Are the media airbrushing Obama’s speeches? Update: Wouldn’t ICE qualify?

posted at 9:30 am on July 17, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

World Net Daily does not have a great reputation for accuracy in its reporting, but Bob Unruh has pretty solid evidence for his report on a disappearing section of a speech given by Barack Obama.  On July 2nd, Obama spoke in Colorado Springs and hit themes of national service, foreign policy, and national security. In that vein, Obama proposed a rather extraordinary idea — that the US should spend as much money on a civilian national security force as it does on the military. The quote comes from 16:45 in the clip below:

We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

It’s not quite clear what Obama meant by this. If he meant that the military had taken over too many functions that normally should be handled by the State Department, then that echoes what Defense Secretary Robert Gates said this week. It seems to reference the costs associated with reopening consulates and doubling the Peace Corps, but that wouldn’t come close to matching what we spend at the Pentagon. The phrasing of it — a “civilian national security force” — sounds much more like a quasi-military organization operating within the US under the control of the federal government.

The media needs to ask Obama about it — but they’d have to report it first:

The stunning comments from Democrat Sen. Barack Obama that the United States needs a “civilian national security force” that would be as powerful, strong and well-funded as the half-trillion dollar United States Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force have mysteriously disappeared from published transcripts of the speech.

In the comments, Obama confirmed the U.S. “cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set.”

Campaign officials have declined to return any of a series of WND telephone calls over several days requesting a comment on the situation. Nor have they posted a transcript of the speech on their website.

WND points out two newspapers that printed the supposedly complete transcript of the speech, the Wall Street Journal and the Denver Post, as examples. The New York Times didn’t post a transcript, and neither did the Washington Post nor the Los Angeles Times. Most oddly, as Unruh points out, the Obama website doesn’t have that speech available, either.

Obama needs to clarify what he means by “civilian national security force”, and how it would be funded. After all, we have a panoply of federal security agencies already: FBI, BATF, DEA, and more, plus the National Guard on the state level. Where would Obama get the money to fund it at the same level as the Pentagon? What would its mission be, and where would it get its authority? What would be the lines of jurisdiction?

All of these questions need to be answered — but first the media has to find its objectivity and start asking about the speech and report it correctly. Obviously the Obama campaign provided them with an advance copy for the event, and just as obviously Obama deviated from it. Aren’t any journalists curious as to why?

Update: Doesn’t this statement conflict with Obama’s statement about ICE?

When communities are terrorized by ICE immigration raids, when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel, when all that is happening, the system just isn’t working, and we need to change it.

Wouldn’t ICE be part of a civilian national security force? Obama sounds more and more confused by the day. (h/t HA reader Jeff D)

Update II: Note to desperate Obama apologists: the Peace Corps is not a “national security force”.

Perhaps he’e been studying under Castro and the gutless media is pertrified that if word of his demands of “public service”, read as “the draft”, get out the chickens will LEAVE the roost.

“civilian national security force”

That has a menacing ring to it, but I don’t think Obama has any idea what he meant by it. He was running his mouth about something he doesn’t understand again, and the media are burying it.

I’m looking forward to debates, or any other situation in which Obama is subject to semi-tough questions without a teleprompter. It’s going to get ugly. No wonder his handlers are keeping him away from joint town halls.

Obviously, Obama mis-spoke.

However, if he is called on it, and he maintains true to form, he will paint himself into a corner by insisting that he meant every word. Then we can have a merry time pointing out how stupid and irresponsible the idea is, and Obama will counter by marrying himself ever closer to his error.

They don’t really have to airbrush his speeches when they don’t ever go back and compare what he has said. If he says one thing and in a week says another that is contradictory he doesn’t even get called on it. He is just such the “transformative political figure” that the facts don’t matter. It isn’t what he says but he says it.

