Phoning it in: Obama calls wounded troops at Landstuhl after skipping visit

Something’s better than nothing but the disappointment is palpable: “Everyone was excited about Obama’s visit. It’s a shame.” After googling around for details about what happened, precisely, I think John McCormack at the Standard has it right. It wasn’t the absence of media that led Obama to cancel the trip, it was the fact that two of his top military advisors, most notably Ret. Gen. Gration, couldn’t go with him because they’re technically campaign personnel and DoD regs prohibit political campaigning at military bases. Why Obama simply didn’t leave the two of them behind and make the trip anyway, your guess is as a good as mine.

On the media angle, see this exchange on the plane between one of the pool reporters and Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs:

Q: The schedule was for this plane, with us in it, to fly to Ramstein. By the way we were expected to pay for the flight, what were you suppose to do with the entourage then?

Gibbs: You would have stayed on the plane.

Q: We would have stayed on the plane, would there have been any pool report?

Gibbs: there may have been, I don’t know if we ever came to a decision on that.

So the press (possibly) wasn’t going to join them in the hospital. Contra the predictable conspiracy theorizing of some nutroots bloggers, who seized on the fact that the military didn’t inform them that this would be regarded as a political event until Wednesday night, Gibbs said he didn’t think the Pentagon had “set them up” and acknowledged that Team Obama has been aware of the political complications for awhile:

Q: When did you originally decide to go?

Gibbs: I have to get you an exact date but it has been on the schedule for a long time.

Q: Did it not occur to anybody that this might be viewed as a political stop?

Gibbs: We had taken some of that into consideration, but we believed that it could be done in a way that would not create, it would not be created or seen as a campaign stop.

As Geraghty notes, by Talking Points Memo’s own admission, the DoD regulations about campaigning are “longstanding.” Sounds like they didn’t give this nearly as much thought as they should have, and then when Gration allegedly tried and failed to pull rank and wrangle an eleventh-hour exception to the regs for himself, someone inside the campaign threw a tantrum and decided to call the whole thing off. What was it I was saying earlier today about the efficiency and professionalism of his organization? Gulp.

10 Things Obama would rather do than visit US troops:

1. Attend a blind-folded felching party at Rosie O’Donnell’s house.
2. Dress in a tu-tu and dance “Afternoon of the Faun” in downtown Tehran while eating a pint of rancid pork lard
3. Roll naked in a vat of ebola monkey sperm
4. Drill sheet metal screws through his testicles
5. Lick Antonin Scalia’s taint, live on the 700 Club
6. Visit Tuscaloosa, dressed as the sherrif from Blazing Saddles
7. Get fisted by Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant
8. Read a scratch-and-sniff Qur’an
9. Write the entire text of “Remembrance of Things Past” with his tongue on Courtney Love’s labia
10. Low crawl naked over 4 miles of broken glass just to sniff the tire of the truck that took away This code pink chick’s panties.

Team Obama just thought the rules wouldn’t apply to them.

What was it I was saying earlier today about the efficiency and professionalism of his organization? Gulp.

I swear! Really! Ever since Hillary was removed from this picture, it really has exposed just how infantile Obama’s campaign is.

Texas Gal on July 25, 2008 at 10:24 PM

Damn right they tried to have their ‘military advisers’ pull rank. The rules don’t apply to them. Unfortunately for them, the military wasn’t impressed with a retired general acting as a political hack. So they threw a temper tantrum.

GarandFan on July 25, 2008 at 10:24 PM

How much you wanna bet that Obama makes a phone call to a wounded warrior from Illiniois (if there are any at Landstuhl- if not, any will do) and gets massive press out of it? Entirely within his rights as a Senator, though.

You nailed it rotorhead!!

Baxter Greene on July 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM

He could have left behind Gration and visited wounded troops or cancel his visit so as not to offend the general’s ego.

