Good news: Iranian nuke proposal reduces western diplomat to laughter

posted at 10:39 am on July 22, 2008 by Allahpundit

The famous Ahmadinejad sense of humor at work? Not quite. A jolly follow-up to last weekend’s post about the big face-to-face between the U.S. and Iran having accomplished jack:

The title of the English-language text had two mistakes. “The Modality for Comrehensive Negotiations (None paper),” it read, according to a copy obtained by The New York Times. (Diplomatic jargon for an unofficial negotiating document is “nonpaper.”)

For the six powers — the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany — the paper’s substance was just as disappointing as its style. Sergei Kisliak, the Russian deputy foreign minister, could not suppress a laugh when he read it, according to one participant…

[B]oth in their paper, and throughout the talks, the Iranians did not discuss the [proposed western] formula, called a “freeze for freeze.” As a result, they left the impression that they wanted to lure the parties into an open-ended, cost-free, high-level negotiating process.

“The paper calls for a huge exercise in talking,” said one senior European official. “If you were to try to implement it, it would take a minimum of several years.”…

The Iranian document also seemed to suggest that there could be no discussion of the main issue of contention: some sort of limit on Iran’s production of enriched uranium, which can be used to make electricity or to fuel bombs.

Note the detail near the end of the Times piece about how far Iranian diplomacy has degraded since 2003, when the nuclear tango first began. That’s partly a consequence of Ahmadinejad — who has no real power within the regime according to Obama acolytes, remember — replacing the old team leading the negotiations with his own halfwit cronies. But don’t fret. The clock is ticking as we speak on a new two-week deadline for an Iranian response, with a most dreadful penalty indeed in the offing if they fail to come through: another round of meaningless UN sanctions.

More and more it looks like Bush is prepared to punt this issue to the next administration, in which case read this open letter to Barry O at TNR by Yossi Klein Halevi. He wants the same thing I’ve been asking for in half a dozen previous posts: “We worry … that the sanctions will be inadequate and that the Iranians will exploit American dialogue as cover to complete their nuclearization. Unless stopped, Iran’s nuclear program will reach the point of no return within the early phases of the next administration. We need to hear that under no circumstances would an Obama administration allow the Iranian regime to go nuclear — that if sanctions and diplomacy fail, the U.S. will either attack or else support us if we do.” Don’t hold your breath.

Blowback

Looks like the Iranian government agrees with Obama’s plans too.

A waste of time trying to negotiate…IMO.

The headline here isn’t quite accurate–a RUSSIAN deputy foreign minister is not a WESTERN diplomat.

Possibly, the Bush administration doesn’t want to hurt McCain’s chances in the election by having McCain associated with “warmongering”, knowing that an Obama administration would botch this royally.

But McCain could use this to his advantage, by saying that Obamn’s willingness to talk to Ahmadinejad is foolish, since the Iranians have already told the United States that they refuse to talk about the real issue!

Olmert is close to indictment and his party has set elections for September. Yesterday he called his own FM a ‘backstabbing liar’.

Change is in the air and it won’t care what the U.N. is doing.

Bush can’t do anything “definitive” about Iran, militarily, at this point. That ramp-up would take months. And success in Iran will not come from any hit-and-run attack. It has to be sledgehammer, if anything. So, he’s kicking the can down the road. It’s all he can do.

Let’s see…

The Iranians have a shortage of gasoline, therefore, someone is smuggling gasoline into Iran, therefore someone is making money, therefore there is competition in the black market. I’d think a few covert hits on the various groups smuggling may spark a war between rival criminals and reduce the gasoline supplies without sanctions or military strikes on refineries. I doubt it’d be enough by itself, but a little more pressure here and a little more pressure there, and the regime may just crack.

It’s a shame Bob Newhart is retired. These negotiations would make a great sitcom for his unique talent. Imagine him doing his trademark one sided telephone gig with the Iranians.

Yep. That’s been clear for a while, now. I think it was almost formally established when the Iranians snatched those Brits and we did nothing. If Bush had been serious about Iran he would have seen that opportunity for what it was and jumped on it. After that, though, I had no doubt that the country that has been tasked by the world with taking care of the Iranian threats (and then being castigated and punished by the world for doing so) is Israel.

Of course, if Israel ends up having to take care of Iran on its own then Israel is entitled to some spoils to compensate – the Iranian oil fields and the Strait of Hormuz.

That intentionally slanted NIE report put together by the CIA doves saying Iranian bomb efforts had stopped, also didn’t help. It stopped the momentum.

Yep. That was a weird blip on the political landscape, stretching credulity to the absolute limit. It certainly did bring many things to a dead stop for a while.

Personally, I was of the mind that Bush was kind of happy that the pressure was taken off of him for a bit, since I had already lost faith in his desire to deal with Iran before he left office.

Actually the Brits declined our offer. As far as the Brits were concerned and they said so publicly, they were not at war with Iran. Unbelievable!

Texas Gal on July 22, 2008 at 11:42 AM

That’s true, but we are in charge over there. While the hostages were British, they were operating under the Coalition forces, which made it us.

It was something else. Twilight Zonish.

Now that’s funny!

4shoes on July 22, 2008 at 12:38 PM

It’s funny, but all the military signs point to something this fall. We’ll have 2 marine expeditionary groups in the gulf. We’ll have 6 (6!) carriers available. Olmert is about gone. I suspect this is the “see, we tried the diplomacy effort, we really did” before the hammer comes down.

Vanceone on July 22, 2008 at 12:50 PM

The brits have live hostages in Iraq now too, it’s been a big secret for some reason.. one committed ‘suicide’ this past week – The long arm of Iran no doubt and why not? No major consequences.

I’m glad the Russians are laughing.. While delivering their state of the art air defenses & nuclear fuel to Iran and signing deals. I hope we strike – if anything just to shut those systems down totally and embarrass the Russians internationally AGAIN, cost them tens of billions of dollars in sales, and show the world how inferior the Russian prowess really is compared to the USA turbo boosted Zio weapons!

1st we will shoot down all the russian jets, then blowout their precious defense systems, and drop BIG fraken bombs right on the Russian nuclear facilities in Iran – probably take a whack load of their ‘secret’ technicians at the same time.. We’ve been leaving Russian hardware smoking in the desert for 6 decades now, Ooops, hahaha! :)

Selling Chavez weapons now, billions worth.. Charming.

saus on July 22, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Either Bush or the Israelis need to strike soon. If you think war would be bad now wait til a nuclear capable Iran decides to drive us from the gulf.

I’m going to sugest something different. My personal rule of realpolitik is to never remove an incompetent leader from the other side.
Sending the Iranian fuel refinery defective parts or putting catalyst poisons in the feedstock is more my style. Even if a sadly catastrophic accident doesn’t occur, the refinery is down for maintenance.
What would happen if there was no gasoline for the Iranian public?

NaCly dog on July 22, 2008 at 4:10 PM

phew! it’s a good thing the EU demanded a leading role in making this happen. You guys sure did what we couldn’t. /sarc

At least the guy is scared (though he doesn’t admit it) that we are more than willing to turn his entire country to dust.

(Why do people take the EU seriously again? I mean their biggest member (Germany) has a populace that wants out of the currency as it is. C’mon…maybe it’s the impressive collection of armies they have that do exceptionally well at getting their asses kicked or saved by us that has people fawning over the EU)
