Video: Obama re-writes history of “without preconditions” again

posted at 1:54 pm on July 23, 2008 by Allahpundit

Geraghty has the transcript but the clip is short enough that it’s worth watching. The McCain camp and the RNC are pushing this incredibly hard today but I’m not sure why. Yes, it’s true that Obama never qualified his statement at the debate last year by saying he’d demand “preparations” before meeting personally with the enemy, as he suggests here. But (a) we already know he’s willing to lie about this, (b) the public doesn’t seem to care, and (c) considering that Team Bush recently dropped its own preconditions on meeting with Iran, is this really an issue Maverick wants to force? It’s like the “time horizon”/timetable trap all over again.

Keep your eye on the wires, though, because I’m mighty curious to see if the Israeli press can squeeze an answer out of Obama on a related subject. Where’s the red line on negotiations? Is there one?

Republicans can win this thing if they only hammer 2 issues:

1-Oil Drilling. Make the whole D party culpable in the ‘no drilling’ side of the equation. Their generic ballot numbers are falling slightly because of this already. Push it. Highlight democrat 50 cent gas taxes, etc. It’s not difficult. The ads write themselves.

2-Obama wouldn’t have supported the surge even knowing it would have been successful. McCain needs to highlight this every time he gets a chance. Obama wanted defeat for political reasons. Party first. Country second.

RNC could really pull this thing out of the crapper if they did this. But they won’t. And they’ll lose.

If I think I can get a deal that will advance our cause…

What exactly is “our cause”, Mr. Obama? Do you have such a thing in your repertoir, or is it another amorphous thing, like your “positions”???

He will deny any “flipflops” and if/when confronted with prior statements, will simply dismiss them as a “distraction.”

“Let me say this, about that. It’s possible that meetings should be held, without pre-conditions. It’s possible, however, that meetings should be held with pre-conditions. It’s, also, possible that meetings with pre-conditions should be conditioned upon the conditional pre-conditions having been conditionally met, by Iran. I’ve discussed this matter with Michelle; and she’s assured me that such a ‘just plain mean’ country as America should not judge any other country. So, there might be pre-conditions, or there might not be.

This is what I mean by “change.” It is my prerogative.”

- Barack Obama.

In pursuit of what? Or are the preconditions pursuing Obama?

Guys, stop distracting the American public from the awesomeness of the Obama. Bringing up issues like inconsistent positions on foreign policy is not going to benefit anyonbody’s kids – not to mention that these types of politics are typical of Washington.

Oops! Wrong thread.

jgapinoy on July 23, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Dangit, McCain! Get OFF the topic of Iraq already! It’s the economy, stupid!!! Oil, drilling, gas prices, energy. Stop letting Obama and the MSM set the agenda and determine the public debate! This is the PERFECT opportunity to show that you understand what’s really important right now to the American people, and it sure ain’t what the French and Germans think of the junior senator from Illinois! While Obama’s flittering uselessly around the world sucking up to foreigners, you, McCain, can seize the lead in the public debate by simply talking about what the voters really want to talk about — gas prices!!! This is so freaking frustrating!

aero on July 23, 2008 at 2:16 PM

(c) considering that Team Bush recently dropped its own preconditions on meeting with Iran, is this really an issue Maverick wants to force?

Does McCain equal Bush?

Are you going on the assumption that the leftist talking point about McBush is, in fact, correct?

Or is this simply (R) in the WH stupidity hurts McCain when he points out potential (D) in the WH stupidity?

Obama’s answers in Israel regarding the Palestinian issue already showed a remarkable lack of clarity & understanding.

He tied progress in stopping Iran’s march to weapons, to progress in solving the Palestinian issue, buttressing it by saying that that is why from day one he would make the Palestinians a priority, further tossing in the lack of hope felt in palestinian areas to global problems, the old canard of terrorism caused by a lack of Obama messiahmania..

I’ve heard this argument before, in 2004, 2005, 2006 regarding Iraq, it was a central theme of the now proven to be total crap Iraq Study Group proposals, which suggested that without capitulation to the Palestinians and pressure on israel, no progress in Iraq was possible, the path to Iraq led through Jerusalem is what they said.

Yet, nothing has materialized with the Palestinians, in fact the situation vis a vis Hamas has worsened, yet Iraq has had a marvelous turn about. Basically Obama has taken this canard then, and applied it now to us AGAIN in Israel. Now progress with Iran leads through the Palestinian territories, meaning we should concede in Israel..

Well I would answer Obama good luck with that, stop dropping these problems on us, stop blaming the savages in Islam on us, and if that is your strategy get ready for a BIG war in Iran Mr. Commander in Chief.

The problem with trying to hammer away on this issue is that the American people are really really really tired of this war! Almost all of us except the lunatic fringe (and the democrats) support our wonderful military but we don’t support nation building and we have had enough! Having McAmnesty make this war his central theme will be a loser for him!

If he would stick to drilling for oil, building nuclear power plants and bringing down wasteful government he might stand a chance…but he won’t…

lorien1973 on July 23, 2008 at 1:59 PM

McCain: I’ve said that for a long time. But, you see, Sen. Obama doesn’t understand it’s not just troops. It’s an overall strategy. The kind that we employed in Iraq, which he said couldn’t succeed, and wouldn’t succeed, and still doesn’t acknowledge as having succeeded incredibly.

With Katie Curic

And he is taking a helicopter out to an oil platform and doing a presser there.

Gilda on July 23, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Where’s the red line on negotiations? Is there one?

More importantly, since he says “If I think I can get a deal that is going to advance our cause…” whose cause is “our” cause? Is it America’s cause? The UN’s cause? Europe’s cause? The Arabs’ cause? Israel’s cause? The Palestinians’ cause? (Yeah, I know McCain can’t go there, because he’d be questioning the Patriotissssm!)

As far as the “preconditions” bit goes, it’s more effective as example of yet another Orwellian twist of language in the Obama-speak maze of illogically logical saying of whatever-it-is-you-want-to hear. In other words, nothing.

Nichevo on July 23, 2008 at 2:47 PM

I made a comment that isn’t showing up.
Anyway, here is why Obama said he wants to meet with leaders like Ahmadenijad. It is all about being equal with the rest of the world, a sentiment he has expressed time and time again.
From the Texas debate in February.

OBAMA: I think, as I said before, preparation is actually absolutely critical in any meeting. And I think it is absolutely true that either of us would step back from some of the Bush unilateralism that’s caused so much damage.

But I do think it is important precisely because the Bush administration has done so much damage to American foreign relations that the president take a more active role in diplomacy than might have been true 20 or 30 years ago.

Because the problem is, if we think that meeting with the president is a privilege that has to be earned, I think that reinforces the sense that we stand above the rest of the world at this point in time. And I think that it’s important for us in undoing the damage that has been done over the last seven years, for the president to be willing to take that extra step.

OBAMA: That is the kind of step that I would like to take as president of the United States.

Get over it, it doesn’t matter, interesting to post and write about, but it won’t matter.
Energy, better just hit him on energy, and watch the gaffs pile up.
