Stealing prayers from the Western Wall: despicable

posted at 12:15 pm on July 26, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

One would think that the Israelis would know better — and the Los Angeles Times, too, for that matter.  After Barack Obama visited the Western Wall and left the traditional prayer note in one of its crevices, someone stole it and gave it to the Israeli newspaper Maariv, which published its contents.  The Times repeated the offense in its coverage:

Barack Obama’s visit to the Western Wall was a public event. The handwritten prayer the presidential candidate left there was meant to be private.

But as soon as he doffed the requisite skullcap and left, a snoop pulled a folded piece of paper from a crevice in the ancient wall and offered it to the mass-circulation daily Maariv. The Hebrew-language newspaper’s decision to publish it Friday, under the headline “Obama’s note,” provoked a storm of criticism in Israel over an intrusion into his relationship with God. …

Shmuel Rabinovitz, the rabbi who manages Judaism’s holiest site, was furious at the snoop and Maariv.

“The notes placed between the stones of the Western Wall are between a person and his maker,” he told Army Radio. “It is forbidden to read them or make any use of them.” The publication, he added, “damages the Western Wall and damages the deep, personal part of every one of us that we keep to ourselves.”

No one doubts that Obama meant his visit to the Wall as a public event. WND reported that Obama’s campaign even distributed campaign posters for supporters to hang on police barricades, which is pretty tacky, if true.   (The posters were certainly there.)  However, the prayer note should have been respected as a private communication between Obama and God, not exploited for circulation boosting.

The Anchoress writes:

I’m kind of appalled that anyone took his prayer out of that wall, more appalled that it was made public, and incredibly appalled that some a faith-based site is “fisking” the prayer while a few bloggers (and forum commenters) are daring to mock it or to judge its content as being insufficient because it does not mention his country, or Israel.

To which I have to reply – to anyone enjoying or exploiting the theft of this prayer, or judging it: “screw that. You don’t get to decide on or judge another’s prayer.” …

None of us are perfect – none of us pray perfectly – and good heavens most of us would not like the deepest parts of our prayer put out there for public judgment and mockery. I know I wouldn’t. My prayers, unless I’m clearly sharing them with others, are between me and God, and they’re no one else’s damn business.

This is, I think, the cult of celebrity at its ugliest.  It would be akin to bugging a confessional to hear a Catholic candidate’s private conversation between his priest and the Lord.  It assumes no boundaries, no privacy, regardless of the lack of relevance to the issues at hand.  We’re not electing a Pope; we’re electing a President, and his private entreaties to God should remain private.

Shame on the man who stole this note, and the several others who stole the notes of others in their search for Obama’s.  Shame on Maariv and the Times, and anyone else who published Obama’s prayer.  Maybe all of them should be praying to get a life.

But campaign banners are kosher.

It was wrong but I have to tell you it’s mighty suspicious that it became public. I’m not claiming that one of his team gave it to them, just that something smells really fishy about this.

TheBigOldDog on July 26, 2008 at 12:23 PM

All of you have it wrong. That was not a prayer. It was just Uuuuuuhbama writing himself a note. After all, why would he pray to any other god but himself?

thekingtut on July 26, 2008 at 12:24 PM

I should say, I do think this is tasteless, the pulling of the prayer. But if, for example, the paper had been blank, now that would have been interesting, no?

Besides, paper is paper. Prayer is to God, no need to venerate the paper by giving it additional significance. Still, tasteless.

Spirit of 1776 on July 26, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Yecch. I get queasy thinking about this.

Despicable is too kind of a characterization.

ninjapirate on July 26, 2008 at 12:21 PM

That’s what I’m hoping will happen. I can’t imagine a newspaper would publish it without thinking they had his blessing. Perhaps I am wrong but Jews take the Wall very seriously and I can’t imagine them risk the backlash that would surely come from breaching that sanctity.

TheBigOldDog on July 26, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Yeah, it was a photo op, and His Holiness bothers me to no end. In the end though, it isn’t about BO, it’s about the Wall, and the protocol, traditions, etc. Shame on those who exploited this.

Anita on July 26, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Curious as to what he had written, some onlookers tried to locate the note. One man grabbed a scrap… and was disappointed to discover that it was written in Spanish. “Nobody knows what was in the note. It’s confidential, it’s personal,” said an official from Rabinovitz’s office.

