Why Obama snubbed the troops: no photo op allowed

posted at 7:21 am on July 25, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube get the skinny on the abrupt cancellation of Barack Obama’s visit to Landstuhl and Ramstein yesterday.  The campaign tried to excuse it by claiming that it wouldn’t be appropriate to visit while on a campaign-funded portion of his trip, but that wasn’t the real problem.  When Obama found out he couldn’t use the visit as a photo op, he canceled:

One military official who was working on the Obama visit said because political candidates are prohibited from using military installations as campaign backdrops, Obama’s representatives were told, “he could only bring two or three of his Senate staff member, no campaign officials or workers.” In addition, “Obama could not bring any media. Only military photographers would be permitted to record Obama’s visit.”

The official said “We didn’t know why” the request to visit the wounded troops was withdrawn. “He (Obama) was more than welcome. We were all ready for him.”

In fact, those same rules applied for the CODEL trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. They serve to keep politicians from exploiting military facilities for political reasons, and to ensure that all visitors get treated fairly. Andrea Mitchell, also of NBC, complained of this very issue during the earlier visits with the troops when she told Chris Matthews that the media couldn’t get access to Obama when visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This makes the decision track very clear.  Obama and his team set up the visits to military installations before going overseas.  After seeing how the media got excluded in Iraq and Afghanistan, they decided it wasn’t worth traveling to Ramstein and Landstuhl to visit the severely wounded troops because they couldn’t bring the campaign and get the photo ops they wanted.  Instead, Obama went shopping in Berlin.

As I wrote yesterday, that’s certainly a revealing set of priorities for a man who wants to lead these troops as Commander in Chief.

B.O. didn’t want to see the troops because he doesn’t care about them one whit. All he cares about is power and the acquisition of it.

As a Viet Nam era veteran, I now just don’t to see him lose in November. I want to see him publicly humiliated.

As I wrote yesterday, that’s certainly a revealing set of priorities for a man who wants to lead these troops as Commander in Chief.

Obama is running for Imperious Leader of the World. He needs to keep up his image — just like any rock star or other celebrity. That means a lot of shopping, especially in Europe, because Europe is more cultured and therefore more fashionable than in the U.S. So shopping is a high priority for him — far higher than doing something he doesn’t want to do (visit wounded troops) for which he receives no reward (photo op).

Outlander on July 25, 2008 at 7:32 AM

Let’s see: “Why should I go visit wounder soliders if I don’t get any credit for it, the photo-op. and a boost in the pools?”

For one that perceives himself to be the second coming, that’s not a very “Christ-like” attitude. Seems to me it’s more anti-Christ.

Rod on July 25, 2008 at 7:33 AM

Man, what a awful sentence!

It’s going to be a damn shame if the messiah implodes before he’s even nominated. Remember we got rid of Howard Dean too soon, and Jean Francois wasn’t half as fun. People People People, wait until he’s officially nominated. We’re Americans – we can stand it for a month more, THEN let him hit the fan!

Marcus on July 25, 2008 at 7:46 AM

These soldiers are only wounded because they did not listen to Barack’s wise judgment. To reward them with the grace of his presence would only be rewarding negative behavior and keep them from learning.

snaggletoothie on July 25, 2008 at 7:46 AM

A wounded soldier would upstage him. Can’t have that.

Wow – what a P.O.S.!

This man is not qualified to be a night security guard at the sewage treatment plant and people want him to become the most powerful man on the planet.

What say you lefty trolls – this snub shows his true character. It is not what you do when everyone is watching (i.e. photo ops) but what you do when nobody is watching (visiting wounded troops without the press corp).

My best sports analogy is pro-basketball players who are always in need of an “image coach” due to their general lack of character. Compare that with hockey players who always seem to pop up at charity events, childrens hospitals etc., completely unannounced to just bring some joy to a kids life. Hockey players are a little rough around the edges (like John McCain) but they are real people whom you can trust for good character and judgement.

barack hussein obama is showing more and more that he is nothing but “silver spoon in his mouth” trash.

This latest excuse still doesn’t pass the smell test. The military footage of the only basketball shot ever made and his glad handing in Iraq and Afghanistan are the most compelling footage he has from this trip so far. The military photos from a visit to the German bases would be the same so I think he’s scared to death that someone injured in Iraq would ask him why he wanted to make that soldiers injury irrelevant.

While in Israel Wed. Obama was desperate to photo op with the families of our killed by Hezbollah prisoners, Regev & Goldwasser. The families were still in the 7 day period of mourning and declined.. He opted instead to photo op with a family in Sderot who’s home was destroyed by Hamas rockets.

