Video: Controversial PETA ad not that controversial

Curiously, the only people who seem to think it is are PETA itself and of course Fox News. What’s the issue here? The text at the end takes care of any elitist worries that the public is too dumb to detect satire, and since it’s clearly a goof it’s hard to see them as drawing moral equivalence between teen pregnancy and animal pregnancy the way they once did between pig pens and death camps. Much Little ado about nothing, right?

Imbeciles.
That made me hungry for a cheese steak.
wildweasel on July 18, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Wait…a PETA ad is telling people to castrate animals?
Did I miss something here?
MadisonConservative on July 18, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Desperate.
Wanderlust on July 18, 2008 at 10:54 AM
That line at the end, “my girl’s gonna get some,” actually made me laugh.
Yeah, I don’t have a problem with this at all. People should take care of their pets. It feels cruel, but it’s good for them.
Esthier on July 18, 2008 at 10:55 AM
They sound like typical San Fran parents to me, was this “satire”?
Alden Pyle on July 18, 2008 at 10:58 AM
As far as PSA’s go, it was a good ad.
WoosterOh on July 18, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Actually, it was a pretty good ad. Clearly satire, but got its point across.
amerpundit on July 18, 2008 at 11:00 AM
A somewhat stupid ad which IMHO blurs the important message to spay or neuter pets. PETA tends to use a sledgehammer rather than a tack hammer.
TooTall on July 18, 2008 at 11:01 AM
I like this even better…
PETA Up In Arms Over Army Shooting Pigs
Oink!
For those that don’t survive, when can I expect my delivery of ribs and bacon? I think this is a win-win for the Army.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 18, 2008 at 11:02 AM
I agree that the satire of it all made me laugh. It was pretty mild based on what PETA members actually believe.
Limerick on July 18, 2008 at 11:03 AM
wow, yeah!! that last line was funny…
when and where is this thing airing? I certainly don’t want my 6 year old seeing it.
elraphbo on July 18, 2008 at 11:03 AM
It just confirms that PETA is racist against humans.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 18, 2008 at 11:03 AM
It really wasn’t a terrible ad. I don’t think people generally like to equate their children with pets, but as far as PETA goes, this could have been far more offensive.
jimmy the notable on July 18, 2008 at 11:05 AM
So…we’re to spay and neuter our teen children?
I don’t think they’ll go for that. Lord knows I wouldn’t have as a teen.
ynot4tony2 on July 18, 2008 at 11:08 AM
At least they’re willing to portray a teen as not actually wanting to jump into bed with everything that moves. This is significantly less sleazy than that Democrat sex commercial.
jimmy the notable on July 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM
As much as I detest PETA, I give it kudos. It made me laugh.
What also made me laugh was Bill O’rielly all worked up over it. Yeah Bill, why don’t you show more videos of strippers and hookers on your show. How about more stories about sex clubs and the such. He’ll, even Laura Ingraham thinks Bill gives to much air time to stupid stories relating to sex and porn.
RobertInAustin on July 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM
That ad is very good, anyone who thinks otherwise should be spayed or neutered.
liberrocky on July 18, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Like all advocacy groups PETA can go to extremes some time but I don’t understand the hostility towards them. Some of the issues they raise really should be looked at. For example, I worked at the UCLA Medical Center and was horrified by the animal experiments they’re running less than 100 yards from one of the busiest trauma center emergency rooms in the country. And the real problem is the amount of experiments that go on — with every wannabe doctor or researcher chopping up one caged creature or another — all in the name of keeping the grant money pipeline flowing (not useful science). So it seems to me that if publicly funded institutions are conducting a lot of this animal experimentation questioning whether that money is being wasted on inhumane practices is quite legitimate.
miles on July 18, 2008 at 11:18 AM
That was a good ad and an example of what PETA should be about.
spmat on July 18, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I saw O’Reilly ranting about this last night…I thought he was giving too much air time to nothing…this ad is as harmless as the Trojan pig ad..Lighten up Billy O
JKotthoff on July 18, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Funny.
loganthompson on July 18, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I thought it was hilarious. Nothing controversial about spaying and neutering, and if all satire is to be made with a G rating, we can shovel dirt over the carcass of satire right now.
Ed Morrissey on July 18, 2008 at 11:23 AM
I’m pretty sure that in Act II, they tell her she can have all the abortions she wants….

CapedConservative on July 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM
as the father of two girls, I can say that this is one seriously f’ed up strategy. I am all for the goal of neutering and spaying pets (I have had many animals and all were treated in this manner), but this is not only offensive, but it’s sending the wrong message to kids who might not be mature enough to understand satire, but just may be mature enough to think, “hey, it’s ok to go out and ‘get some’–I think I will!”
