Does this kill the Obama birth certificate myth?

posted at 5:45 pm on July 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Dave Weigel at Reason doesn’t think that a key piece of information discovered by a pro-Clinton documentarian will kill the cottage industry of Barack Obama birth certificate truthers, but it will convince everyone else that this rumor has wasted far too much time already.  Lori Starfelt, a member of the PUMA movement in the Democratic Party opposed to Obama’s nomination, nevertheless found a birth announcement in an August 1961 edition of the Honolulu Advertiser — and guess who the paper congratulates for their new addition?

Hey, he's really Hawaiian!

Unfortunately, as Weigel discovers at the site that found this, it doesn’t stop the madness:

Well, that’s it. Game over: Obama was born in the States. Or… [cue Bernard Hermann sting] was he? This image actually comes from Obama conspiracist TexasDarlin, who appends it with 12 questions. Such as…

Although this announcement suggests his parents were married, that’s still an open question.

Have you noticed that there are no photos of Obama as an infant?

Barack Obama’s original birth certificate likely contains something that embarrasses him, or something that could be problematic for him legally, such as an indication of dual nationality. I STILL think he needs to produce a hard copy of the original Birth Certificate, or he looks like he’s hiding something.

The only issue for which a birth certificate is germane is the question of Obama’s eligibility for office as a native-born citizen. Obama’s campaign already released a copy of their Certificate of Live Birth which shows his eligibility, and the blurb in the Honolulu Advertiser confirms the data on the COLB.   Obama has been confirmed as Constitutionally eligible for the office he seeks.

Undoubtedly, this will not stop the speculation among conspiracy theorists.  Taking a spin through the comments and the trackbacks at the site, one title actually says in part, “Mystery continues.”  Unless someone wants to argue that the Advertiser decided to participate in a conspiracy at Obama’s birth in 1961 to provide false citizenship on the off-chance that an infant from a union of a Kenyan father and a teenage mother would run for President, then I’d say the “mystery” is over.

Is there anything in the constitution about a prospective President being disqualified for being a moron?

sabbott on July 24, 2008 at 9:04 AM

So if it’s a myth. Why doesn’t Obama produce the actual birth certificate (he claims to have it) and dispel all the rumors?

According to the Huffington Post, Michelle Obama recently announced that Barack’s mother was single when she had him.

His own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was “very young and very single when she had him.” And, Obama added, he has observed his wife’s attempts to reconcile motherhood with her career aspirations.

This is almost two week old news, but somehow I missed it. Michelle went off-script. But either Michelle is lying, or the birth certificate is lying.

The birth certificate shows that the parents had different last names, and in no place does it mention they were married.

I think I fall into the “WGASA” camp on this one.

tickleddragon on July 24, 2008 at 10:03 AM

It’s possible that the certificate contains something embarrassing, something that cuts into the Obama “meta-narrative”, like he was listed as Caucasion, or first name Barry.

But that’s about it. It’s reason enough for them to want to hold it back.

If you consider that to be a reasonable analogy you must not have fared very well on your SATs. You should not have let yourself get carried away with other peoples’ silly attempts to be nasty by using the “truther” label to try and shame us into silence. It’s one thing for them to use the term for its emotional impact and quite another for you to try to flesh out a non-existent analogy.

If this is your idea of reasoning …

You are correct.

Still, I am curious. Michelle Obama says Obama’s parents were not married. Barack Obama says that they were.

ah, how quaint, our first 1/2 black President was also illegitimate. Welcome to the Machine.

Am I the only one here that is wishing for an Expiration Date on his Birth Certificate?

old trooper on July 24, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Who said that Obama was never born? No one. Why wouldn’t his birth be announced in a paper? Also note well in the clip, it is only a birth public announcement that doesn’t even say WHERE the birth occurred, only the home address of the parents. A mother gives birth to her son anywhere and makes the announcement for her neighbors to know.

