Why Obama snubbed the troops: no photo op allowed

NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube get the skinny on the abrupt cancellation of Barack Obama’s visit to Landstuhl and Ramstein yesterday. The campaign tried to excuse it by claiming that it wouldn’t be appropriate to visit while on a campaign-funded portion of his trip, but that wasn’t the real problem. When Obama found out he couldn’t use the visit as a photo op, he canceled:
One military official who was working on the Obama visit said because political candidates are prohibited from using military installations as campaign backdrops, Obama’s representatives were told, “he could only bring two or three of his Senate staff member, no campaign officials or workers.” In addition, “Obama could not bring any media. Only military photographers would be permitted to record Obama’s visit.”
The official said “We didn’t know why” the request to visit the wounded troops was withdrawn. “He (Obama) was more than welcome. We were all ready for him.”
In fact, those same rules applied for the CODEL trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. They serve to keep politicians from exploiting military facilities for political reasons, and to ensure that all visitors get treated fairly. Andrea Mitchell, also of NBC, complained of this very issue during the earlier visits with the troops when she told Chris Matthews that the media couldn’t get access to Obama when visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This makes the decision track very clear. Obama and his team set up the visits to military installations before going overseas. After seeing how the media got excluded in Iraq and Afghanistan, they decided it wasn’t worth traveling to Ramstein and Landstuhl to visit the severely wounded troops because they couldn’t bring the campaign and get the photo ops they wanted. Instead, Obama went shopping in Berlin.
As I wrote yesterday, that’s certainly a revealing set of priorities for a man who wants to lead these troops as Commander in Chief.

He could have gone if he really wanted to. He could have gone by himself in the dark of the night or he could have pitched a major fit about not being allowed to go. He more than deserves to have his cornflakes pissed in.

According to Obama’s campaign NOW it was the Pentagon that said stay away.
tree hugging sister on July 25, 2008 at 12:09 PM
The Pentagon has indeed reported they did not tell Obama he couldn’t go, they just reminded him of the limitations (no press, no photographers other than military).
I can’t believe Mitchell spun it the way she did. It’s appalling.

Wouldn’t you be much more at ease at a site that caters to your views, and does not print anything that disagrees with Obama’s version of events?
If this was such a traumatic lie by hotair, then please consider this your invitation to go to the huffington post. I get the feeling that you will be very happy at a place that consists only of wall to wall Obama adoration, and hatred for all things conservative and republican, Dave.

The surprise is not that he didn’t visit our troops but if he had gone to visit our service men and women.
As I have indicated before, with BO as commander-in-chief, enlistments and re-enlistments will decline and the probability of reactivating the military draft will increase.

Dave,
He insists this is “not a campaign tour” of any sort; that he is there as a senator and - as he said at the opening of his speech - “not as a candidate for President”.
Why then would he opt out of the one portion of the trip where he would be allowed to bring only 2-3 of his senatorial staffers, no campaign staff and no press? Seems that would have made the troop visit far more in line with his claims of senatorial duty than massive rallies in front of the Victory Column.
Perhaps you can give me a nuance tune up.
RDuke on July 25, 2008 at 12:19 PM
Must be nice for a man who supposedly CARES so MUCH about America, that he won’t even visit troops who are wounded and could also be a “vote”.
Berlin isn’t all that… besides they cost you to damn much.

Soldiers are not commodities. What you seem to be saying is that as long as he got in his obligatory troop visits in Kuwait and Afghanistan he reached his quota and the visit with the injured soldiers in Germany was unnecessary. “Kuwait- check; Afghanistan- check, no more soldiers on the To Do list.”

sanjeevn on July 25, 2008 at 12:00 PM
You forgot to state the finer details: that the Ramstein stop had been PLANNED and then canceled, that the Iraq and Afghanistan visits didn’t involve a stupendous speech, that the visits in the middle-east allowed photogs but the Ramstein visit didn’t.
Spin all you want but its too late to nuance this in a positive way, too late for Baracky too.

OT: I am watching the Obama/Sarkozy press conference and Christiane Amanpour just exhibited some of the most blatant BO suck-up-i-ness when asking a loaded question of Sarkozy while at the same time talking about how wonderful BO is - I damn near threw my coffee cup at my tv. I agree with posters above - BO is the anti-Christ - my boyfriend and I just discussed this in detail last night…(and I am not an overtly religious person - but somethings cannot be ignored). He visited the other troops only because they happened to be in the places he had to visit to make him look “Commander in Chiefy.” That’s it. As far as the campaign agenda, it’s all about the basketball or gym workouts. Paraplegic and burn victim troops just aren’t sexy enough for his image.
Cue Obama world president theme song:

It hurts when the lack of character of your man is revealed.
He had a choice, visit the wounded or campaign with photo ops…he chose the photo ops.
Has he ever visited any wounded soldier overseas? without a photo op?
Maybe he could request to be president, but not “Commander OF Chief”…that would be more in his line of what he thinks the President is.

