Vets for Freedom ad: “Some in Washington”

posted at 7:54 am on July 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Vets for Freedom continues their efforts to push for a successful conclusion to the war in Iraq with their latest ad, “Some in Washington”. The ad produces quotes from notables such as Harry Reid, Barack Obama, and Obama’s latest BFF and Iraq tripmate Chuck Hagel all declaring the surge a failure before it even started and the war lost. The veterans then introduce headlines from this year proclaiming how wrong these “leaders” turned out to be:

At the same time, Centcom has released its latest unclassified report on security trends — and they continue to show improvement. The number of attacks have declined to the lowest per-week level since March 2004, and guess when the trend started? Coincidentally, when General Petraeus took command and got his additional surge troops:

See that dramatic decline starting in May 2007?  The dramatic slope of the decline shows the effectiveness of the surge and the new counterinsurgency efforts of Petraeus.  Some claim that the real reason for the improvements was the Anbar Awakening movement that formed in autumn 2006, but that didn’t result in any immediate improvement.  As this chart shows, violence increased to a crescendo in May 2007 when American troops began aggressively attacking terrorist strongholds.

But what of sectarian violence?  Critics warn that Iraq will melt down in Shi’a-Sunni hatred and violence.  In fact, that has all but disappeared entirely, even in multisectarian Baghdad.

The red line shows sectarian deaths for all of Iraq, and the blue specific to Baghdad.  As we can see, most of the sectarian violence in Iraq has been limited to Baghdad anyway.  And when did those numbers begin their dramatic decline?  When Petraeus took command and began implementing a new security plan for the capital as well as one for the nation as a whole.

Obama, Hagel, Reid, and many others clearly got the war wrong.  John McCain got it right.  Vets for Freedom — men and women who have been there and seen victory within our grasp — want the US to finish the job this time.

Remember–McCain called for a surge long before most anyone else.
He’ll be an excellent Commander-in-Chief.
On other issues, we’ll probably have to hold his feet to the fire.

I’m really happy I get to witness this success. I wasn’t born when the Democrats forced our defeat in Vietnam, but hearing Iraq compared to Vietnam always made me sick. Amazingly, there are certainly people who will still say that the surge didn’t work and that the war is lost. Those people simply ignore the facts on the ground. I do believe that the Anbar Awakening played a huge role, and the fact that the Iraqis there became so sick of the terrorists that they put their own lives at risk to help the Americans speaks volumes.

Now we need to turn around Afghanistan, the so called “right” war.

And I am extremely proud that I have 4 in my family that have/are putting it on the line to secure the future of Iraq for their citizens.

csdeven on July 16, 2008 at 8:05 AM

Obama, Hagel, Reid, and many others clearly got the war wrong.

And it is a sure bet that despite all the evidence to the contrary, they will all continue to denounce all the progress made and will continue to say this war is a lost cause, strictly because they are creatures of habit that are committed to defeat and failure. People like this should never have been placed in the positions of power they are all in right now.

Dhimmicrats, Islamist Terrorists and Iraqi and Taliban insurgents all bet against the US military. Bad bet. How’s that working out for them all now?

While I agree that this has not been a total military only effort, and that the enemy always gets a vote, the constant wailing and pontificating that Dhimmicrats use to magnify the supposed invincibility and noble characteristics of terrorists and barefooted insurgents places them squarely in the camp which advocates defeat of the country in which we live.

How any American politician could believe that betting against America and its military (the sole remaining superpower in the world, with at least a respectable and reliable ability to respond to trouble anywhere on Earth… or in near space) as a winning strategy with the American people, whose sons and daughters are dying for our protection, is the height of stupidity.

Only a propaganda operation the likes of which Joseph Goebbels would be proud can paint Dhimmicrats as intelligent in the defense of the country in which they live. They are liars, cheats, and cowards of the first order. The media and news organizations, predominated by liberal journalists, who think they are the only arbiters of Truth and military strategy, are clearly organizing themselves as such a propaganda machine, not controlled by the state, but by their blind loyalty to socialism as an ideology and ignorance and blindness to any threat to the country from Islamist terrorists.

