Gaffemaster Alert: The Pearl Harbor Bomb; Update: Video added

Barack Obama must have gone off script again in West Lafayette, Indiana on Wednesday. When addressing the crowd on national security, Obama mangled the attack on Pearl Harbor. For a Hawaii native, this tops the Young Gaffer list of historical fumbles (via Dean Barnett):
But it is wonderful to be back in Indiana. In a few moments, we’ll open up the discussion. But I want to offer a few comments about some of the emerging threats that we face in the 21st century and offer some ideas about how we can face those threats.
Throughout our history, America’s confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world.
Just to clarify: a whole lot of bombs fell on Pearl Harbor. And the threat wasn’t the bomb, it was the empire that sent massive waves of planes to drop them on our Pacific Fleet. Those bombs fell because we didn’t adapt to the threat, and in fact we kept telling ourselves that we could talk the Japanese out of their policy of aggression and empire. We came within a few aircraft carriers of losing the Pacific out of our willful blindness to the nature of the Japanese.
The same can be said for the “nuclear annihilation” Obama also mentions. The threat wasn’t nuclear annihilation as such; that was part of the threat, not the entire threat itself. The real threat came from another kind of empire, one that wanted to conquer from within as well as without — and the American Left after 1969 spent most of its time arguing that the threat didn’t really exist, that Soviet Communism wanted peaceful coexistence, and that socialism and Communism were the achievement of Utopia. After Jimmy Carter’s disastrous cheek-kissing with Leonid Brezhnev and the invasion of Afghanistan that followed, America woke up and put adults in charge – and within a decade, the Soviet Union collapsed of its own contradictions and rot.
This gaffe goes beyond placing Auschwitz and Treblinka in western Germany or putting American troops in Poland during World War II. It speaks to a fundamental superficiality of Obama, a man who seizes tropes and themes with little understanding of their significance or their details. Obama reveals himself as a man who doesn’t understand threats at all, and whose instinctive responses would make them far worse.
Update: Here’s the video; the stumble comes in the first moments. Note the long pause as Obama talks about the bomb at Pearl Harbor. It looks like he went off script:

I don’t know. It could be a simple thing as leaving his ’s’ off bombs. Surely he watched Ben Affleck in Pearl Harbor.

It looks like he was fumbling to find his place when he said that line. Then it looks like he half-realized he hadn’t read it correctly, but for some reason decided to move on with the speech.
I think you’re making a wee bit of a mountain out of a molehill.
I eagerly await everybody’s outrage at my giving him a half pass on this.
Dave Rywall on July 18, 2008 at 10:18 AM
I hate Obama as much as any other sane person but gimme a friggin break. He forgot an “s”!. He should be mocked for it mercilessly like Bush is for everything he says but this whole thing is retarded. There’s plenty of Obama literature from which to draw out his disastrous foreing policy ideals. Harping on this isn’t one of them.
Darth Executor on July 18, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Think the left would give McCain the benefit of the doubt over this? He incorrectly named an Islamic faction, quickly corrected his statement, and was still attacked.
And we’re talking about the same Obama who claimed 10,000 people died in a storm that killed 12, claimed to visit 57 states, said he wants to meet with the President of Canada, and claimed his uncle liberated a concentration camp he never did.
amerpundit on July 18, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Dave Rywall, you get a pass. The foreign advisor, one of 300 that follow O. around, will get counseled.
Obama himself is still an empty canvas, with no experience and not much knowledge.

We came within a few aircraft carriers of losing the Pacific out of our willful blindness to the nature of the Japanese.
We came even closer than that. The planned-for but unlaunched 4th attack wave was meant to destroy the port facilities at Pearl. Had that attack gone off as planned and worked as planned, the closest functioning drydock would have been at Bremberton, Washington. The rest of the war in the Pacific would have had a much different tone.
Instead, the facilities at Peal remained intact, and they where able to rush the Yorktown back into the fight at Midway.
I R A Darth Aggie on July 18, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I think that’s the big point here. Whether or not Obama left an “s” off “bomb” or not, America didn’t “adapt” (whatever the hell that means) when Americans were threatened: we used military force to protect our people. Too bad Obama doesn’t understand the parallel for today’s war on terror.
Yossarian on July 18, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Imagine if Bush said this…
WisCon on July 18, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Excellent point. The left is going to say “he only forgot a letter” when they wouldn’t stop about the fact that Quayle only added one?
amerpundit on July 18, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Man, they can’t be paying you enough for as hard you’re working to attack Obama.
Him leaving the “s” of bombs =
It speaks to a fundamental superficiality of Obama, a man who seizes tropes and themes with little understanding of their significance or their details. Obama reveals himself as a man who doesn’t understand threats at all, and whose instinctive responses would make them far worse.
And because Obama said we faced nuclear annihilation during the Cold War, suddenly we didn’t! I’m sure my parents will feel silly for all those duck and cover drills they did.
Just a head-shakingly hackish post.

