Competing optics: Cheering Germans or American military? Update: Snubbing wounded soldiers? Update: Touring Berlin instead? Update: It is/is not a campaign event?

I guess this is a question of priorities. Barack Obama apparently ran short on time in his visit to Germany today, and travelers know how schedules can slip during long tours, even without all of the events Obama had planned. Those circumstances force people to prioritize their time, and eliminate less-useful stops.
So what did Obama cut today? Der Spiegel’s blog reports on Obama’s priorities:
++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++
1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.
On the other hand, the campaign apparently has no problem in keeping this event on its schedule:
The message here is that thousands of screaming German fans at the Tiergarten take precedence over visiting Americans serving their country at Ramstein and Landstuhl. Maybe one of the networks following Obama could interview a few of the soldiers about how they perceive that set of priorities from Obama.
Der Spiegel also notes that the French seem diffident about Obama’s visit to Paris, with none of the enthusiasm of the neighbors to the east:
++ Paris Left Cold by Obama Visit ++
3:30 p.m.: While Obama’s Berlin visit has caused a stir, hardly anyone is interested in his trip to Paris on Friday. There are hardly any French media reports on the eve of his visit. There is merely some grumbling about the extensive itinerary for his trip to Berlin. “A speech in Berlin, five little hours in Paris,” writes French daily Le Monde.
Heck, why didn’t Obama skip Paris? He could have still worked in a visit to the American bases in Germany. Apparently, even diffident French get priority over American military personnel.
Update: A number of Hot Air readers reminded me that Landstuhl’s mission includes treating the wounded from the war:
The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) is an overseas military hospital operated by the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense. LRMC is the largest military hospital outside of the continental US. It is located near Landstuhl, Germany, and serves as the nearest treatment center for wounded soldiers coming from Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, it serves military personnel stationed in Germany as well as their family members.
A large proportion of serious casualties from the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters are treated here, flown in via the Ramstein Air Base.
So Obama’s priorities look even more askew than first thought.
Update II: Well, this gets better. According to Jake Tapper, the problem wasn’t scheduling at all:
Obama noted that in a break from his whirlwind schedule, “we’ve got some down time tonight. What are you guys gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? …I’ve never been to Berlin, so…I would love to tour around a little bit.”
Obama canceled a previously-planned stop to visit thousands of American service personnel, including troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan being treated at Landstuhl, so he could hold a political rally for Germans and go shopping in Berlin. Now that’s a nice set of priorities for a man who wants to become Commander in Chief.
Update III: The spin on this has gotten so bad that T. Boone Pickens might want Team Obama in his new wind farm. First, from Jake Tapper, the O-Team says a visit to Landstuhl would have been “inappropriate” for a campaign trip:
“During his trip as part of the CODEL to Afghanistan and Iraq, Senator Obama visited the combat support hospital in the Green Zone in Baghdad and had a number of other visits with the troops. For the second part of his trip, the senator wanted to visit the men and women at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to express his gratitude for their service and sacrifice. The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”
And CBS gets the opposite story:
“Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen – a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world,” Obama said precluding the buzz that his speech today is a campaign rally.
So which is it? A campaign event or not a campaign event?

Would have been a HUUUGE mistake for him to visit Ramstein. Plays right into McCain’s point that the U.S. still has a military presence in Germany 60 years after WWII, and so we will in Iraq as well. I’m actually slightly impressed that the usually stupid Obama campaign had enough sense not to do this.

He found a whole country more arrogant them him…they don’t have time for wasteful idiots.
right2bright on July 24, 2008 at 11:01 AM
I don’t think Obama cares or needs to care about military personnel. The kind of person that would vote for Obama only needs lip service about how he “supports the troops.” Anything more would alienate his base and be too much of an uncomfortable reminder that we’re at war to his supporters in the squishy middle. The America that will elect Obama considers the military equivalent to attack dogs on chains in the back yard: to be ignored until needed, then promptly ignored again.
spmat on July 24, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Not a bad take…however, I think once he gets back, and some analysis of how few moments he spent with the troops, this will come back to haunt him.
He may have met with the brass, but he spent little if any time with the troops…that will show he has no real interest or knowledge in being the Commander of Chief.
right2bright on July 24, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Maybe the French have figured out that Obama is an empty suit. Last year, they turned away a beautiful empty pantsuit named Segolene Royal in favor of conservative policy wonk Sarkozy, of short stature and keen mind, who has probably seen right through Obama.
“Merci beaucoup”, indeed. De rien, mon cher perdant. (it’s nothing, my dear loser!)

