Logan to Obama: Remind me, how does your policy on the Pakistani tribal areas differ from Bush’s?

It doesn’t really. If he gets Bin Laden in the crosshairs, he’ll shoot to kill — as will Bush, a point Obama concedes. If he gets Al Qaeda’s training camps in the crosshairs, he’ll … pressure Pakistan to move against them, a strategy that’s failed dismally under the GOP but which will work like a charm, I suppose, once it’s infused with magic Messiah mojo and greenmail in the form of a tripling in the amount of non-military aid we currently send to the country. Are Pakistanis really going to jettison their ethno-religious identification with denizens of the tribal areas and go storming into AQ camps when their military’s had a hell of a time there over the past few years, just because the amount of U.S. lucre they’re getting increased by some arbitary amount? Can’t hurt to try, but set expectation phasers on lowest low.

As for the point noted by Geraghty at the very end, about the Iraq invasion of 2003 leading us to “take our eye off the ball” in December 2001, I’m guessing Obama’s thinking of this WaPo piece from 2006. Exit question borrowed from Ace: To the extent that Obama’s hinting he’ll hit the training camps unilaterally if Pakistan balks, does the left’s mantra that killing terrorists only breeds more terrorists apply in that case too or does Barry get to use his “get out of talking points free” card?

Is it my imagination, or does Barry have “date face” in that interview? (actually can’t really say I blame him, Logan is a real “sweetie” no wonder she starts so many fights in the press corps…..)

Dear God… how did he get this close to the nomination again? I honestly can not figure that out.

I listened to it twice just to hear her voice. Did Obama say anything?

UncleZeb on July 21, 2008 at 4:54 PM

So bombing some terrorists just creates new terrorists. Bombing some other terrorists flattens them and fixes the problem.

Got it.

Interviewer: “But Mr. Obama, what if the Pakistani’s refuse to cooperate?”

Obama: “We’ll just have to change that.”

How, Merlin? With the same kind of brute force deployed by the administration you have criticized for doing the same?

Mozart: [hesitantly] I never knew that music like that was possible!
Obama: [uncertainly] You flatter me.
Mozart: No, no! One hears such sounds, and what can one say but…”Obama.”

NeighborhoodCatLady on July 21, 2008 at 5:01 PM

With his love of languages Obama probably already speaks Urdu, which will help him in his diplomacy with the Pakis. That’s where “merci beaucoup” comes from, isn’t it?

Cicero43 on July 21, 2008 at 5:02 PM

You guys just don’t get it.

If Bush does something, it’s bad.

If Obama does the same thing, it’s good.

Because the Ego Has Landed.

One word for the new Marxist-Muslim Prophet, Barack HUSSEIN Obama (PBUH)(SAW)(SWT), that despite his practice of “Taqiyah“, I gaurantee he doesn’t know, which is incredible, given his all-knowning, all-seeing, Lightwhiter Exaltedness, that sums up the problem in Afghanistan AND Pakistan: “Pashtunwali“!

Is also explains why he and his 300 so-called “foreign policy” adivsors, are nothing more than a Keystone Kops routine of ass-clowns!

Dale in Atlanta on July 21, 2008 at 5:06 PM

Obama going to use the Bush doctrine.

Obama more of the same.

McCain wants a change of strategy in Afghanistan.

So the Dope wants to go into Pakistan, or send someone else.

Having seen those “tribal regions” I can assure you that it is rough territory and the “neighbors” are pretty brutal.

Two Divisions? Where is he going to get them? You can’t pull them out of your ass! I think he needs to get his ass up in those mountains to “organize” that neighborhood.
Those rough folks are not real keen on diplomacy. They will
kill you with any means at hand.

I was there in 02 and I know better. Either the Paks take care of it eventually or 10 Divisions are not enough.

does Barry get to use his “get out of talking points free” card?

Silly, Allah. Of course he gets to use one of his innumerable “get out of talking points free” cards. This guy isn’t held to any standard of truth or consistency.

