New McCain ad: Obama didn’t visit the troops in Germany because he couldn’t bring cameras

posted at 5:48 pm on July 26, 2008 by Allahpundit
Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

This is a sequel to the attack ad McCain dropped on him at the beginning of his trip, retaining some of the same points about Obama’s NATO subcommittee and his having steered clear of Iraq for almost three years. It’s also a sequel of sorts to the “Pump” ad from a few days ago suggesting that Obama uniquely was somehow to blame for soaring gas prices; anyone who believes that will, I guess, also believe that he’d torpedo a visit to see wounded troops because there’d be no flashbulbs popping in his face. Not only does that not fit the facts — he left his pool reporters outside when he visited Walter Reed a few weeks ago, and as I noted last night, his spokesman says the plan at Landstuhl was to keep the press on the plane — but even under the worst assumptions, it makes no sense. If you think (and I do not) that Obama’s a sociopath who sees wounded soldiers as nothing but political chips to be played in an election card game, surely we can agree that he’s nevertheless savvy enough to grasp how horribly bad it would look to have photographers with him on a hospital visit in the middle of a campaign. If there were pictures on the wires of him shaking hands with bedridden vets while media vultures crowded around for close-ups, conservatives would have ripped him for it properly and mercilessly and he knows it. Why not stick with the “he went to the gym but not the hospital” point, which is at least factually correct? Why go here?

Update: Here’s the way the ad should have played it:

“If I had been told by the Pentagon that I couldn’t visit those troops, and I was there and wanted to be there, I guarantee you, there would have been a seismic event,” McCain told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in an interview to air Sunday on “This Week”…

McCain questioned his rival’s justification: “I know of no Pentagon regulation that would have prevented him from going there — without the media and the press and all of the associated people. Nothing that I know of would have kept him from visiting those wounded troops.”

“All of the associated people” meaning Ret. Gen. Gration, specifically. Obama still has yet to explain why he didn’t just leave him behind.

Chakra Hammer on July 26, 2008 at 5:56 PM

Yeah, it’s good to mention issues like this. But I think it would be better to explain to the American people why Obama’s political philsophy is dangerous, and how it runs counter to American traditions of limited government and natural rights. That’s harder to do, but I can’t help but feel that we win little converts by talking instead of every little issue, rather than attacking the whole philosophy.

Oh jeez. “John McCain is always there for our troops” just sounded really lame in that ad, tacked on there like that.

Ever see such an Empty-suited, light-resume, hollow-rhetoric, Fraud for President, that a single, solitary Dog&Pony Show Lovefest trip to Anti-Ameican Europe and a quick viist to Iraq & Afghanistan, where he’s had responsibilites for 4 years related to his job in the Senate, yet could not manage to vist before, gaff-off-the wound-troops, while being drooled over by the sychophantic Mainstream Media, is actually considered a “BOOST” to his “foreign policy credentials”??

Un-freaking-believeable!

I don’t know. I got the distinct impression that Obama skipped the soldiers because they did not fit the itinerary. I don’t think he is a sociopath, I just think he did not think about how it would look. Too busy being idolized.

Um..no, I think it’s fine…We don’t know why Obama really didn’t go, but his explainations are really poor…So McCain is hypothesizing the motives and may be right. I see nothing wrong with it because it at least fits the image of Obama that is clearly emerging…and I don’t know if he’s a sociopath, but I don’t think he gives much thought to the troops at all, based on use of military funding as a political football.

tomas on July 26, 2008 at 6:11 PM

Let me ammend what I said…I think there’s more here and his very poor explaination left a big door open for McCain…Didn’t he say the main reason he didn’t go was because he thought there would be a media circus while the doctors were trying to treat the wounded…huh?!?

AUINSC on July 26, 2008 at 6:11 PM

Obama’s people said that the purpose of his visit (before he cancelled it) was to thank the troops — an act that required neither media nor military advisers. Obama’s excuses don’t pass the smell test.

