Report: Absolute Moral Authority drops the N-bomb on Obama tape; Update: O’Reilly blames Internet “weasel” for leak

Normally I’d wait for video proof but Inside Cable News claimed with unusual insistence last night that it’s true and now TV Newser is corroborating it, so obviously someone who’s in a position to know is leaking. The alleged offending quote:

Barack…he’s talking down to black people…telling n—s how to behave.

Eh. Yeah, as the boss notes, he’s a total hypocrite, but the left loves to punish conservatives for preaching virtue while occasionally failing to live up to their own standards and I’m reluctant to do the same to Jackson. He slipped, but his intent wasn’t bad — just as the New Yorker’s wasn’t, I hasten to add — and his attempt to get entertainers to rein in their N-bomb usage is salutary. Where he does go too far is in flirting with criminalizing the word. He told the Today Show two years ago that public utterances should qualify as hate speech and he’s asserted before, quite matter-of-factly, that the word is unprotected by the First Amendment, presumably per the “fighting words” exception. Somebody, quick — arrest that man.

O’Reilly was just on Shep Smith’s show talking about this, but it looks like he’s saving the tape for the Factor tonight. I’ll go watch and see if anything he said warrants an update. In the meantime, here’s a sneak preview from last year of what’s sure to be Jackson’s defense: That not even he is immune from internalized degradation and the ugly “I want to cut his nuts off” thoughts to which it leads. In any case, he’s old news. Even his kid thinks so.

Update: O’Reilly tells Shep that he felt he had no choice but to address the rest of the tape now that some unnamed Internet “weasel” is publishing the details. Take a bow, TV Newser! Belated exit question: By O’R’s logic, doesn’t that give Fox an incentive to leak the tape? “Oops — it’s out there. Now we have to show it and do a whole new ratings blockbuster news cycle on it.”

It’s obviously not the same when a black person says it. It may be wrong but it certainly has no racism in it.

freevillage on July 16, 2008 at 3:31 PM

So, in your opinion, black people have a lower standard for their behavior? Sounds like a racist opinion to me.

I never knew MLK marched for the right to restrict the N-word to just being used by black people.

When libs degrade minorities by lowering the standards of behavior based on race, it shows their true contempt for the people of that race. When all people are held to the same standard, then there is no racism.

JayHaw Phrenzie on July 16, 2008 at 4:24 PM

Hmmm… sodomy?

Apparently you know more about the British or the sodomy than I do. At any case, I’ve made my point.

A potentially golden opportunity for Obama to slam Jessie’s head into a turnbuckle on live TV, which Team Messiah may calculate could help the Lightworker among bitter guns-n-bibles clinging rubes in flyover land.

O’Reilly just lost a lot of respect from me by his attempt to hide the truth when you knew this was going to come out. Why the heck didn’t he just publish and address this when it first came out?

JeffinSac on July 16, 2008 at 4:26 PM

So if Jackson hates white people, and hates teh Joos, but not black folk, who he calls “N_____s,” then he’s just 2/3 racist, just not a complete racist?

Depends if he also asked for a cheeburga and a Pepsi.

O’Reilly tells Shep that he felt he had no choice but to address the rest of the tape

Is o’reilly in charge of everything at fox news? I was under the impression that jackson was taping some other show. Why is o’reilly acting like he is the one making the decision to show the tape? And how the hell is the entire tape not newsworthy? This race pimp who has gotten wealthy shaking down innocent corporations with his extortion game needs to be exposed. What else is being hidden from us by our media?

peacenprosperity on July 16, 2008 at 4:26 PM

I don’t know about that. I just know this. Only the stupidest moron (which unfortunately includes scores of HA contributors) can think that when a black comedian uses the word “nigger”, he actually uses it as a racial putdown.

Have you heard Chris Rock’s riff on this? I think it disproves your point.

O’Reilly is by far the biggest jerk and hypocrite at Fox… Almost equal to his buddy with the leg tingles over at CNN or MSNBC or wherever he is. Despite him OCCASSIONALLY arguing for some conservative principles, I got sick of him and started turning FOX news off, even before I got sick of Shep and Colmes etc. and started turning them off.

As to Jackson, why would anyone care? Everyone in the country with even double digit IQs has known precisely what he is for decades.

