Novak: McCain to name VP this week

If it’s true — and a few GOP sources who spoke to Politico have their doubts — then it’s probably Romney, right? Consensus has it that he’s at the top of the short list and if you want to maximize Mitt’s fundraising it makes sense to roll him out as soon as possible.
So why, then, is McCain suddenly headed to New Orleans to meet with Jindal on Wednesday?
That’s not your exit question, actually. This is: Assuming McCain goes first and it’s not Palin, how does that affect Obama’s options in possibly picking a woman? I tend to subscribe to the Limbaugh/KP theory that Barry O wants to avoid putting Hillary or Sebelius on the ticket if at all possible lest that combo seem too “diverse” for some voters, but if McCain makes a play for female voters by choosing a woman, Obama might have no choice.

Finally, after months,it will be Mitt Romney.

Somehow I doubt that panto is a Southerner or a Baptist.
flenser on July 21, 2008 at 8:38 PM
#1 - Um, did you click on the ‘uai’ link? It’s not a real thing. It’s an extreme view of what could happen with Obama’s plan — a stronger Iran that ultimately dominates Iraq.
What part of that geopolitical reference is “religion’s intolerance?”
#2 - I’m not even Baptist for crying out loud. And I’m NOT supporting the select voters’ (not limited to Baptists) bigotry. What I am is a REALIST, and like it or not, Mitt was a FAILURE as a candidate, due in (some) part to the clash of Mormonism vs. older Mainline/”evangelical” southerners.
I’m not condoning it.
Just saying, with McCain not exactly “Jesus is my most admired historical figure” a la GWB in the 2000 Iowa campaign, and with millions of Christians lukewarm to McCain anyway, AND with the prospect of what — 70%? 80%? black turnout in the south with Obama on the ticket, the GOP would be IDIOTS to run as vp an electoral LOSER that millions of people (unfairly, but still) disqualify on religion alone.
But go ahead, by all means, let’s nominate the $100 million failure as VP, lose NC & Georgia, and watch St. Barack “realign” American politics for the next 30 years.
I don’t care if Romney prays to Xenu the Scientologist; but apparently, millions of voters do. Vp is pretty unimportant (remember the memorable reign of vice president nelson rockefeller?), so why waste it with ANY sort of polarizing pick?!?!
(and if you think black turnout won’t be 75% minimum, you have no idea how the DNC machine works down here…. heck in the 2000 campaign, you had interviews of elementary kids in south carolina, tiny kids (black) crying that George W Bush was going to “put them in chains” — where did they hear such a thing? “the men who came and talked in our church last week”.)
McCain-Romney ‘08 republican party slogan = “Our pork and amnesty already ticked off the Western libertarians in 06, so we might as well shun the Southern socialcons while we’re at it! But hey! We still have support of the Cuban-born (until Fidel dies)”

Let Jindal and Palin do the great jobs we expect them to do in their states. We need states run by conservative governors to set an example for the rest of the nation. If I’m not mistaken, 6 years ago republicans were in the majority as governors and now they are behind the democrats. Jindal and Palin are young, they are the future.

My own hunch is that McCain will announce his veep choice at the convention, but who knows. But I am 100% sure…it’s Crist.
We all know how McCain feels about the Vice-Presidential job. And Crist is his perfect choice. Palin, Romney, Jindal…none of them would “fit” there.

flenser on July 21, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Yes, and that may be part of the reason for the announcement now, before the Olympics, to maximize that angle.
There has also been speculation (yesterday on MTP) that Obama would announce his running mate in 2 weeks (after his trip but before the Olympics).
So by announcing this week, McCain gets his pick out there pre-Olympics AND gets to step on the coverage of the Messiah’s Grand Tour.

Either Jindal or Mitt.

McCain’s not really dumb enough to let the MSM pick his VP, is he? Don’t answer that.

If you want to put it that way…heh…then YES. Again, if I’ve been wrong in thinking Crist had the job locked up for months now, I will bow to you all and sing your praises.
But if I’ve been right all along…
McCain’s been visiting Jindal, and Palin, he’s in good with Mitt…who HASN’T McCain been in these talks and meet-ups with? Crist. Because he has the job.
JetBoy on July 21, 2008 at 9:06 PM
I’m with you on this one, Aero! That’s a great mental image, and it would play well all across this industrious energy hungry land.
While Obama steps on his own thingy! ;)
Personally, I like Romney and I even like Mormons, but I don’t like the unfortunate religious bigotry it would engender. And just wait until the left comes out with the early Mormon teachings on race…you haven’t seen ugly yet. (Sorry Bambi, but it’s out there, you just haven’t seen it yet)
Maquis on July 21, 2008 at 9:06 PM
I couldn’t agree more on this one. Conservatives in fact need to strengthen the “farm system” from the community governments forward. Romney could shore up McCains economic “weakness” although compared to Obama’s taxpayer assisted give-aways, it’s hardly a weakness. Steve Forbes would make a great Treasury Sec. And Mac could bring Petraeus home as the true hero he is and make him Sec of Def.

