The obligatory “Brit Hume stepping down at Fox News” post

Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of “Special Report.” They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.
In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, anchor special events, serve as a panelist on “Fox News Sunday” and occasionally substitute for the host, Chris Wallace.
He’ll be there through the end of the year so election night coverage should proceed as usual. I’m always surprised by how much respect Hume commands among conservatives, not because he doesn’t deserve it but because you’d think he’d be drowned out by the O’Reilly and Hannity megaphones. Not so; in my conversations with people, as genial, gentlemanly conservative journalists go, he’s second in esteem to no one but … Tony Snow, actually. Where are Fox viewers going to get their nightly shot of gravitas now? The closest to Hume in that regard is Wallace but I doubt he wants to do five shows a week. Bret Baier is solid but he’s not a trademark FNC personality the way the rest of the late afternoon and evening crew is.
Given how short the supply is of hard-newsy TV reporters with star power, I’m guessing they may tweak the show by cutting back on straight news reporting (they have Shep at 7 p.m. for that) and emphasize the panel format more heavily, a la Hardball. That way there’s less pressure on the moderator and they get to inject something new into that calcified 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. line-up that they’ve had forever. Commenters in our Headlines item are suggesting Ingraham and Mark Steyn, both of whom would be great but are probably too overtly partisan for the task. Any suggestions?

Oh, no you didn’t!
As for FNC and succession, Chris Wallace is the only one even close to qualified. How ironic would it be for Faux News, bane of all that is Moonbat, to be anchored by a Democrat, albeit a Democrat who sees through their pathetic neuroses.
Jaibones on July 15, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Oh, this is devastating news. Special Report has always been my favorite and I love to watch Brit give Juan Williams a hard time on Fox News Sunday. Although, Juan has really been shocking me lately with his criticisms of Obama; maybe there’s hope for him yet.
Mark Steyn is good, but I think they would have to change the format a bit. Bret Baier and Jim Angle both do a good job covering for Brit but I don’t know that they would be good permanently. This is a hard one. Mark Levin would stir things up, ha!

Hume is second to none because he’s an unapologetic Conservative (why apologize when your right), nothing neo there.

It isn’t always about policy, sometimes class takes the front seat in a conservatives life.
Brit Hume has class, as did Tony Snow.
right2bright on July 15, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Bummer indeed. Brit Hume is a class act.
Michael Steele would make a good replacement, but he’s needed right now at the RNC. Laura Ingraham would also fit the bill, but she already has a show at 5 PM, although she would get more viewers at 6 PM.
How about Cal Thomas?

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m getting just a tad fed up with Fox News, with O’Reilly and Rivera being at the top of the list. Can’t get the picture of Shep standing on the bridge in ‘Nawlins screeming for FEMA – Hannity pandering to just about everybody and flirting with plagerism. Well, that leaves Greta, Faulkner, E.D. Hill, and Megan Kelly – none of whom have the credentials to pull off that hour, and they’ve not seriously groomed any of the guys to fill the spot, to their shame. Sorry, Bret Hume cannot retire! I refuse to even entertain the idea.

No one has mentioned Neil Cavuto? I know he is probably kind of busy with the new Fox Business thing, but I like his style and he doesn’t often take crap from people. Otherwise, give me John Gibson or Chris Wallace.

Maybe it’s time for Juliet Huddy, Jill Dobson, Megyn Kelly, Laura Ingraham, Molly Henneberg, and Courtney Friel to host the evening news in one big beautiful put-together crew. Putting the fox in Fox News. It would be like, you know, Fox News showing its commiment to feminist empowerment and stuff. And maybe they could read the news in bikinis to show that even though we are Republicans and conservatives we’re not like hung up on our bodies, which should be natural and free, you know?

You’re onto something AP. No offense to Rush, but Brit Hume has been “America’s Anchorman” for a long time now.
lol. Hopefully FNC has enough sense not to replace Brit with The Mustache.
bigbeas on July 15, 2008 at 7:32 PM
I don’t watch fox news as much as I used to but when I do watch news, I tune into them. I liked Brit Hume.
I also think one of their better news anchors is John Gibson. I also tend to like: Gretchen Carlson and Steve Doocy, Martha Macallum, Michelle Malkin, Megyn Kelly, John Kasich, Newt Gingrich. I don’t see E.D. Hill as much but I liked her as well.
I find revolting (and main reason why I cut my watching time there): geraldo rivera, susan estrich, colmes, ellis hennican, terry keenan, jennie backus, bob beckel, jane hall, half the guests on the o’reilly show lol, and fox’s two male doctors that they have on there are pathetic..especially that dr. manny. I’ve often come across manny’s medical opinions to be incorrect and hope people research some of his advice before taking it.

And no way could Rivera fill in, I have stopped watching most of Fox as it is, Brit’s show was the last redeeming factor. Bret and Jim are good replacements, I agree.