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Hey, Freevillage the Village Maroon - read closely. See if perhaps some glimmer of intellect buried under that Kool-Aid soaked empty soul of yours catches a glimpse of the reason WHY Jackson probably shouldn’t be using that word, regardless of his own skin color:

Jesse Jackson calls for Seinfeld boycott

Posted Nov 28th 2006 4:14PM by Julia Ward

If you’ve been following the Michael Richards apology tour, you know that the actor made an appearance on the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s Keep Hope Alive radio program in which he claimed to be “shattered” by his own remarks. That wasn’t good enough for the Rev. The day after Richards’ appearance, Jackson called for a boycott of the recent seventh season Seinfeld DVD release to punish the actor where it really hurts - the pocketbook.

Jackson also called for an end to the use of the “N-word” by all people - including hip-hop artists and black comedians.

That’s just priceless stuff there, Freevillage the Village Maroon. Priceless. Pure hypocrite gold.

Ironically, what you don’t get is that JACKSON specifically HIMSELF notes that BLACKS are being racist to use the word. Not the “all people.”

That’s Jackson’s standard. His call. Are you starting to get yourself a clue yet.

Professor Blather on July 16, 2008 at 4:31 PM

The word that Jesse was saying is nigga.. completely differant from nigger. (lets all grow up here.. I’ll say ‘n-word’ in front of my 5 year old..)

nigger is the word he wants criminalized.. Rappers and entertainers can say nigga’s all they want..
Only Jesse knows the difference.

wise_man on July 16, 2008 at 4:32 PM

So, in your opinion, black people have a lower standard for their behavior? Sounds like a racist opinion to me.

Uhm… *Banging head against the wall* sorry, back with you now.

No, what you have described is not my opinion. My opinion is that “a standard” that you refer to isn’t universal. It’s a function of a culture. For example, many people here are part of a culture, where attacking irrelevant countries is considered acceptable and noble and saying the word “fuck” isn’t. Personally, I belong to a completely different culture. Note that how you look at my culture from within yours or vice versa is beside the point.

The word “nigger” is not considered an insult inside a large part of the black community. People are raised to pay little attention to the word. People hear it every day. And so on and so forth. This may not be the best thing for the black people in terms of how others view their (sub)culture. That’s also beside the point. The point is this.

Jesse Jackson, who is a part of the black community, hasn’t insulted anybody within the black community. Nobody got hurt. Nobody will need therapy.

freevillage on July 16, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Castration was a punishment used by Trans-Atlantic slave traders and by the Jim Crow-era white Supremacists
castration was and is Standard Operating Procedure for the Arab-Muslim slave trade perpetrated against black Africans.

I believe Jackson’s comments were first noticed by a lowly transcriber, who sent the info to a producer from O’Reilly’s show who was on vacation at the time but that initial contact put the tape into O’Reilly’s realm.

Gilda on July 16, 2008 at 4:34 PM

wise_man on July 16, 2008 at 4:28 PM

How is it splitting hairs? He’s not Jewish or white.

The words and the speaker are inseparable. If your spouse says “darling, I love you” you’ll react one way. If however, say, Andrew Sullivan says those exact same words to you (assuming you’re a heterosexual male), you’ll react a different way because the words have a different connotation coming from Randy Andy.

It’s not a perfect analogy, but I hopes that it helps.

IMO, the issue is not racism, but power.

If a white public figure says something that can be exploited by the grievence mongers (Imus for example), Jesse and Al, will milk it for all its worth. But if Jesse himself says the actual N-word or if a Senator with agreeable politics is an actual KKK member, it’s no big deal.

It’s all about milking that “white guilt” for all the power they can.

Bishop on July 16, 2008 at 4:47 PM

taking what you said to one conclusion..

You can’t take anything to one conclusion. That’s not how logic works. Logic works as follows:

If we establish that BOTH

A

AND

A->B

are true, then you can imply B.

In simpler words, we must agree both on assumptions and an implication (or logical connection) in order to come to the same conclusions.

Now, what is the logical connection that you assume to be a given?

freevillage on July 16, 2008 at 4:47 PM

That proves he’s a hypocrite. Indeed, he should pick his stance and stick with it.

It doesn’t prove he’s a racist.

freevillage on July 16, 2008 at 4:36 PM

Actually, what it proves is that you’re in dire need of a basic class in logic.

You spelled your point out precisely: “But it’s manifestly acceptable within what may be called a black subculture, to call one another “niggers.”

Yet Jackson specifically, explicitly, takes exactly the opposite stance.

Which is interesting since a) he’s Black, b) he’s actually part of the culture that you already acknowledged having nothing to do with, and c) he’s the one who’s purportedly working to advance civil rights within said culture.

So who’s right? Jackson - or you? Can’t be both of you, Sparky.