BTW, if Obama wanted to keep his visit to Walter Reed secret, then why does he keep mentioning it to the media?

AZCoyote on July 26, 2008 at 6:12 PM

I think that if McCain had not called Obama on this a lot of people on the right would have said he was too soft, too unwilling to fight dirty, etc.

That is the problem with negative ads. They are usually not entirely fair, but they work. In this instance however, Obama could have just gone over and said hello to some soldiers and spared himself the problem.

I like the ad…..and I also wonder why he didn’t let that General behind also. He hasn’t given a good explanation for that at all.

I saw a Fox poll that 63% feel his trip didn’t help him at all. Plus, many, many people feel he is too arrogant and they are turned off by it. That may well be his undoing.

becki51758 on July 26, 2008 at 6:16 PM

I don’t know if Obama is a sociopath, Mr. Pundit, but he is an arrogant narcissistic liar–as well as a proven Serial Fraud who is certainly capable of thinking of wounded American military personnel as pawns.

He has a Nixonian non-conscience and a Clintonesque amorality that you might be ambiguous about, but I’m not

Janos Hunyadi on July 26, 2008 at 6:16 PM

“All of the associated people” meaning Ret. Gen. Gration, specifically. Obama still has yet to explain why he didn’t just leave him behind.

Because Obama really doesn’t know how to talk to the troops, especially wounded ones, without his military advisor to give him cues on what to say.

Obama can’t imagine why people would be willing to be wounded, maimed or killed for a country his wife was never proud of until now.

And he might have been afraid of troops confronting him on saying the surge would fail. His advisor would step in with cues.

Wethal on July 26, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Please, Allah.
All BO had to do was fulfill his itinerary. He didn’t do it and there’s no excuse for his failure to have a personal visit with the wounded.
Forget sincerity. The political advantages of just showing up were enormous.
No wonder the Clintons were flummoxed.

Sorry AP, this is big league politics. Those epitomes of restraint on the other side certainly would have no problem running an ad similar. One thing I would have added is the townhall meeting at Ft Hood that Barry O is ignoring.
I would make it seem that Barack only does something when challenged by McCain. I would make it real clear who was in charge and who was just a piece of string fluttering in the breeze.
I would show Barack responding to not only my challenges but those of Chris Wallace at Fox News and from groups on the left. The tag line. Obama is a follower not a leader.
Hit him, hit him hard, hit him again.

Wouldn’t it have been enough to have the press camped outside regardless? Pinning over how empathetic & altruistic Obama is, speculating with honey dripped lips over what was going on inside, what he was saying, how he was healing people by his very presence? Ready the very moment he reappeared to ‘walk with him’ cameras rolling the way Brian Williams was, on the scene and lobbing Obama softballs within 8 seconds of stepping down from the podium of light in Germany?

It seems to me either way you slice this, the primary factor was how it would look as opposed to your Military & associated veterans & staff at hospitals.

Obama is a rookie politician, and a big fat lier to boot. Simple enough for you Libs; the guy is 8-12 years away from having the experience needed for the position of potus. This has nothing to do with the color of his skin, nothing to do with his religion of choice; this has to do with qualifications and experience.

Maybe McCain sees things differently, his son is after all serving his country, a Marine. Obama doesn’t have a son or served himself in any Military Service. He doesn’t get that Marines, Soldiers, Airman, Sailors, are not photo props. Come to think of it, how would that look in contrast, Obama standing healthy, next to a wounded troop? I don’t think Obama wanted to have his photo taken with someone who made the Surge Work, and paid for it too.

Obama was afraid that the media would start to turn on him a little bit again, like when that person in the media back here in the states called the coverage out of Iraq “Fake News”

Chakra Hammer on July 26, 2008 at 6:55 PM

anyone who believes that will, I guess, also believe that he’d torpedo a visit to see wounded troops because there’d be no flashbulbs popping in his face.

Like Ed Morrisey, for example?