With the “good leadership” of the Clintons and the UN we got FFO and allowed Hussein to commit countless atrocities, not to mention fund, harbor and train terrorists, (including Al Queda). If we had done the job correctly under Bush I, we wouldn’t have had to bring SH down and make Iraq an example to the other ME nations who refuse to join the civilized nations of 21st century…It was our karmic duty to take him out and stay in Iraq long enough to ensure that they could defend themselves.
Certainly we cannot be the police force of the world, but wringing our hands at this late date saying: ‘We shouldn’t have invaded Iraq!’ is not only stupid, it’s non-productive, even destructive to the higher goal.
BTW: Will Obama supply us with more of the same good leadership? Will he personally lead all our brave troops out of Iraq so that Iran can take over? What is his plan anyway?

Well it looks like Obama may be getting that bounce after all. The one that it was declared that he didn’t/wouldn’t get because he fracked up so badly.
Friday, July 25, 2008
1) The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows a bounce for Barack Obama. The presumptive Democratic nominee attracts 46% of the vote while John McCain earns 41%. When “leaners” are included, it’s Obama 49% and McCain 44%. Just three days ago, the candidates were tied at 46% (with leaners).
2) Barack Obama has expanded his lead over John McCain in the Tuesday through Thursday Gallup Poll Daily tracking rolling average, and now has a 47% to 41% advantage over his Republican challenger.
Know why? Because Obama is looking at the forest and Republicans are looking at the trees, like the subject of this thread. Obama is thinking strategically. Republicans are thinking tactically and not even doing that right as they are mostly just going for attempted “gotchas”.

You sound a lot like someone I used to know back in 2000.
Maybe I’m missing something here. I mean, we’re going to have kind of a nation-building corps from America? Absolutely not. Our military’s meant to fight and win war. That’s what it’s meant to do. And when it gets overextended, morale drops. But I’m going to be judicious as to how to use the military. It needs to be in our vital interest, the mission needs to be clear, and the exit strategy obvious.

I remember when Ronald Wilson Reagan was the antichrist because he had 6 letters in each of his three names = 666.
While I don’t hold to making names into numbers, it should be noted that the biblical antichrist is foretold to unexpectedly rise to global power, bring peace between Israel and its enemies (Arabs) after a failed invasion attempt by the armies of the north (Iraq and/or Iran), help them rebuild their temple in Jerusalem (the location is currently an Islamic holy site), only to later betray their trust and declare himself the messiah. Very unlikely scenario in today’s climate. This would have to be someone very charismatic, with ties to, or at least the respect of, both the Jews (perhaps via his Christian cred) and to the Arabs (perhaps via his Islamic roots.) Sound familiar… just sayin’
Also, most bible scholars say that the antichrist will rise up from Europe because of the prophecy in the book of Daniel of the little horn rising up from the 10 other horns (10 remnant nations of the roman empire, aka Europe), to eventually dominate them. Could this not be the United States (the little horn), a small nation that rose up from remnants of Europe (10 horns), to dominate them. Hmmmmmmm. I wonder who were the three horns that were immediately torn down during the rise of the “little horn”?

Or could the antichrist be that “sweet guy” that Bush and Blair were caught talking about on the “hot” mic in the G8 summit a couple of years back.

Hey 10 horns that has a new one destroy 3 of them, leaves 8. The G8!! The antichrist will be from the G8!!

I heard tell; someone said…”He’d be wearing a blue turban?”

The proof that Hussein canceled is in a piece reported on the Politico where a NAMED pentagon official states they (the Pentagon) told Hussein’s campaign he could not use the visit for CAMPAIGN purposes as reported by Ed above, whereupon Hussein canceled.
He doesn’t give a rats backside for the troops, only and ever the PHOTO OP.

Hey 10 + 1 - 3 = 8 is just as valid as 18 = 3 * 6 ~ 666 .

Maybe Barry wouldn’t have been able to resist slapping one of the wounded troops a la Patton — only he’d have done it for the opposite reason!
