Ma'ariv's initial report of the receipt of the original note is here, in Hebrew. No such statement there. Nor is there prior mention of the note's contents in Ma'ariv's original report of Obama's visit to the Western Wall. Now, here's a funny update from the JPost:

Identified only by the first initial of his name, Aleph, and with his face obscured, the student went on Channel 2 television Sunday to confess that he took the presidential contender's note last week and passed it to the press. The resulting coverage of Obama's private, handwritten musings on hope and sin added to the mystique of his campaign visit to Israel but drew international criticism, including from leading rabbis who said Jewish morality had been compromised by the publication. Don't you just love the Obama plug from the "yeshiva student"?! Only when the attorneys and a legal threat stepped in yesterday, did Ma'ariv sing a different tune. Hmmmmm.......

This is just phase one (or, if you prefer, face one) of the plan to answer the charge that Obama seems to be an arrogant elitist. For a few weeks I’ve been expecting to see the “Humble Obama”-photo op with a young handicapped person, talking with a senior citizen,in the center of a group of “regular folks”, dressed as they are, instead of the dark suit.
It’s hard not to be cynical about the most cynical of opportunistic presidential candidates. You know what would have been great? If Obama had written a prayer, placed it in the Western Wall, and we never knew that it happened. No cameras, no soundbites, nothing.

If anyone could prove that the BHO campaign was complicit in the note publishing I think that would be a killer story. Killer. Personally, I think that would be too low for even them, though I never would have believed the campaign posters before, either.

That may well be true, but even if it is, it doesn’t let Ma’ariv off the hook for violating the (cultural/religious) sanctity of the content of notes left in the Wall. Ma’ariv’s actions will have an effect on how people feel about the Western Wall and that is inexusable, whether it was agreed with the BHO campaign, or not. Of course, the campaign clearly operated with exceedingly poor taste, and a dreadful lack of respect, in plastering their campaign posters by the Wall to begin with. This whole situation reeks on all sides.

Puh-leeze. I don’t believe for a second that this wasn’t a carefully orchestrated tactic by the Obama campaign to get his carefully written “prayer” public media attention and simultaneously make him look like a victim of something. Can’t believe anyone conservative fell for this. You should know better.

The Ma’ariv newspaper? We have in principle not bought a copy for about the last 22 years. Until then, there was actually some intellectual content at least in the Shabbat (weekend) edition. Then it turned into a complete tabloid rag.

I even disdain reading copies left at the barber shop. Why dirty my hands and brain?!

And as several above felt, the reaction at our extended table on Friday night was one of disgust that some low-life would pull out someone’s note from the Wall. Just pathetic!

That prayer was written with an ear for the way it would sound, to men and women of ordinary intelligence and piety, when it was published. It was surely reviewed by advisors, and it was probably written in committee.