whitetop on July 21, 2008 at 9:11 PM
The only reason he did “that well” is that he ran away from being a conservative in debates. Not Romney’s high point, snubbing Reagan.
That being said, Romney is not a bad choice. As VP he can’t make policy, he has money, can bring in a certain amount of money, he carries Utah (but so would McCain), he has the “he knows the economy” card.
I am still not convinced he can win more votes then lose. My choice would be Palin, it forces Barack to make a choice he would not want to make. Palin would be the “energy” part of the ticket and that may be the hottest issue come voting times. And Hlllary’s supporters would think twice about McCain with Palin.
right2bright on July 21, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Ed Rollins said that McCain needs to pick a kind of candidate that will grasp national attention and surprise people. Conservatives would probably say Romney since there is bad blood between the two (although I think it is blown out of proportion).
However, I think a attention-grabbing candidate would be Palin, Jindal, or Rudy. They have favorables, are unknown to many who are not as vigorous in political news, and are interesting.
Jindal and Palin are unique in Republican political history. Palin is a woman who is the most popular governor in the USA. Jindal is young and a rising star, whose parents are Indian and hard-working; The quintessential American dream. It doesn’t hurt that Rush and Newt love the guy for VP.
Rudy is a popular guy with independents and moderates, as well as some democrats. He is well-known and liked by many outside of the snobby liberal elitists of Manhattan.
jencab on July 21, 2008 at 9:21 PM
To use baseball language, this is no time to be calling up the kids before they’re ready. Let Palin and Jindal get more at-bats in the farm. They will have thier turn but they don’t make Team McCain better now. Romney is the veteran stud you trade for.

upinak on July 21, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Palin is too green.
Rudy is a one-trick liberal pony that was awful in debates.
Jindal is too young.
Crist is a lightwieght-McCain has to win Florida without bribing them with a Veep.
Sanford can’t speak apparently.
Pawlenty is too unknown.
You can’t pick another Senator.
Huckabee is too “mavericky” i.e. untrustworthy.
Romney puts Michigan in play, has backed McCain the last few months and can make the conservative case with fire and eloquence (see CPAC speech) and has the gravitas needed to call into question the Dem ticket experience on economics.
Easy choice and the right one.

upinak on July 21, 2008 at 9:55 PM
I’ve no doubt he’s capable of doing the job, being VP isn’t exactly hard. However in terms of political experience, I don’t think that a single term as governor qualifies as a “veteran”. Jindal and Palin haven’t been governor as long, but both had some degree of political experience prior; either of them could also perform the (meager) role of VP.
Hollowpoint on July 21, 2008 at 9:58 PM
If he is really announcing the Veep this week
ODDS
Romney - 15% - Best objective pick, but the leak on polling over the weekend, plus lack of sizzle against World Tour Obination says long shot
Palin - 15% - Would be great strategy versus Don’t Drill Democrats, plus the HRC supporters. Hasn’t been the buzz except for the blogs, who? factor nationally
Jindal - 45% - Get to play the oil strategy with the Gulf region. Plays to the South. Would fire up the base, which is his biggest worry right now. (the citizens of LA deserve to get a full 8 years of Bobby, but if O’ wins, SCOTUS is lost for generations.)
Rudy - 10% - Only other individual I can think that has the gravitas to warrant an announcement this week.
Total RINO - 15% - Can’t discount another thumb in the eye from McVain

I don’t think the VP job should be a meager one, especially McCain’s VP. One political experience that Romney has that the others don’t is a grueling MSM anal exam. Mitt had his and the worst they found are his polygamous ancestors, dog crap on a minivan roof, and hiring landscapers who hire illegals. Also with Mitt, you are not pulling someone away from his/her current job. I think thats a plus.
Greenhorn on July 21, 2008 at 10:09 PM
So if you are in the Senate or working as a Congressman/woman, it shouldn’t matter either?

upinak on July 21, 2008 at 10:19 PM
Actually these ‘Barry will tell in two weeks’…’McCain will tell in one’….sounds like a big fishing expedition on both sides. Barry still has Jordan, Israel, Ramallah, Paris, London, and Berlin rock concerts coming up. He should provide plenty of fish-flopping sound bytes before he gets home for McCain to use against him.
Rasmussen today: Obama +1 (LVs)
Gallup today: Obama +6 (RVs)
So it’s probably about +3. The Obama heads must reaching for the Charmin over those numbers. He should be +15 (if you listen to the MSM).

