Olbermann: I never said Hillary should think about getting out of the race

posted at 6:00 pm on July 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

Time for another of those magical moments, all lovingly compiled by Olby Watch, when our hero makes an assertion so easily disprovable that commentary isn’t even needed. Just laying it side by side with the evidence, like handing a photo of the planet taken from space to a flat-earther, is enough to do the trick.

Does he really not remember the big finish to his Pretty Vicious Rant about Hillary’s assassination comments? His faux-rage facial contortions were magnificent that night. Click the image to watch.

Chakra Hammer on July 18, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Nut graf (boy, I’ll say):

Olbermann:
This, Senator, [Hillary's RFK reference] is too much because a senator, a politician, a person who can let hang in mid-air the prospect that she might just be sticking around, in part, just in case the other guy gets shot has no business being, and no capacity to be, the President of the United States.

“No business being, and no capacity to be, the President of the United States.”

But that doesn’t mean he was suggesting she drop out. Nah.

Sheesh.

SteveMG on July 18, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Let me reiterate:

Keith Olbermann is a dick.

franksalterego on July 18, 2008 at 6:11 PM

Mazztek on July 18, 2008 at 6:14 PM

I find Obly as amusingly moronic as much as the next guy, but this clip claims to make a point that it doesn’t make. It never shows him telling Hillary to drop out of the race, which is probably why he singled out that point of all of those mentioned by Wallace to rebut.

DaveS on July 18, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Does this commentator from YouTube have point about the video:

lol, this vid is full of phail.

In the first example, he was characterizing what his guest was saying, not suggesting it himself. In the second example, which was completely taken out of context, he was referring Clinton’s reference to assassination and criticizing the notion that it (the possibility of an assassination) was reason to stay in the race.

I’m not sure if these statements were purposefully misrepresented, or there was truly a misunderstanding.

Either way, there was no “lie”.

terryannonline on July 18, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Yes, the commenter has a point.

DaveS on July 18, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Olby is another liberal idiot who was most likely created from one of those chemistry sets we once played with as kids. The chemicals that were supposed to create his brain function were apparently left out of the mix by mistake. The end result is Olby.

Chakra Hammer on July 18, 2008 at 6:10 PM

No, I meant “dick” as in his detective skills.

carbon_footprint on July 18, 2008 at 6:19 PM

I am curious, though, what is the basis on which Olbermann is causing a (perhaps erroneous) observation made by Chris Wallace as a “talking point”. Has there been a chorus of voices accusing Olby of demanding Hillary drop out of the race? I’m not sure that Olbermann actually understands what a talking point is, despite the fact that he himself attempts to be pushing one with the charge leveled at Wallace.

Olbermann just never ceases to amaze me with how dumb of a man he is, and how someone of such limited “gifts” can get his own political commentary show.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that he meant she had “no business” or “capacity to be” President. It’s just a hunch.

And, no… that doesn’t equate to “I demand she drop out of the race,” so drop it.

DaveS on July 18, 2008 at 6:21 PM

olbermann is the Crazy Eddie of journalism.

coldshot on July 18, 2008 at 6:23 PM

DaveS on July 18, 2008 at 6:21 PM

I agree with you. I don’t think he specifically asked for her to get out of the race in these two clips.

terryannonline on July 18, 2008 at 6:25 PM

And, no… that doesn’t equate to “I demand she drop out of the race,” so drop it.

Sorry, you don’t run this site. I’ll post whatever I want pending the approval of the site owners.

Second, someone who says a candidate doesn’t have the “capacity” or has “no business” being President is at the very least implicitly stating that they shouldn’t be running.

If one combines this statement with his full-throated defense of Obama and his equally full-throated criticism of Hillary, it’s safe to assume that he believed that she shouldn’t (at that time) be continuing her run.

SteveMG on July 18, 2008 at 6:25 PM

I believe that person “X” has “no capacity” or “no business” posting here (or trying to post here, et cetera).

Clearly, I am saying that “X” should not be posting here.

One cannot look at Olbermann’s statement above without considering how he spent countless programs defending Obama and critiquing Hillary, often suggesting during the shows that she should – because of the vote – not continue her run.

Context is, in this case, important. This clip – by itself – is defensible (i.e., he’s not asking her to drop out). But his other statements need to be considered.