When they translate it, they’ll be disappointed to find out it says “Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.

wise_man on July 26, 2008 at 12:32 PM

Well, to defend the indefensible, BHO did say that he wants all the walls torn down, and before you tear the Western Wall down you have to take the notes out of it. Hussein should have thought about this before he venerated a wall and then made a whole speech about the problems with walls.

On a related note, BHO is next to travel to China and give a speech in front of the Great Wall of China, calling it the most anti-social construction ever in human history. He plans a Reganesque “tear down this wall”.

Israeli newspaper Maariv is greatly condemned by this, what a despicable thing to do.

I predicted this before the time! I suspected that an Obamanian would sneak it to the press. This goes right alongside Willy’s finding the rocks on the beach at Normandy and molding them into the shape of a cross. Pure planned politics.

Oh please….get it together people.

The moment I saw Obama putting that note between some stones on T.V. I asked myself “How long before I get to read that note?”

I knew it was going to be read and so did Obama.
I’ll bet he was counting on it.
That’s why there was such a humble and selfless prayer on it.

You know it’s true.

Actually I’m surprised that it didn’t contain a prayer for John McCain in it.
It would have been a nice touch.

I believe that Barack was about as sincere with his prayer as he is when he expresses concern for the troops or the Jewish people or the Iraqis.
It was just another campaign prop.

NeoKong on July 26, 2008 at 12:38 PM

Of course Obama is not innocent in this either, there is nothing Christian about writing a prayer and sticking it into the west wall. He should have known better too.

I have the same suspicions. Sometimes things are not as they seem. Wouldn’t the average thief try to sell the prayer? To go to all the trouble and risk of stealing several prayers before finding the right one and then giving it away just stinks. Why would anyone do that unless they were acting on Obama’s behalf??

Seems to me that a blogger critical of another media outlet’s publishing of a person’s private prayer would not link, directly or indirectly, to the text of that prayer.

Much like the Edwards story, which everyone wants to report on but nobody wants to appear to want to report on, this post seems like a pretext for publishing information while still seemingly staying above the fray.

No offense, Ed. But your post about how despicable it is to publish a stolen prayer would have been a lot more convincing if it were totally link-free.

Missy on July 26, 2008 at 12:42 PM

I am so cynical about politicians that my first thought on hearing of the theft was whether Obama had set up the theft to get the prayer published and be a victim at the same time. It would also draw attention to the fact that he was respectful of a Jewish Holy site

That is sadly, my first intuition on the matter. Do not castigate me for sharing a reflexitive response. I have been trained by the best animal trainers in the world, the American political strategist

I suspect that is why this story does not have good legs. The cynicism is so widespread that even if Obama is indeed a victim, his talking about it would stoke the fires of doubt

The Rev. Wright’s preaching on Judaism has some weight in this matter

It brought me back to a beach in Normandy and a cross in the sands

entagor on July 26, 2008 at 12:43 PM

If the prayer note was actually stolen, the thief will certainly have some ’splainin to do, at the appropriate time.

I’ve got a hard time buyin into Barry writing something original. My bet woulda been that if the note actually WAS Barry’s, it would have said something like “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”.

And no, I don’t give Mr. HopI’llChange any originality points. At all.

Maxx on July 26, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Of course he knew.
With Obama everything is a photo-op or a soundbite.
Do you think it is a coincidence that there are so many halo photos of him.
I’ll bet the same person takes most of them and he works for Obama.
All his speeches are filled with cliches and quotable phrases just for the media.
Nothing is an accident with him.
They are propaganda masters.

His Berlin speech is a perfect example.
He even tossed in the phrase “We are all citizens of Berlin” to emulate JFK and Ich bin ein Berliner.

He is not President but he plays one on T.V.

I’d be surprised if it wasn’t the Obama campaign that passed the note along to the media. What better way to make joooos look like the bad guys in a situation where Barry and his flacks were the wrongdoers? He behaved abominably, effectively spiting on a holy site by plastering it with campaign banners/trying to use it as a backdrop for yet another photo-op/fundraising ploy. Leaking the “prayer” is just another way of publicizing his vacuous bs–and pointing fingers at others for the dastardly deed. Bleh.

I’m SO glad this stunt in Jerusalem backfired (waiting for the video….)! And I hope the “distraction” of the prayer leak doesn’t interfere with people seeing Barry for the vile narcissistic sociopath that he is.

am i the only one that thinks the obamamessiah is behind all this just to get a sympathy rub from it and so this way no one will see his real note.

