In the tank: Worshipping media to follow Obama around the world; Update & Bump: AOL Hot Seat Poll

posted at 11:50 am on July 19, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Hillary Clinton’s campaign complained loudly that the media treated Barack Obama like a rock star instead of a presidential candidate.  Saturday Night Live made itself relevant for the first time in a generation by skewering the love affair that the mainstream media had with Obama, finally embarrassing them into asking a few tough questions of Obama — after more than a year.  Now, with Obama embarking on his world tour, all three broadcast networks will have their anchors trailing him, apparently hoping to record every bon mot that escapes from his lips:

Senator John McCain’s trip to Iraq last spring was a low-key affair: With his ordinary retinue of reporters following him abroad, the NBC News anchor Brian Williams reported on his arrival in Baghdad from New York, with just two sentences tacked onto the “in other political news” portion of his newscast.

But when Obama heads for Iraq and other locations overseas this summer, Williams is planning to catch up with him in person, as are the other two evening news anchors, Charles Gibson of ABC and Katie Couric of CBS, who, like Williams, are far along in discussions to interview Obama on successive nights.

And while the anchors are jockeying for interviews with Obama at stops along his route, the regulars on the Obama campaign plane will have new seat mates: star political reporters from the major newspapers and magazines who are flocking to catch Obama’s first overseas trip since becoming the presumptive nominee of his party.

CBS tried to explain this away by underscoring the novelty of the trip. Paul Friedman, senior VP of CBS News, said that if this were John McCain’s first trip to a war zone, the networks would cover it similarly. Unfortunately for Friedman, that’s demonstrably false. McCain has traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan, both before and after announcing himself as a candidate for the Presidency, and the networks mostly ignored his trips.

And this is not Obama’s first trip abroad, and not his first trip to a war zone.  He visited Iraq in January 2006, when rumors had already begun to swirl about his burgeoning presidential ambitions.  In fact, Obama spent more on travel than any other freshman Senator in the 109th Congress.  He racked up over $28,000 in bills for his junkets, which included stops in Israel, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Kenya, and South Africa.   The biggest question is why he didn’t travel to Afghanistan during this period, since he had a subcommittee chairmanship on US-European relations, which covers NATO and the mission in Afghanistan.  Of course, he still hasn’t held a meeting of his committee on this topic.

Here’s a video on this subject we posted last month:

So the news media can’t even claim novelty when explaining this effort.  When was the last time we saw any network anchor doing a remote, let alone all three at the same time?  Not even the Iraq War merited it after the first elections in 2004-5, and I don’t believe that involved all three anchors at any time.  Afghanistan hasn’t merited it.This is nothing more than the media fawning over Obama, and looking to give him as much earned media as they can.  Their pretense of objective reporting has been ripped away, and the media looks like little more than groupies vying for the attention of a pop star, hoping that some of his popularity rubs off on them.  This should embarrass journalists, but instead they’re busy rationalizing their utter lack of self-respect.  (via The Anchoress)

Update: I bumped this to the top as AOL used this post for today’s Hot Seat poll.

…they’re busy rationalizing their utter lack of self-respect.

If they keeep working at it, perhaps their level of self-respect will sink to the level of respect I have for them, but I suspect they have quite a ways to go.

The Snake Oil Tour.
Lovely.

He won’t debate McCain here but his apparent rock star status demands a world tour. I reckon that he aims to organize a neighborhood overseas. Obama is about three steps above his level of competency.

He can add international diplomacy to his exagerated resume.

They might as well put Obama 08 bumper stickers on their news trucks. This has reached the laughable stage.

canopfor on July 17, 2008 at 8:48 AM

This is disgusting. Everybody remember that trip to Africa Bush took where the anchors covered his messages about America needing to help the third world? Yeah, neither do I.

I disagree that this is “groupie” behavior. This is out and out media bias and being in the tank (possibly paid?) for one candidate. If this had been for any Republican you’d be hearing it on every channel, every internet forum about how the media is in the tank and controlled by big money and corporations. But you won’t hear peep one from the ACLU crowd about this.

THIS. THIS is the end of America as I know it.

The only silver lining is, it will make it very difficult for them to ignore any screw-ups on his part as well as the conditions in Iraq.

This would be the perfect time for the Iraqi people to hold a pro-American mass demonstration….

