I’m going to sugest something different. My personal rule of realpolitik is to never remove an incompetent leader from the other side.
Sending the Iranian fuel refinery defective parts or putting catalyst poisons in the feedstock is more my style. Even if a sadly catastrophic accident doesn’t occur, the refinery is down for maintenance.

I’m glad the Russians are laughing.. While delivering their state of the art air defenses & nuclear fuel to Iran and signing deals. I hope we strike – if anything just to shut those systems down totally and embarrass the Russians internationally AGAIN, cost them tens of billions of dollars in sales, and show the world how inferior the Russian prowess really is compared to the USA turbo boosted Zio weapons!

I think it was almost formally established when the Iranians snatched those Brits and we did nothing. If Bush had been serious about Iran he would have seen that opportunity for what it was and jumped on it.

Yep. That was a weird blip on the political landscape, stretching credulity to the absolute limit. It certainly did bring many things to a dead stop for a while.

Personally, I was of the mind that Bush was kind of happy that the pressure was taken off of him for a bit, since I had already lost faith in his desire to deal with Iran before he left office.

Yep. That’s been clear for a while, now. I think it was almost formally established when the Iranians snatched those Brits and we did nothing. If Bush had been serious about Iran he would have seen that opportunity for what it was and jumped on it. After that, though, I had no doubt that the country that has been tasked by the world with taking care of the Iranian threats (and then being castigated and punished by the world for doing so) is Israel.

Of course, if Israel ends up having to take care of Iran on its own then Israel is entitled to some spoils to compensate – the Iranian oil fields and the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranians have a shortage of gasoline, therefore, someone is smuggling gasoline into Iran, therefore someone is making money, therefore there is competition in the black market. I’d think a few covert hits on the various groups smuggling may spark a war between rival criminals and reduce the gasoline supplies without sanctions or military strikes on refineries. I doubt it’d be enough by itself, but a little more pressure here and a little more pressure there, and the regime may just crack.

Possibly, the Bush administration doesn’t want to hurt McCain’s chances in the election by having McCain associated with “warmongering”, knowing that an Obama administration would botch this royally.

But McCain could use this to his advantage, by saying that Obamn’s willingness to talk to Ahmadinejad is foolish, since the Iranians have already told the United States that they refuse to talk about the real issue!