The only thing keeping us safe is the Honor, Integrity, and Commitment of the United States Armed Forces to do what is right and prudent in our defense, despite all the petty bickering and undercutting of each other’s parties that our politicians do, supposedly on behalf of our country, every day.

Dhimmicrats and RINOs disgust me. Every damn one of them. And I remember who each one of them is. Congress sucks. Too bad there’s nothing better around.

“Fighting the fight for those still fighting,” the American way, not the democrat way. Time to send the message to those who would accept our nation’s defeat in order to serve their own thirst for power. Its time to stand up.

“People like this should never have been placed in the positions of power they are all in right now.”

Agree and there is not a single Democrat in Congress who belongs in government. Most of them belong behind bars (and not just the ones the Kennedy clan foul).

Those of us who supported President Bush throughout this perilous time in our country’s history can be assured that we were right then and that we are right now, in believing in our President and our country.

Mr. Morrissey,

Some how I think you do this story a sizable disservice by not including the constant “loser” mentality that emulated from the House of Representitives and their pathetic “leader”—-Nancy Pelosi. How many times did that woman attempt to appease her anti-war constituents by allowing defeatist legislation come to the floor? If any one should be run out of Washington for aiding and abetting the enemy, Pelosi certainly fits the bill.

Rovin on July 16, 2008 at 8:48 AM

Vets for Freedom … want the US to finish the job this time.

Yes, THIS TIME, as oppossed to going back in there after Obama’s thrown out of office in 2012.

Way to go VfF! Doin’ the job the Bush Admin. won’t do, showing us the progress!

Tony737 on July 16, 2008 at 8:53 AM

With democrats declaring we have lost the war while men are on the battlefied and trying to force amnesty down our throats by trying to force a totally incompetent piece of garbage as legislation requires us to flush the dims down the toilet of life.

The Grandson has just returned from deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan where he was wounded. I thank God that his wounds are not life threatening. He say that the U.S. military is “kicking ass”. Now, if my son can just come home safely.

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 9:01 AM

The donkeycrats are having a hard time keeping their stories straight. They proclaimed the surge would never work before we sent in more troops, they scoffed at the idea it was working for well over a year – when it clearly was, and now faced with inconclusive hard evidence it has worked their dreamboy presidential candidate sort of, kind of, says it has been a success.

And to top things off, following endless forecasts of a surge that was doomed to fail in Iraq, their dreamboy now has a solution for Afghanistan …… send in more troops.

Dude. That’s a surge mentality. Thought you and your party didn’t buy into that kind of nonsense.

What’s that? Oh, you’re going to meet with General Petraeus in Iraq. Yeh, good idea to finally say his conduct of the surge paid off dividends, so he doesn’t singe off your eyebrows when he tells you what a candy-ass uninformed ignoramus you are.

Punk.

“If any one should be run out of Washington for aiding and abetting the enemy, Pelosi certainly fits the bill.”

Run out of Washington? The incompetent and corrupt traitor Pelosi deserves to be dragged off to Leavenworth in chains and put on trial for her utterly worthless life.

The French monarchs were effective state stewards compared to the Democrats we have in Congress and look what happened to them.

NoDonkey on July 16, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Other than the NRA, I have NEVER donated money to a political party or cause. That has changed. VfF got a donation from me today. No matter how much the MSM would like us to forget about Iraq now that things are going in our favor, the fight over there is too important to be overlooked and too many of our own “leaders” not only doubted but betrayed our brave men and women in uniform and everything possible needs to be done to remind the voters of their misdeeds.

jgapinoy on July 16, 2008 at 8:01 AM

Exactly exactly exactly. We cannot afford to screw up national security. We need to be somewhat safe first, then we can argue details later.

