The Audacity of … Arrogance?

Charles Krauthammer writes today that the question in the early part of the electoral cycle was: who is Barack Obama? Now, Krauthammer wonders who Obama thinks he is. Increasingly, Obama has defined himself through arrogance and haughtiness, and Krauthammer says the upcoming Grand Tour of Europe will make it exponentially worse:
Barack Obama wants to speak at the Brandenburg Gate. He figures it would be a nice backdrop. The supporting cast — a cheering audience and a few fainting frauleins — would be a picturesque way to bolster his foreign policy credentials.
What Obama does not seem to understand is that the Brandenburg Gate is something you earn. President Ronald Reagan earned the right to speak there because his relentless pressure had brought the Soviet empire to its knees and he was demanding its final “tear down this wall” liquidation. When President John F. Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate on the day of his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, he was representing a country that was prepared to go to the brink of nuclear war to defend West Berlin.
Who is Obama representing? And what exactly has he done in his lifetime to merit appropriating the Brandenburg Gate as a campaign prop? What was his role in the fight against communism, the liberation of Eastern Europe, the creation of what George Bush the elder — who presided over the fall of the Berlin Wall but modestly declined to go there for a victory lap — called “a Europe whole and free”?
I may have been the only person on the Right who didn’t get hot and bothered by the proposed Brandenburg venue. Yes, Kennedy and Reagan spoke there as Presidents, but the gate had more meaning during the Cold War and when the Berlin Wall still stood. The significance of the Brandenburg Gate as a Cold War front faded as the wall came down and both Kennedy and Reagan accomplished their mission — fortunately for Reagan, while he still lived to see it happen. Had Obama given a speech there, it would have highlighted how mundane Brandenburg Gate has become — and it would have reminded people of why it got that way, and who made it so. Obama would have been overshadowed by the history, not glorified by it.
However, Krauthammer has the main point correct. In ways large and small, Obama has demonstrated arrogance and conceit in ways not before seen in presidential politics. Americans may like their Congressmen and Senators to be arrogant and haughty at times, but not Presidents. They want humble men — or men who at least can act humble — in the White House. Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, and even Bill Clinton understood that much. George W. Bush learned that lesson from his father’s failed re-election campaign — those seen as elitist don’t survive, even when the charge was unfair, as it was with Bush 41.
The column hits the big data points — the ersatz presidential seal being the most revealing of those he mentions. But he missed one to which I think most Americans related instantly. Obama went to San Francisco to raise money in April, and regaled Billionaires Row with his interpretation of the meaning of religion and the Second Amendment among heartland voters, whom he knows not at all:
But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
He fed into the elitist opinion that God only exists for people when the State fails, and that the State can replace God when it succeeds in controlling everything else — and, of course, only when Obama runs the State. What could possibly be more arrogant than that? Next to that kind of arrogance, Brandenburg Gate has as much significance as Coney Island as a venue for a speech.

I’ve been seeing for some time that for most of Obamas supporters, things like experience or policy or even competence count for very little. It’s only about Obama and the fact that supporting him makes them feel all warm and tingly inside. Now it seems that experience and policy and competence don’t matter to Obama- he deserves to be president, damn it!

I wouldn’t mind BHO’s arrogance so much if it weren’t for the fact that he is the dumbest person I have ever seen in a Presidential race. The dumbest. I have never heard the man say anything intelligent, though idiotic ideas come pouring out of his mouth like they’re going out of style.
I don’t know about others, but I would really love to see BHO’s SATs and LSATs. The idea that this fool (who seems to know nothing of the US Constitution, though that was his concentration at ‘Hahvahd Law’) made it into Hahvahd without the great help of Affirmative Action is laughable.
But I love it when libs still talk about BHO as the “great orator”. The stammerin’ great orator who can’t string together two consistent ideas …

Our Dear Leader Obama (Praise Be Upon Him) has earned the right to receive glowing adulations wherever in the world he pleases. The guy is an arrogant tool - very common among the intellectual left, who have the proud distinction as having carried water for every evil in the 20th and 21st centuries. He’ll be another Carter.
And let this serve as a lesson to us Republicans. We abandoned the path of righteousness and spent a ton of money, had perverts among our Congressional ranks, and failed to provide effective leadership. And now, most probably, Obama (PBUH) will be our next President. Let’s hope he doesn’t do too much damage in his one term.

Ferraro was right. If he wasn’t black, he would be a non-factor. Never in history has a candidate been so uninformed and naive that they would promote him like a marketing shill and expect the people swallow every lie presented, hook line and sinker. The democrats are exploiting the dumbing of America that they created. They will play the race card as it has never been played before.

Barack Obama mirrors nothing more than the pseudo intellectual arrogance displayed by those on the left when describing or addressing conservatives. No surprises there, except that he fails to hide it behind the veil as well as his peers.

If democrats could see how their leaders really see them, there would be no democratic party. The problem Obama has is that he cannot disguise his arrogance towards his followers. Answer “C’est moi” ~ ~ B. Obama
Or, as OldEnglish said in the headlines item on topic - après moi le déluge.
It would have been funny to see him prance around, with Mr. socialist gay mayor of Berlin, at the Brandenburg gate, which I saw from the horrible side during the cold war. Having the gay vote secured at home, it would have awaken the “gun toting, bible thumping” others at home a bit more.
Now they’re going to claim that he didn’t take Michelle O. along, due to security risks. The media are already writing about “security around O.” this, or that. It’s another way to hype his significance and the ‘important’ moment in the world (note, not the U.S.).
To me he’s an empty socialist/Marxist canvas, with hardly any experience, onto whom anything can be painted, who has an anarchyst ambitious wife.
Elitism is indignant, indeed.
Americans are slowy awakening. Their nightmare is stareing at them.
November 2008 will make a lot of people in the world cry.