This makes the decision track very clear. Obama and his team set up the visits to military installations before going overseas. After seeing how the media got excluded in Iraq and Afghanistan, they decided it wasn’t worth traveling to Ramstein and Landstuhl to visit the severely wounded troops because they couldn’t bring the campaign and get the photo ops they wanted. Instead, Obama went shopping in Berlin.

As I wrote yesterday, that’s certainly a revealing set of priorities for a man who wants to lead these troops as Commander in Chief.

Which is not to say I agree with or like the ad. You want an attack ad, jeez, Obama’s own words provide ample fodder for as many as are needed between. Just keep showing video clips and quotes of what Obama himself said and let the proles figure it out. They will, eventually, if McCain isn’t a total idiot. (Which is clearly too much to ask of any pol…)

The problem with the “Obama is a follower, not a leader” angle is that McCain was late to the party on recommending more troops in Afghanistan and is trying to co-opt Obama’s 16 month withdrawal plan from Iraq. Thus, if McCain does the “I’m a leader,” Obama is going to clobber him on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Enough of the HotAir ‘peanut gallery’ (No it isn’t the insult that several people accused me of making last time I used the term here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_gallery ) is smart enough to understand how bad commie-Obama sucks, but not enough people grasp the HUGE potential danger that McCain represents on most of the things a President has to deal with.

Think of us as they guy on the street with the ‘REPENT: The End is Near’ signs. The difference is that we aren’t the slightly insane religious zealots…. We just understand the guy better than most, and want the rest of our peers… the common people… to take off their rose colored McCain goggles and prepare for a future that is likely to be bleak, at best.

Pure blind luck would be the only determining factor as to whether Obama or McCain will go down in history as the worst, and most dangerous President in History.

I’ll guarantee you that either way, in a year from now, we all (Dem., Rep., Indep., all..) will be longing for the ‘good old days’ of 2007, and wish that Bush could have declared himself President for life, rather than allowing us fools to select from these two to replace him.

LegendHasIt on July 26, 2008 at 8:39 PM

ehhhh….no credit for the phone call afterwards?

Ropera on July 26, 2008 at 8:40 PM

I see your point, LegendHasIt, but a presidential election is almost always a choice between Bad and Worse ( 1980 was a choice between Great and Inept, but those are rare )

2008 is a choice between Bad and Much, Much Worse

We get to choose between MsCain and Obama–that’s All She Wrote. Under McCain, there is a chance to avoid a lot things–Bad Things–that could not be avoided under the Messiah

maybe, there will even be chances for Good to be accomplished; maybe not

McCain ain’t much, but complaining about him ( and not voting for him ) will only makes everything worse

Bad and Much, Much Worse…….

Couldn’t he have just “breezed” in and out? Then explain why it was cut short instead of just abandoning the whole plan? Seems to me that some way to accomodate this visit could have been worked out rather than just a phone call. The thing is very odd, but(much as I do not like Obama)I do not think he did it for ego reasons. He is too saavy politically for that.

jeanie on July 26, 2008 at 8:58 PM

I’m voting for Obama. I want history to record that I went with the choice of a winner, a saviour of mankind, one who stopped the oceans from rising.

I also yearn for my taxes to go up substantially because I feel guilty for earning so much money, so easily, and for not allowing my leaders to redistribute it to the poor of the U.S. and the world, at their will.

Further, I look forward to at least 3 SCOTUS judges, of either side, to retire, or die, during the next 8 Obama years, and for him to replace them with anyone he chooses. I wish to be on that side of history, for the sake of absolute justice for all, especially for the poor criminals, gang members, illegal immigrant criminals, who’re discriminated against the most. Also, more domains, in fact any which will benefit the government, should be paif for cheaply, and converted for the good of the many.

Also, it’s high time that all troops come home, including from Germany, South Korea, and Japan. We’ll put them to work at raising barriers, to keep the oceans from flooding all of us. Al Gore will be in charge of this project. All terrorist activities should be handled as criminal cases, on a one by one, in our U.S. courts, or in the world courts.

