Video: Matthews wants us to “think like our kids for once” and consider race … without really considering it?

Just when people thought Chris Matthews couldn’t get any more in the tank for Barack Obama, he appears on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno to prove that nothing can limit his sycophancy for the Democratic candidate. In this clip, the supposed journalist tells Leno that he hopes people can “open up your heart” to that thrill up his leg — and that all of those geriatric racists don’t get in the way. No, I’m not kidding:

I hope for one thing when people go to vote: that they look at Barack’s background, that they look at the age of the two candidates, that they look at their abilities and really open up their hearts and say “what’s really good for my kids,” who don’t have any color awareness.

Kids don’t think about race.

Think like your kids for once.

Think the way they think.

It would be great if the older people in the country, the 70 year olds, the 80 year olds who are suspicious of change to say, “you know, why don’t I think the way my kids are thinking and think about the future.”

Whatever they decide, just open up your heart to this prospect of something different.

That’s what I hope we do.

Let’s deconstruct this. First, Matthews pretty clearly implies that anyone who doesn’t vote for Obama is doing so on the basis of race. However, the biggest reason Matthews can offer for an Obama vote is to open up our hearts to “something different”.  In other words, the most pressing reason Matthews supports Obama is not for his policies or his experience, but because he’s “different”.

At best, that’s an extremely shallow reason, and at worst, well …

But there’s another level of stupidity here.  “Think like your kids for once.  Think the way they think.”  So we should all think like eight-year-olds when we choose our leaders?  That certainly explains Matthews’ shallowness.  I’d prefer that people think like adults and inform themselves on the choices.  That would be the responsible path to voting, which is to say mature, which avoids such notions as picking (or opposing) candidates for their ethnicity or gender, or favoring Matthews’ favorite leg-thrill because it would be neato and super-cool to have Obama in the White House.

“That’s what I hope we do.”  Matthews is being dishonest here.  He hopes people vote for Barack Obama, but he doesn’t have the courage to say that on national TV.  Instead, he offers perhaps the most facile and vapid endorsement ever uttered by a media personality, and makes himself an even bigger joke than ever. I like how he quickly threw in, “look at the age of the two candidates.” I guess Matthews only gets those thrills from the the youngins. Does that make him a cradle robber?

TheNolan on July 22, 2008 at 5:14 PM

This really feeds into the line that “the only thing stopping Barack Obama is racists.” Besides the fact that he is the most inexperienced candidate in modern American history, we should submit, because well…we should act like children.

DanStark on July 22, 2008 at 5:15 PM

The old sayings come to mind, that all people eventually come to the conclussion:

If I knew then what I know now?

Hindsight is 20/20.

If you could do it over, would you?

I don’t know about you all, but I sure do not want to think like the Kids in this generation. How about my Grandparents when they were 8.

In other words, open up your heart and have the faith of a child to accept Barack Obama, the Messiah, as your Lord and Savior.

What a crock.

I watched this last night and I wasn’t shocked at what he said (same ol, same ol) until he insinuated that everyone over the age of 50 was racist(we can’t help it ya know), that blew me away.

What an incredible pile of bullsh!it.

McCain was a Navy pilot he landed on Aircraft carriers.. has served his country for all these years.. with honor and distinction and has even been known to work across party lines..

Why Vote for Obama, he’s untested?

I can’t take watching Leno anymore. He used to do a tolerably good job of joking about everyone, in spite of his lefty politics. Now he can’t bring himself to make the slightest joke about Obama or the Dems. He must have done a full year’s worth of jokes about Larry Craig but The High Holy Uber-Christ Obama is above and beyond being satirized.

Django on July 22, 2008 at 5:25 PM

I swear to God, it doesn’t matter if Obama or McCain gets into office, this nation is going to become a colostomy bag for leftist’s and RINO’s.

Even my 5yo knows to judge a person by their actions and words, not their skin tone. I guess Matthews wouldn’t want me to think like my own children then, would he?

Idiot.

Anna on July 22, 2008 at 5:26 PM

It seems to me that the only side talking about race is Obama’s. “Let’s look at their backgrounds”, okay. War hero—vs—community organizer, years of service in government—vs—years of associations with domestic terrorists, racist pastors, convicted realtors. I’ve decided and I didn’t even have to ask my kid.

A persons skin color doesn’t mean a hill of beans to me, it is WHO and WHAT that person is. Race has been 24/7 by the bho camp and I am getting so tired of it. There is a number of black people I would vote for because they are not arrogant, elitist, and seem to want do in my country. To top it off, wifeee is just as bad.

My college aged daughters, who never really gave race a thought, since they’ve always lived in very integrated neighborhoods where many of their friends are biracial, in fact. Not til they got to college, where the realities of cost and scholarship availabilities and required classes have forced them to think about race all the time….and they aren’t thinking very PC thoughts about race. They are not happy that as white chicks they can’t get more funds…but they find many unqualified minorities getting not only funds, but placement in classes they may not be qualified to be in.

Don’t worry, Chris. I will. In fact, I already have. That is why my vote is going to McCain.

I’m sure there are still racists in the GOP who wouldn’t even vote for Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Michael Steele, etc. but I think they’re a small minority.

I attended a liberal university. I lived in the most liberal dorm on that campus. When my conservatism was discovered, I was branded the local racist. After that, almost all my friends were black. They explained that they preferred my company because they didn’t think I was bullshitting them. CM knows that racist Democrats are all in the closet. That’s why Obama polls better than he actually does in the elections. That’s who CM is worried about, not us.

You know, in many cultures older people are considered to have gained wisdom by life experience. Maybe the “youth vote” should be listening to their elders. Just a thought….

MNDavenotPC on July 22, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Perhaps Matthews’ over-the-top boosterism for Obama is best understood as a kind of mid-life crisis. Regardless of the fact that the boomer generation has been in control of this country for nearly a generation, the boomers love to pretend that their parents are still in charge. Obama makes Chris (and his leg), feel like they’re back in the day, stickin’ it to the man.

Mallard T. Drake on July 22, 2008 at 6:52 PM

I was just watching CNN and Jack Cafferty was on. This guy is right up there with Matthews as a HUGE Obama shill. They were talking about the Surge and Obama saying he would still be against it knowing what he knows now. Then Cafferty goes off saying what a silly question it is and how he’s tired of hearing McCain “whining” about the surge. Says how the surge was the past and its about the future now. But then later on he goes on about Obama’s judgment about opposing the Iraq war from the beginning.

You always know how the media is behind Barack in this election and you tell yourself that, but just hearing these people in the media it still amazes me.

I hope for one thing when people go to vote: that they look at Barack’s background

Barack’s background: abandoned as a toddler, raised in Indonesia and Hawaii, believed “God d@mn AmeriKKKa” to be Christianity for 20 years, organized failed communities of slums, got his political start through Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko, never did anything of substance in the Senate. After carefully considering Barack’s background, I prefer the courageous son of an Admiral who was tortured for his country, and reorganized a squadron of fighter planes.

really open up their hearts and say “what’s really good for my kids

My kid wants to be an airline pilot. Will anyone have money to fly anymore if we can’t drill for oil in the States, and we let His Majesty squander the national treasury on socialism?

the older people in the country, the 70 year olds, the 80 year olds who are suspicious of change

I’m not 70 yet, but I remember the ’70’s. Rationed gasoline, runaway inflation and unemployment, couldn’t afford a house because of 20% interest. Been there, done that, don’t want to go back, good reason to be suspicious.
