Competing optics: Cheering Germans or American military? Update: Snubbing wounded soldiers? Update: Touring Berlin instead? Update: It is/is not a campaign event?

posted at 10:50 am on July 24, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

I guess this is a question of priorities.  Barack Obama apparently ran short on time in his visit to Germany today, and travelers know how schedules can slip during long tours, even without all of the events Obama had planned.  Those circumstances force people to prioritize their time, and eliminate less-useful stops.

So what did Obama cut today?  Der Spiegel’s blog reports on Obama’s priorities:

++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++

1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

On the other hand, the campaign apparently has no problem in keeping this event on its schedule:

The message here is that thousands of screaming German fans at the Tiergarten take precedence over visiting Americans serving their country at Ramstein and Landstuhl.  Maybe one of the networks following Obama could interview a few of the soldiers about how they perceive that set of priorities from Obama.

Der Spiegel also notes that the French seem diffident about Obama’s visit to Paris, with none of the enthusiasm of the neighbors to the east:

++ Paris Left Cold by Obama Visit ++

3:30 p.m.: While Obama’s Berlin visit has caused a stir, hardly anyone is interested in his trip to Paris on Friday. There are hardly any French media reports on the eve of his visit. There is merely some grumbling about the extensive itinerary for his trip to Berlin. “A speech in Berlin, five little hours in Paris,” writes French daily Le Monde.

Heck, why didn’t Obama skip Paris?  He could have still worked in a visit to the American bases in Germany.  Apparently, even diffident French get priority over American military personnel.

Update: A number of Hot Air readers reminded me that Landstuhl’s mission includes treating the wounded from the war:

The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) is an overseas military hospital operated by the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense. LRMC is the largest military hospital outside of the continental US. It is located near Landstuhl, Germany, and serves as the nearest treatment center for wounded soldiers coming from Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, it serves military personnel stationed in Germany as well as their family members.

A large proportion of serious casualties from the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters are treated here, flown in via the Ramstein Air Base.

So Obama’s priorities look even more askew than first thought.

Update II: Well, this gets better.  According to Jake Tapper, the problem wasn’t scheduling at all:

Obama noted that in a break from his whirlwind schedule, “we’ve got some down time tonight. What are you guys gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? …I’ve never been to Berlin, so…I would love to tour around a little bit.”

Obama canceled a previously-planned stop to visit thousands of American service personnel, including troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan being treated at Landstuhl, so he could hold a political rally for Germans and go shopping in Berlin. Now that’s a nice set of priorities for a man who wants to become Commander in Chief.

Update III: The spin on this has gotten so bad that T. Boone Pickens might want Team Obama in his new wind farm.  First, from Jake Tapper, the O-Team says a visit to Landstuhl would have been “inappropriate” for a campaign trip:

“During his trip as part of the CODEL to Afghanistan and Iraq, Senator Obama visited the combat support hospital in the Green Zone in Baghdad and had a number of other visits with the troops. For the second part of his trip, the senator wanted to visit the men and women at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to express his gratitude for their service and sacrifice. The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

And CBS gets the opposite story:

“Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen – a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world,” Obama said precluding the buzz that his speech today is a campaign rally.

So which is it? A campaign event or not a campaign event?

Obama is a self-important idiot, but you’re being too hard on him. He shouldn’t be required to visit military facilities at all costs on any and all campaign stops, particularly one in Europe where his purpose is manifestly to address Europeans–that’s why he is in Europe.

In a campaign where message is a problem for the right, I would prefer to see us focus on real and concrete–not contrived–issues with Obama. This sort of thing comes off as petty moralizing, arguing about what someone SHOULD have done in your opinion, etc.

So, Obama couldn’t stop by and see the troops as a grateful fellow American citizen, just to thank them for their service and see how they’re doing? Without the entourage, without the press, just some time spent with the men and women who ensure our freedom? Everything doesn’t have to be a campaign event, Barry. OK, since you didn’t rattle of a list of things I didn’t say and then argue with me as though I said them, I will respond again. :-)

President Bush is President of the United States, and as such of course he has visited wounded troops, etc etc. This is still a bit of a non sequitur, though… Obama is not President, he just returned from a war zone where he visited troops at war, and you didn’t address the question of whether Bush has ALWAYS visited local military bases. If Obama were President for 8 years, we undoubtedly could point back to many, many, many times when he too had visited various bases or wounded troops.

I’m not trying to make the case that Obama would be as troop-friendly as Bush (I certainly don’t think that), but, rather, that your point involves a lot of jumping to conclusions.

Absolutely stunning. A major party candidate to be President of the United States just spoke to a crowd of over 100,000 on foreign soil and tried to apologize for America. Barack Obama just couldn’t bring himself to make an unqualified defense of America without criticizing the country for not having always lived up to its ideals. In order to curry favor with Europeans, he went after America for not being as tough on businesses in the fight against global warming as Germany, and in neutral terms said that the two superpowers came “too close, too often” to starting a nuclear war — as if America and the Soviets were equal threats to world peace. A friend of mine emailed during the speech to say “I feel sick.” I’m sure he isn’t the only American who feels that way this afternoon.