The NY Times revealed today that the anchors of all three MSM networks will join the Obama publicity tour of Europe and the MidEast. The Times reported that each of the three anchors will do an “exclusive” interview with Obama and despite “grumbling” all three anchors will do the interviews at a time and place of Obama’s choosing. Obama would not allow any interviews in the war zone and the three networks agreed to this demand. Incredibly, the spokesmen for the three networks deny that this shows any proObama bias. A guy named Friedman for CBS News who was interviewed admitted that he felt that Obama is more newsworthy and praiseworthy than McCain. He also said that it was correct not to have an anchor and a crew on the McCain trip to Iraq and the CBS guy actually told the Times that McCain will have to return to VietNam to have the CBS anchor and a CBS crew cover the trip.

The reason the military works is because it’s (relatively) immune to the sort of political hackjobs that produced the Democrat’s joke of a Presidential nominee.

You don’t magically get appointed to General because you look good on TV, because your last name is Kennedy or because you make pretty speeches.

You start as a second Lieutenant, leading a platoon. Then a company, etc. No shortcuts. You don’t get to be CEO of the sausage factory while having no idea how the sausage is made, like Junior Jackass Obama here.

This idiotic proposal of his is merely a way to throw tax dollars at political appointees and other useless union featherbedders. That’s all that this is about.

The only “security” provided by these parasites will be job security – theirs.

Back in ’04, Senator Kerry gave an interview to Chris Mathews. This was at the time the Swift Boat Vets were demanding release of his military records and the good Senator insisted he had release them ALL. Towards the end of the interview, Mathews asked Senator Kerry how he felt about George Bush having a higher IQ than his. The Senator’s response was to ask where that information came from. Mathews response was that it was the IQ scores (GT Score) reported on their military records. The Senator then responded with “I don’t know how they know that since I haven’t released those records”. I heard it live. I watched the “repeat” on the MSNBC web site. I read the text as well. Four hours later, that portion of the interview ceased to exist in any form.

They are just getting much better at cleaning up after their candidate’s mistakes.

“civilian national security force”
Wilson’s US progressive fascists permeated not only our government at all levels and all three brances including our national guard and all military personnel, but our home towns via civic organizations including all ages. FDR did the same thing again. G-men knocking down your door in the dead of night happened in the good ol’ US of A while neighbors figured those folks must have had it coming or it wouldn’t have happened, certainly not from the likes of good solid Democrats who care about the little guy so much that they’ll shoot them down for forming a union, or for a strike without a union, or for protesting governmental injustice in public or private.

Today we only hear of Nazi brown shirts or Italian black shirts IF we hear of anything at all negative about socialism. But if any are in doubt of our own history, Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism documents our own political geneology from the Rousseau’s 18th Century rebuttal to the Enlightenment, through the 19th Century Bismarck, to our contemporary day: Socialists, Marxists, Progressive Party,Democrats, Compassionate Conservatives, the list is rather inclusive as totalitarianism works.

The USA sported her own fascism via Wilson from which the Europeans imitated. We in our modern ignorance of history demand to imitate the European imitation in order to feel comfortable with our own progressive tendencies. Argh!

Just stick to the Constitution as it was written. The Europeans NEVER topped it! The Asians NEVER topped it. The Semites NEVER topped it! The Persians NEVER topped it. The Indios NEVER topped it.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken, Obamarx!

Besides, until Mr. Malleable BHO produces his legal, unaltered certificate of live birth to prove his eligibility as a POTUS candidate, by failing to comply with Constitutional prerequisites, he remains illegitimate and legally null and void NO MATTER HOW MANY VOTES HE COLLECTS.

The campaign for President of the United States is not a recycling campaign as Obamarx would make of it, turning back the time to accomodate his fascism. Obamarx would REQUIRE his private army to fight domestic unrest as he prostitutes our Constitution for the benefit of terror. His political supporters are terrorists from the grass roots to his international global business contacts that play him as their sock puppet. Soros is just the most identified face and name. Obamarx networked for three years in the international business of networking. The Times article spells out Obamarx’s PIN STRIPE strategy of fascistic political evolutionary progression. His political means are so untouchable as they are the legal establishment.

Anyway, enough already! There’s nothing new to discover. It’s all written on the wall if still hidden between locked pages.

Force Obama’s hand to produce his LEGAL unaltered Certificate of Live Birth. THIS is a procedure that Obama with all of his wiles can not legally fail to regard. The onus is upon Obama. Force Obama to produce his proof of eligibility as Constitutionally required.