Blasphemy! The messiah doesn’t gaffe…silly peons… We mustn’t put so much faith in historical fact, come to think of it, we should demand an immediate congressional panel to investigate this.
Truth is: I have to laugh at this, otherwise the terrifying fact that this self-serving jacka$$ is close to being our president causes therapy inducing depression.

amerpundit on July 18, 2008 at 10:26 AM
I think his speech was stupid. Particularly this line. The Western world has been woefully inadequate in “adapting to threats in an ever-changing world.” Not just the United States. People during the 1930’s thought the Nazis were generally a-okay and their rabid AntiSemitism was just rhetoric (or worse the people actually agreed with the Nazis). Many people thought Communism was an okay system even with the brutal repression of free speech and religion. People underestimated terrorism or dismissed it as something that happened “over there.”
Adapting to a threat after it destroys the World Trade Center, commits massacres against Jews, or destroys entire countries is not exactly a bragging point for anyone.
As for the “bomb” remark, it goes along with the rest of the moronic speech.

What an s-hole!!
exhelodrvr on July 18, 2008 at 10:27 AM
I’m actually impressed and amazed that both Obama and McCain don’t do MORE of these slips, given that they make a speech pretty much every single day.
But making a speech is very different from giving an off the cuff answer. And the off the cuff answers (57 states from Obama, Czechoslovakia from McCain etc etc) are the gaffes people should give a sh*t about, not misreading a teleprompter or a typed speech on a recipe card.
Dave Rywall on July 18, 2008 at 10:27 AM
So Obama is the man for America. How many Americans are as ignorant and vacuous as he is in respect to the history of this country?
God help us all if that clown is elected.

Obama’s long view of history?
You mean the uncut version of ‘1941′?
Limerick on July 18, 2008 at 10:28 AM
My beef is not “the bomb that fell on Pearl harbor” my beef is the lack of understanding of the real threat..the Japanese Empire…the threat is never a single action rather it be the sneak attack on Pearl harbor or the 9-11 attack, rather it is the ultimate goal the action is a step in. Senator Obama does not seem to get that basic fact.
JKotthoff on July 18, 2008 at 10:28 AM
“The bomb” that fell on Pearl Harbor? Give me a BREAK! Sounds like he was talking about Japan, not Pearl Harbor. Does he even know what century we’re in?
He has made too many of these gaffes for it to be coincidental. Any moderate student of history wouldn’t have said that.
Amy Proctor on July 18, 2008 at 10:29 AM
My theory at this point is that Fauxbama is an idiot savant with Constitutional theory his forte. It’s amazing to me how stupid this guy really is. McCain is going to wipe the floor with him during the debates…He should be checked for an aural teleprompter before the debates, or catch the signal and broadcast it so everyone knows the wizard is behind the curtain and is an empty suit……..
adamsmith on July 18, 2008 at 10:29 AM
A mistake of not saying, “bombs?” maybe but why would you write/read, “bombs that fell on Pearl harbor…” rather than, “the attack on Pearl harbor..,” which is how it is nearly always referred?
TheBigOldDog on July 18, 2008 at 10:30 AM
I think it’s neat how people can translate his speeches.
Oh, he meant to say 47 states and not 57…he meant to say bombs and not bomb…when he said that people get bitter and cling to guns or religion he meant that…er…uhhhh…
Hope and Change!
I guess everyone should stop picking on him…apparently it doesnt matter what he says, just what he meant.
Should save a lot of time for bloggers.

As the video shows, this was just a matter of misspeaking. It doesn’t reflect Obama’s knowledge of history or his ability to react to threats. If you want to make fun of him for misspeaking here, fine.
And Quayle’s gaffe was pretty big as far as gaffes go. Misspelling potato in and of itself is not a big deal. But he just didn’t misspell potato… he was a judge of a spelling contest and corrected a middle-school kid who had spelled it correctly.
Tom_Shipley on July 18, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Normatively Dave is on the opposite side of any position I stake, but here, I believe, he’s correct. I think he probably meant “bombs” and was trying to illustrate the many and varied threats we as a country have faced.