TheBigOldDog on July 17, 2008 at 8:51 AM

Now, wait a minute, folks! These people are doing our future generations a huge favor in doing this. How else will they know for certain how the Obamassiah talked, looked, and thought(or belched, or farted, or sneezed, or…)? I mean, just look at how a insignificant minority within the Religion of Peace think that Mohammed actually said to kill all the Jooos…

dmh0667 on July 17, 2008 at 8:53 AM

At what point does journalistic integrity erode to propaganda standards? When the credibility of the MSM ceases to exist, is it a good time for a good old American backlash to rear it’s ugly head?

volsense on July 17, 2008 at 8:54 AM

Watch them. There won’t be any even when there are. You forget how much the media was in the tank for Clinton when he tried a PR campaign for a WW2 memorial service in France. They did a whole staged photo op session that the media dutifully reported as Bill Clinton being reflective on the beach, Bill Clinton showing piety by planting a flag at a grave.

It was Rush that pointed out that the beach walk had been photo-op planned to get just the right scene so the shadow of an aircraft carrier was visible in the background. It was Rush that pointed out that ALL of the graves had American flags except for the one Clinton was planting (they had taken it DOWN so Clinton could put it back up).

theblacksheepwasright on July 17, 2008 at 9:00 AM

As far as Obama bouncing around on his positions the MSM won’t pay it any attention. It will be about how love is in the stars. Between London, Paris, Berlin, Ramallah, Baghdad, and Kabul the MSM will demonstrate that Obama will make America the world’s favorite stepchild again.

It will be up to our own pamphleteers to get the word out.
The right better pull up it’s pants before those same pamphleteers are silenced.

disgusting

JustTruth101 on July 17, 2008 at 10:10 AM

What will be really funny is if the Obama crew pulls some Amateur Hour stunt on the trip, a la Nancy Pelosi’s foolish venture into diplomacy last year with the Syrians, and the anchors and their networks end up have traveled all that distance only to have to spin away what Obama says or does for the American viewing public.

jon1979 on July 17, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Obama is quite simply dodging debates with McCain and attempting to qualify as an International kinda guy.
Phony SOB. Period.

old trooper on July 17, 2008 at 10:46 AM

The “groupie” tag is one people need to stick with. Nothing will infuriate the self-important anchors more than being forever more known as “groupies.” Can I wipe your brow, Mr. O? Do you want me to remove the green M&M’s from the bowl? Can I adjust your lapel mic?

J_Gocht on July 17, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Obama visiting Iraq is just too big an event to be handled by the current anchors. Bring back Gunga Dan!

I don’t see why everyone is intimating that this shows the press is biased or something. When Obama himself makes the grand gesture of actually going to Iraq in person, putting his personal self out there, that’s obviously news. When McCain lamely imitates him, in advance, by doing the same thing before he did, multiple times, that’s obviously just politics as usual, and not worthy of coverage.

Splunge on July 17, 2008 at 11:55 AM

As this campaign proceeds, I am reminded more and more of the role of Chance the gardener played by Peter Sellers in the movie “Being There”. Every utterence of this misplaced gardener was conflated into words from an oracle.

As Wikipedia describes the character:
“His simplistic, very serious and indeliberate utterances, which mostly concern the garden of which he was once steward, are interpreted as allegorical statements of deep wisdom and knowledge regarding business matters and the current state of politics in America…Chance, as Chauncey Gardiner, quickly rises to national public prominence. He becomes a media celebrity with appearances on TV talk shows, and is soon on the A-list of the most wanted in Washington society. Public opinion polls start to reflect just how much his “simple brand of wisdom” resonates with the jaded American public.”

The movie ends with a shot of Chance walking on water…

I’m sure the network heads are working hard on how to create that shot…

in_awe on July 17, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Haha! Fox should send one of their top reporters to follow the press following Obama. The reporter should make his traveling story entirely about them and expose their fawning sycophantry every night. He could make a big deal about the “historic nature” of all three alphabet networks sending their anchors overseas, discuss what would happen if all three got killed at the same time, question what other news is being ignored so that the Barack-star can get 24/7 coverage, speculate about what John McCain is doing back home, etc. That would be hilarious.

Terrye – where are you?

I just wish I had the knee pad concession with the ObamaMSM. I could be raking in the cash this year! I bet Olby has gone through 5 sets of knee pads by now.