MrC_5150 on July 15, 2008 at 8:16 PM
Ugh. This is very bad news. I hassled my cable company years ago to add Fox News after watching an interview Tim Russert did with Brit Hume about “Special Report” during the Clinton impeachment saga. Brit’s obvious joy in the job and pride in what his show was delivering was palpable. I wanted to see what it was like. Once the cable company put it on the lineup (in early 2001), I never looked back. Brit’s show is the one I never fail to tape and watch if I can’t see it live. Since Tony Snow left Fox News Sunday, I’ve enjoyed the program most when Brit fills in as the moderator. If he’s not in the panel mixing it up with Juan, etc. it’s just not the same.
Bret Baier is a nice guy and seems very comfortable as anchor. Brian Wilson has great charm and Wendell Goler has an unflappable manner combined with dry humor. Jim Angle is very competent and has a great sense of humor. Chris Wallace is competent and seems to enjoy the job. James Rosen is pleasant. Eric Shawn is nerdy but he delights in kicking over rocks at the U.N. None of them are Brit. Sadly, Tony Snow was one of the few people that I think could have taken over for Brit. Well, at least Brit will stay through the election.
Jill1066 on July 15, 2008 at 8:26 PM
Let’s put this in some perspective. I lamented Tony Snow leaving Fox News Sunday but Chris Wallace has done okay.
The biggest problem/challenge for FNC IMO is that it has become stale and predictable. They used to debate issues with real people with real opinions. Now they trot out Geraldo to debate immigration with Bill O’Reilly. Hannity and Colmes is worthless. Greta’s show should be on the “E” channel since it is nothing more than tabloid television.
I’d suggest that this personnel change is a perfect time to reformat the entire line-up and freshen it up for the current environment.
highhopes on July 15, 2008 at 8:43 PM
Luke Russert.
Valiant on July 15, 2008 at 8:47 PM
Nobody I’ve seen on Fox to fill Hume’s shoes. I think they’d have to go outside the channel to fill his spot.
Ailes better think twice about altering the show too much: Special Report is all they have in the way of a serious, non-sensationalized (incl. political) news show. I don’t care if no one watches the darn thing; they give that show away, there’s nothing to recommend them as a serious news network anymore. (Sorry. And I’m not counting Fox News Sunday in this equation as it’s a once-a-week affair, and could exist on its own if it had to, without a 24-hour news network behind it.)
RD on July 15, 2008 at 8:58 PM
As I said in the headline but I want to go on record here:
Dang. Mr. Hume is one of the guys that if I were in a “Make a Wish Moment” would like to join for dinner, adult beverages and cigars. The others at the table would be: Mr. Krauthammer, Mr. Juan Williams (really!!!), and El Rushbo. How would that be for a evening event?
Dingbat63 on July 15, 2008 at 9:04 PM
Shoot. There goes my dream of “Special Report” being carried on all Fox affiliates, thereby killing off the drive-by networks’ newscasts out of business for good.

franksalterego on July 15, 2008 at 9:25 PM
I feel one MUST have a TiVo to watch FoxNews any more. I record Special Report and watch it every day. I record the medical segment at 10:30 every Sunday morning and watch it. I record O’Reilly but skip past most of it, especially whenever I see Geraldo. I gave up on H&C, I can’t stand Colmes at all.
If I’m home during the day I may have it on as background noise, but don’t pay a lot of attention to it. I watch a bit of the morning show before I go to work. There are so many libs on FoxNews that I can’t stand to really watch it. As much as I like Laura Ingraham I skipped pst a lot of her show, too. She put these leftists on and let them blab on and on and on….
I already miss Brit.

I’m sorry the guy is too boring. And his fair and balanced panel is just too much of a joke.

I think Major Garrett is great – I could see him as a senior anchor for the network someday.
Dork B. on July 15, 2008 at 9:42 PM
Get outta my head. That was my exact first thought on clicking that link, I look at the comments, yours was the first on top of the second page.
AP, I’ve long had Hume, Wallace, and Russert as the three last of the ‘real’ journalists in the business. One is now gone, one stepping down, and the third mightn’t be willing? My vote is for Laura, yeah, she’s partisian, but she’s also a hard-hitting interviewer. She wouldn’t let people on either side get away with the garbage they all try to do. As for Juan, I’ve always seen him as a (dare I say it?) open minded kind of liberal, not one to drink the Koolaid just for its own sake. Shep? Hellno to him as well. He just bugs, almost as much as Ted Baxter.

