Obama “infuriated” at conservatives for criticizing his wife; Update: Washington GOP goes after Michelle

We’ve been through this before but there’s a precious bit in the new Glamour piece that demands quoting. Every time he breaks his arm patting the left on the back for its supposed civility, I find myself perversely wishing Cindy McCain would say something nutty and trigger a hypocrisy supernova as they all pile on.

GLAMOUR: An AP poll shows that while the positive ratings on Michelle are higher than those of Cindy McCain, her negative ratings are higher as well. I’m curious about how as a husband that makes you feel. Does it mystify you? And what do you want to say to those Americans who don’t know the woman that you know?

SENATOR OBAMA: It’s infuriating, but it’s not surprising, because let’s face it: What happened was that the conservative press—Fox News and the National Review and columnists of every ilk—went fairly deliberately at her in a pretty systematic way…and treated her as the candidate in a way that you just rarely see the Democrats try to do against Republicans. And I’ve said this before: I would never have my campaign engage in a concerted effort to make Cindy McCain an issue, and I would not expect the Democratic National Committee or people who were allied with me to do it. Because essentially, spouses are civilians. They didn’t sign up for this. They’re supporting their spouse. So it took a toll. If you start being subjected to rants by Sean Hannity and the like, day in day out, that’ll drive up your negatives.

She’s not a “civilian” if she’s out on the trail promising that you’re going to immanentize the eschaton, champ. Riddle me this: How is Michelle O any more or less of a “civilian” than Jeremiah Wright, whom Obama concedes is fair game and a “legitimate issue” per their relationship? Wright’s not delivering campaign speeches on Obama’s behalf and surely his views, while arguably a proxy for some of Obama’s own, aren’t as reliable a proxy as Michelle’s. The point in criticizing her isn’t to go after the opponent’s wife for the sport of doing it, it’s to highlight what may or may not be an insight into the opponent himself. It’s really an attack on him, in other words — a dumb attack, since it lets him appeal to women voters by playing the angry husband, but an attack on him all the same.

Update: Looks familiar.

Is it just me or is Obama always mad about something that is offensive to him? Maybe America is offensive to him.

Glamour! What a libtard…when will people start making him out to be the joke that he is? People won’t vote for a president who is a laughingstock…we really need to show him for the joke he is. here’, I’ll start it off:

knock knock

eyes yo new president!

knock knock
who’s there?
always
always who?
always know how to say is merci bocu!
(punchline must be said with southern twang)

JustTruth101 on July 17, 2008 at 3:20 PM

I don’t listen to Sean Hannity - I simply read what his wife said about our country and didn’t like it. This woman has everything in her life handed to her on a silver platter and complained about how unfair everything is.

She got into two Ivy League Schools because of the color of her skin and has a cushy, do-nothing job where she gets paid in excess of $300K per year (Diversity Coordinator?).

She should get down on her knees every single day and thank god in heaven she was born here at this time and instead she whines about how hard she has it.

She’s an unlikable, ungrateful shrew and we’ve all heard all we need to hear from her, to dislike her.

NoDonkey on July 17, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Maybe America is offensive to him.

You know what? I’ve been thinking the same thing! For some reason, Obama can say he “loves” America, but he doesn’t really like it. What he really intends to do is to “Change” it to his liking, to the way he thinks America should be.

There’s another segment of the population with that same tendency, but again, why mention it? He may well be offended by it…

These are going to be some long four years, at least. I’d advise anyone to get your passports ready.

newton on July 17, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Then tell your wife to shut her mouth sir!

catmman on July 17, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Michelle Obama can say whatever she wants, including “she’s proud of America for the first time”, and “my interest first and foremost is people of my race (paraphrase), but we can’t say anything negative about her?

Well, pumpkin it doesn’t work that way. Stay home, raise the kids and keep your mouth shut, i.e., Barbara Bush and Laura Bush and we won’t say anything negative about you. If you have to open your mouth say that you’ve always been proud of America and your first priority is Americans. To use racism in your campaign is breathtaking hypocrisy.

Whine all you like BO, she is campaigning for you and that makes her fair game.

In related news, Obama said he was very upset at the Republican straw men he built in his backyard.

In other news, Don Quixote was defeated by a windmill in fair competition.

ynot4tony2 on July 17, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Obama, candidate of perpetual rage. How tiresome.

Michelle Obama needs to keep her mouth shut if she doesn’t want other people to use their freedom of speech to disagree with her opinions and anger issues against the US.

katieanne on July 17, 2008 at 3:25 PM

His wife is a militant, socialist fool who doesn’t know when to shut up. This isn’t like the lame treatment Papelbon’s wife received, Barry, get over it. Michelle asked for it and tried to swim with the sharks, she’s not a victim.

Yo Hussein, you could go on one or both of Hannity’s shows and tell him what you think to his face (when pigs fly). Hold his breath Yoda will not.

A guy who pulled the garbage he did on his GRANDMOTHER shouldn’t be whining that his loudmouth wife has her wittle fewwwings hurlt…boo hoo.

benrand on July 17, 2008 at 3:26 PM

In the very beginning of his official candidacy for POTUS, she stormed out the gate like a filly mare chomping at the bit and hit the campaign trail making speeches and promising this and that on behalf of her husband. Oft times when he wasn’t even present in the same state. Oft times she was denigrating my country that her husband seeks to lead in her speeches.

She’s fair game. Just as much so as the Obamassiah himself.

The Obamassiah needs a truckload of cheese to go with his truckload of whine. He wants to be the President, and he can’t even be a man.