The Berkeley research on this matter also dealt with where BHO’s mother lived prior to his birth, as she was not stateside without interruption the 10 years required for the necessary legalities for him to be eligible as a POTUS. Obama is an illegitimate candidate until he proves otherwise. This is not a court of law where a man is innocent until proven guilty. Any candidate for POTUS must prove eligible according to the Constitution, and the onus is on the candidate.

No POTUS candidate except Obama has ever refused to honor the Constitution. His refusal to be consistent is nothing to facilitate. Provide your legal certificate of live birth without alterations, BHO.

Touting the word “conspiracy” seems out of place. I want all the cards on the table. Obama is Constitutionally obligated to produce his UNALTERED legal proof of eligibility. Some skeptics rely upon Constitutional authority and thorough research; others bend to public pressure skepticism when determining what is right or wrong when the need arises to either take a public stance or to blend in with the flow.

Just see it for what it is without obsessing one way or another. If you want ALL the cards on the table, why leave the required trump card hidden in a vault for your opponent’s advantage?

maverick muse on July 24, 2008 at 11:27 AM

was it 20 years required stateside residency uninterrupted?
sorry, been a while since reading it.

maverick muse on July 24, 2008 at 11:28 AM

His mom wasn’t old enough to meet the 20 year stateside requirement in order to provide her son with POTUS eligibility via one American parent.

No?

maverick muse on July 24, 2008 at 11:34 AM

It’s a non-story. He was born in the US, he’s elible to run. There’s plenty of legitimate issues upon which to go after Obama; to persue this based on the unfounded hope that there’s something minorly embarassing on his birth certificate makes his opposition look desperate and nutty.

JiangxiDad on July 24, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Chew on Obama’s Berlin speech.

He references America’s IMPERFECTIONS, specifically dealing with immigrants and official persecution of black Americans.

How might he be framing his coming argument vs. Constitutional requirements made of black sons of immigrants who do not meet legal prerequisites for POTUS?

CITIZENS OF THE WORLD!
Marxism, blatant, pure and simple.
UN revisionism, remake the world in Marx’s image.
Trounce one bit of the US Constitution, and watch the rest find its demise as the founding principles are no longer respected or even RECOGNIZED by those powers promoting Obamarx.

Today’s audience was also made up of almost all women, but the crowd in the more affluent university area was more mixed. Participants mentioned college-loan payments and day-care fees as monthly costs that drive them to scrimp and cut corners.

Obama used the roundtable audience, as she did yesterday, to describe her husband’s understanding of women’s issues through the prism of the strong — but sometimes struggling — women in his life.

His own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was “very young and very single when she had him.” And, Obama added, he has observed his wife’s attempts to reconcile motherhood with her career aspirations.

So was he Born Barry Dunham?

and later Changed To Barack Obama?

Chakra Hammer on July 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

maybe she herself sent that info to the newspaper to be printed(so she could then later use it to try and woo the guy to Marry her, ohhh look I gave him your name in the Birth Announcement), all you need is the names for the newspaper not a certificate.. a newspaper isn’t legit..

Chakra Hammer on July 24, 2008 at 3:43 PM

If he won’t produce the official birth certificate then there’s something to hide. Have the DEMs surpassed their stupidity at nominating Al Gore and then John freakin Kerry by nominating someone who isn’t even eligible to be POTUS? Probably

Mangers don’t issue birth certificates.

Alden Pyle on July 24, 2008 at 10:35 PM

I have successfully lived my life by the axiom engendered in the following near-quote of Clemens: When I find myself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect (voting for Regan aside).

The problem with the global warming conspiracy-by-majority crisis, as well as all other examples of the railroading of public thought, is that debate is argued to be pointless, counterproductive, misguided and ultimately harmful.

Now, the Right-On blogosphere is joining the Left in chastening the right-wing skeptics (and proud we are) for finding deception in Obama’s presentation of his COLB.

I am certain that to Obama there is a significant problem with his BC since (1) he hasn’t presented it and (2) everyone insists it’s a non-issue. I’m not a ‘truther’, but when someone suggests that I am one and he uses illogical arguments (or just very poor thinking skills) to label me as one, then I expect that I am probably right.