SteveMG on July 18, 2008 at 6:32 PM

wise_man on July 18, 2008 at 6:54 PM

What do you think Olbermann meant when he said she had “no business” or “capacity to be” President?

Yes, precisely. Just because he didn’t use the words, “You should get out of the race” doesn’t mean that’s not the clear import of what he’s saying. Are people seriously suggesting he meant, “You have no business being president and you’re incapable of being president — but please, by all means, continue on and reach for that brass ring?” Give me a break.

Allahpundit on July 18, 2008 at 6:57 PM

Are people seriously suggesting he meant, “You have no business being president and you’re incapable of being president — but please, by all means, continue on and reach for that brass ring?” Give me a break.

Appparently some are suggesting that.

For Olbermann to claim he never “suggested” that she discontinue her run after saying she has “no business” and/or “no capacity” to be President is absurd.

Particularly since at the time he made the comment one of the major issues was when was Clinton going to drop out of the race.

SteveMG on July 18, 2008 at 6:57 PM

But, since we didn’t leave it there . . . . to those who say the infamous Whizzer didn’t ask her to get out, please comment on the meaning of the word “is.” Cause you’re just that nuanced.

Seems Olby is just taking his cues from The One. If the Messiah can be revisionist about his positions on Iraq, his positions on the surge . . . then why can’t do the same with his positions on Hillary. Wait, that’s pretty disgusting. Sorry.

Sammy316 on July 18, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Olberman isn’t a dick. Keith has just just a continual priapism for Obama that he hasn’t had adequate blood flow to his brain so it understandable that he cannot remember what he says.

Keith could get treatment for his Obama induced priapism, but that involves using a needle to draw out the blood, but that would create a problem for Keith’s love life. Not getting rid of the priapism, but finding a porn star that will waste her needle on him instead of her heroin.

RobertInAustin on July 18, 2008 at 7:14 PM

The pro-Olbermann apologists seem to have selective hearing. His claim was that he never stated explicitly OR IMPLIED Hillary should drop out of the race. He sure did imply she should by clearly claim she has “no business…being the President of the United States.” This is clearly an implication that she should drop out. Take Olbermann’s statement to its logical conclusion and it comes out to “Hillary should no longer run for President” ergo “drop out of the race.”

It’s so clear when you break it down logically.

I think it is clear that he wouldn’t mind if she got out of the race–and maybe even he thinks that she shouldn’t have run to begin with–but that doesn’t equate to saying that she should drop out.

I think Obama has no business being president. I think he is an incapable moron. I will simply vote against him. My feelings about him do not translate to anything more, I don’t think he should drop out, etc. If we start attributing potential but unspoken implications (which we read from our own perspectives) of a statement to the person who made that statement, we are going down a ridiculously slippery slope.

Wallace’s point would have been better made if he had left this bit out, because the sentiment was spot on.

Look I am no Olbermann apologist. I’ve watched a couple of his shows and don’t care for the man. However, just because I don’t like him it doesn’t mean I’m going to automatically assume he’s lying in this situation. In the first clip he is obviously not asking Hillary to leave. The second clip I admit is more ambiguous. I can see where one conclude that.

Yes, but watch the clip. He purports to be addressing Hillary directly in that segment, in a rage about her behavior. The gist of what you’re saying is, “I don’t like Obama, but he hasn’t done anything to disqualify himself.” Olbermann’s saying, “I don’t like Hillary, and she HAS done something disqualifying. She’s behaved heinously.”

Allahpundit on July 18, 2008 at 7:52 PM

“I don’t like Hillary, and she HAS done something disqualifying. She’s behaved heinously.”

Yeah, but we are talking about a guy who has a segment called “Worst person in the world”. Accusing people of heinous acts (where most people would merely politely disagree) is sort of his shtick, and when he means to call on somebody to resign or drop out etc he typically says it pretty explicitly.

I don’t think reading between the lines too much with anything he says is typically a wise thing to do. :-)

Liberals, like the ‘Oy’ boy… are incapable of decerning reasoning. He makes statement, A; observer concludes statement a means B; objects to statement meaning B; ‘Oy’ boy rejects B as having never said it. He’s right. Observer is right. Liberals are literal thinkers, which is kind of a pathetic excuse for trying to appear intelligent. They cannot comprehend the consequence of what they say. SO when they are called on that consequence they object to never having said it. It is a lot like literal reading of anything else. Nevermind what they words mean. Superficial ignorance is bliss.