MB4 on July 21, 2008 at 10:32 PM
Whether it should or shouldn’t be, it historically is a meager job. Cheney was something of an exception as he had a long history in the exectutive branch and advisor before taking office.
More typically, their role is to attend state funerals not important enough for the President and other such symbolic or diplomatic duties. Rarely does a VP have significant effect on policy.
Hollowpoint on July 21, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Eh….my personal take on Jindal was toooooo animated. I watched him on the late night circuit and all the fidgeting made me nervous. I know, that kinda deep thinking will get me in trouble.
Limerick on July 21, 2008 at 10:37 PM
I would like to add McCain seems like the stubborn type. His advisers could tell him, “Pick so and so it will help to bring us a certain demographic.” And he will say, “Nope. I like this person more and that’s all there is to it.”
terryannonline on July 21, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Much to the chagrin of a lot of posters here, you can rule out Palin also. She is going to be under investigation for abuse of power, why would McCain bring that upon his campaign?

I KNEW this was going to come up. And I waited for some jerk to bring it up!
So lets investigate the “Issue” on this investigation:
Sister is married/seperated to a State Trooper here in Alaska, who has illegally shot a moose and has Tazed a child. Yet was not under ingestigastion via the Person she put in charge of the the State Troopers and was only put on a 3 day leave.
Does anyone else see a problem here?
Do you think it is possibly the Media that is saying this is favoritism for the Palin Family? Or would this be an power and abuse issue with the State Troopers?
In any State if there is an issue with the law Enforcement and a complain is issued (it wouldn’t matter who was in charge or in office) most complaints against an officer is usually taken seriously. Why not in this instance?
Some people need to worry about their own State before worrying about mine!

The commissioner and the trooper are tied together in this story. All anyone has to do is google it and see this is a he-said-she-said cat fight. After reading Palin’s statements in the AK papers, and Monegan’s backtracking on the ‘pressure’ statements I believe the Palin has backed the good senator in a corner by telling him to put up or shut up.
Limerick on July 21, 2008 at 11:11 PM
If this election is being fought
inwith the media, then the McCain candidacy needs something that will distract them from their OCD-Obama Compulsive Disorder. Palin will come at them like a fly ball appearing out of the lights at a night game–they won’t know what hit them. The bear rug picture–the Vogue cover–now there are some political issues that this media can sink its teeth into. They won’t be able to lay off of it, trust me. She’ll make Obama look like old news. Nobody’s been commenting on what the calculus is for 2012, either. Is Romney the guy we’ll want then? Or maybe he IS the guy because he’ll get knocked out by Jindal? I don’t know. I also think Palin is a greatpicpick because the left, and the MSM will be tying themselves in knots trying to say that because she’s a knuckle-dragging conservative she doesn’t count as a woman, even as the MSM won’t be able to lay off the T&A aspect off the story. Pretzel time!!! One more demonstration of how completely bankrupt identity politics is as an intellectual proposition.smellthecoffee on July 21, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Limerick on July 21, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Oh I’ve been ready for this to end. It’s painful to watch anymore. McCain is lurching from issue to issue like a punch drunk boxer anymore. I think he’d be better off if he was tied up and shoved into a padded room until after the election. He does so much better when other like Captain Ed carry his water without his speaking at all.
When he speaks, the Conservatives are immediately reminded that he intends to lie to us during the campaign, and take a huge dump on us after the election. The moderates are reminded that he’s a politician, and he’s probably lying again, even when he says what time it is. The Liberals claim he’s really a conservative, apparently they and Captain Ed are the only ones who believe that.
No, shut him up from now to November, and he’ll do better in the polling, and might even win this thing.

I don’t think it’s a hit job, no doubt it was brought to light by her political adversaries (among them conservative Republicans mind you) that really dislike her and her politics but that doesn’t change the fact that there appears to be some unethical dealings in the firing of Monegan. The timing of it she brought on herself. I get the feeling she isn’t going to come out of the investigation looking all that good. There probably ain’t enough there that she has to worry about a recall or impeachment but enough to do some serious damage to her popularity and her national ambitions.

Wait…I do: No to Crist, although I heard he was engaged (to a woman), flenser. Could be a beard, I suppose.

What State do you live in? Do you have any clue about the Murkowski Republicans? How about the Knowles Democrats? How about the old fashioned types… Hammond Republicans?

If he picks Sarah Palin, I will be out there campaigning for McCain enthusiastically.

Limerick,
I love her resume, and her ability to speak the language, and I think it’s too soon. She’s such a new name to everyone. Does that matter?
Reagan’s Bush had enormous experience, as did Cheney. Both were formidable in the job and immune to the shrieks of the leftists.
Bush’s Quail was very young and of limited experience, and he was roasted alive.
Clinton had an experienced ManBearPig, but it doesn’t matter, because the press gives Dems a free ride. Oh, the unfairness of it all; Obambi could put up a cigar store Indian for VP and NBC would invent (favorable) quotes for it…