SilverStar830 on July 17, 2008 at 3:26 PM

She brought this on herself and now they (the whiny Os) don’t want to be accountable for her own words. Give the conservatives a time out because they are being mean. Perhaps the Vanity Fair Cover should have had the First Amendment burning in the fireplace as well.

HawaiiLwyr on July 17, 2008 at 3:26 PM

so contrived and transparent.

look at the venue. Glamour magazine, I think they are trying to play the victim card to appeal to those feminists that say Hilary was roughed up in a sexist fashion.

Either that or I missed the part of the article where obama discussed the historic nature of the constant hegemonic challenge endemic to controlling the straits of molucca with a non blue water naval force.

Of course Obama neglects to mention that Michelle the civilian is speaking at a huge fundraising and political event today (Thursday July 17th) in Washington state with governor Christine Gregoire.
Giving political speeches, raising money for her husband makes her NOT a political civilian.

If Obama wants his wife left alone he should tell her to stay at home.

Skeptic on July 17, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Oh please…

When was the last time you heard a critique of Michelle Obama? He put her on the campaign trail and she embarrased him. Now he takes her off the trail and no one has anything to say. This is greivance theater. Where are the critiques of her and not of what she said? He just wants sympathy to draw the female vote.

And since he wants to debate he can debate, um what’s his name-McCain,the guy he is running against yet keeps ducking. That challenge he issued to dabate McCain anytime anywhere is looking prety hollow.

Theworldisnotenough on July 17, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Because essentially, spouses are civilians. They didn’t sign up for this. They’re supporting their spouse.

I disagree. Spouses do “sign up” because victory means a very public role with official public duties, a platform, and a government-paid staff to help them ’support’ their spouse. There name may not be on the ticket but just ask John Kerry how important it is to keep your loony unpleasant spouse out of the public eye if you want to win.

Michelle Hussein Obama was yacking to a gaggle of female supporters the other day about the new plan to hand out a second round of tax rebates to people who don’t pay taxes. REgarding the paltry amount of $600 that was being discussed, and said, “The short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good, and it may even feel good that first month when you get that check, and then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.”

That girl’s a regular working class hero.

Aww heck… In Washington? Contrasting McCain’s and Obama’s answer on the Hanford site is a much beter strategy. Obama looks inexperienced, and McCain looks like he has a clear grasp of the issue.

No one in Washingtoon cares if his wife is undesireable. Those that do are probably already in the McCain column. And this has a benefit for Obama, he can endear himself to women by “standing up” for his woman against the “Republican attack machine.”

Theworldisnotenough on July 17, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Just to set the record straight, Michelle made the same basic comment twice on that day. Once she used the word “really” and once she didn’t.

This just shows that her professed lack of pride wasn’t a slip-up or a miswording, but that she really wasn’t proud until the country rallied behind an empty suit who can read aloud nicely.

Nice ad! Very proper with a warm touch at the end.

If BHO wants his wife left out of the public domain, HE must leave her out of it and quit relying on Michelle to tie his shoe laces for him in public. Who the heck do you think FOUND Obamarx in the first place? It wasn’t until she linked up with him that he found receptive connections via his wife. HE can’t survive without HER.

If Michelle wants to be left alone, she has to stay silent and never be in the foreground. She can not have it both ways; no one can have their cake and eat it, too, regardless of gender, race or creed.

BHO is full of mean spirited rancor by saying that Republican wives have been given the TLC kid glove treatment by Democrats in politics.

Nancy Reagan’s public statements were limited to “Just Say No” advertisements against drug abuse. But the press pulverized her for standing by her man as she did with such devotion. More recently, when Judges were being vetted for the Supreme Court, their wives AND children were bruised by the press. Our First Lady Laura Bush has always had her plate filled by ugly press about her daughters. At this point, Cindy McCain is as smart as they come. She certainly has no reason to change her fine manners in order to provide the press with any opportunity to abuse her.

By the way, Lennie, “really” can also mean “truly”, not just “particularly”.

In any event, the only reason she added “really” was to attempt some damage control in a superciliously indulgent manner. In other words, she was being patronizing.

SilverStar830 on July 17, 2008 at 4:16 PM

Does anybody remember TeRAHza attacked Laura Bush for not being ‘a career woman’? Which infuriated so many people, she had to apologize.

Candidates’ spouses are not innocent bystanders (”They did not sign up for this” - Obama), you know. When the party elders evaluating potential candidates, spouse factor was heavily recruited and considered.

I wouldn’t mind one bit a candidate’s spouse on the campaign trail to support him/her. If done right. Trust the libs to always ‘not done right’. They don’t know the limits.

I’m sorry, but if he’s going to whine and complain every time someone says something about his wife, then he can’t handle worse stuff coming to him.

Welcome to the era of Hypersensitive Presidents. Trained and emasculated by Oprah and her minions. Gerald said it best: “The voice of the American Castrati is heard throughout the land.”

Where have you gone, John Wayne?

Addicts need rehabilitation. That requires a willingness, though, to admit the problem and voluntarily participate in the therapy. Usually it takes enough trouble to reach a person’s pain threshold. For some, it takes legal trouble, even incarceration, to help reach the “bottom”.

immanentize the eschaton

Are we there yet? Will gas and food have to go much higher, and a more than a $600 check (which only buys earrings for Michelle), be necessary to assuage the mob? Shall we suffer more before we can claim our “collective salvation” by assenting to the messianic promise?

Stay tuned.