Are you honestly missing just how entertainingly you’ve stuck yourself in a logical conundrum?

Carry on. I’d pay good money to watch you continue digging. It’s pretty good.

————-

By the way, anybody know if there’s any actual truth to what James Mtume is saying about what Jackson actually said? (Google it if you’re curious - it’s pretty bad). Has this been formally debunked?

They seem pretty excited about it at DailyKos (and the fact that it was “reported” there suggests its just gossip …)

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 4:46 PM

I will cut and paste part of the post I wrote on a phrase which I think, has a similar unconscious thought process behind it, “white n*ggers,” since, the last time I directed persons to my blog for an explanation, they seemed have problems with. BTW, Ed linked to this post before. Here goes:

Every time I hear the term “white n*gger” used, I always marvel at the lack of insight demonstrated by the user—and sometimes by the targets of the epithet. The user always tries to pretend that it isn’t a racial slur against blacks, because he/she is talking about white people, you see. He always forgets—if he ever knew—that even when the word used with a modifier, it is always about blacks.

Hey, my white brothers and sisters! Don’t you want to be a n*gger or even called one? Why not? Because, for some of you, as “low” as you may perceive yourselves to be, there’s always a group that’s “lower” than you: we actual “n*ggers,” Version 1.0. The phrase, the insult, is intended to put working-class whites and blacks on the same “social level.” And some of the former, the ones who still subconsciously buy into the notion that whites are on a higher social level than blacks and, therefore, who say in their heart-of-hearts “at least I’m not a n*gger” will object to this phrase most strenuously.

“White trash” conjures this division also. If not, why even use the adjective ‘white?’

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:04 PM

I am a firm believer that most of us are racist and that it is natural and not a bad thing. The word has been so overused that the definition has little to do with what it really means. To be racist, to me, means having pride in one’s race. The sad thing is, all other races are allowed to have pride in their race except for white people. If we have pride in being white, we are harsh animals of hatred. But blacks and Hispanics are encouraged to embrace their race. I say enough is enough! It is time for white people to walk unashamed down the street. It is time for heterosexuals to unite and ask for equal rights! We men should get in touch with our manliness and all other manly things like shooting stuff and being sloppy. Yes, white people, it is time to Embrace your Race.

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 5:04 PM

I think that Robert Byrd said something similar.

wise_man on July 16, 2008 at 4:58 PM

Byrd said, “there are a lot of White n-words”

What i;m saying is, Both words are equally offensive.

Chakra Hammer on July 16, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Isn’t all of this getting a little old?

JJ, Sr. was never a part of the campaign — JJ, Jr. (who’s already thrown Dad under the bus) is (remember his spiel about Hillary’s tears in NH being a dis because she didn’t cry for the Katrina “victims” in NO?)

JJ, Sr. is expandable and useful (as is O’Reilly), in keeping the campaign focused on one thing: RACE.

Let’s not discuss how BO is the farthest left candidate of socialist, Marxist and pro-Islam theory that the Dems could possibly have nominated. Hey, as the NYT’s encourages us in their nifty little polls, let’s talk about RACE, and whether JJ, Sr. used the “n” word!

Nichevo on July 16, 2008 at 5:06 PM

“White trash” conjures this division also. If not, why even use the adjective ‘white?’

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:04 PM

Thanks for taking the time Baldi. I follow most of it but I still will have to disagree with you if you are implying that blacks should/would or could be offended when they hear “white trash”. I am having a hard time understanding that. But thanks for the effort and I agree with you most of the time.

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 5:07 PM

Hey, my white brothers and sisters! Don’t you want to be a n*gger or even called one?

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:04 PM

Uhh no thanks.. i’ll take “white trash”

Chakra Hammer on July 16, 2008 at 5:10 PM

ehh.. since they are the same i guess it doesn’t matter..

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 5:07 PM

Fixed for what I’m implying. “Would” and “could” are irrelevant.

Blacks should be offended because the phrase implies that a “non-trashy” white is above blacks, when no one is above or below anyone due to race alone.

Question: why hasn’t the phrase “black trash” caught on?

I am curious you say when a black uses the word nigger to another black it is not with a racist intent but whenb a white/hispanic/asian person uses the same word to a black person it is automatically meant to be with a racist intent? so now you are a mind reader or maybe the Shadow (who knows what evil lurks in a man’s heart..the Shadow knows)?
The fact is words are just words regardless of who uses them..it is the way a person hears it and processes it that decides if it is an insult. The problem with modern society is we are all supposed to be so worried about offenduing another person we are stilling free speech. If a person wants to use a word in a hateful or demeaning way they just show their true character..words do not wound unless we allow them to…I have no respect for Jesse Jackson and the culture of victimhood that pervades this country but his use of any word does not matter to me one bit. People in this world need to grow up.