He never touted that he was going overseas to have a rally, but to investigate the military and “uncover” truths…in analysis, it may end up being a negative.

“Heck, why didn’t Obama skip Paris?”

He wanted to stop by and say “merci beaucoup”.

“Americans are ignorant. They must learn Spanish. They go to Germany and all they know is “Guten Tag”” ~ ~ Barack Obama

The lyrics are from “Reamonn”, one of the bands that played at the Obama concert.

Johan Klaus on July 24, 2008 at 5:20 PM

I missed his “donkey shun” at the end. Did you catch it? ;-)

baldilocks on July 24, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Sorry baldi, I didn’t watch the entire thing – I’m working. You and I need to get together this year. I was in your neck of the woods, so to speak, in the last two weeks. I read that the area has many Obama stickers on the cars, but I don’t see many. Do you?

Entelechy on July 24, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Johan, that gave me a headache :)

99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man fuer UFOs aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
Eine Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn es so war
Dabei war da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons

Victor Davis Hanson wrote totay of Obama’s speech:

He started, as in now usual, almost immediately by mentioning his race (“I know that I don’t look like the Americans who’ve previously spoken in this great city.”)

Obsessed with race, obsessed with himself.

Do not want

To be certain, the one thing that Obama’s international tour is NOT, it is NOT uplifting for our injured troops.

maverick muse on July 24, 2008 at 6:32 PM

What a selfish little prick. It would not kill him to meet a couple of soldiers and shake their hands. Show some respect.

Terrye on July 24, 2008 at 6:34 PM

It’s an entirely new take and 3rd significance given to Deutschland uber alles. THEY determine our president via their psychic will to dominate utopia/the world. And to hell with anyone to the contrary.

maverick muse on July 24, 2008 at 6:37 PM

But did he speak in German?

Seixon on July 24, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Sorry baldi, I didn’t watch the entire thing – I’m working.

You didn’t miss his “donkey shun” because I’m joking. :-) Besides, he only speaks one language.

You and I need to get together this year. I was in your neck of the woods, so to speak, in the last two weeks.

Email me!

I read that the area has many Obama stickers on the cars, but I don’t see many. Do you?

I’ve seen a few. T-shirts, too. Not as many yard signs as one might imagine, however.

Well, isn’t this special,Obama strutten around Germany as
if he is already zee Commander-in -Chief,President of the
United States of America, and a cancelled trip to Rammstein’s
US Airforce Military Base!

Really, but I thought Obama was just in Iraq, and according to
Hopey and Changey,he claims he has the support of nearly the
entire Military population stationed in Iraq!

So,again,Obama comes up with a tight schedule, but he chooses
to snub the very Military he claims will support him, nice!
(NOT).

I posted a few weeks back,on Barack’s trip to Germany,and he
wanted to talk,or have an open venue,er,like a rally held by
a certain madman who knew how to manipulate and mezmerize
the masses,as in the famed evening in Germany when they used
about 134 huge searchlight pointing skyward,or to heaven if
you like,as one participant said,”It was like a religious experience”!

There’s no question,Obama’s whirlwind tour,is nothing short
of a Grand Illusion Tour,a “All the World is a Stage”!

Obama,is nothing but an apparition created by his political
handlers,he has no future vision,he has so many positions,
that one has to engage in mental gymnastics just to keep up!

And for Obama to be in Germany,a day after Israel, while Iran
stalls for the bomb,is no different than British Prime Mini-ster Neville Chamberlain, standing in front of the crowds,
promising peace, when its de javu all over again,1939 and
Iran is threatening Israel, while the world again is mesmer-
ized!

Obama,is extremely dangerous, but to those under his spell,
they cannot see the light, and again, history will repeat it-
self!—————————————————- :)

There seems to be something wrong with the Obama is Christ thread, so I’ll post this here. I can’t believe I missed this doozie in the Messiah’s speech:

This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands.

I mourn for the fact that Barry our savior was in Berlin when Hurricane Dolly hit Texas. I weep at the fact that a terrible storm hit New Hampshire today, but Barry was not here to save us. I despair at the thought that the ocean’s may rise off the coast of Maine tonight where there are thunderstorms and tornado warnings.

All is lost until Barry comes home to America. Come Home Barack! Please! Hurry!

I’m speechless at the audacity. I not only want him to lose big in November, I would love nothing more than to see him be a one term wonder from Chitown. This clown has nothing…….NOTHING.

Wethal on July 24, 2008 at 2:38 PM–That guy mirrored exactly what happened during a Pres.Clinton visit while we were stationed at Tyndall AFB. Place was a ghost town.

I sure hope this history doesn’t repeat itself….