So once again Barry O proves he can’t perform without a script. Instead of voting for him maybe we ought to be voting for his speech writer. If you can’t think on your feet, even when you notice an obvious mistake in either your prepared text or once the words leave your mouth, then I certainly don’t want you making decisions that affect the lives of 300 million Americans, illegals included.
Just A Grunt on July 18, 2008 at 10:35 AM
It’s becoming clear that Obama just doesn’t know history. And I’m not talking about little stuff either. He didn’t know where Auschwitz was. He obviously had no clue as to the significance of a “unified Jerusalem”. And these civilian hopenchange enforcement group things he mentioned recently? He doesn’t know how scary that sounds? Well it is to anyone who’s familiar with history. And now this. Maybe it was just a little slip-up this time, but the whole package makes me more and more nervous about this guy.

But since you are both here, help me out. See my plea above, can you name a single subject on which this buffoon has demonstrated even the slightest competance?
Let me list the ones in which he is rapidly becoming infamous for his ignorance and inability:
- speaking without a script, which is ironic because making speeches seems to be his only talent,
- economics (my high school daughter could spend the next year teaching him things he doesn’t know),
- national defense, about which he not only knows nothing, but seems hell-bent on refusing to learn,
- history, naturally, since it isn’t talk at Columbia or Harvard any more.
Hey, maybe he spent his college years learning how to be black. I’ll bet his 35 years of Black American History Month have made an impression. Maybe like my daughters, he was taught that Harriet Tubman was the most important figure in American history…

Not really. When my mother was in school, “potatoe” was taught as a variant of “potato.” I can’t say that was the case for Quayle, but I do believe it is safe to say that many of the people sniggering at him had their own spelling difficulties–Quayle’s were just an opportunity to mock him and feel smug.
Regardless, my concern about Obama is his profound shallowness. I have a tremendous appreciation for language, and the ability to speak beautifully is wonderful, but one must also actually say something.

A lot of people who experience affluence and freedom their entire lives end up pretty shallow. It’s a bit of a leap to see beyond the end of one’s nose, and he hasn’t done it yet. They can’t imagine a bomb dropping on their house or a Great Depression robbing their family of a life.
Barry ought to read more history and skip the Chomsky.

Tom_Shipley on July 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM
Perhaps he was referring to the ‘bomb’ that fell on Japan (Hiroshima/Nagasaki – 2 bombs) as America’s final and conclusive response to Pearl Harbor.
Dan Quayle was given the incorrect spelling from the spelling bee organizers (he read from the card given him) and yet the situation was treated as if the officials in a spelling bee determine the accepted spelling based on their own knowledge, without any backup or references? One of the most unfair and irresponsible setups in recent history.

After having listened to this speech, some parts several times, the Pearl Harbor screw up was the least offensive thing he said. He is either making outright falsehoods, or
is even more ignorant of history and current events that previously thought.
But, the speech wasn’t for educated people. It was for the kind of people who left comments at YouTube. Did they even listen to the words that came out of his mouth? He claims he will do the things the Bush administration has been doing. Except Obama was more hawkish. If Bush had said these words, the left would have gone nuts, claiming he wants to destroy the world.

Oh crap. That’s huge. I mean, that’s HUUUUUUUUGE!!!!!!
That affected the course of human history in a way that Bambi’s misunderstanding of Reagan and Kennedy and FDR “talking to our enemies” couldn’t possibly match.
Oh, wait. That’s not a “gaffe.” That’s “cluelessness about how to run foreign policy.”
It’s on par with claiming that getting rid of our nuclear weapons will somehow pressure Iran and N.Korea to abandon their nuclear programs.
And the “raising capital gains taxes to make it fair” idiocy is really not a gaffe either. It’s standard liberal nonsense: taxes really have no effect on peoples’ behavior or the economy, which makes them a great way to redistribute wealth and make life fair.
And his global warmism hypocrisy. Assuming he really swallows that crap, and isn’t just using it as a convenient way to expand the size and power of gummint, he is making the “problem” worse by supporting ethanol, which even leftist idiots admit contributes to global warmism. Again, not merely a gaffe.
But all pale in comparison to Dan Quayle correcting the spelling of a middle-schooler.
Do you think about the things you say before you say them?
misterpeasea on July 18, 2008 at 11:20 AM
In watching the video again, it “appears” that as he’s reading from a script, he realizes/catches that something is wrong (WTF??? What “bomb” dropped on Pearl Harbor?).
Does he stop, see the error in the speech and try to “CHANGE” what’s written?
Nope, nope, nope…Not gonna do it.
It really doesn’t bother me that there’s a missing S (although that ‘extra’ E in Potatoe is etched in the memory of politics).
What I would really love to see, REALLY love to see…a video of Lloyd Bentsen against Quayle during the debates with Obama’s picture superimposed over Quayles.

