WSJ poll: It’s the energy, stupid — er, Pelosi

The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC poll underscores what many of us already know about the most critical issue in this election — and it’s not Iraq. Energy and fuel prices dominate the electoral choice for voters this fall, thanks to the sharp cost increase in just about everything connected with transportation. And while Democrats have an edge in this area, it has sharply eroded:
Congress will likely break for the summer without passing legislation to curb high gasoline prices. But Americans are fashioning their own energy policy, founded on conservation and support for more production.
A new Wall Street Journal/NBC news poll finds that energy — including gasoline and utility costs — ranks as the economic issue that voters say affects them the most personally. ….
Polls indicate voters trust Democrats over Republicans, by substantial margins, to do a better job on energy. The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that 42% of respondents preferred Democrats for dealing with energy policy, versus 22% favoring Republicans.
The poll indicated that Democrats’ edge on the issue may be slipping; the July poll gave Democrats a 20-point advantage on the issue, versus a 28-point lead in a January poll by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News.
If Congress does break for the summer without a debate on energy, expect those numbers to slip much farther. Americans want to start using more domestic supplies, and not just for price relief in the next few years. They have finally begun to realize that sending hundreds of billions of dollars overseas and inflating the price of oil benefit those whose don’t like Americans. It amounts to a price support for terror-funding regimes like Iran and Sudan, and in fact has helped Iran survive the international sanctions designed to stop their uranium-enrichment program.
Nancy Pelosi hasn’t gotten the message yet, and the Washington Post notices:
WHY NOT have a vote on offshore drilling? There’s a serious debate to be had over whether Congress should lift the ban on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf that has been in place since 1981. Unfortunately, you won’t be hearing it in the House of Representatives — certainly, you won’t find lawmakers voting on it — anytime soon.
Instead of dealing with the issue on the merits, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a staunch opponent of offshore drilling, has simply decreed that she will not allow a drilling vote to take place on the House floor. Why not? “What the president would like to do is to have validation for his failed policy,” she said yesterday when asked that very question. “What we’re saying is, ‘Exhaust other remedies, Mr. President.’ . . . It is the economic life of America’s families, and to suggest that drilling offshore is going to make a difference to them paycheck to paycheck now is a frivolous contention. The president has even admitted that. So what we’re saying is, ‘What can we do that is constructive?’ ”
If there is an explanation buried in there about why that makes offshore drilling off-limits for a vote, we missed it.
Right now the Democrats have become so frightened of this debate that they have attempted to ram through appropriations bills without debate or amendment to keep Republicans from forcing the issue to the floor. As a result, both chambers may wind up adjourning without passing anything — appropriations or energy policy. It would be the first time in almost 60 years that Congress went into its summer break without having passed any of the appropriations bills necessary for the next fiscal year.
Welcome to the do-nothing Congress, take 2.
Republicans have a wide opening here. The Senate caucus looks firm in its insistence on keeping the energy debate open until a vote on drilling takes place. If Democrats continue to obstruct it in either or both chambers, expect that 20-point lead on energy to dissipate rapidly. The GOP and John McCain have already begun hammering Barack Obama on his refusal to countenance increased oil production in the US. They will flood the airwaves to remind voters which party has blocked consideration of the option favored by 70% of the electorate.

Trust them to do what? Keep pushing the issue farther and farther back into the corner while the average middle income worker is struggling to choose between food for his family and fuel to get to work with? The Democrats have not done damned thing to try to curtail the current energy crisis, other than say idiotic things like coal and oil make us sick and that we Americans need to be weaned off of oil. I mean, why are people out there still voting to keep these useless dunderheads in office?

these polls that favor the democrats say more about the intelligence of the responders than the positions of the party.
right4life on July 25, 2008 at 9:16 AM
The congressional ban on new drilling must be renewed yearly and signed into law by the president. That means that the formerly Republican congress, and Bush, are as guilty as the Democommies for the current mess. I cannot, however, imagine that the ban will be renewed this year.

The reason the Democrat leadership does not want a vote on drilling is that it would pass because of there own party members voting for it. That would be bad for their enviro-wacko supporters.

They are letting them off the hook! This because these are John McNumbnuts close personal friends whom he has crossed the aisle on many occasions to get work done on behalf of the American people…and now when he has an opportunity to score political points he can’t because his friends are not in the Republican party…they are DemocRATs!!!

I really hope Sen. McCain starts doing a bunch of appearances from oil rigs, nuclear power plants, maybe including mini-nuclear generating stations, etc. He could own the whole enchilada: a huge step toward energy independence, plentiful high-paying jobs, clean abundant energy, lasting relief at the filling station, and easing of utility and grocery costs.
Maybe he could commission an underwater video of the ocean ecology that develops around offshore oil rigs. Sea life loves ‘em!

Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure the
dems will ride to the rescue of middle and lower income families next winter with more energy/heating bailout programs that we can all pay for. nothing like buying votes with taxpayers money, and they get to expand the nanny state at the same time.

