Progress: Iran hints it’ll no longer cooperate with UN nuke investigation

That face-to-facer in Geneva’s really paying dividends, huh?
This calls for more diplomacy.
The [UN] investigation ran into trouble just months after being launched [last year]. Deadline after deadline was extended because of Iranian foot-dragging. The probe, originally meant to be completed late last year, spilled into the first months of 2008, and beyond…
Officials say that among the evidence given to the IAEA are what seem to be Iranian draft plans to refit missiles with nuclear warheads; explosives tests that could be used to develop a nuclear detonator, and a drawing showing how to mold uranium metal into the shape of warheads. There are also questions about links between Iran’s military and civilian nuclear facilities.
Today, [Iranian Vice President, Gholam Reza] Aghazadeh appeared to signal that his country was no longer prepared even to discuss the issue with the IAEA.
Investigating such allegations “is outside the domain of the agency,” he said after meeting with Mr. ElBaradei. Any further queries on the issue “will be dealt with in another way,” he said, without going into detail.
Diplomatic sources in the know confirm the probe is at “a dead end.” Thanks partly to the Iraq WMD fiasco, partly to the NIE that claimed Iran had suspended its weapons program, and partly to the fact that this charade has dragged on for so long that no one can follow it anymore, there’s a general public perception, I think, that the UN is on Iran’s side in all this and has largely vindicated them from the charge of trying to build a bomb. Ain’t so. Olli Heinonen, the IAEA’s chief investigator, is the one who made the case back in March that there’s more to the Iranian program than meets the eye. According to tonight’s AP story, in fact, it was Heinonen’s briefing that fueled Iranian “anger” to the point where they’re now toying with cutting the IAEA off, although British and Israeli sources were alleging months earlier that reports of the program’s demise were greatly exaggerated.
They have slightly more than a week left to respond to the west’s incentives offer before Rice goes back to the Security Council for more sanctions. Exit question: How much longer is Israel prepared to wait? Per Shmuel Rosner’s piece today in TNR, don’t think of it as a choice between military action or diplomacy. Think of it as military action and…
According to this line of thinking, which has adherents among some high-ranking officials and former officials in the Israeli defense establishment, focusing on the tactical questions surrounding such an operation–how much of Iran’s nuclear program can Israel destroy? how many years can a bombing campaign set the program back?–is a mistake. The main goal of a hit would not be to destroy the program completely, but rather to awaken the international community from its slumber and force it to finally engineer a solution to the crisis. As one former Israeli official put it, any attack on Iran’s reactors–as long as it is not perceived as a military failure–can serve as a means of “stirring the pot” of international geopolitics. Israel, in other words, wouldn’t be resorting to military action because it is convinced that diplomacy by the international community cannot stop Iran; it would be resorting to military action because only diplomacy by the international community can stop Iran.

and we would notice a difference?

Good! Maybe Bush will do something before he goes.
Greenhorn on July 24, 2008 at 9:21 PM
So much for the decline in the price of oil.
Sometimes I wonder if these guys are just shakedown artists trying to spook the markets and drive up the price of oil. But they are worse than that I fear and all of this reminds me of the run up to the Iraq war.
But then again, I am wondering if the Israelis will make that strike. I used to think it was a given that they would..but now I am not so sure. I am not sure they know where to strike for sure.
One thing is for sure, no one can say that Bush did not try. Well, people will say that, but obviously it is not true.
Terrye on July 24, 2008 at 9:23 PM
…so my point is, there’s no way to negotiate with him. Give him what he wants–let Israel send him to his 70 (male) virgins.
jgapinoy on July 24, 2008 at 9:25 PM
…so it’s better to attack him now, before he gets his nukes. If there’s no strike, it’s inevitable that he’ll get nukes.
jgapinoy on July 24, 2008 at 9:26 PM
Is that what is meant by agressive diplomacy?
Weight of Glory on July 24, 2008 at 9:32 PM
Israel should definitely not bomb Iran. That slippery regime has tentacles all over the world, and I doubt we want to poke the octopus in Tehran to see how they wiggle.
Seixon on July 24, 2008 at 9:33 PM
I saw a story about Iran having pics of fighter jets on their website, not real ones but fakes..models!
Apparently, an expert on this says the pics and he said the reason he knows is they show a missile on the American model that they dont have. It was pitiful actually…the great Iran faking their website to look more powerful than they are. Anyone else see it?