Maybe you don’t know this; but German’s can’t vote, U.S. military men and women can vote. So a campaign rally for German’s over American’s is a little silly.
If (IF) you were in the military you would know that the “Commander of Chief” often visits his men that he commands, and that the men respect that.

I guess Obama plans on bringing Germany into the American imperial fold; who knew the guy had designs on world domination?
You aren’t President yet (and I pray you never will be) Obama, so right now you are simply accepting foreign praise as a U.S. senator. Regardless of your intent, you might as well prepare your lawyers to find ways to disallow ballots from our overseas military.

There’s more commies in Germany than there are in France.
Or how about this? Obama has an affinity for 10,000 Hessians supporting tyranny than one Marquis supporting freedom.
No doubt the Obama campaign plan to win over the diffident French by having Barack do a few Jerry Lewis impersonations. Now that would be ‘all net’.

How could he ignore such heroes? Oh yeah. I forgot, he’s not campaigning in Germany, but he wants to address the German people ‘as a senator’ on his ‘fact-finding trip.’
scottm on July 24, 2008 at 11:20 AM
The Ramstein and landstuhl area is the largest concentration of American citizens outside the U.S. (or it was a few years back, I assume it still is) and Landstuhl has a large hospital for treating and staging wounded service men/women.
This is a significant faux pas and McCain would be well served if he pointed this out. “O’Bama would rather speak to Germans than wounded American voters” Or something like that.

American soldiers aren’t a good crowd for Obama, who depends entirely on uncritical adulation.

Obama’s pandering to foreign countries may well turn off voters at home who rightfully don’t care who other countries want to be President of the United States. Brilliant, no wonder the latest polls show Obama losing ground in some key states.

I would “assume” that you mean can’t vote in American elections. I seem to recall having heard that somewhere. Mexicans, now that’s another matter, but of course as Juan says, they are God’s children too.
If they are overseas, particularly Iraq or Afghanistan, they may be able to vote but their votes are often not counted.
Not when one is in Germany.
And it is kind of hard to view it as putting Germans “over” Americans.
Some of you people have gotten so damn silly and so pavlovian and so lacking in gravitas when it comes to Obama that I am embarrassed for you.

Which are, of course, both available in Germany. Your point is lame anyway, because he’s running for POTUS, not POTWorld. His priority should be to see about American interests abroad, what needs doing abroad to protect those interests etc.

I’ve spent the last few months working in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Those of you familiar with the area know that both Landstuhl and Ramstein are part of the larger Kaiserslautern Military Community, referred to by most simply as “K-Town”. Over 50,000 Americans call this community home, the vast majority of which are active duty military personnel. There are more than enough Americans in the area to populate a campaign rally… the odds that they’d support Obama (or support him openly)? Pretty slim.
He didn’t just snub those two installations, in effect, he snubbed… “Army facilities at Kleber, Panzer, and Daener Kaserne, Vogelweh, Landstuhl, Miesau, Pirmasens, Rhine Ordnance and Pulaski Barracks along with Air Force facilities located at Ramstein Air Base, Einsiedlerhof, Sembach and Kapaun Air Station.
Several U.S. Army Europe, or USAREUR, installations are scattered throughout the KMC. The Army installations stretch from the east side of Kaiserslautern, west to Miesau and south to Pirmasens. There are eight different Army installations comprising the KMC: Kleber Kaserne (Northeastern Kaiserslautern) Daener Kaserne (Northeastern Kaiserslautern) Panzer Kaserne (Northeastern Kaiserslautern) Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (Landstuhl) Rhine Ordnance Barracks (Western Kaiserslautern) Pulaski Barracks (Western Kaiserslautern) United States Materiel Command Center Europe/226th Med Bn (remote site at Pirmasens) Vogelweh (Western Kaiserslautern).”

But we are stuck with the same old problem. How many Americans read Der Spiegel? How many news agencies here in America will report on this slight of our service members? The best you can hope for is that Brit will give it a mention in his Grapevine section and that is about all.
The majority of Americans will go on blissfully ignorant of this or any of the other numerous gaffes or protests like the ones in Israel.
If some conservative groups don’t make their own commercials and find the funding to broadcast them into the living rooms across this nation this will also go into the formerly referred to as blackhole of news coverage.
