Video: “It’s just a f***ing cartoon”
posted at 11:35 am on July 16, 2008 by Allahpundit
Commendable as an example of Stewart not letting the left cow him into laying off Obama for the good of The Cause, although (a) given the nature of the Daily Show it’s not like they had much choice in which side of the debate to take, and (b) aside from the cutting line about Muslim extremists, this is more of an attack on media bien-pensant hypocrisy than on St. Barack. I assume this was taped before Obama himself finally weighed in last night on Larry King sounding some of the same notes as Stewart — it’s just a cartoon, no one much cares, etc etc. That’s vintage Barry O: He lets his lackeys shovel crap for him while he remains angelically above the fray, forever the voice of reason amid the tumult ginned up by the bottom-feeders in his own camp. If Stewart’s looking for a comic angle on him, there’s plenty of ore to mine in that.

Apparantly, Jon Stewert is a Zionist puppet. Who knew?

My vote for quote of the day.

Is that Rob Riggle I see there?
Squid Shark on July 16, 2008 at 11:43 AM
But…but..but…Obama said the cartoon offended Muslims! I think we all know this isn’t true. No embassies have been burned over it.
Jay on July 16, 2008 at 11:43 AM
I agree Jay. The sensitive chameleon is just whining again.
volsense on July 16, 2008 at 11:47 AM
That freeze-frame of Stewart while waiting for the second vid to buffer is priceless…
Weelll, I might have to start watching the Daily Show again…
JetBoy on July 16, 2008 at 11:48 AM
I’ve liked Rob Riggle ever since that awesome Code Pink story he did for TDS. The second video was pretty funny.
jimmy the notable on July 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM
Somebody in another thread mentioned that Rush had given the same “You know who gets upset over cartoons? Muslim extremists.” line earlier in the day that Stewart gave that night.
malan89 on July 16, 2008 at 11:50 AM
I have this odd feeling, Jon Stewart may not like Obama…. It could be a possibility but then again….
upinak on July 16, 2008 at 11:50 AM
He’s probably just a nihilist. Doesn’t like anything.
lorien1973 on July 16, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Completely OT, but is anybody else disgusted by the fact that we have to listen to Huckster fill in for Paul Harvey before Rush comes on? Ugh.
malan89 on July 16, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Funniest part in the first clip was 3:10 – 3:45 IMO.
Yakko77 on July 16, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Hilarious. All of it.
Meryl Yourish on July 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM
I’m pretty sure Jon Stewart likes Obama. I anyone has watched his show they know he is a liberal. I would even say passionately liberal. However, he also hates the news media.
terryannonline on July 16, 2008 at 11:59 AM
I think Stewart supports Obama, but isn’t blinded by him as a Messiah.
amerpundit on July 16, 2008 at 12:01 PM
I haven’t read all the comments, but am I the only one who saw the New Yorker article as decidedly negative towards Obama? It basically explains how politically opportunistic he has been his entire adult life. I know its a lefty mag but the writer sounds like a former/current Hilary supporter… which doesn’t bode well for the cover being entirely satirical.
Misty217 on July 16, 2008 at 12:03 PM
I love blue on blue attacks.
It makes me feel a little dirty though
dc84123 on July 16, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Jon Stewart is cute at it. But his rogue “reporters” on the street actually get stuck in their own lack of prime-time delivery style. Timing is everything in humor. But they’ll get the knack–if they have the balls to try it again just a bit more succinctly. We witness how frail bystanders have become–no one willing to take a stand in public on anything, everyone “uncomfortable”, the very real fear factor–whether fearing physical or just social attack.
I’m still reading The New Yorker article that provides a thoroughly researched progression of Obama from his Chicago birth:
Just to mention two thoughts.
Obama’s fathers were Muslim and he DID attend the madrassa; no satire necessarily affects that fact, just the dismissal of the fact. His mother was more an atheist than Christian, but was absolutely a Marxist as were her parents, his white grandparents.
As per Obama’s Christian faith, it’s fine that he feels it, or at least assume it. However, he fails to make public his formal Baptism–when, where, who. He mentions his children’s by Wright, but I have yet to read or hear of his own formal Christian baptism. Usually when someone wants to verify their Christian conversion, they say, “Yes, I was baptized …” so again, this is something Obama does NOT relish.
Obama also fails himself to provide his legal, unaltered certificate of live birth.
He hides behind his malleable facade. All the “achievements” on his resume are things that the powerful bestowed upon him. Obama’s only achievement to date is networking. WHAT Obama will accomplish against us through his global network is what I dread.
maverick muse on July 16, 2008 at 12:03 PM
I might have to start watching the Daily Show again because those clips were comedy gold.
On another note: are they really referring to Stewart as a ZIONIST PUPPET? I am offended by the need by the left to refer to people in perjorative ways that no conservative would ever dream of.
HawaiiLwyr on July 16, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Is anyone reading the Ryan Lizza article inside the magazine?