So he canceled the visit and blew off the wounded men and women defending our country…in order to avoid offending the ego of his supporter.

amerpundit on July 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM

It’s just beyond ridiculous that he refused to go. Even if he would have gone by himself with no photographers or reporters, the word still would have gotten out and he still would have scored political points.

But he didn’t. So screw him.

I remember when Bush made that trip to Chile and the security people there tried to detain his secret service man and he just walked back and reached in the circle of men holding his guy and pulled him out. Then he straightened his suit jacket and walked on. When faced with something he did not count on, he acted. Obama on the other hand…..

Why Obama simply didn’t leave the two of them behind and make the trip anyway, your guess is as a good as mine.

Because he figured that having a retired general with him would stop the troops from telling him how they really felt about him.
Wouldn’t look good if someone took a phone pic of one of the guys flipping him off or recording a tongue lashing.

ArmyAunt on July 25, 2008 at 10:43 PM

Wounded troops in Landstuhl were wounded during the surge, otherwise they’d have been shipped stateside. Given his obstinate, bone-headed stance on the surge, could you imagine some impertinent wounded soldier posing a question to him like “don’t you think my wounds should count for something?”. Since he couldn’t bring his phalanx of question-screeners with him, it had disaster written all over it.

Ironically, not going produced the same effect.

He dodn’t go because he couldn’t get the press to go with him and get a photo-op…

He was “afraid” that the news media would say that it was more “fake” stories, like they did in Iraq..(with the DOD footage)

(The Media was not recording Obama shooting that basketball NOR did they interview him with the troops, that was ALL military photographers.. AKA “propaganda”)

Chakra Hammer on July 25, 2008 at 10:47 PM

“but we believed that it could be done in a way that would not create, it would not be created or seen as a campaign stop.”

This makes me want to vomit.

Note that Osama Obama got his photo taken — and some more press — by making the call to our wounded soldiers after not having the b*lls to show up among people who have made real sacrifices.

The man — and it gets harder to call him that daily — is scum. I’m amazed that even a Democrat would vote for him.

Ironically, if Barry had a clue about the military, he would know that they would NEVER publish a video of an embarrasing moment of his - they understand they report to civilian authority, and that to do anything to demean that authority is a career-terminating move. He is probably safer in the hands of any military PR type than in the hand of the rookie idealogues in his own campaign!

What I am saying is that the US military has a… code of ethics. And that code is usually applied without respect to the personal views of those in charge at the moment. As you can imagine, this concept is not easily grasped by the MSM or the Democrats!

Obama and his staff are not comfortable around the military, and when they found out their military adviser could not make the trip, it was like taking their security blanket away. As I said before, if Obama visited me in the hospital after getting wounded in combat, I’d roll over in my bed like the wounded Rangers did to Clinton in ‘93. Obama knows he’s not welcome anywhere near the military, especially in the halls of hospital caring for wounded Soldiers. This is not an official policy, obviously, but rather something that is just understood as a matter of principle. Obama speaks of his patriotism, which is wholly different than a Soldier who shows his patriotism and love for country. Obama neither understands nor respects the military because they have something he does not: a resume of courage, selflessness, and honor.
If he called, I’d hang up. As if through one phone call he could ever come to understand or appreciate what the military does.
Thank you, Mr. Obama for not going to Landstuhl. You and your subversive colleagues from the Congress can just stay away, thanks.

You can judge a man’s character by the way he treats people that he perceives to be less powerful than him or unnecessary to his agenda.

obladioblada on July 26, 2008 at 2:12 AM

“The best index to a man’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.” ~Abigail Van Buren
A. The military can’t do him any good, beyond the perception gained through photos taken with wounded Soldiers that he actually cares for them. When the photo-op opportunity left, so did his need for the military.
B. Soldiers are called to be apolitical, hence they can’t call him an egotistical coward to his face, though many would love to do so.