I also favor all decisions pertaining to wars, of any kind, no matter how many attacks on our country, to be made by the U.N. In fact, I favor all U.S. foreign policy henceforth to be transferred to the U.N. The rest of the world will love us for it, and it’s high time that we show cooperation with the rest of humankind.

Enough of this American individualism and looking out for the best of the U.S. Too much freedom and liberties are not good and lead to wealth, arrogance, and dominance. Cooperation among all nations, on any international topics is in order and Obama is right. Our time has come. By “our” I mean us, the citizen of the world.

I look forward to working less, to cheat more on the effort and the hours, in other words to just go with the socialist flow. I hear socialsm offers a worker’s paradise and I look forward to live that easier life.

All energy sources should be nationalized. Enough of the rich magnats, the billionaire bastards who run the energy corporations, while we have to pay over $4.00/gallon of gas. Lock them up and take all their resources. Let the Obama Department of Energy take a lesson from the great Hugo Chavez. He’s lifting every Venezuelan from poverty and it is high time to repeat the effort in the U.S. Every U.S. working class citizen, or non-citizen, deserves this privilage.

At leat once a year every U.S. citizen should be forced to serve in one or another capacity, for free, in the service of our country. No, I don’t mean the military (screw them), I mean civic services, to do good in one form or another. We owe this to our fellow citizens.

The ownership of home pets should be forbidden. We have needs for starving children in Bangladesh and the ownership of pets is a luxury, and should be abolished. It is natural to allow animals to just roam and fend for themselves. Let them go back to nature where they came from, before man spoiled them rotten.

On children, having one is the ideal, with two an absolute maximum. We’ll look to China to learn a thing or two on population control.

If you don’t like any of this, you’re heartless, a racist, or both.

The ironic part of the ad is that it features Obama with the troops … from :15 - :21 … from the video where he is in Kuwait with the troops and sank his 3-pointer. The sad part is that this ad will run lesser number of times than the original video which ran on all news channels.

sanjeevn on July 26, 2008 at 9:57 PM

Spin this any way you wish, the fact remains that he could have gone to visit the troops just as he alleges to have done at Walter Reed,in anonimity.

looks like his patriotism wasn’t strong enough to overcome the lack of a photo-op.

Putz.

Unless she’s over 50

He’s in love with a really old stripper?

AZCoyote on July 26, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Satin would be more like something that John Edwards(Silky Pony) would Fall into love with..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satin

Satin is a cloth that typically has a glossy surface and a dull back. It is a warp-dominated weaving technique that forms a minimum number of interlacings in a fabric. If a fabric is formed with a satin weave using filament fibers such as silk, nylon, or polyester, the corresponding fabric is termed a “satin”.

Not to be confused with Satan..

Just under 100 days out from election day and McCain’s run for president has already jumped the shark. Only question is how many (R’s) will he bring down with him? He needs to come clean and move away from Bush if he wants to grab anyone remotely moderate on election day.

McCain jumps the shark.

Hey, “Allahpundit.” I have been reading this site for a while now and you are pretty pathetic. Either you are defending Obama or making it obvious you are scared to dealth of the Community Organizer. This is a great ad. The only way to beat the Democrats is to stand up to them and shove it right back down their thoats. But you always seem to think any attack the Republicans make will “backfire” on them. Get over your fear of Obama and the liberal media and grow a pair!

DWMT4867 on July 27, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I am not sure if Obamassiah is a sociopath but am pretty certain he is a big earred carricature of a foolish, vacuous, narcissist, inexperienced, anti-capitalist, communist/marxist, politician with less gravitas than an empty potatoe chip bag, and a following made up of an equally brain dead mix of Brittani Spears, Paris Hilton upskirt peekers, mainstream media whores, underwear sniffing college professors and those who get their information from television because they are either too dumb or lazy to read.
