Video: Who would play McCain’s VP candidates in the made-for-TV movie?

Three quick hits from last night’s appearance on Conan running the comedy gamut from tired (literally) to funny to lolz. If you can’t spare three minutes, just watch the last clip. Does McCain crack up at the Huckabee bit because it’s hilarious (which it is) or because it’s the only pop-cult reference he got?

Huck really ought to think about incorporating “Shazam” into his stump speeches.

Pretty good performance. What kills me is that this kind of appearances are apparently required these days. Why?

freevillage on July 19, 2008 at 3:36 PM

The TV movie shtick was hilarious.

Vicente Fox? Juan Hernandez?

I can’t decide if McCain is legitimately genial and humorous, or if he’s just willing to put up with the undignified crap that modern campaigning has become.

Because it shows that McCain isn’t the “confused”, stodgy old fart the DNC and Obama campaign are trying to brand him as.

Oh who cares. It’s gonna be epic in November.

Probably both.

Because a vast percentage of Americans would probably be fine with (or even more interested in) electing President via a reality-tv show with call-in voting.

Glad to see that McCain has a sense of humor.

JG2K6 on July 19, 2008 at 3:57 PM

They can’t make fun of Barack because he’s black, but they can call Condi “snoop dog” a male, dope smokin’ gangsta rapper… Uhhh… double standard for Conservatives..

Chakra Hammer on July 19, 2008 at 4:22 PM

OK, those jokes were not unfunny, but do were they that hilarious as to merit that level of audience laughter? Me is more and more depressed at the average level of intelligence of Americans….sigh.

(Latenight tv ceased being funny several years before Letterman went to CBS; and that would include SNL.)

I am too young to know Gomer, but the name seems to match that of a squirrel eater.

Considering the direction the Obama campaign and the candidate are going — towards solidifying an image of a candidate with no self-depreciation and a campaign that goes into attack mode over any joke that is viewed as a slight against the candidate — McCain’s sense of humor could actually turn into a campaign asset for the senator by the time November rolls around.

It’s hard to imagine Obama or his staff getting together with Conan or any other TV comedy show — yes, even Jon Stewart — and going along with a pre-arranged skit to poke fun at himself (now, an Obama appearance on Letterman, Conan, Leno or with Stewart where he goes along with a pre-arranged skit to poke fun at McCain, its simple to visualize that happening and would be more surprising if it doesn’t happen before November).

Has Senator McCain gone on Dr Phil yet? Now that would be something to watch.

Gotta go with freevillage on that… it’s a bit of both.

On one hand, the man clearly knows how serious the issues around this election are, and there’s no doubt an element of his knowing how much more personable and likeable he is in that sort of setting than Obama is, and a cold calculation.

On the other, the guy really does have a sense of humor, and has always been willing to poke fun of himself – he’s been a regular on the Daily Show for years, and that may wreak some unforeseen havoc on Obama’s youth turnout come November when the Chope Mantra is beginning to wear off.

Mac’s got a lot of faults, but he’s probably one of the few Congresscritters who really understands and appreciates a bit of self-referential humor, and the good PR it represents… Bill Clinton used to be able to do that, as did Bob Dole (who gained a following after a few appearances on the Daily Show as well… but only after the ‘96 race was over), and Rudy Guliani (who beat the snot out of “Joe Pesci” on SNL years ago with a stickball bat).

I really wonder about that myself. I’m no McCain fan but he seemed to be enjoying himself somewhat..maybe he’s a really good actor. It’s hard to reconcile the genial good natured man he was in the clips above with the nasty backstabbing end runner he was in Congress. still fun to watch though.
That Condi slide was a nasty jab; they weren’t doing too bad up until then. They also blew it on Crist. George Hamilton would have been a funnier choice than Bob Barker; especially if they used the Bunny Wigglesworth character from Zorro, the Gay Blade. That was a bloody classic.

Who would play the eventual VP, Sarah Palin?

jgapinoy on July 19, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Although Huckabee does look like Gomer, he really should be played by Goober.

EJDolbow on July 19, 2008 at 9:31 PM

It’s kind of sad and morbid to me to see him sitting there joking about dying in office if he’s elected. I don’t know about Conan, but there are so many haters who would love for it to happen, and he surely knows this, but he plays along with the jokes. I guess in a way he is forced into it, but the whole business just seems in bad taste.

Wake me when O’Brien cracks one single Obama joke.

WasatchMan on July 20, 2008 at 3:34 AM

Yeah, I want to see how the writers portray the Democrat candidates.

It makes me wonder how many more people are familiar with Gomer Pyle than Captain Marvel?