How about a little Obama appeasement to make the little Iranian dipshit come around… Because if Bambi is elected, appeasement is number one in the playbook. It’s going to be a long nauseating slog.
Travis1 on July 24, 2008 at 9:35 PM
Heh.
Well makes sense to me, Iran playing the global comm’ty for fools. Sure come in and look until we get to the point you can’t.

All too true. The ability of some people to put blame where it doesn’t belong never ceases to amaze me. When we went into Iraq in 2003, there was a cry from some people of “Why didn’t he try diplomacy?” I was thinking, “Where have you been for the last 12 years?” During a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians some years ago, the Palestinians repeatedly tried to provoke Israel but the Israelis held their fire. Finally they could tolerate the attacks no longer and retaliated. I thought then that should firmly establish who was the aggressor but the critics promptly blamed Israel anyway.
The Iranians exhausted my patience with them long ago, but those who believe in diplomacy and only diplomacy will never consider military action to be justified.
backwoods conservative on July 24, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Then those tentacles will just have to be cut. It’s interesting how you are so scared of Iran. Why do you think Iranians are not even remotely scared countries that could turn them to glass?

Surprise!
My money’s on Israel here – they have a track record of stopping imbeciles and power-hungry facists from getting too much technology put together.
I hope that their arsenal of F-15s, F-16s and PATRIOTs is enough to get the job done and keep everyone safe.

I’ve followed it. Iran was completely cooperative until they were illegally referred to the Security Council. After they were illegally referred to the SC, which is a breach of the NPT by the IAEA, Iran still cooperated with INFCIRC/153 inspections, but only discontinued INFCIRC/540 inspections, which they were not legally bound to anyway. It is only now when the US has resorted to the story that they “found” a laptop computer that contains all of Irans secrets (which all happened to have been written in English) that Iran has had enough of the BS and started to become uncooperative. There is only so much a nation can put up with. Iran has had enough of the idea that the US does not have to abide by any treaties but the rest of the world has to go far beyond the stipulations of those same treaties.
The only way to stop proliferation in the long term is to get all countries to sign the INFCIRC/540 protocol. After the insanely illegal actions of the US in the past 5 years with respect to the NPT, no additional nations will ever sign the additional protocol and subject themselves to the same treatment. Once again, what the US does to make us “safer” only makes the world more dangerous.

It’s odd how a country of 7 million has, evidently, been tasked with handling one of the greatest threats to the civilized world, after which the Euros will issue Hague war-crimes arrest warrants for every single Jewish Israeli and everyone who has ever said a good word about Israel. THen they will impose an embargo designed to destroy Israel.
This world is in a very bad place, and mostly because people in the West have refused to accept the ROE of reality. Tehran should have disappeared in 1979.
progressoverpeace on July 24, 2008 at 9:53 PM
So the UN will give Iran more time to “reconsider” their stand before getting really tough on them, and Osama Obama will sit in the White House weighing the “costs” of inviting Mad Mahmoud to dinner & talks….
Should be interesting. Radioactive, too.

Just propose to give all ethnic minorities the freedom to either associate with adjacent countries or create their own free states. Increase agitation of the breakup of the country from within based on the desire of people to be free from their tyrannical overlords and reduce Iran to a rump Persia with half the current coastline, a lot less oil, and half the population. That process itself would cause the downfall of the Mullahs many of which would probably get a Ceausescu-like send off.
If that doesn’t solve the nuke problem, then we can bomb their installations.

The 12th iman hid in a well when he was a kid and vanished.
Does anybody know if Obama ever fell down a well when he was a kid?

Obama said he would use really big sticks and really big carrots to deal with Iran.
I say the world pulls out the biggest carrot of all: kowtow to these savages, convert to Islam, kill all the Jews and start locking up the women.
It’s a small price to pay for world peace.

Anyhow,Tony I’m really worried about this oil

well,and you know,what if the 12th Iman,gets
lucky, and who would really know that right,
I mean,the 12th Iman gets released from a
drilling well!
It would be like a horror picture, happy go
lucky drill guys score a well, party after,
then the mist comes out of the well, then
you know,it would be catostrophic beyond
even words could convey!
Besides that my idea is totally insane, but

That never is the choice. Military action is merely diplomacy by other means.