Further, labeling the COLB issue a conspiracy only drags in the true conspiracy buffs and further muddies the issue.

Remember, Dan Rather’s argument was that the truth of the allegation was more important than the authenticity of the evidence. In this case you all are arguing that if the docs are authentic then the allegation must be false. But clearly in this instance one truth is being put forward to obscure another, more significant, truth.

Leave the investigators to their work and stop calling them ‘truthers’ lest you become the ignorant status quo that you denigrate.

flicker on July 25, 2008 at 8:42 AM

Sorry, probably shouldn’t have used the word ignorant. And I think this whole thread is a hoot; tremendous entertainment value! But what if O’Bama’s father was really Bill Cosby… or Bill Bixby? Wouldn’t want a giant green President when he gets angry would we? And what’s an EBI? Is that another African name? Oh, and I’m intrigued by this Two Obamas theory. I think there might be something to it after all.

Seriously folks, the difference between accepting that Obama, Sr. got a divorce before remarrying and McCain doing so is a matter of digestibility. But again, the issue is not whether Obama is illegitimate (I really don’t think anyone would vote against someone who would be a good President just because of circumstances of his birth) or whether he was raised a Muslim or was a British subject at birth. The issue is that Obama has written about himself in two books, has a long record of modifying his personal and political history to fit political expediency, and has made his campaign hinge on his identity and character; particularly his other-worldly, essentially socio-religious, qualities such as uniting, hoping, changing, being different and making us different.

So, insofar as he has not technically won the election yet, I think it’s highly significant whether the identity he presents of himself (as something other than an at-times angst-ridden, sometimes-white, sometimes-black, Arabic-speaking Christian; a self-made man from humble roots, raised by Martha and Jonathan Kent, with a racist black pastor, a terrorist white colleague and a dirty, Chicago-style grafter for a friend who in the end weren’t the men he thought he knew) really represents who he says he is.

In other words, in this election year of Identity Politics, I would like to know Obama’s true identity. It might make a good game show, too: Guess Obama’s Identity! The winner is awarded an ambassadorship to Chad.

flicker on July 25, 2008 at 10:09 AM

OMG! I apologize for bringing asstrollogee into this but BO does fit the Leo mold/stereotype. The ‘deeper’ perspective is that everyone has the choice of aspiring to higher or lower aspects of human nature. Barry, like Billy Jeff, is an ego-centered rather than heart-centered Leo. All that’s missing is a (big) mane of hair…It’s strange how I’ve been longing to see him with a big, fat ‘fro. ;-)

Christine on July 25, 2008 at 2:50 PM

I have no idea where Obama was born but I invariably recognize a weak argument when I see one. AP’s lack of logic is pathetic. He’s grasping at straws.

The birth announcement proves only that Obama’s birth was announced. If he had been born in Idaho the birth announcement would have appeared in the community where Obama’s parents ordinarily resided – Honolulu.

The issue is not where his parents ordinarily resided at the time of his birth but where he was born. Give us the long form birth certificate with the name of the hospital and doctor and stop insulting our intelligence by suggesting that it’s case closed because of a birth announcement.

This “proof” would only convince someone who isn’t very bright or whose mind is closed on this issue.

THE QUESTION IS NOT THE BIRTHCERTIFICATE
.
THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS ON THE BIRTHCERTIFICATE THAT MAKES THEM HIDE IT AS IF IT IS A NATIONAL SECRET
.
NOT MARRIED PARENTS, GET REAL, BIG DEAL
.
DOCTOR? HMM
.
RELIGION? HMMM
.
NO FATHER MENTIONED ON THE CERTIFICATE?
.
LAST NAME ON CERTIFICATE IS HIS MOTHERS?

WHAT THE f* IS SO IMPORTANT TO HIDE FROM US?

Two thoughts:

If the Clinton’s didn’t find it, it’s not there. I want him gone, also, but;

This is being encouraged by the Rahmbo machine while Socialized Medicine is being slipped down our throat.