Senator Obama nixed the visit since he couldn’t bring his two generals to visit wounded troops from Illinois and to make up for this fracas he phoned them?! Is the senator afraid to meet the wounded troops without his two generals/military campaign staff? When will we hear retired General Gration’s side of the story? I’ve heard that the folks at Landstuhl went above and beyond to accommodate the Illinois senator by getting a military photographer to commemorate his visit.

eigafan on July 26, 2008 at 4:30 AM

simply an inartful oversight! this was not the event planner that Obama knew who is now under the bus and we have moved on to The Gorious Leader in France!

sabbott on July 26, 2008 at 7:24 AM

Obama’s campaign said he was going to see the wounded troops so that he could thank them.

Why would the fact that he couldn’t take along his “military advisors” make any difference? Does Obama have some sort of disability that prevents him from saying “thank you” to a soldier when he’s all by himself? Obama needs to have his military advisors there to hold his little sweaty hand as he says “thank you”?

Pathetic.

AZCoyote on July 26, 2008 at 7:43 AM

Obama’s greatest weakness isn’t his waffling. It’s his greatest strength. He can tell the left, the center, and the right whatever they want to hear-all in the same breath, and everyone is happy. No one questions it except the right because the left just want’s a D, and the center is too apathetic to care. The biggest whining about GWB has always been his swagger, his arrogance, and his ‘with us or against us’ appearance. The more Obama looks and sounds like he’s open or even backing every single idea…the more he appears counter to the 70%+ who dislike GWB. As long as he looks casual, calm, cool, collected, and open-minded (ie lacks resolve), people will love him.

Obamarx has priorities.
1. Self above all.
2. Citizen of the SOCIALIST World.
3. citizen of what he sees to be the mean and ugly states in America through no fault of his own as his sorry *ss may as well have been from Kenya.

Obamarx gives thanks.
1. To self above all.
2. To SOCIALIST World that welcomes their Weltkaiser.

Any questions? Tough. He’s already answered one. Take him or take him. Either way, he’ll leave you under the bus.

Someone with good sense would not spew a 30 minute odyssey of the mouth that counters the solid American ingenuity understood by Robert Frost: “Good fences make good neighbors.”

Hearing of Obamarx’s plans to destroy walls throughout the world, unable to manage their totalitarian’s message, the press beg McCain for an explanation of their Obaphenom.

“He could have left behind Gration and visited wounded troops or cancel his visit so as not to offend the general’s ego.”

At least we have an idea of which Obama feels is more important. And what does that say about the General?

Christ, shouldn’t Gration have told Obama to go?

Whose troops did he call?

Buzzy on July 26, 2008 at 9:36 AM

I remember when Bush made that trip to Chile and the security people there tried to detain his secret service man and he just walked back and reached in the circle of men holding his guy and pulled him out. Then he straightened his suit jacket and walked on. When faced with something he did not count on, he acted. Obama on the other hand…..

Urban, rural or military bovine feces, “Snopes” knocks it down…!

J_Gocht on July 26, 2008 at 9:57 AM

The man — and it gets harder to call him that daily — is scum. I’m amazed that even a Democrat would vote for him.

MrScribbler on July 25, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Sums it up pretty good… Dirty lil secret MrScribbler; many (I mean MANY) Democrats aren’t going to vote for the scum-master. Some are pissed off that Hillary got thrown off the cliff by her own party; some are pissed off that “black America” (delivered to us compliments of Rev. Wright) obviously has much bitterness (hatred) for white people; some just don’t like the guy because he is so radical; and the real kicker is that many Democrats are finding their American Pride and putting that in front of their love of being a Democrat, and will vote for McCain once in the privacy of the booth.