Nazarene, charlatan, what can you offer humanity? Since the hour you vomited forth from the gaping wound of a woman, you have done nothing but drown man’s soaring desires in a deluge of sanctimonious morality. You’ve inflamed the pubertal mind of youth with your repellent dogma of original sin. And now you absolve in denying them the ultimate joy beyond death by destroying me ? But you will fail, Nazarene, as you have always failed. We were both created in man’s image, but while you were born of an impotent god, I was concieved of a jackal. Born of Satan, the desolate one. Your pain on the cross was but a splinter compared to the agony of my father. Cast out of heaven, the fallen angel, banished, reviled. I will drive deeper the thorns into your rancid carcass, you profaner of vices. Cursed Nazarene. Satan, I will avenge thy torment, by destroying the Christ forever.

The Anchoress has been my first stop on the net for some months now. She is a very good writer and clear thinker.

Funny how the Jewish and Christian traditions are dissed so regularly by the media and politicians. And how timid those same manipulators are when it comes to islam. Are they afraid of causing an offense that will cost them their heads?

Zorro on July 26, 2008 at 1:49 PM

I want to straighten something out, putting prayers in the Western Wall is not a religious event for Jews; it’s a cultural act. There is no strictly religious significance to the Western Wall, as it was only a retaining wall, but it’s very close to Jewish hearts since it is the only part of the Temple that Jews have access to. There is nothing inherently Jewish or religious about the act of stuffing prayers into the Wall, though.

For Jews, the only truly holy site is the Temple Mount, which is controlled by muslims and which serves as the lauching ground for many rock attacks against Jews. The Western Wall is just the crumbs of the Temple that Jews have been satisfied with since taking Jerusalem.

I’m sorry but as a Jewish male who’s been to the Wall numerous times, that’s way over the line. Notes put into the Wailing Wall are sacred, they’re seen as prayers between you and G-d. Much as no one here would want to have a reporter listening into a person’s personal prayer, obama’s note should not have been touched. I’m more angry at the person who initially did it then all the coverage after it, the cat’s out of hte bag so saying it more now isn’t really going to fix it BUT whoever did it first and the Israeli paper for publishing it was dead wrong.

The Ma’ariv newspaper? We have in principle not bought a copy for about the last 22 years. Until then, there was actually some intellectual content at least in the Shabbat (weekend) edition. Then it turned into a complete tabloid rag.

I even disdain reading copies left at the barber shop. Why dirty my hands and brain?!

And as several above felt, the reaction at our extended table on Friday night was one of disgust that some low-life would pull out someone’s note from the Wall. Just pathetic!

You know though, when I want a private moment with God, I just talk to him. I don’t write my prayers on a piece of paper and leave it in front of hundreds of flashing cameras on a self-promoting world tour.

Puh-leeze. I don’t believe for a second that this wasn’t a carefully orchestrated tactic by the Obama campaign to get his carefully written “prayer” public media attention and simultaneously make him look like a victim of something. Can’t believe anyone conservative fell for this. You should know better.

Yep, total fraud and a set up.

That may well be true, but even if it is, it doesn’t let Ma’ariv off the hook for violating the (cultural/religious) sanctity of the content of notes left in the Wall. Ma’ariv’s actions will have an effect on how people feel about the Western Wall and that is inexusable, whether it was agreed with the BHO campaign, or not. Of course, the campaign clearly operated with exceedingly poor taste, and a dreadful lack of respect, in plastering their campaign posters by the Wall to begin with. This whole situation reeks on all sides.

Sorry, I had drifted off a bit in my response. If anyone could prove that the BHO campaign was complicit in the note publishing I think that would be a killer story. Killer. Personally, I think that would be too low for even them, though I never would have believed the campaign posters before, either.

“She who must be obeyed”, requires the same. ; )

Maariv’s official statement was “Obama team was handing out copies of the note to the media before he left his Hotel“. Not that they are not liars, but it’s not the kind of lie anyone would make up, as it is easy to confirm or deny.

This is just phase one (or, if you prefer, face one) of the plan to answer the charge that Obama seems to be an arrogant elitist. For a few weeks I’ve been expecting to see the “Humble Obama”-photo op with a young handicapped person, talking with a senior citizen,in the center of a group of “regular folks”, dressed as they are, instead of the dark suit.
It’s hard not to be cynical about the most cynical of opportunistic presidential candidates. You know what would have been great? If Obama had written a prayer, placed it in the Western Wall, and we never knew that it happened. No cameras, no soundbites, nothing.

Doug on July 27, 2008 at 5:33 PM

What was the prayer for? The destruction if Israel or was it for the victory to be given to the Palestinians?