I cannot believe that. Scathing as Jonny Boy’s little diatribe here is, he’s a schmoozing dip who likes things that sound nice, an ideal Obama voter.
Absolutely.
MadisonConservative on July 16, 2008 at 12:06 PM
The second was a hilarious piece, but I didn’t see any Obama humor in either. Humor about Obama wasn’t anywhere to be found, except for one point where Stewart made fun of the campaign’s response. Mostly, the first piece was a defense of Obama – as I saw it – taking legitimate issues (like Wright’s influence) and trying to play them off as silly and inconsequential. I believe that Stewart’s comparison of Obama to muslim extremists was just an error, since he quickly ran away from that very humor-rich point.

LOL, I knew someone would bring it up. Just didn’t know which board :-)
I’m enjoying all this lib vs. lib fighting. I am still laughing over that ever so uncomfortable silence from the last time Stewart “acted out.” It was as if they were in high school and somebody dared to make fun of the head cheerleader.
Dubn8tr on July 16, 2008 at 12:14 PM
I saw a piece on CNN yesterday or the day before. It was about common “myths” or “misperceptions” about Obama. The report said that X percentage (don’t recall the number) of Americans think Obama attended a Muslim school as a child, but the truth is that his parents were atheists who provided Obama with no religious training, and Obama attended a public school in Indonesia where there was no religious instruction at all.
It that is true, then just how (and when/where) did Obama learn the quotes from the Qur’an that he recited to the NY Times in his “almost perfect” Arabic accent, as the Times reported?
These lefty news organizations need to get together and figure out a consistent narrative about Obama’s background.