My son is on his second tour to Iraq and says the same thing – it’s so different from the first time around, pre-surge, so much quieter, etc. Facts that the lying, treasonous MSM and their political minions can’t seem to get through their thick heads or don’t want it to be known.

Mommynator on July 16, 2008 at 9:23 AM

Wrong about the surge. Wrong about energy. Wrong about climate change. Wrong about health care. Wrong about the economy.

I’m really really proud of our men and women in uniform! I’m really really sickened by our “leaders” in Washington who have turned their sacrifice into a political game on both sides of the aisle! Shame on all of them! When our military is in harms way, we should be 100% behind them and their mission and NO politician at any level should get away with politics as usual while they are being wounded and are dying!

Very well stated my friend… This woman is a complete failure, and will go down in history (along with Reid) as the worst political leaders in American history.

Victory is at hand, but there is work left to do. Democrats will do anything to turn an American military victory into an American defeat. If for no other reason, this will get me into the voting booth, where I will vote for McCain rather than sit this one out.

Keemo on July 16, 2008 at 9:35 AM

The democrat position on every issue is proven wrong consistently, which is why the RINOs in the GOP are killing it.

Thanks Keemo,

I too will enter the voting booth to prevent a marxist-socialist with an appeasement mentality from becoming a national security threat to this great nation.

John McCain will not let us lose these crucial battles that still lie ahead. The same can not be said or his challenger.

It’s tough to argue with the amazing men and women that took their time away from the good life in order to fight this war and win.

It is an immeasurable distinction between these heroes and the swill that sits in congress and plays games with our nation’s security.

Succinctly: EXCELLENT!

People like this should never have been placed in the positions of power they are all in right now.

The tragedy is that these critters were duly elected, same as the right-thinking members of Congress. They are the legitimate reps of their constituents. Either their constituents are too stupid to be allowed to vote, we accept the inevitable downfall of our beloved Republic or we re-organize the landscape to let the moon-bat lovers elect their own moon-bat government. Thoughts?

Just wait until the Three Stooges (Biden, Hagel and Obambi) visit Iraq and Afghanistan. Look for some great spin on how things are going terribly. Look for interviews with libs who have been in that country stirring up defeatist attitudes. Look for CNN, MSNBC and their partners in crime to desperately try to spin the issues and say things like Bush’s war is one of America’s biggest blunders in history.
The Dims are generally defeatists with a mental disorder reflected in the upcoming comments by the Three Stooges mentioned above. Get ready for it.

Travis1 on July 16, 2008 at 10:57 AM

I actually think the Dem stupidity/duplicity is even worst that commonly suspected.

Let us not forget who the big chest thumpers were for the Yugoslavia campaign, Serbia, Croatia etc–the Dems. Why? Because Clinton was a Democrat. People such as myself were against the intervention, not because I didn’t want it to stop, I wanted Europe to spend its treasure and spill its blood. But no, the French and Clinton had no problem with ignoring the UN.

Fast forward to 9/11. Bush is a Repub. I put it to you, had Gore been President and everything else remained the same the Dems would be the conflict’s biggest supporters with the MSM in tow regaling us with humanitarian footage. The only difference would be the majority of Repubs would be supporting Gore and the war.

That is the major difference between the parties. The Dems openly piss on the dead for naked political power. Horse whipping is too good for them.

For you doubters out there read all the floor speeches the Dems shouted out about Saddam when they thought Gore was going to President. OH, they were going to kick his ass.

patrick neid on July 16, 2008 at 11:15 AM

We are well on the way to victory over the terrorists, now it is time to turn our attention to America’s other enemies, the MSM and the Democrats. Defeat them soundly this fall, America.

“WHAT? The surge WORKED?” ACK!!!

“Ok, ok,wait.. I know. Get Biden to say the bad guys aren’t in Iraq and say something like Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. We’ll recycle that one.. yeah, yeah, THAT’s the ticket”.

Well, yes Joe, the bad guys aren’t in Iraq anymore.
