Works for me.

Someone needs to explain to nations that they are not allowed to name themselves with as many words as they want and expect people to use them all. They can use two words, they can add a north or south or east or west, or they could put a Jr. on or something, but you can’t name your country with a definite article (which it would sound weird without) and 3 words and expect it to be taken up in popular speech – ‘The Czech Republic’. It’s a naming foul.

I give all people a bye on the Czech Republic (or whatever the hell it’s called now) because ‘Czechoslovakia’ just rolls off the tongue so nicely and ‘The Czech Republic’ and … I don’t know, is it ‘The Slovak Republic’ or Slovakia or ‘Not The Czechs’ … just don’t.

I’m really curious as to what exactly is the opposition to missile defense.

It’s continuing the arms race, man, instead of choosing peace by disarming and letting your enemies become as strong as you so that they aren’t mad that you’re stronger. Or something like that, I tuned out pretty quickly.

I know a lot of people are saying its not a big deal, who can keep track in that part of the world, etc, but the Czechs have been excellent allies for the United States, and its really not asking to much to get their name right.

Browbeating oldsters for using out of date place names is a time honored tradition among the liberal academic elite. I remember having Zaire drilled into my head back in the 70’s, but it’s the Congo again now, so my old globe is right again.

By descent, so am I. Mostly Slovak, with some Polish, and a smattering of Czech and Hungarian.

I wrote a report on Rhodesia in elementary school. It became Zimbabwe the year I graduated high school. I didn’t need geography in college.