PETA goes for shock value, but this is just wrong.
john1schn on July 18, 2008 at 11:42 AM
I’m outraged!
Eh, not really.
flipflop on July 18, 2008 at 11:42 AM
my wife is a vet..
spay and neutering really is the best for your pets..
I thought it was a good add.. surprising considering the source..
Neutering really helps the behavior of some animals as well.. it will help settle a puppy that is trying to hump everything that moves.. kittens with spraying..
and most shelters are overran with dogs and cats anyway so if you are really looking for a new animal, check there first..
my dog was a stray and is the BEST DOG EVER.. (yes he is.. uh huh.. he sure is.. good boy..) but we had to yank the ‘Born To Be Wild’ card and he settled in fine..
DaveC on July 18, 2008 at 11:43 AM
it was good satire..
illustrating one point by an absurd extreme example of another..
DaveC on July 18, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Yeah, despite the potential insanity of the source it’s an effective ad promoting a good message. Go figure.
Blacklake on July 18, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Winner!!
BacaDog on July 18, 2008 at 12:01 PM
I agree with ya AP. I may not agree with the message, but they did a good job presenting the satirical comparison.
I suppose those at PETA who were upset fear the message knocks a leg out from under the pro-abortion crowd who are their kin on PETA’s stand on animal treatment.
Dusty on July 18, 2008 at 12:09 PM
That settles it. If I ever get a cat or dog it gets to run free and I will never spay or neuter it.
NotCoach on July 18, 2008 at 12:13 PM
I actually liked it.
It was funny. And for once, they’re making a good point nobody should disagree with: spay and neuter your pets. Like Bob Barker says.
Oh - and for those who seem a little confused, that’s the point of the ad. That’s the only point. The point is not: make your teen daughter have lots of sex.
If you missed this, you’re a little confused.
For example:
Yeah. Mmm-kay. See, that’s the whole point. It’s supposed to be offensive. Their linking that offensiveness to the idea that taking a similar attitude with your pets is offensive.
That you didn’t get that is, uh, troubling. And if your child truly doesn’t get the point, you failed as a parent.
I’m no
Professor Blather on July 18, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Did Jesse Jackson see this ad before he wanted Obama neutered?
Steve Z on July 18, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Indeed.
If they actually cared about the “ethical treatment of animals,” they’d do more of this. And lose the whole throwing-blood-on-fur bit.
Professor Blather on July 18, 2008 at 12:16 PM
OK, now I’m back from fetching the lint-free cloth to wipe the spray from my poor, beleaguered monitor: “My little girl’s gonna get some!” Oh, great Ghu, that got such a guffaw out of me, I scared the bejebus out of my poor dog (good thing he’s neutered!).
I have zero problem with this ad: it was high-larious, effective, and promoted a message I entirely support. I think parents can put their minds at ease about their kids not catching the satire; even if the sheer attention-grabbing incongruity of what the parents are saying doesn’t make them look for the message behind the words, even if they fail to read the captions and comprehend the point of the spot, then seeing the look on the girl’s face as she gapes, aghast at her parents, will hammer the point home. Seriously, anyone who fails to register the paradoxical intent of this ad is surely operating with a serious cognitive deficiency and should not be viewing any media without careful and constant supervision and debriefing. The only potential complaint I could get behind would be that the whole “If it’s got a pulse, you should be wrapped around it” line, while also hysterical, might be a bit too explicit for younger viewers. Judicious timing of airings should address that bit pretty handily.
I am frankly astonished that something so good actually came from that gang of morally retarded misanthropes.
Oh, dear. Still giggling…
Noocyte on July 18, 2008 at 12:17 PM
SCREW PETA…Eat meat, keep warm, and enjoy life to the hilt.
byteshredder on July 18, 2008 at 12:22 PM
PETA are a bunch of fascist veg-heads…but that ad made me laugh. That last line especially.
It’s just a variation on Bob Barker’s them. Spay or neuter.
Really not that big a deal as far as I’m concerned.

Oh…and I am the father of three girls under 12 and will be eating a big, juicy steak this evening….rare, baby. Oh yeah!
Mistahtibbs on July 18, 2008 at 12:54 PM
So I take it you were one of those people who felt the New Yorker cartoon was offensive since some people are too stupid to get the joke?
Esthier on July 18, 2008 at 1:00 PM
“If it has a pulse, you should be wrapped around it.”
If you didn’t know it was PETA, you’d swear it was an SNL mock commerical.
It’s too funny to be offended by it.
