My two quotes of the day:

John Stewart (paraphrasing): “Obama’s visiting Bethlehem to see the place where he was born”.

And: “Tomorrow his tour takes him to France. In a scene Lance would recognize, a throng of adoring fans awaits Senator Obama in Paris – and that’s just the American press.””

And the Child spake and the tribes of Nato immediately loosed the Caveats that had previously bound them.

Hah.

I’m not sure it’s the “Caveats” that are preventing the unleashing of the tribes.

More like too few bullets and tanks that won’t work and planes that can’t fly.

Entelechy on July 24, 2008 at 10:49 PM

Great stuff from the reliably great Gerard Baker. While we’re admiring the Lightworker, we should also not miss this from Der Speigel (Number 44 has Spoken):

Anyone who saw Barack Obama at Berlin’s Siegessäule on Thursday could recognize that this man will become the 44th president of the United States. He is more than ambitious — he wants to lay claim to become the president of the world.

It was a ton to absorb — and what a stupendous ride through world history: the story of his own family, the Berlin Airlift, terrorists, poorly secured nuclear material, the polar caps, World War II, America’s errors, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, freedom. It’s amazing one could even pack such a potpourri of issues into sentences and then succeed in squeezing them all into the space of a speech that lasted less than 30 minutes.

Does this sound like a parody, or what? I sure thought it was until I read some more and discovered that his guy is not kidding. Read on…

UPDATE: Obama Campaign Blames Pentagon for Troop Snub in Germany

After the McCain campaign issued a statement upbraiding Obama for snubbing the troops saying that it is never inappropriate to visit troops, Obama’s campaign issued a new statement blaming the Pentagon:

“We learned from the Pentagon last night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event. Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perveived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go,” Maj. I’m confused. Didn’t Barry say in his big speech (and in an interview with Brian Williams) that he was just there as a “citizen”? Didn’t his campaign tell us that he was in Europe on a fact-finding mission, and that he was not campaigning? And if Barry wanted to show his appreciation to the troops, then why not leave the cameras and reporters behind and make a private visit? He had time to make a non-campaign speech to a non-voting bunch of Germans, so surely he had time to spare for a private visit with the troops he admires so much.

I thought this paragraph about his father was b.s. too and needed to be fact checked:

At the height of the Cold War, my father decided, like so many others in the forgotten corners of the world, that his yearning - his dream - required the freedom and opportunity promised by the West. And so he wrote letter after letter to universities all across America until somebody, somewhere answered his prayer for a better life.

Somebody, somewhere? Barry won’t give credit to who that somebody was? Or he doesn’t know? But what about his prior speeches about the airlift, and J.F.K.?

Moreover, if he is going to use his father as a romantic symbol of the Cold War, then it’s fair to point out that his father was a full-blown Communist, no? I know that others have said this is irrelevant, but it seems to me that if he wants to use his father as some sort of dreamy symbol, it’s only fair that Americans the world be reminded of the truth of the matter.

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, “Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.”

And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals …

Now did the Lord say, “First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three.

Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three.

Five is right out.

Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.”

A bit of research at the library reveals the answers about Barack Obama’s father and his father’s convictions which Obama withholds from his readers. A first hint comes from authors E. S. Atieno Odhiambo and David William Cohen in their book The Risks of Knowledge (Ohio U. Press, 2004). On page 182 of their book they describe how Barack Obama’s father, a Harvard trained economist, attacked the economic proposals of pro-Western ‘third way” leader Tom Mboya from the socialist left, siding with communist-allied leader Oginga Odinga, in a paper Barack Obama’s father wrote for the East Africa Journal. As Odhiambo and Cohen write, “The debates [over economic policy] pitted .. Mboya against .. Oginga Odinga and radical economists Dharam Ghai and Barrack Obama, who critiqued the document for being neither African nor socialist enough.”

I have a copy of Barack Obama’s paper here in my hand, obtained from the stacks at UCLA (see the picture above). The paper is as describe by Odhiambo and Cohen, a cutting attack from the left on Tom Mboya’s historically important policy paper “African Socialism and Its Applicability to Planning in Kenya.” The author is given as “Barak H. Obama” and his paper is titled “Problems Facing Our Socialism”, published July, 1965 in the East African Journal, pp. 26-33. [UPDATE: I sent Politico a copy, and they've posted a PDF file of the paper here.]

And while Barry may very well not have known those details about his father until recently, surely he knows it now, so it seems to me it’s not wise to mention him, particularly in this lofty manner.

I watched Ronald Reagan “Talk Down This Wall” speech and then JFK’s speech for the first time today. They made me cry. Obama’s didn’t.

Sorry, I meant “Tear” not “Talk”.

It’s late.

One word. Excellent!

I did. Ok they were tears of shame and disgust at Obama, but tears nonetheless.

I cried today too, laughing my head off at the stupidity of humanity. It’s really tragic, though, and I should cry tears of sadness.

Imagine what a tiny, tiny level of confidence the Europeans have in themselves, if they depend on such vacuous words to make them feel in the slightest relevant.

If McCain depends on his vote in Portland, then he’s in more trouble than assumed. Oregon won’t matter for McCain.

I thought MB4 was in Oklahoma. Shows how I pay attention.

jaime, that’s where the hill might be - where he served, or went through training. Now he’s retired in Oregon, as he said several times, in the Portland area.

If only it were just the Europeans…

This is what Frank Luntz said tonight on Hannity & Colmes (after an insanely rapturous appraisal of Barry’s idiotic speech):

And you still have people who are challenging him; when you look inside the words, what do they really mean? Quite frankly, we don’t know the answer to that, but the words are powerful.

Yeah, I’m sure you’re right. Like I said, my ADD and all.