Well, there goes the last reason to tune into FOX on a daily basis. (Looking at vapid blondes read the news or discuss holds little interest for me… At least if they are dressed. ;-)
And since when Michelle does a guest spot the clip is usually posted here, I might as well just get rid of the TVs all together.
LegendHasIt on July 15, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Special Report is the only solid news show (national and international) on TV, to my knowledge. Brit Hume brings his own low-key charm, gentle humor, and conservative wisdom to the show, and that will be irreplaceable. I can see where a daily news-anchor gig is a grind, plus all the election specials he does, but I hope he changes his mind and sticks around for another year or two.
What I could see happening is Brett Baier (sp?) taking over, and Britt doing a daily commentary, like Eric Severeid used to do on Walter Cronkite’s CBS Evening News, but longer—maybe even a discussion (not just interview) segment with various guests.
Mark Steyn is way too good a writer to be shackled to TV or radio. Laura is wonderful, but too intense for a show like Special Report.
Face it: except for Special Report, Fox is mostly tabloid news and news babes. They really need to preserve that one island of (hate to use this word) ‘gravitas’ that I can recommend to people.
MrLynn on July 15, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Tammy Bruce would keep the libs stirred up… Bring in Coulter once a week for truth telling.
Travis1 on July 15, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Ha ha ha!
That would make Fox News, Fair and Unbalanced.
Kini on July 15, 2008 at 10:39 PM
I know Brit is a conservative, but he almost never lets that opinion leak out of his mouth. He simply reports the news (he is closer to Huntley/Brinkley/Murrow, et al, than any other newscaster today. None of them are fit to shine his shoes, although Chris Wallace is doing a damn fine job trying.
The reason Brit will be missed so badly is because he would be the last anchor to try to tell us how we should feel about a subject through his own nuanced presentation of the news. He has no opinion whatsoever in his presentation. He merely asks the questions on both sides of any equation or subject, and then lets the pundits talk for 20 mins. When they go so far outside the lines of common sense (ala Juan Williams or Mort Kondracke), Brit kicks them back in the box and lets them continue within the lines of common sense and scientific fact.
Simply stated, Brit may have been conservative, bt he never let his conservative views prevent him from asking hard questions and being absolutely fair with his subjects. Only facts mattered. Joe Friday couldn’t do a better job.
Brit cannot be replaced. The last of the fair and balanced and unopinionated anchors is now leaving. I hope Chris Wallace can try to be completely fair and balanced and attempt to fill the very large shoes left by Brit’s departure.

What if there was a moderator like Angle, Baier, or Brian Wilson and then the panel would be Laura Ingraham, Michelle, Glenn Beck, Rush (as if), Mark Levin (maybe two at a time on a rotation basis). There are other talk-show conservatives too… Neal Boortz, etc. Anyway, mix them up with Fox resident lefties.
It’s like wishing for Santa Claus!
Oink on July 16, 2008 at 12:05 AM
The only reason I took cable was FNC, and the only reason I took FNC was Brit.
Like others noted above, Brit & Krauthammer are the only reason I watch. Tony Snow was good too, and coming on the heels of his passing, this is another punch in the ribs. Bret Baer, Jim Angle, Brian Gibson are all good, and certainly preferable to dweebs like Wallace, Hannity, O’Reilly, Geraldo.
If he wants to stop carrying the burden of Special Report, Brit and Charles should become regular roundtable participants, or Brit should bat on Fridays. Among the panelists, Mort is somewhat okay, but Fred is too much of a Koolaid drinker, much like Hannity. Mara is intelligent as far as Liberals can be, but Juan Williams is insufferable.
Female anchors? How about Laurie Dhue, Patty-Ann Brown? Incidentally, is Kiran Chetry still around?

Yeah, I don’t get the pre-occupation with the “eye candy” as a valid replacement for good journalism. I guess HA doesn’t screen for immature teenage boys.
Michelle does great, but she lets her personal feelings get in the way. We’d be seeing lots more of her if she would have ignored Bill O’s handling of the spitting incident and let it roll off her back. Anyone who matters knows she has more class in her pinkie than Gerry has in his entire liberal body. I’m hoping that one of these days someone will give her a show and let her loose.

Gosh csdeven, that would a great suggestion to include in your memo to Roger, over a FAUX…!
I’ve come to the conclusion Roger thinks; that’s the only way he can get folks to watch, teenagers and olde geezers, alike!
J_Gocht on July 16, 2008 at 8:17 AM
Monica Crowley, Newt Gingrich, Tammy Bruce, Megyn Kelly, John Gibson would all be good. Michelle Malkin would be great because she would keep the immigration issue front and center. Newt knows where all the skeletons are in DC and would be able to cast a light in that swamp of corruption that Nancy was supposed to cleanup when she became speaker. Monica Crowley is terrific.
If Fox really wanted to take this to the next level, they would have one of these women run the show.
And speaking of John Gibson, whatever happened to him on his 5 pm show? Is he just on fox radio now?
And whatever happened to Laura Ingrahams show? that was on for a couple of weeks and she disappeared.

Fox seems a little too balanced at times. I’ve listened to enough guest and host (Geraldo) idiots that I’ve almost stopped watching Fox… except for Brit. [sigh]
What about a conservative TV news outlet? Anyone? Please…?
ROFL!!! Oh, you were serious… [sigh]

No doubt. He is one of my favorites of all time. I liked it when the MSM rumor mill had him and Meygan Kelly having an affair. Once again, his steady way made them look like fools yet again.

Geraldo is too ate up with that debilitating affliction known as Latinitis. Rodger is too smart for that.

Brit Hume…
bar none the most credible person reporting news on television today.
Figure out a replacement FOX…it better be good!
