Video: The obligatory WNBA “brawl” clip

Via Debbie Schlussel, the confrontation mirrors the style of play: Sound on fundamentals but lacking that all-important “whoa!” moment. Presumably this is what brawls looked like in men’s basketball in the 1950s.
Coming soon to the Factor: O’Reilly rues the shameful prevalence of violence in sports while running this clip over and over and over…

They can’t play and they cant fight either..
BORING..
(However, I have seen some girl fights in Mixed Martial Arts and those were really good.. girls basketball to me sucks, period.. )
Chakra Hammer on July 23, 2008 at 1:33 PM
So AP, what in your opinion would have been the fighting move equivalent to a dunk, that would have legitimized this “fight”?
Weight of Glory on July 23, 2008 at 1:35 PM
Taking pot shots at O’reilly out of the blue. Keith is that you ?
redrock on July 23, 2008 at 1:35 PM
(Basically i just don’t like basketball, guys or girls.. ehhh… but the girls are really lame.. like watching College basketball.. boring.. Zzzzz)

The new standard of conservatism: No pot shots at O’Reilly out of the blue.

Basketball? They still play that?

Why no shots at Bill O? He’s about as arrogant as the other BO, only he’s right some of the time.

What does that have to do with Conservatism, it was just weird.

I don’t see any problem decrying violence in sports and playing this clip over and over again. It’s the violence on TV spiel, playing this over and over again, that would be a problem.
progressoverpeace on July 23, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Cat fight!
Not so…I’ve been to a few UCONN women’s games, and believe me, those girls can play!
JetBoy on July 23, 2008 at 1:45 PM
I suppose soccer will be blamed for this too given the hooliganism.
danarchy on July 23, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Naw. They didn’t use nearly as many trite cliches.
whitetop on July 23, 2008 at 1:48 PM
absolutely right. Women can’t play basketball. One time early on someone called me and asked me what slogan would be good for the WNBA to use. I said it then and I’ll say it again. . . it should be ’sorry we can’t dunk’.
I love basketball, but you won’t be able to pay me to watch WNBA or women’s basketball.
This was a fight without punches. . . lame.

50% of TV news is faux outrage.
I am shocked that players would have a scuffle in the middle of a big game. Just shocked.
faraway on July 23, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Sweet! This will give the tens or maybe hundreds of WNBA fans something to talk about.
Spirit of 1776 on July 23, 2008 at 1:52 PM
That fight reminds me of girls trying to throw a baseball overhand, but god bless ‘em, they’re trying best they can.

Me, I’d rather participate in a game than sit around & watch a bunch of overpaid steroid-pumped people in funny clothes play. But if you’d rather just watch, why not watch the best? Women are too short & too weak for basketball.
jgapinoy on July 23, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Really? Is it cuz most all the players were white?
Andy in Agoura Hills on July 23, 2008 at 2:20 PM
You know, between this fight and the 2005 knock-down drag-out battle between the Pacers and Pistons, both Detroit pro teams really should move their games from the Palace at Auburn Hills to the far more appropriate Joe Louis Arena downtown.

I guarantee you that they still lose money. The only thing that makes them partly successful is the lesbian community which has been posted in an earlier comment.
This is hype. Why is the rest of the world catching up to American basketball? Because we don’t care about the game anymore. . . we only care about hype. It is succeeding because a lot of major contributors are losing a lot of money marketing and promoting the WNBA. It’s not good basketball.
ThackerAgency on July 23, 2008 at 2:34 PM
Hey, I love watching the WNBA! I stopped watching the NBA years ago because it stopped being basketball. These women are truly talented and play a very pure game. They aren’t loaded with punks, hoods and gangsters (despite this brawl) and they don’t make a great deal of money here in the states.
I started watching because I became a Lindsay Whalen fan when she was playing here at Minnesota. She is now the star with the Connecticut Sun.
sabbott on July 23, 2008 at 2:35 PM
WNBA ?
Is that womens basketball?
Pro?
They get paid?
Who, other than the parents of said players, goes to see and PAY to watch these games? Future WNBA players, prolly….
.
Never ever will I watch again. I wasted 15 minutes of my life a few years ago watching a wnba game, rain /hail /tornado /and my tv was stuck on espn 3 was the only reason I saw that much.
Boring can’t begin to describe it.
There are many womens sports I will watch;
Diving
Track
Gymnastics
Golf
a few others….
.
but not W-basketball…ever.

I was dragged to a womens college basketball game, free tickets, knew the athletic director, a few years back. Was given adequate warning about the (lack of) skill level. When asked at the end of the game what I thought and I said I would not have paid to watch that if they had been playing naked.

Nothing says “brawl” quite like the arms-glued-to-your-sides walk-into-somebody-until-they-fall-over move.
Honestly, can you call it a brawl if there isn’t a single punch thrown? Maybe you can call this an “aggressive meeting” or an “unpolite rendezvous,” perhaps.

Two opposing players got their legs tangled up and one fell over the other. There was a ten-second scuffle, after which one hotheaded woman in a white jersey is held back by two of her teammates. Looks like a non-story.

The WBNA is a fan friendly league. The Maloofs here in Sacramento do a good job with the Monarchs (World Champs a few years ago). And the way that Kings ticket prices have gone up in the past several years, no more season tickets for me, just a few games a year – I could get WNBA season tickets for a what few Kings games would set me back.
But being the father of two girls (7 & 3) the WNBA is my fallback retirement position – the first two being the LPGA and Womens’ Tennis – that way I can spend recklessly now, and let the kids fund my golden years! Oh wait, I am not the government…

They fight like girls though. Oh, wait.

This incident aside, women’s basketball is like men’s basketball in the 1950s in one other respect, in that it is still a team sport, as opposed to hangers-on following an overpriced prima donna. That alone makes for a more interesting game, if a TEAM play is what you’re looking for.
Other than that, I can only say… meow!