JKotthoff on July 16, 2008 at 5:20 PM

Jackson is obviously angry at the White half of Obama (he has a White mother). A Black man can’t “talk down” to Black men, can he?

jgapinoy on July 16, 2008 at 5:21 PM

What if you are listening to the radio and you hear the word spoken and you don’t know if the speaker is black or white? How do you know if you are supposed to be offended or not?

Good question. I try to capture the speaker’s…

(OMFG! Drumroll! [new] fr3sh thinking!!1)

INTENT.

If someone hits you, it matters a lot to any minimally reasonable person (including at least 15% of HA contributors) what was the person’s intent. Was it an accident, in which case a dialogue of the kind:

- Oh, so sorry!
- Not a problem.

would be a reasonable conclusion. Or was it a murder attempt in which case one would be justified to use hands or even a weapon in retaliation.

I mean, seriously. Imagine that! The same physical action, which is judged based on a (possibly complex) set of circumstances accompanying a particular situation.

Who would have thunk words could be treated similarly?

Answer: because you have “nigger”.

Please refrain from correcting my grammar and word use. It is your passive-aggressive way of trying to insult me.

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 5:24 PM

A Black man can’t “talk down” to Black men

If a Black can’t be racist, as Jackson & his ilk insist, then he can’t “talk down” either.

jgapinoy on July 16, 2008 at 5:24 PM

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:15 PM

Huh…..? It just implies that those whites are trash and need to take a shower and get a job(thats how i see it, nothing to do with blacks, Asians or “Hispanics” at all)

“black trash” imho is the “n-word” that has been wrongly glorified by the pop culture..

What are you talking about? I didn’t correct your grammar. And you gave three options; I picked the one that was correct.

BTW, I’m never passive-aggressive. Only aggressive. Lose the chip.

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:28 PM

We’re just muddying the water folks. How about, a guy who has made a living pretending to be morally superior to everyone has proven himself to be the lowlife we all knew he was. Who cares about who may have been offended, who wasn’t offended, who has a right to be offended, blah, balh, blah. This is just like barry and his racists church. Everyone else argued about his motivations while barry just slipped away. That should have been the end of his candidacy but everyone was busy argueing about meaning and now a guy who spent 20 years attending a racist church will probably be president.

And when the epithet is used by non-blacks, it has no class differential and has the concept of “trash” built in. So the phrase “black trash” is unnecessary.

The word ‘trash’ by itself–without the user, the context, the words around it and the (grammatical) object being described–is, indeed, just garbage.

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:46 PM

Oh yeah and the culture and/or subculture also.

baldilocks on July 16, 2008 at 5:47 PM

Jesse Jackson, who is a part of the black community, hasn’t insulted anybody within the black community. Nobody got hurt. Nobody will need therapy.

freevillage on July 16, 2008 at 4:32 PM

No, as ubiquitous as that word is within the hip-hop generation, that word does insult a lot of folks within the black community, and it is surely not something tossed around by supposed moral authority figures. If Fox strings this out, it will slowly bleed Jackson’s tarnished star, and not a year too soon. He hasn’t been this pathetic since rushing to Terri Schiavo’s side, camera’s running, a day late to boot.

carbon_footprint on July 16, 2008 at 5:52 PM

baldilocks, what about referring to people as “scum” or scummy.

I referred to the people who called Tony Snow bad names the other day as Scum..

Is Scum also racist or could it be perceived as a racist word?

Chakra Hammer on July 16, 2008 at 5:57 PM

I never have understood the kneejerk reaction to the “n” word, in the first place.

In my estimation, it’s nothing more than an another excuse to be “outraged” same as the “outrage” over cartoons.

As an Italian (hyphenated) American, and a German (hyphenated) American, and an Irish (hyphenated) American, you KNOW how many times I’ve been called derogatory names.

Nevertheless, I’ve never been “outraged” about it…Fact is, it’s even laughable…I just consider the source.

franksalterego on July 16, 2008 at 5:59 PM

I think we should have evolved past this racism by now, but apparently there’s more to us than meets the eye.

The identity groups that overwhelmingly vote Democrat are the NAACP, La Raza, Nambla and Code Pink. Why can’t they embrace the diversity of whites, Christians, or Koreans?