Pcoop on July 18, 2008 at 1:01 PM
I thought it was a good ad. Funny and to the point. I’m no PETA fan, but I have a real problem with people letting their animals breed all over the place and then just dumping the excess in shelters. We’ve bred pets for generations to want human company, and there are a hell of a lot more cats and dogs than good homes for them.
Those of you planning a steak tonight…what the hell do kittens, teen pregnancy and hamburger have to do with each other. Is that just your automatic PETA joke?
S. Weasel on July 18, 2008 at 1:05 PM
I thought it was funny. I am a little bit odd though.
For once, I agree with PETA - spaying/neutering is very important.
LimeyGeek on July 18, 2008 at 1:06 PM
However, the REAL mish-mashing of the ideologies is this:
How does the Left and/or PETA stand on abortions for dogs and cats?????
seanrobins on July 18, 2008 at 1:10 PM
This is tame for our degenerate culture so I can understand why most of you aren’t offended. But I don’t want my kids watching this.
Sex is so “in your face” these days its par for the course.
I saw a sign on the Wendy’s as we drove by last night, “Get Fresh Late”. Come on.
Hendo on July 18, 2008 at 1:13 PM
How does the left and/or PETA stand on sterilization of human ‘undesirables’?
LimeyGeek on July 18, 2008 at 1:16 PM
You are at liberty to live with a bag over your head.
LimeyGeek on July 18, 2008 at 1:17 PM
My neighbors never send Sparky out in the evening without a condom.
whitetop on July 18, 2008 at 1:20 PM
That’s easy: The WORSHIP Margaret Sanger, a racist, xenophobic, commie, who was really into stemming the tide of “undesirables” in the waters of the American genome….
seanrobins on July 18, 2008 at 1:24 PM
Who, by the way, founded Planned (Non)Parenthood
seanrobins on July 18, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Isn’t this pretty old? I seem to remember seeing this quite a while ago.
nailinmyeye on July 18, 2008 at 1:26 PM
T’was what I was alluding to ;) Well spotted!
LimeyGeek on July 18, 2008 at 1:28 PM
PETA is a bunch of freaks, and normally can’t stand them, but on this? Even a blind hog finds a nut, er, acorn once in a while. Good ad.
bikermailman on July 18, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Oh for goodness sake…
Can’t refute what I said so just brush it aside?
Our culture is literally going to the dogs - but this “lets eat and drink for tomorrow we die” kind of attitude will only exacerbate the problem.
I don’t plan on putting a bag over my head, but I’ll do my best to raise my kids properly. Thanks.
Hendo on July 18, 2008 at 1:44 PM
I’m not trying to refute anything, I just want you to get to the point.
“Our”? What a strange use of the concept of possession.
I’m sure your driving will improve as a result.
FINALLY! BINGO! THERE’S THE SOLUTION!
LimeyGeek on July 18, 2008 at 2:06 PM
OK, THE culture is going to the dogs.
I don’t want to claim possession of most of it.
Unfortunately the majority don’t seem to want to do the same. Maybe I just need to stop shopping at WalMart.
Hendo on July 18, 2008 at 3:21 PM
Allah,
You have to post or link to MKH’s anti-PETA “commercial”!!!!!
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 18, 2008 at 3:24 PM
I happen to like this ad. It’s funny and puts it’s point acorss without sounding insane, which is something PETA has a very hard time doing.
LordDaMan on July 18, 2008 at 3:46 PM
It’s a good ad. Fox are upset over it hopefully the publicity will get the message out to pet owners. Around 6 million dogs and cats go unwanted every year.
lexhamfox on July 18, 2008 at 4:54 PM
Bullshit. You know as well as I do that kids at a certain age are more susceptible to persuasion from sources other than their parents.
Maybe you didn’t get my point. I agree with spay/neuter. I disagree with the delivery method. It’s OFFENSIVE and doesn’t belong anywhere where my 11 year old has to see it.
Just like I didn’t want to explain to my other daughter when she was 7 what oral sex was and why the news was discussing it in relation to a sitting president.
Get it now, professor? Sheesh.
john1schn on July 18, 2008 at 8:52 PM
No, I didn’t think that was offensive. Different subject matter. Didn’t you get that?
john1schn on July 18, 2008 at 8:54 PM
Awesome. Hilarious and yet perfectly clear. Love the horrified expression on the daughter’s face.
Ugh, I agreed with PETA and Maureen Dowd in the same week. I need a nap. And perhaps Scotch.
Tanya on July 18, 2008 at 9:08 PM
I totally agree - wrong message to send to kids. But I guess that there are many that place their own need to be “entertained” over the possible damage done to young kids.