Here’s the plan for simple ads, but effective.
Show gas prices in 2001, 2006 and 2008. Note the spike (highest) price by DATE. Show President Bush (note the DATE) announcing that he’s lifting the ban on offshore drilling. Show the price now. Gas has dropped 35 cents (now $3.87/gallon) in Indiana since President Bush made the announcement.

Who in their right mind could believe the dimocrats are better at solving our energy crisis? Just because they have caused it over decades of denial doesn’t mean they are now capable of reversing policy. I guess the dumbing down of America is the one thing government has done well.

Pelosi and Reid are bringing congress to a standstill and not debating or passing anything of import because they expect Obama to become President. If he does, then expect their agenda to be ramrodded through Congress in the first 100 days.

I love the argument, “Well, how would you like an oil well (or refinery) in your back yard.
Well, it would have to be very small. But I’d like it just fine. Then I’d likely have another commissioning job where I had a really short commute to work, and the members of my community would have more employment opportunities.
I could always follow up with, “How would you like a homeless shelter in your back yard. Now go back-off in your own jack yard!”

Disgraceful.

I take great pleasure in placing a daily call to my Democrat representative (Andre Carson) and senator (Evan Bayh). I simply enjoy explaining to them that I’m d*mned sick and tired of them playing politics with my wallet. My “discussion” with their staff: I’m more important than caribou or polar bears” and here I sit, age 63, planning to retire while I watch my 401k melt before my eyes because of the price of energy. I continue with, d*mn shame that we have oil in Alaska, midwest (shale), off the coast of California, off the coast of Florida – and they won’t give us the ability to get at it.

I think I won a voter last night. Was doing business with a guy who makes over $240m a year (sales) and he was ripping on Bush, so I figured him for an Obambi disciple, but he didn’t say it.
We got to talking about income and his happy new $360,000 home, and I mentioned that my daughter is an intern with the top tax accounting firm in Chicago, and just finished an analysis for the partners of the Brookings/Urban Institute Tax Policy Center’s event on the candidates’ tax positions.
I cheerfully informed him that if Obama is elected, with the Dem congress support, his taxes will go up over $1,000 a month, making this new mortgage payment very exciting, indeed.
He looks at his sig-oth and says, “that was easy – eff it, McCain”. Great slogan…

I’m convinced that a lot of people participating in these polls do not know that the Democrats are in control of Congress. They think “Bush and the Republicans” are still running everything and that Bush wants high gas prices to make his oil baron pals rich. I don’t know how we break through that in 100 days before the election, but we have to.
I’d like to see a real mean, nasty ad by the RNC that shows Nancy Pelosi’s mansion in San Francisco, and the billionaire’s mansion where Obama had that fundraiser and talked about all the bitter people in Pennsylvania clinging to their guns and religion, showing the people how out of touch these limousine liberals are. Throw in Ted Kennedy opposing the wind farm for good measure. These people are fiddling while Rome is burning. Shame on the Republican Party if it fails to show this to the voters.

If it would bring my gas prices down to $1.50 a gallon, or better yet reap some profits because it is on my land, I wouldn’t mind drilling in my LIVING ROOM.

Hmmm, let’s see, what else can you do that might be constructive, besides sitting there with your thumbs up your arse that is…? Gee, maybe we could start working on this problem right now, start drilling now, so that later, years down the road, you won’t still be asking that same ignorant question with your thumbs up your butt.

In hammering the Democrats over their stonewalling now, the GOP needs to remind the voters who has been blocking drilling and the building of new refineries for the last 20 years. Give dates and quotes.
This is a winning issue for those with the brains to grab it.
Unfortunately, the brains requirement excludes most of the GOP leadership. They’d rather get along than win.

When you have leaders that are so intellectually corrupt as Reid and Pelosi, how can we turn Congress over to these losers. They preached CHANGE during the 2006 elections. Gas was 2.00, unemployment was qt 4.5% and the market was near 14,000. They sure changed it. Elect Obama and give him a democratic Congress and American life will cease to exist as we know it. The Constitution will not be worth the paper it is written on.

right4life on July 25, 2008 at 10:18 AM
What really beats me about people is that they vote in a democratic congress, because they’re unhappy with the republican one. The congress turns out to be totally incompetent, with a democratic speaker of the house who is worse than incompetent. Would a normal thinking person not ask themselves if the current crop of democrats are perhaps not as good at running a country as they think they are? Yet somehow, everything is still the republicans’ fault.
Now people are all set to vote in a democratic president, because they’re unhappy with the republican one. This president will also turn out to be worse than hopelessly incompetent. Yet everything will still remain the republicans’ fault. Magic, it must be the Obama feeling.