Obama is a radical leftist, borderline anti-American. It’s not just right leaning people seeing this folks. Mr. Soros and his gang of socialist leaning thugs have taken control of the Democrat Party, and Obama is his hand picked candidate. The ties Obama has to the many people who have openly attacked America, who have openly blamed America for anything and everything wrong with the world we live in today; this is a dynamic that even many Democrats are angry about. The Democrat Party is (and has been) led by people who answer to Mr. Soros, and these people are openly placing blame on America for slaughtering innocent civilians in the dead of night; torturing innocent civilians on a regular basis; destroying the planet with our self-serving way of life; creating diseases in order to wipe the planet of entire races of humans; on and on and on the blame game continues. The MSM is tanking (thankfully) because they signed on 100% to the “blame America” mind molding game, and the people are sick and tired of being brainwashed into thinking badly of our country, as well as being brainwashed into believing that our sons and daughters are murderous thugs, trained to kill civilians after they tortured them for fun.

These people don’t deserve the “time of day” in this great country. We’ve listened to their voices far too long now. The Dan Rathers & Katie Courics of the world need to be shunned into a dark corner. Mr. Soros deserves to be thrown off American soil, and every American who has ties to him should be investigated to the fullest extend of the law. Enough already; screw the political correctness of anything, let’s bring American pride back into the limelight.

I guess the statements made by Democrats such as Kerry, Murtha, Clark, Pelosi, Reid, et al, don’t matter; snopes clears that up for all of us.

Follow the money…

Keemo on July 26, 2008 at 10:19 AM

Interesting analysis, Keemo. I’ve heard many people predict the demise of the Republican Party because of its leftward drift. Your comments remind me of the possibility raised by others that the far-leftward drift of the Democrat Party could result in an internal rebellion within their ranks of people who will say, “Enough!”

What I’ve often heard is the far left controls most of the money in the Democrat Party, the moderates control most of the votes. We’ll see how it all plays out, but you may have given me a reason to be hopeful of some semblance of sanity returning to their ranks.

It’s not just right leaning people who have turned off network news, and have canceled their subscriptions to MSM news outlets; the rapid decline of the MSM is a result of Americans saying “enough of this”… Most of the older folks in my family (as well as my wifes family) are life long Democrats who will not be voting for Obama. Most of the younger folks in my family are proud Americans who don’t give Liberals the time of day; see them as kooks who “need to get a life.”

I believe the MSM will make the election of Obama their “last stand” for survival; if fact, they are so openly in the tank for Obama, they don’t even have a mask on anymore. On another note, most of the younger members of my family consider themselves Independents, and they have a definition of what it means to be an Independent that is new to me. Independent means voting for the person rather than voting for a party; there are good people out on both sides of the isle, trying their best to represent their constituents; these people are actually doing the job as designed. Seems a lil far fetched to me, as I don’t think young people are paying much attention to the voting records of these people, and contribute “pork” as representing their constituents. However, I do wish their line of thinking does eventually become popular.

Keemo, I don’t hear anyone but wingnuts and some goofballs in the military complaining about Barrack’s commitment and appreciation for our fine troopers.

“Snopes” knocked that drivel down!

J_Gocht on July 26, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Keemo, the independent thinking you described is the way things are supposed to work. I recently had a discussion with a man who was raised to believe you should never vote a straight ticket; the reason being that many people use party loyalty in the place of informed decisions. I told him that I have seldom voted anything other than a straight Republican ticket, and not because I didn’t pay attention to the other candidates but because I did. Birds of a feather tend to flock together, and politicians usually choose which party to join based on shared philosophy. I pay attention to what the Democrats are doing, but they seldom tell me anything I want to hear.

Down 16 cents here from last Friday to Tuesday and holding and we had a hurricane at our doorstep!

Thank you W for lifting that Ex order and to the Senators taking on Reid!

Ban me on this.

Obama is a punk assed affirmative action prick.
Missjustice take note: do some homework!

He never served a day for the USA and has expectations that affirmative action and his terrorist/ activist supporters pass off as community organizing.

He is a Chicago machine politico and is serving himself first. Bought and financed by folks that want to destroy America.

He is peddling a load of Marxist/Racist crap.
