Iraq, Maliki went on to say, “would like to see the establishment of a long-term strategic treaty with the United States, which would govern the basic aspects of our economic and cultural relations.” He also emphasized though that the security agreement between the two countries should only “remain in effect in the short term.”

It seems that everyone in general and no one in particular holds the general misconception to be fact. That being that the Iranian people have a say in their everyday affairs. This is patently offensive and wholly untrue. They are living under one of the most repressive regimes on the planet. (I feel compelled to mention that the people of Saudi Arabia are under an even more oppressive thumb.) To think that we can spend and wish our way into their hearts and minds is to ignore history, and is folly.

The hope of OUR way of life lies in showing these people, until now helpless and hopeless, that our way of life is truly better; better for the individual and better for the people as a whole.

Unless and until we do this, we are always going to be fighting an uphill battle.

We have the winning philosophy; we have yet to win its acceptance as the winning philosophy.

When we can make a difference in the everyday lives of the tribesmen, warlords, and various small-office powerholders, then we will be able to have a concrete influence on the ground.

God bless our troops who are every day fighting this fight, and God Damn those who are standing in their way.

Bush never understood this, which I think is one of his biggest failures as president. I hope McCain and company wise up.

I agree. One of Bush’s weakest points was media and communication.

Tony Snow helped in this area, but far too briefly. I wistfully wonder what having Snow succeed Ari as Press Secretary, and still being there, would have been like.

Let there be no doubt about who it is we are facing, and about the extent of the anti-American sentiment festering out there in the real world.

There are always going to be jealousies which lead to hatred of the US. But to give substance to these philosophies is to oppose your own nation and all that it stands for.

It would be wonderful if the whole world could hold hands and sing Kumbaya, but that is not the world in which we live.
