2:02 PM

I’m still lovin’ this Trotsky vs. Stalin knife-fight. When Socialists are “expelled from the Party” – I am pleased. Anything that weakens the Socialist movement is a good thing.

I just with that the Wisconsin Democrats would call a spade a spade – and admit that Bartoshevic was guilty of “anti-Soviet agitation” and, therefore, was no longer in the Party.

Exit question – what does an apparatchik do, when an apparatchik is no longer a member of the Party?

He wasn’t my first choice, but he’s the only man who can keep the Presidency from going to a completely inexperienced, unqualified, far left, self-absorbed jackass.

John McCain is a patriot and a good man. Barack Obama is neither. McCain is solid on defense and the economy. Obama is not. The choice is easy for real conservatives.

Faux conservatives will continue to wet their pants no matter what happens. These were the geniuses who thought it was a great idea to lose Congress in ‘06, how did that work out for you?

I know a Hillary-ite who is steaming mad about Obama being given half the Michigan primary delegates even though he did not run in Michigan.

I give her credit for intelligence.

You cannot keep re-running elections until the right people get on the ballot.

You cannot hand out votes according to what you think someone would have gotten had they been in an election.

You cannot change election results to be more fair

Unless you are the cirrent Democratic party handlers

Democrats were well trained by the Florida-Gore to chant ’selected not elected’. They never thought it would happen to them. Shucks

This might be true for ‘private practice’ doctors (if such a thing exists under government run healthcare), but not for government funded hospitals and ERs. They can overcharge all they want, but it won’t raise the pay for the government employed employees. The overcharging will be redirected into more excessive government programs, while the average salary for hospital employees gets slashed.

NoDonkey on July 28, 2008 at 2:19 PM

If you ignore reality, I guess. I have a problem calling a man a patriot who feels that the country of Mexico is his number one priority. I call that a traitor. So do many millions of others. That’s right. Millions. Millions of Americans who will have an awfully tough time driving to the voting booths to elect a man who makes a habit of calling them racists, or telling them to “shut up.”

Allah can continually predict that we’ll all hold our nose and vote for the creep in the end, but the numbers will prove him wrong in the end. If McCain wins, it won’t be because conservatives held their noses. It will be because Hillary supporters voted for the liberal nominee of the Republican Party.