I’m with you, Ed. I would have liked to have seen him standing there in the shadow of truly great men who delivered actual change and brought real hope to millions, all the while prattling on about his version of hopeandchange which everyone knows is just warmed-over socialism.
I guess “bitterly clinging to religion” is a little more descriptive and somewhat less condescending than “religion is the opiate of the masses.”

We need higher standards for individuals, not a weak common denominator. We need to try and move people up, not encourage them to remain down. This is crazy.
All Obama will do is attemt to institutionalize non-productive behavior and embelish it with endless excuses to explain it away.
The Democratic party is the party of failure.
saiga on July 18, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Krauthammer has nailed it. Obama writes his slogan as “Yes We Can” but the true slogan is “Yes I Can”, and everyone else is just a means to the end–he will rise on the backs of the ignorant and naive, and enslave them once he has their votes.
His wife’s “Barack Obama will require you to work” is telling: who is Barack Obama to REQUIRE anyone to work for him? We are not slaves, we are a free people, and as George Washington said, a President is the SERVANT, not the master, of everyone in the nation. If Obama wants to REQUIRE us to work for him, what will he PAY us?
What has Obama ever really DONE? He says he had “judgment” on Iraq, but McCain’s contrary strategy actually worked. Obama spent years in the Illinois Senate earmarking money to developers of tenements, which are bankrupt and falling in ruins according to the Boston Globe. He was supposedly such a great “community organizer”, but those “communities” are still as disorganized as ever, and Obama takes credit for work others have done. He claims credit in political ads for passing laws he either opposed or never bothered to vote on.
Thomas Edison said that his inventions were the result of 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration. Obama is the Five Percent Solution.
McCain had better run lots of ads about Obama’s real record, so we’ll find out on November 5 whether “The Ego Has Landed”…or crashed.

Obama the Younger is not familiar with that term. Merit is earned through noble accomplishments. While he may act as nobililty, he has accomplished far less than what the rest of us have by the time we were twenty five years old.

The guy is an empty suit for certain but the most striking aspect of his personality and intelligence is his total lack of understanding about pretty much any significant issue. I have no idea if Obama is actually dumb (by IQ standards) but his inability to recognize the correlation between action and consequence on important issues makes him the most frightening prospect as President . . . ever.
JonPrichard on July 18, 2008 at 11:53 AM
What Obama and Pelosi and Democrats do not understand is that when you actually solve problems - THEY GO AWAY so you can move on to the next pressing issue of the day. Republicans tend to fix (and end) problems, Democrats like to keep the problems (and victims) around so they can justify their own existenc to keep working on the problem (and maintain a loyal voting block). The Brandenburg gate represents a problem solved. Its image is historical and would not have much significance for Obama other than trying to resurrect problems that have been solved and do not exist anymore. What better comparison than Reagan winning the Cold War and Johnson/Dems still fighting the war on poverty?

Gonna have to disagreee, here, Cap’n…yeah. If The Lightworker gave a speech at the B-Gate, the press on both sides of the Atlantic would play it up as the biggest and most Lightworker-ish moment in modern history.
There would be NO, repeat NO context added pursuant to what you said.
Do you really think that any network anchor or CNN-ABC-CBS-NBC-BBC-AFP-Der Speigel editor would even MENTION the name of Ronaldus Magnus in connection with The Obama’s speech there??? No effing way. Not ever.
Can you picture Katie Couric or Wolf Blitzer or Mr. Thrill-up-the Leg giving props to Reagan along the lines of: “Hey Obama gave a great speech at the Gate today, but let’s remember how Ronald Reagan worked his ass off for 8 years to bring down the Berlin Wall, and how if Reagan had not shown balls as big as church bells, the Wall might still be up. “ Yeah, me neither.
More likley, the press accompanying The Secular Messiah would be grateful that there was a new Sheriff of Brandenburg, grateful because the press would never again have to mention RR or credit him with anything.

You win, well done! Mine was entirely too glib; a spur of the moment wise asse response.
I’m looking forward to additional cutting edge political design from you. I shall attempt to use better response judgment, in the future?
Really!

I can’t wait to hear the media accompanying him note that he cannot speak the languages of Europe, and contrast that with his speech about our need to teach kids Spanish.
What’s that you say? They won’t bring it up?
Nevermind….

If someone hasn’t said it already, here’s where you’re missing it. The Brandenburg Gate issue is symptomatic of Obama’s arrogance–just as much as the faux presidential seal was–and it is, therefore, highly significant as an indicator of the way O thinks of himself. JFK spoke there, Reagan spoke there, so, of course, the great O should speak there. People won’t remember that Berlin is no longer two cities or that Germany is no longer two countries. What they’d remember is that O spoke there just like the Great Ones….and that was what he was counting on.

Baldy, olde boye, bothe you and I know he won’t be speaking there.
What I do know is… President Obama will be one of the “Great Ones”…!
Your words…and mine!

If he is fact finding, that may be legal. If he is campaigning on taxpayer funding then he is accepting public funding and that is another thing entirely. The MSM will give him hours of free airtime.

Damn… “old trooper” the Big O isn’t accepting any taxpayer financed money for his campaign.
Where have you been?

I read all this and wholeheartedly agree, and it seems so obvious this guys is the “Emperor with no clothes”…then I realize that there are like 60 million people who have swallowed him whole…ugh…