The Obama camp’s spin is going to be that they were forced to cancel by the Pentagon, a spin that will be quickly parroted by the big media outlets (see Andrea Mitchell this morning). Hopefully, someone either there or at Landstuhl or Ramstein has either written or audio documentation to show whether or not this claim is true or as real as Obama’s position on the Senate Banking Committee.

A bit OT here, but watching FOX yesterday, apparently there was a moment on one of the planes coming from Iraq, when Obama was wondering why FOX News was on most places he went. The Pentagon told Obama that he could not bring campaign staff or photographers along and that the visit had to be part of his Congressional trip. I think that Sens. Hagel and Reed had already come home after they visited Iraq, so there wasn’t any delegation left. But that’s just poor planning by Obama’s staff, not the fault of the Pentagon.

Which is it? It’s an important distinction.

MayBee on July 25, 2008 at 10:21 AM

That Pentagon excuse is bs too. I’m pretty sure all he had to do was inform the military that as a Senator he wanted to visit, outside the scope of campaign trip, and military transportation would have been arranged.

The way I heard the story spinned by the old media (i.e., local news) is that Obama was a victim of the (implied, racist and political) Pentagon.

Sir Napsalot on July 25, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Boy, Obama’s peeps are really spinning this one…I even was starting to believe them…not. It’s all the Pentagon and McCain’s faults which means it’s a conspiracy to make him look bad is what Matthews and Olbermann will be repeating today. Maybe Jesse Jackson did find a way remove his nuts after all.

deedledee on July 25, 2008 at 10:40 AM

I wasn’t sure what to think of this. My initial reaction to his cancellation was to think it was pretty low of him to drop this visit if his schedule got delayed as opposed to dropping something else. Then his campaign announced that they felt it was inappropriate to visit the troops on a campaign trip. That made sense to me, but I couldn’t figure out why it would be a problem if he just didn’t take any media folks with him. No one could complain if he used campaign funds to get there, but then didn’t have any photos taken other than what the wounded soldiers chose to take personally. Then his campaign made it sound like the Pentagon told him to get lost. That made no sense. So of course it turns out to be this: they told him to come but leave the reporters out. Suddenly, he decided it wasn’t worth it. That’s illuminating and what it shows about his thinking is not very nice.

Jill1066 on July 25, 2008 at 10:40 AM

Miklaszewski says Obama could have gone, he just couldn’t bring staff and photogs with him.
Mitchell says Obama wanted to go, but the Pentagon told him he couldn’t. period.

If Miklaszewski is correct, Mitchell is covering up for Obama in a huge way. If Mitchell is correct, then I can’t blame Obama for what I’ve been thinking was a HUGE mistake.

MayBee on July 25, 2008 at 10:40 AM

It won’t really matter why Obama cancelled his visit to the wounded heroes at Landstuhl, it’s the perception that the future commander-in-chief couldn’t leave his media entourage behind for a quiet bedside visit just to say thanks for those who have sacrificed so much for their country.

eigafan on July 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Call me racist for all I care.

Just imagine a white candidate (e.g., JFKerry) pulling the same stunt (skipping Landstuhl, giving a lecture speech in Berlin, visiting Afghanistan base for barely 1 hr and not talking/shaking hands to soldiers), what would we call him?

But since it is Obama, media plus half of the country plus rest of the world are ok with it.

Obama’s speech to 200,000 and the world is a huge success and appears on the front cover of every newspaper on the planet. I totally understand why sites like this feel the need to find some way to pee in his cornflakes.

So you take a cancelled visit to soldiers, spin some half-truths about why it was cancelled, and try to paint a hates the troops card/ego is his priority over the soldiers etc etc etc.

You have no proof of what the reason was for the cancellation. Nothing. Nada. You speculate it was because he couldn’t use the soldiers as a photo opp, and suddenly that’s a fact? Where’s your proof he went shopping in Berlin instead?

A bit OT here, but watching FOX yesterday, apparently there was a moment on one of the planes coming from Iraq, when Obama was wondering why FOX News was on most places he went. He thought it was mandated by the President. Major Garret who overheard, corrected him and told him that the troops could choose any station they wanted. It was awesome.

Absolutely wonderful. And I am pretty sure that when Obama wants to sit down and watch ‘the news,’ he turns to MSNBC first.

Fox News really is like holy water to a vampire – for all of the liberals out there. They can’t imagine any ‘normal person’ who would actually want to watch Fox News.

It’s official: I have ODS.

“Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has instructed U.S. overseas missions to provide only minimal support to foreign visits by the two main presidential candidates, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain, forbidding diplomats to hold events or arrange meetings for them.”

Very interesting… just before Obama is about to make a trip?

In any event Obama has been visiting with the troops during his entire trip. Now he obeys the pentagon concerning use of campaign funds when making visits and the wingnuts get their underwear all bundled up!

Damned if you do, darned if you don’t, drive on soldier!

I was thinking the exact same thing this morning.

Weren’t the most of you complaining that Obama’s video with the troops, (and his 3-pointer basketball shot) only 72 hours before, was being shown too much ??

Dave Rywall on July 25, 2008 at 10:52 AM

That was worth a smirk. You don’t get much attention elsewhere, do you?

reaganaut on July 25, 2008 at 11:41 AM

You’re grasping at straws to try to rain on the parade. I’m just pointing it out- I don’t know why you’re all denying the fact that you’re trying to find things to spoil his wildly successful Eurotour.

Dave Rywall on July 25, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Wildly successful? Here’s a quote from a local.

Klaus Bölling, a former government spokesman under ex-Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, told SPIEGEL ONLINE: “It was a sermon and an unsuccessful one at that. The intellectual gulf between him and John F. Kennedy could not be overlooked. Apart from the niceties and talk about Berliners’ love of freedom, there wasn’t a single original thought. Instead, there was just a feeling of ‘All people should become brothers.’ A world without nuclear weapons? sanjeevn on July 25, 2008 at 11:37 AM

Well…..yeah, when the vid is looped for the entire newscast and in the background the commenters are gushing about how its so great to have a nominee who looks so good shooting hoops.

Bishop on July 25, 2008 at 11:53 AM

Well, Dave, why was it canceled?
What could possibly be a good enough reason for a potential Commander in Chief to opt not to visit troops abroad when he has time to do other things?

MayBee on July 25, 2008 at 11:16 AM

I just received an e-mail from an individual in Afghanistan and he said that obambi walked right past the line waiting to greet him and did not so much as nod his precious head toward them, no thank yous or hand shakes..just wanted to get to the tent for his photo-op playing b-ball…

twiggman on July 25, 2008 at 8:07 AM

Overheard Obama campaign conversation just prior to Landstuhl cancellation:

“SENATOR, EVEN WITH THE MILITARY PHOTOGS MANY OF THESE GUYS WON’T EVEN BE ABLE TO PLAY BASKETBALL! SO…SHOULD WE REALLY WASTE TIME WITH LAME KILLERS WHILE IN GERMANY WHEN, UNLIKE YOUR MAGNIFICENT SPEECH AND BACKDROP, THEY REPRESENT THE WORST OF NAZI TACTICS AND NOT THE BEST?” (Then more faint in the background: “Senator, we have Bild reporter Judith Bonesky on line 2″)

econavenger on July 25, 2008 at 11:53 AM

MayBee – how the fu*k would I know why it was cancelled? Maybe you should ask the Obama camp. You see, I don’t just make sh*t up like HotAir did in this case

Hotair didn’t make anything up. Those that have asked the Obama camp have gotten various responses or no response. So HotAir and commenters are going by what reporters with access to information are saying.
Why is that such a problem for you?

OMG that is the BEST

marklmail on July 25, 2008 at 11:54 AM

As I said yesterday, all STYLE, no SUBSTANCE. As I check the NEWS this AM, I can not believe the FAWNING MSM is still doing over this EMPTY SUIT. However, a light may be at the end of the ol’ tunnel. The only POLL I even pay attention to, RASMUSSEN, has B. HUSSEIN dropping like a rock in COLORADO…Now that is NEWS… NBC POLL has B. HUSSEIN winning by 70%, RASMUSSEN has B. HUSSEIN ahead by 2%… Quite a variation there, huh???

pueblo1032 on July 25, 2008 at 11:59 AM

He visited with troops in Afghanistan, he visited with troops in Kuwait, he visited with troops in Afghanistan, but OMG OMG he skipped a visit in Germany, he must hate the troops. He is surely not commander-in-chiefy.

sanjeevn on July 25, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Why doesn’t Hussein want to see his new private army for islam?

Is he still resentful because they have killed many of his brothers in arms?

SaintOlaf on July 25, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Who’s sorry now?
Whose heart is aching for making such a row?
Who’s sad and blue?
Who’s clocking you?
I cried at you too…

Right to the end
I tried to pretend
You wouldn’t go somehow
But you went your way,
Now Mc must pay
I’m sad and I’m sorry now…

I know. I won’t quit my day job!