I’m more in Obama’s camp than McCain’s camp but I find the left wing “outrage” over this cover deeply disappointing. Maybe the voting public as a whole is way dumber than I thought…
Great Daily Show clip though. I’m glad someone in the “media” has some sense even though they are on a comedy network.
PaulD on July 16, 2008 at 12:50 PM
I’m beginning to think the media is wanting this story kept alive, in hopes of generating sympathy votes for Barack
ToddonCapeCod on July 16, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Am I racist if I admit to having some concerns about a President raised by a father who was educated in madrassas and a mother who was a Marxist?
Just curious. Cuz I, um, have some concerns.
Professor Blather on July 16, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Both Obama and Stewart are a$$es in my opinion.
I found it humorous and accurate and honestly
don’t give a damn what those two think of it.
It is nothing by comparison to all of the trash that Ted Rall creates.
old trooper on July 16, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Very funny piece. Stewart must have listened to Rush since he mentioned Muslim extremists are the ones that get upset over a cartoon.
jencab on July 16, 2008 at 1:07 PM
The visual power of this cartoon backfired on The New Yorker which wanted to make fun of “false accusations” about the Democrats new leadership team, but created in this cartoon Image great facial expressions of the Obamas’ which we have all seen. These facial expressions remind everyone of the Obamas their true backgrounds which they dont want known before the election: his is that of the self-righteous Moslem male and hers is that of Black-power/Affirmative Action entlement Leader. I smell a Hillary supporter at work here. Mccain may become POTUS after all.
jimw on July 16, 2008 at 1:13 PM
So how, exactly, is a cartoon which portrays Barak Obama as a Muslim “insulting?” And is Barak saying that associating him with his relatives is insulting to Muslims, or insulting to him, or both?
Whether you choose to call this kind of circular thinking satire or inanity, one thing is obvious: Barak Obama and The New Yorker are on exactly the same wavelength.
There is nothing to this cartoon except what you bring with you. If my father had been a Presbyterian and The New Yorker portrayed me as one, would I feel insulted for that church, or for myself? Or would I assume it was meant as a wink-and-nod to the throngs of small-minded “racists” out there who aren’t capable of imagining that some Presbyterians aren’t rabidly evil?
Or would I just say what everyone knows, but some twits are too self-consciously pretentious to admit: that the New Yorker isn’t funny?
logis on July 16, 2008 at 1:20 PM
More misdirection. What you’re supposed to take away from the first clip is, “Cartoons don’t mean anything and are never offensive”.
Actually, the issue is about a lefty magazine trying to shield Obama from those evil righty racial and religious slurs that they are sure to start slinging any day now. Remember, it’s coming from the Left. Notice that at no time do the fingers leave the hand.
The New Yorker blew it, so now Mr. Stewart has to play his role: “Cartoons are harmless. It’s a joke.”
Expect the magazine (or another lefty rag) to put out an offensive McCain cartoon. Then they (Stewart included) can say, “It’s just a cartoon!”, ignoring the fact that it is again coming from the Left. What makes the difference is that, instead of attempting to shield an ally, they’ll be genuinely attacking an enemy.
Stand by.
MikeZero on July 16, 2008 at 1:20 PM
Good for Stewart! Excellent funny!
sabbott on July 16, 2008 at 1:22 PM
I’d like to suggest that these were incredibly irresponsible comments made by Obama on Larry King. Obama KNOWS The New Yorker wasn’t trying to offend Muslims, but I get the feeling that Obama thinks it’d be kinda neat if a bunch of extremists got pissed off and torched the place. In my view, he’s holding the match going “Here crazy Muslim. Come and get it. Here boy.”
Rational Thought on July 16, 2008 at 1:28 PM
Interesting point.
progressoverpeace on July 16, 2008 at 1:35 PM
****Pounding head against wall****
Can we not see what is going on here? The liberals are DESPERATE to make this campaign about “Republican smears” even if they have to blatantly keep putting the smears out themselves! They keep trying to bait McCain into a personal attack on Obama, and so far he isn’t playing along. So they pull something like this in the New Yorker just to get the “Republican smears” meme out there. They have succeeded in turning this into a week-long story and teasing out a whole bunch of stupid comments on consrervative blogs saying “what’s the big deal, everything in that cartoon was true.” They are going to beat us over the head with these comments the rest of the campaign.
rockmom on July 16, 2008 at 1:51 PM
The Barak Hussien Obama camp hates it because it hits close to home.
The people that support that fool hate America and all it stands for.
Sure people try to spin it the other way but I think it is plain to see.

The Obama camp has absolutely no sense of humor. And they are thin skinned and way to full of themselves. Especially Obama himself. Look at the crap Bush has had to take in the last 8 years. Somehow I don’t think the Obama people and their fearless leader cut tolerate that kind of malicious paranoid scandal mongering.

Limbaugh made that “only Muslims get angry at cartoons” joke too
AbaddonsReign on July 16, 2008 at 6:32 PM
This New Yorker cartoon cover seems like a bungled attack on conservatives which blew up in the breech when loaded. They thought they were debunking negative stereotypes about Obama but instead amplified them. The reasons that these stereotypes persist is that there is a kernel of truth to them which can not be whitewashed, not even by the pros in the media.