Troy Rasmussen on July 21, 2008 at 5:30 PM

With a military and intel agencies that he will certainly dismantle, (as all dems do) just how is he going to back anything up. Maybe is he says “pretty please” to the Paks.

oakpack on July 21, 2008 at 5:33 PM

A couple of things stuck out to me when I saw this interview this weekend, one of them being chiefly the point Obama made of getting his will done by dumping huge sums of cash into Pakistan.. Itself a not so subtle backtrack on his big ‘invasion plans’.

Why did I find that interesting? Because Obama was 1st in line to call for ‘funding reviews’ and possibly cutting off all US funding to Musharaf & Pakistan, when Bhuto was killed by extremists.. So first cutting funding was ‘the way to go to get things done’, and now ‘tripling funding is the way to go’..

Someone get me a Gravol please, I get motion sickness watching the US Democratic nominee sway massively to and fro on foreign policy.

The left will be okay with Obama because there is a D behind his name. Period. It doesn’t matter the substance of his stances……and that has already been made obvious.
Scary !!!!!!!!!! if he becomes the next Commander In Chief! Scary!

You mean the same policy he was criticized by Republicans and Democrats for and then when Bush did it the Republicans stayed silent? Oh yeah, that one.

Love the “taken our eye off the ball” comment. Shows he has no grasp of history-AGAIN. UBL and AQ made it into Pakistan in late 2001. The buildup and rhetoric for the invasion of Iraq began w GWB’s Sept 12, 2002 address/challenge to the UN, and the actual invasion didn’t take place until after the 6-month “rush”; March 2003.

So please…someone ask Obama how invading Iraq in 2003 allowed UBL and AQ to make it into Pakistan in 2001?

scottm on July 21, 2008 at 6:50 PM

There is a brilliant idea, triple the tribute and expect positive results from the people who have been useless so far . If you double that triple, maybe you will get results in half the time you expect.

Same way the 1965 civil rights march in Selma inspired Obama’s parents to conceive him for his birth in 1961. Time has no meaning in Barry’s world; the magical lightworker can twist time to do his bidding.

DubiousD on July 21, 2008 at 9:38 PM

This guy’s plans make me so sad. The idea that he’s proposing getting rid of our nuclear weapons is absurd. The minute we lose our nuclear weapons is the minute we no longer become a super power.

The only reason we became a superpower before was we detonated two nuclear bombs to end a war and the world was afraid of us. They were afraid we would do it again so they did what we said.

Now, this guy is pledging to give our ENEMIES in Pakistan 3x the amount we give them now (jizya) for the next 10 years. Of course it isn’t HIS money, it’s OUR money he’s giving them with no pre-conditions. And he wants us to get rid of our nuclear weapons.

If I had an enemy who said they were going to beat me by giving me money and getting rid of their weapons, I’d laugh. This is what this man is saying and has been saying. We are going to win world peace by giving away our money and getting rid of our weapons.

This, dear friends, is ridiculously dangerous. . . and to me, proof that democracy isn’t a very good form of government. This person is no commander-in-chief. The only thing he has going for him is that he’s black.

After getting my head to quit spinning around in utter amazement to see a journalist actually asking Obama some real questions and holding his feet to the fire, his stupid “taking our eye off the ball” comment made me think of this very point Scottm.

Only an absolute idiot would believe that taking out Saddam
Hussein, defeating Al-qaeda in the central front of the WOT,and creating the first Arab democracy is a “mistake” and
“taking our eye off the ball”.

I also get sick of hearing democrats complain about Osama
getting away with thosands of our troops putting their lives on the line to kill him when they let his a$$ run around in the 90’s free as a bird and watched him build al-qaeda up to the dangerous terrorist organization that we are having to take down today.
Clinton had over 8 chances to kill Osama and did nothing. Now they want to invade Pakistan because they “think” he is in the hills still alive.
If “Chicken Hawk” Obama does send troops into Pakistan and Osama is not there, will they call him a lying, imperialistic, war criminal like they have done Bush over Iraq?