Now that Barack Obama has begun his “Grande Tour” beginning in Afghanistan, accompanied by a planeload of what seems the entire American news media (already, the BBC is complaining that there is no room for them), a flap has arisen over the senator’s planned stop in Berlin. The flap centers around that city’s most famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate.

The Brandenburg Gate is a victory column erected long ago in an age when Germany used to win wars. On January 30, 1933, thousands marched through the gate on their way past the Chancellery to salute Hitler on his appointment as Chancellor. In the post-war era, it straddled the line between East and West Berlin, sitting in “no-man’s land”. It also served as a backdrop for the visits of Presidents Kennedy and Reagan during the Cold War. Reagan stood in front of the gate when he stated, “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” (Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech was actually given at another location in West Berlin.)

Suffice to say, a speaking appearance by Obama at the Brandenburg Gate would have tremendous symbolic meaning. Thus, it was reported this week that the Obama campaign was involved in negotiations with Berlin’s Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, to stage just such a speaking appearance. That unleashed some proper criticism from observers who characterized the choice of location as presumptuous. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was not keen on the idea since it smacked to her of a campaign ploy, which it was.

Besides, what would he say? Put the Wall back up?

So now, it appears in light of reactions that Obama has scrubbed the idea. One of his (reportedly 300) foreign policy aides, Denis McDonough, has now told the press that Obama himself had nixed the idea of the Brandenburg gate. Said, Mr McDonough, “He didn’t think it made sense for him to speak at the Brandenburg Gate, which he thought would be too PRESUMPTUOUS.” (caps mine).

Presumptuous indeed. But no more presumptuous that Obama’s desire to move his convention acceptance speech to Denver’s Investco Field, with its 75,000 seating capacity plus all those adoring young fans that they can flood the field with-kind of like they do at the Superbowl halftime shows.

Nevertheless, Obama can console himself with the knowledge that the American news media is doing its part to help make this trip what is, in effect, a campaign promotion. During the European phase, adoring Europeans will show the American public how much they want this man to be our next president.

Then, when the senator returns home in triumph from his “Grande Tour”, he can choose an American venue for his next big speech-Gettysburg, perhaps.

Haaretz Service, no specific author, no specific source, just wholecloth propaganda:

“The Afghans expressed a readiness to see the end of George W. Bush’s presidency.”

Says who to whom, where and when, regarding what specifically if anything? Did someone simply say that they were ready to accept a new American President, as Bush’s tenure draws to a close?

THERE IS NOTHING TO REPORT REGARDING ANY THREAT TO OBAMA’S SECURITY. It’s all headline, and Drudge is milking it for all it is worth, which is squat.

For the German language challenged here’s Der Spiegel in English. The headline is not the same.

Couric, Gibson and Williams are auditioning to be Obama’s press secretary. Their networks’ news broadcasts will be just Obamasturbation for the Jackass Party. They will ask him no challenging questions. They will not even ask him why he needs an entourage of 300 media-described “foreign policy experts” for this trip.

However, I have a theory – call it the Rodney Dangerfield theory. Dangerfield was in a movie in which he filmed a commercial saying that if you want to look thin, surround yourself with people fatter than you are. Hence, as Obama wants to look intelligent, he must surround himself with those less informed than himself. However, those people may be the news anchors rather than the 300 Obaminators.

Alternately, if Obama needs 300 advisors to inform him of what to say and do on each stop of his trip, it is not inaccurate to describe him as the Obamaton.

That would be hilarious.

aero on July 17, 2008 at 12:01 PM

I agree, aero, that this would have been pure, pure genius, and it would have made their sycophantism the story. It would have been especially funny coming after watching the Fox talking heads all week say to one another: “Did you get invited? No? Me neither. I asked to go, but the Obama people said no.” They could have had a great time with it.

I was going to personally boycott all the major network news coverage of this Glowbama trip, but then I remembered: I haven’t watched a network evening or morning news show for nearly 10 years, so it’s all good.

America kicks our Obama in the ars. Too bad, the black Kennedy…they are racists, after all.

EDDDDDDDDD!!!!!

What the hell kind of answer is that!?

“Yes, it’s unusual.”???

The answer should be, “Of course it indicates bias just like every word out of the mouth of the msm is biased.” or maybe to shorten it up how about, ” DUH!”