Otherwise, everything is a waste of effort. Dismiss the Constitution in all ways if disregarded as the source. Dismiss responsibility in all ways if disregarded at the source.

These specious charges came from this event:
Immigration Raid Rips Families

The best of my recollection John Kerry and Ted Kennedy made the charges and fanned the media flames. It turned out that in some cases, the Illegals told ICE they had no children when asked. Those who told the truth were released to care for them.

Look what the Washington Post was forced to do:

A March 18 article on the impact of a raid by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency at a factory in New Beford, Mass., incorrectly said that Marta Escoto, one of those arrested, was not allowed to contact her family for three days. She was, in fact, allowed a telephone call on the evening of her arrest. The Post also erred in not contacting ICE in preparing the article. ICE spokesman Marc Raimondi said the agency “took extraordinary steps to respect humanitarian concerns during the New Bedford worksite enforcement operation that included months of coordination with the Massachusetts Department of Safety and the humanitarian release of more than 90 of the 361 illegal aliens apprehended.”

JonPrichard on July 17, 2008 at 11:08 AM

I’m not frightened – the kind of people Obama would hire for this program are the sort that want to sit in the A/C all day (that is, if they HAVE to show up for work) and collect a fat paycheck.

I am frightened for the economic state of this country if Obama becomes President, but not for our rights. Followers of Obama are far too lazy and stupid to embark on any sort of jackbooted campaign, that would take time away from their drinking, drugging and other various perversions.

What Obama seems to refer to by a “civilian national security force” and other remarks about “social service” etc. is “community organizing”.

Obama seems to want to put in place a federal, tax dollars-funded program for community organizing or “social activism”. It would be an extension and acceleration of the “long march through the institutions”, pushing through leftwing causes like they have been doing for four decades via the school and legal system.

It would all be made to look very benign, building on Peace Corps and other established organizations. It would not look like a paramilitary organization with uniforms. It would be a much more insidious Obama Youth preparing the way for fascism.

modifiedcontent on July 17, 2008 at 11:33 AM

In the led-up to the ‘civilan national security force’, he was refering to PeaceCorp and AmeriCorp. If you pay attention, he is very clear about severely cut back the military (both personnel, funding, and especially the research funding). So it is not far-fetched his civilian volunteer force could rival that of the military. Those four words were probably not in the teleprompter, just very ill chosen words when he’s shooting from his mouth. Clearly he mis-spoke, coming from a ‘Constitutional Law scholar’.

However, words mean something, especially when spoken in a presidential campaign event, not as his current US Senator of powerful chairmanship or as a private citizen.

I would love to see State Dept, his WH press secretary and his own cabinet 24/7 clearifying President Obama doesn’t mean what he said, blunder after blunder.

On second thought, no, I don’t.

I have been a lifelong student of the great communist dissidents and critics, Nobel prize winning literary figures like Czeslaw Milosz, Wislawa Symborska (together will all the Polish post-war poets!), Arthur Koestler, and Solzhenitsyn.

Due to the effective influence, and the emotional and intellectual clarity of these writers, I have the unpleasant job of informing you all that this Obama fellow is the real thing. He and his entire retinue are trouble.

jeff_from_mpls on July 17, 2008 at 11:41 AM

Nobody in the history of this nation running for POTUS was this green, was it? Jimmah may be naive, but was he as stupid as this guy?

/sorry, I came in mid-80s, not paying attention to politics at the time

Sir Napsalot on July 17, 2008 at 11:53 AM

The phrasing of it — a “civilian national security force” — sounds much more like a quasi-military organization operating within the US under the control of the federal government.

With a Pres. determined to disarm the civilians the national security force is sworn to protect.

Speakup on July 17, 2008 at 12:07 PM

A civilian national security force? Like the Russian Secret Police? What the hell is he talking about? We have state and local law enforcement…the last thing we need is a Federal Police Force under the watchful eye of the democrats!

sabbott on July 17, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Hey Obama, regarding your Federal Police Force…NYET!

sabbott on July 17, 2008 at 12:15 PM

that the US should spend as much money on a civilian national security force as it does on the military. The quote comes from 16:45 in the clip below:

This is scary, is he going to hire brown shirts to go and scare people into voting for him? LMAO

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.. Yo Yo YO.. this is the Peace Officer, YOU MUST GET OUT OF YOUR HOUSE AND DO COMMUNITY SERVICE!

