Video: Dan Rather joins Osama/Obama club in style

posted at 11:20 am on July 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

This is my gift of schadenfreude to Hot Air readers today. Yes, many of us have inadvertently exchanged Osama and Obama, to our embarrassment.  However, this may be the first time that anyone on national TV has exchanged “Barack Obama” for the full “Osama bin Laden”.  The speaker makes it all the more delicious, of course:

Hey, I blame Jesse Jackson for a lot of things, but not for paving the way for Osama bin Laden. Will Jesse want to go for Rather’s family jewels over this?

the right wing blogging machine must be crossing Dan’s Kenneth’s frequency wires.

aquaviva on July 18, 2008 at 11:24 AM

What frequency is Dan on?

Hahaha. That’s great.

I loved the ‘reaction’ of the others.

Entelechy on July 18, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Looks like that tin-foil I sent Dan is working.

Limerick on July 18, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Sounds to me like he realized immediately that he said Osama, realized his mistake, and finished with Bin Laden in the hopes no one would take notice.

In the end, he just looks like more of a moron than if he had simply said Osama.

MadisonConservative on July 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM

If a tree falls in the forest will anyone hear it?

Not even a flinch from Barnicle and friends. Very funny

iam7545 on July 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!! I blame those people in their pajamas doing nothing but that new-fangled “blogging.”

mjk on July 18, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Imagine, the nutroots are having their convention…I can’t wait to see this explored, on all sides.

Entelechy on July 18, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Not quite a sequel to his stubborn insistence that Air National Guard pilot George W. Bush went AWOL, even though the documents alleging this have been shown to be forgeries, but a wonder to behold nonetheless.

Bigfoot on July 18, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Dan should know how to immediately correct a blunder like that. And why didn’t Barnicle step up and cover for his fellow leftista?

Somebody should have put a fake script up for Dan…

originalpechanga on July 18, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Courage.

HBowmanMD on July 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM

Sweet. I almost felt sorry for Dan watching that. For like a nanosecond.

OK, not really.

flipflop on July 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM

Dan’s obviously part of the VRWC.

He covered up Bush’s going AWOL by distracting us with laughable forgeries.

Now he’s libeling Obambi.

misterpeasea on July 18, 2008 at 11:41 AM

Talk about ‘9/11: chicken coming home to roost’, I didn’t know the proverbial chicken roosting under Jesse Jackson.

Maybe I should take a second look at the guy.

I have a great respect for Jessie Jackson…he was an important figure in paving the way for Osama bin Laden to appear

Read this a few times. Forget Obama, just read the statement.

It’s a beautiful mornin’. Sing along.

Entelechy on July 18, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Did any of those two people correct him after the 21 seconds of that video? I would be nice to see that as well.

Ed Morrissey on July 18, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Wow, that’s the hardest I have laughed in weeks!

12thman on July 18, 2008 at 11:54 AM

Hey, Rather is just coming into his own. He doesn’t deserve the obscurity of part-time opinionating. Give him his CBS anchor job back.

Dusty on July 18, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Rather…what a tool.

Smooth Rooster on July 18, 2008 at 11:57 AM

Did any of those two people correct him after the 21 seconds of that video? I would be nice to see that as well.

wise_man on July 18, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Nope. Nobody corrected him — they just let it go and presumably hoped no one would notice.

On the other hand, Rather’s bonafieds with the left, and his obvious declining faculties, means he’s not going to get hammered by this. Media people were already looking away in embarrassment when he filed that suit against CBS last year trying to claim there was nothing wrong with his Bush-National Guard story, while Ted Kennedy three years ago bounced the Osama/Obama thing around to the point he sounded like he was trying to sing a new verse of Shirley Ellis’ “The Name Game”, but his liberal credentials were strong enough so that no one on the left ever thought about making an issue out of it.

iam7545 on July 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM

I got the impression that they were entirely unaware of what Rather even said, as if being forced to suffer the ramblings of a doddering old fool out of obligation, without even processing the words coming out of his mouth.

Just killin time to the next commercial break, they could not have cared less about what he was saying. I think Ol’ Danger Dan is even irrelevant to the lefties now.

Fishoutofwater on July 18, 2008 at 12:01 PM

One of my favorite Rather moments was on the first Tuesday of November in 2004 when he almost cried as Ohio went to GWB.

The man is a turd of a human which makes him a great journalist.

jukin on July 18, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Barry is no OBL!

OBL puts together plans that work, anything BArry has on paper is going to fail.

TroubledMonkey on July 18, 2008 at 12:36 PM

I’m a loser
I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

Of all the stories I have won or have lost
There is one story I should never have come across
It was a document in a million, my friend
I should have known it would turn out to be forged in the end

I’m a loser
And I lost an anchorship that was dear to me
I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

Although I talk and I act like I’ve been all around
Beneath this mask I am wearing a frown
My tears are falling like rain from the sky
Is it for my anchorship and myself that I cry

I’m a loser
And I lost an anchorship that was so dear to me
I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

What have I done to deserve such a fate
I realized the document was forged but it was by then too late
And so it’s true, pride comes before a fall
I’m telling you so that you won’t lose all

I’m a loser
And I lost an anchorship that was dear to me
I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

Rather will also announce that he has new documents showing that John McCain’s father arranged for him to be shot down over North Vietnam so that John could be safe from enemy AAA fire.

LimeyGeek on July 18, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Why yes, yes it was. Animated gifs were quite popular back in 1967, it just took a few decades for the technology to filter its way into the civilian world.

Well, maybe OBL is planning to show up at the dem convention. Did you think of that?

come on folks….

Let’s see if you could speak so easily while sitting in your dirty diapers on national TV!

wildweasel on July 18, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Look at the other guests’ reactions. They didn’t even notice because they weren’t listening to him in the first place. They were just nodding and saying, “uh huh.” haha Nobody listens to Dan Rather not anymore.

I’ve been informed though that Dan has the papers proving that Jesse did pave the way for Osama Bin Laden to run for Pres.

Is that tiki “the ny giants are nothing without me” barber? That was funny. When rather, dick button’s playmate in central park until they both got mugged, said obl tiki stopped breathing.

peacenprosperity on July 18, 2008 at 2:17 PM

It’s just un-nerving to see how total nonsense flows smoothly and sincerely from the suave lips of the ‘fake but accurate’ former anchor.
Reminds me of another articulate person, a presumptuous presumptive presidential candidate who can spit out nicely formed horse apples as he twirls and whirls.

LaMonte on July 18, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Man, McCain may have a chance if the MSM would keep on trotting out this dolt on their shows.

Hummer53 on July 18, 2008 at 2:56 PM

And why didn’t Barnicle step up and cover for his fellow leftista?

Barnicle was dreaming about a free Lobster Roll at The Stockyard and getting his Toyota serviced for free at Lexington Toyota.

PS. Jesse Jackson paved the way for Osama bin Laden?
For once I agree with Blather!

Dave Barry did a HILARIOUS takeoff on Dan Rather’s election coverage, getting nuttier and nuttier. At one point, it was something like, “This election is so hard to call – a feel like a man trying to give a frog a haircut with a harmonica.”

mikeyboss on July 18, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Richard Romano on July 18, 2008 at 4:40 PM

If you watch it closely, Tiki caught it but I guess just lets it slide. He was nodding along pretty regularly until the “Osama” moment, then just kind of froze for a few seconds.

I’m certain he heard it, and knew what a gaffe it was. I just don’t think he knew what to do about it.