All the other options have been exhausted.
Wind isn’t going nowhere because it doesn’t work.
Solar isn’t going anywhere because it doesn’t work.
Increasing fuel economy isn’t going anywhere because it doesn’t work and the people don’t want it.
The ONLY thing left is drilling and nuclear. Two options that the Democrats have been blocking for 20 years and more.
MarkTheGreat on July 25, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Let me second that emotion.
This would be a great commercial. Chart how all of these factors have “improved” since Democrats took control of congress, then ask
Do you really want to give them control over all branches of govt?
MarkTheGreat on July 25, 2008 at 10:24 AM
As someone else pointed out, a significant fraction of the population still thinks that Republicans control congress.
The fact that the Democrats have in control for the last two years needs to be hammered home, over and over again.

She seems sooooo desperate with this stance. I hope the imbicile Democrat voters start to see that their leadership wants them to suffer so they can win elections. Disgrace.
marklmail on July 25, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Just a thought. I don’t think that we should be fooled by McCain’s push for more nuclear generation capacity, it won’t do a thing for oil usage. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t move to total nuclear power generation – we should, but I feel that his attitude towards drilling for more oil is in the same vein as his commitment to border security – virtually none.

There’s only one reason Pelosi opposes offshore drilling: She’s scared it will ruin the views from her seaside home. It’s the reason why all rich Californians oppose offshore drilling. It has nothing to do with saving the environment.

Allowing a vote in the House will cost Democrats seats no matter which way they vote. A vote for drilling will upset the nutroots and you are likely to see repeats of what happened with Joe Lieberman. A vote against drilling will upset the general population and cost them the seat outright. If Republicans had any sense they would be forcing this issue in the House just like the Senate is doing. It could open the door to regaining a majority.

I don’t know how many redstaters are going to tolerate a blue state agenda being forced down their throats. If the Republican party and American people can’t take an issue with 70% approval by the American public and turn it into a takeover of the Presidency, Congress and Senate. Then we are doomed to be ruled by the environmental wacko, communist left in a fashion that speaker Pelosi deems to be in our best interest.
Virtually every bill passing out of these broken bodies anymore is unconstitutional and serves only the entrenched incumbants.
If not this issue then I don’t see one that will break the cylce of dependence on a bunch of socialist/marxist loosers and may as well forfiet my paycheck and stay home and collect the benefits congress deems me worthy of having.

Yesterday when I saw Pelosi’s short clip explaining she couldn’t do anything because of Bush’s failed policy, ‘incredulous’ came to mind.
Is she saying Congress is powerless and being held hostage by the executive branch?
She holds the Speaker of the House position, together with her counterpart in the Senate (and she doesn’t even have to fight Reid for the same position), they are the LEADERS of the legislative branch. Yet they couldn’t DO anything.
Maybe Pelosi should be filming the commercial
“Help! I am falling. I couldn’t get up.”
Sir Napsalot on July 25, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Yesterday, as I listened to an audio of Speaker Pelosi on a related matter [the let's get rid of our parachute, the Strategic Reserve, to lighten the load demand] she said something true: The oil belongs to the American people. [may not be an exact quote but what I remember].
So true.
And the same goes for the oil we can drill for!

My new Congressman (Steve Scalise, who took Jindal’s old seat) conducted a telephone town hall meeting the other day and REPEATEDLY gave out Pelosi’s phone number advising people who are mad about gas prices to call her. The poll conducted during the phone call was about drilling as well. I hope it’s an indicator of where the GOP is going with this issue – it’s the only thing that will save us from a filibuster-proof Dem majority.

If they do adjourn without passing the appropriations bills, and the new fiscal year starts October 1, there could be a showdown on a Government shutdown if the Senate Republicans filibuster everything unless offshore drilling is authorized. I’m not sure whether they have the stomach to do that, but it might work IF the entire party is united to make this THE wedge issue of the campaign, and EXPLAIN to the voters that drilling is the only way to bring down oil prices, both in the short term and long term. Long term (2-5 years), when the oil actually comes out of the ground, but also short term, because the same speculators that bid up the price on the anticipation of supply shortages will dump oil contracts in anticipation of increased supply, and try to make money elsewhere. This could be tricky to explain to the average voter who doesn’t understand commodity trading as well as Hillary Clinton, so a massive, clearly expressed campaign is needed.
The campaign needs to also stress that the effects of high oil prices go beyond the price of filling up their cars or heating their homes. High diesel prices also increase the cost of trucking products to market, which causes the price of everything else to go up, including food. More Drilling = Cheaper Oil = Cheaper everything else, and more American jobs.
I certainly hope so. But they also need to explain that, although 41+ Senators can force some issues as a minority, one woman (Pelosi) can block everything if the Democrats have a House majority, even if some Democrats favor offshore drilling. If a voter wants offshore drilling, he/she MUST vote Republican, regardless of other issues, EVEN if the Democrat candidate in the district favors drilling, because that Representative doesn’t decide–it’s either Pelosi or Boehner. If Pelosi doesn’t cave before the election, this could be the Republican Party’s way to take back the House.