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Sheesh… Forcing people into volunteering? Hmmm..

Forced labor.. hmmm.. Commie Obammie.

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 12:21 PM

It won’t be a Federal Police Force! It will be much more insidious, as TABoLK said, like ‘Rainbowshirts’ who will ‘make you feel happy about your new socialist overlords…’.

modifiedcontent on July 17, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Perhaps Obama has truly seen the light, and his ‘civilian national security force’ is actually the ultimate constitutional embodiment of Article 1:8:(15 & 16).

A fully empowered civilian militia, executing the laws of the land, armed and trained by congressional order.

Why does your post make me think the Senator Obama = Mugabe Jr. (without all the killin’)?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 17, 2008 at 12:31 PM

LimeyGeek on July 17, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Yeah……I’m thinking not so much on that one.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 17, 2008 at 12:32 PM

I just had a disturbing thought.

I found myself, just now, hoping that if Obama were to con his way into the Presidency, that he would at least model his goon squad on the UN Peacekeeping squads. The blue helmets, weak and ineffectual, obsessed with not hurting anybody.

We all know the UN linguini patrol is a joke intended to embolden civilization’s enemies by sending them a wink and a nod.

Sadly, the level of force we would expect the UN to impose on foreign rogue states is probably just what Obama has in mind for our suburbs.

jeff_from_mpls on July 17, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Obama apparently is advocating more actions like Ruby Ridge and Waco…that is, military actions against US citizens on US soil!!!

This is a truly dangerous man: a useful idiot who is captive to the most extreme leftists.

It could happen. It could.

Stop laughing.

LimeyGeek on July 17, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Obama is a Hardcore Pansy pacifist liberal.

This civil defense force funded equally to the US military is retarted. Does anyone really not understand what would happen if we sent the freekin peace core into Warizistan?

Just like the other day when Obama proposed that he was going to work on proliferation by ending all nuclear weapons grade material and disarming the US nuclear weapons. Because this will give the US “authority” and “credibility” when calling for other nations to eliminate or not go nuclear?

This guy is truly dangerous stupid.

C-Low on July 17, 2008 at 12:48 PM

I put a blog post up about this on the 13th. I found the same you tube clip. There were several references to his saying what he did, but I couldn’t confirm it.

I also tried to find transcripts of the speech and found a few, none of which had the material about the civilian force.

What disturbed me was that none of the outlets which referenced the quote, including several conservative blogs, put up a link to any corroborating material.

“Trust but verify.”

Maybe he will just hire and fund The Nation of Islam Thugs and The Black Panthers to go around and bang on doors to scare people in to volunteering.. LOL

It wouldn’t surprise me..

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 12:53 PM

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!!!!

Yo Yo YO! Its Ali Shabbazzz! Open up fool! Time to go volunteer! NOW!

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM

OH!!!! Now in KNOW!

I now what is civilian force would look like..

Vice Lords, Latin Kings, Black Gangster Disciples(BGD), Spanish Gangster Disciples (SGD), 26, 4C(4Corner hustlers), Latin Dragons, Simon City Royals, Nation of Islam

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Obama was a community organizer remember he organized them already! LOL

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 1:07 PM

You’re confusing civilian with domestic. From what I gathered he wants a well-funded army of aid workers. The real issue is when he says “just as well-funded.” Is he planning on cutting the military to grow the peace corps?

either that or he’s gonna have to spend money from somewhere..

will he lower taxes to get more revenues? HELL NO, he’s a liberal.. LOL

So, he will do HUGE TAX INCREASES and sink the economy into a deep recession

Chakra Hammer on July 17, 2008 at 1:15 PM

Can Obama throw himself under his own bus?

Sir Napsalot on July 17, 2008 at 11:38 AM

I give it better than even odds, with time.