“Obama has not experienced affluence his entire life.”
Not an affluence of intellect, certainly.
This jackass owns a mansion in Chicago and his wife pulls down $300K per year in a do-nothing, quota hire job.
That’s before the big bucks he made writing his semi-literate books and before he conned idiots out of more than $500 million in campaign contributions.
If Bambi isn’t affluent, then the word should be deleted from the dictionary, as no one is.

Hey, give Barry a break! He probably hasn’t had much sleep lately. /s

Isn’t he black? Welp, still gotta vote for him then on that basis.

Another point…
“…from the oppression of an empire…”
So, we adapted to an empire being oppressed? Shouldn’t that be “oppression by an empire“?
But what do I know? I was never a community organizer.

First, it isn’t a “charge” that Obama doesn’t know American history. The man isn’t on trial for anything (yet). I’m basing my statement on the fact that the man has no depth in his speeches. He doesn’t talk in historical perspective but simply gets up on the podium and puts on his JFK act. Any reference to the founding fathers or past events is superficial at best and often an overly simplistic rendering of a more complex issue.
I’ll gladly retract my statement if you can prove me wrong by pointing out where Obama has ever demonstrated a meaningful understanding of this nation’s past. And as for being a Harvard grad, that doesn’t mean squat in this context beyond the fact that he spent time in Boston. Many a dim bulb are Ivy League grads.

We did not face nuclear annihilation in the cold war. We faced a communist empire that intended replace out way of life with theirs. The enemy had proven they would use any means possible, including assassination, infiltration, sabotage, funding political front groups within or arming rebel armies. They took out weaker nations directing all their wealth toward ending liberty. They had nukes and we had to match them. The leader who bragged ‘we will bury you’ put nuke missiles in Cuba and I watched Adlai Stevenson on tv stand up to their blackmail. The air raid drills were real, but it was the black rotted soul of communism we were fighting.
It is the big lie of the leftists in the West that nukes, not communism were the problem. This is the liberal mind that describes an SUV getting out of control and killing people, or that insists cigarettes killed their parent. Liberals believe that limiting access to objects will prevent people from hurting themselves or others. There is always another object to blame because of our excessive freedoms
To leftists the cold war was a silly game of chicken. The people trying to jump electric fences, or risking machine gun fire to bolt for the border were not running from nukes. The gulags were filled with the human waste pulp who were not put there by bombs. The refugees were trying to get to our country, with all its nukes. Why?
Not a mistake on their part. That is the liberal mind working

like his “57 state”gaffe, this is the result of him being raised in indonesia – and him being a pothead in high school/college.
he knows sh*t.

Won’t be noticed by the MSM.
nazo311 on July 18, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Yea but I saw some of the revisionist Tripe on PBS and it said that we were as bad as the Nazi’s by collaborating with Stalin and by dropping lots of bombs during the war… Maybe this threw Barry off stride some being shocked to hear this about his country…being the patriot that he is and all (sarcasm now off!)

Limerick,
I think I broke into an artesian well of cynicism since it has become clear that the west has no intention/capability of understanding the enemy, let alone beating him.
I hope this cynical Cassandra is wrong.

I understand the presumptive presumptuous presidential candidate Senator Obama [Peace Be Upon His Name] is headed to Germany — you know, that place where we still have troops after sixty years. Maybe they will give him an honorary title and he will become Barack von Der Gaffe…
LaMonte on July 18, 2008 at 11:35 AM
You guys can make all the lists you wish. I don’t care about most gaffes, if you overlook both sides’.
On this one, “the 57 states” no way. If a guy who runs for President of the U.S.A. doesn’t know how many states his country has, no excuse will convince me. No amount of tiredness and no “esplaining’ of any kind will do.

A zero trying to be a one.
Akzed on July 18, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Fair enough. You seem solidly convinced in your opinion of such gaffes. I’m not really trying to persuade you otherwise; I’m just throwing out my viewpoint – for what it’s worth.
I’ll also throw out another suggestion – that (on aggregate) people will view those that have nothing better to do than dwell on such things, as pointless twats.
