Reporter to Bush: Why don’t you formally inform our moron public that they should use less gas?

If we can’t be trusted to glean satirical intent from an over-the-top New Yorker cover, how can we be trusted to buy less of something when the price goes up? It’s Daddy President 101, with the added nuance of the media demanding a catalyzing call for action from a guy with an approval rating south of 30 whom they assure us no one in their right mind takes seriously. If he had issued some sort of formal statement inspiring the predictable semi-snarky headlines (“Bush: Conserving Energy Is a Good Thing”), the nutroots would have goofed on him for his chimplike mastery of the obvious and Slate’s ultra-keen “Bushisms” feature could have knocked off early. But look on the bright side. Next year, we’ll be treated to headlines like, “Obama: Turn Off the Light When You Leave a Room.”

Bush’s approval rating might be averaging at about 30 or 31, but the last time I saw numbers for the media they were in the teens. This kind of stuff is why.

Terrye on July 15, 2008 at 4:45 PM

You would think the president would encourage the people to be smart about energy use. I heard there were these things called leadership and common sense. But no - he shrugs it off saying people will figure it out for themselves. Amazing.

And could Bush look any more disinterested in everything he does? He’s just counting the days until he’s done, and by the faraway look on his face it couldn’t possibly come soon enough.

Still, the votes of the American people do indirectly elect the president.

kara26/ross -

Ohhhhhhhh, I get it now! Those thousands of people who are stupid enough destroy their own lives with a high risk mortgage aren’t too stupid to know to use less gas, turn down the thermostat, get a better toilet or buy better light bulbs. Right.

You confuse leadership with lecturing and common sense with hand holding, but that’s not surprising, coming from a typical chest-thumping government-stay-outta-my-face clown.

Amazing indeed. That is a Lib in a nutshell - just waiting to be told what to do because they’re too freaking stupid to make a move without a government official giving them directions.

Equally idiotic, they, think that they can conserve their way out of this situation, which is akin to telling people to eat less during a famine (instead of looking for ways to increase food supply).

As I understand Capitalism, it’s a Supply and Demand thingy. As the demand increases and the supply decreases the price goes up. And when the idiots in the Government insert themselves in the equation to keep the free market from operating (getting more supply to fill the demand) or a word that every socialist/communist/marxist hates competition will fix the lack of supply…but we have a group in Washington that knows much better than the Free Market…

The fact is, the unwashed masses of any country are very, very simple and they need information in order to make smarter choices about how they live. If the president can inspire people to conserve energy, wtf is your problem with that? In your case, perhaps the truth that you’re a potential energy pig is too much for your fragile ego to handle.

(Hmmm. Why did America spoon feed its citizens a 55 mph speed limit? But I digress)

And I never said America could conserve its way out of its current problem. Not sure which of your orifices you pulled that out of.

Hmmm… and whats truly sad??? I seem to remember that in Bush’s last big energy speech awhile back, he DID talk about conserving energy as part of the overall plan.

Does he mention it EVERY speech? No… but he HAS talked about it in the past…

But it was Bush talking, so none of the Libs were listening… he was not saying what they expected to hear, and so did not hear it.

Drill here, Drill now, drill EVERYWHERE, and keep that money in America!

Dave Rywall on July 15, 2008 at 4:47 PM

That’s because you have the anti-Christian worldview. Americans don’t believe in telling citizens what they can or cannot do with their own property. Respect for private property, such as the gasoline or electricity you have PURCHASED and paid taxes on, is YOUR private property and nobody has any business telling you what to do with it.

All real Americans understand this cornerstone of freedom and respect private property. Socialist with the collectivist worldview don’t understand this. And countries where this collectivist worldview dominates have no freedom.

I think Ann said it best:

The ethic of conservation is the explicit abnegation of man’s dominion over the Earth. The lower species are here for our use. God said so: Go forth, be fruitful, multiply, and rape the planet–it’s yours. That’s our job: drilling, mining and stripping. Sweaters are the anti-Biblical view. Big gas-guzzling cars with phones and CD players and wet bars — that’s the Biblical view.

Ann Coulter - October 2000
On Environmentalism

The answer is to simply make more of what is needed, which in this case is energy. We have an unlimited supply of energy believe it or not, energy is neither created or destroyed. Drilling is the answer not conservation. Conservation will never bring a robust economy and will only lead us into a worst situation than the current one.

It’s actually not only an economic issue, it’s a security issue, we should have never allowed ourselves to be dependent on foreign oil in the first place. There is no energy shortage, there is only a shortage of production.

Oh, I get it. You yourself are not “simple” but most Americans are, so they need specific instructions as to how to conserve energy. The fact that their heating/cooling bills are higher, or that it costs them twice as much to fill up their vehicles with gas is insufficient information for the dullards who just can’t make the connection for themselves.

As for whether or not you specifically said that we should conserve our way out of this problem, that’s what the Democrat party is telling us (along with really helpful solutions like waiting for the wind and telling us that drilling is a “hoax”) but hey, maybe you’re a maverick and have other ideas. …get a better toilet or buy better light bulbs…

Dave Rywall on July 15, 2008 at 5:15 PM

Depends on your definition of “better.” If by “better,” you mean a toilet that doesn’t move enough water with enough force to make the poo go down the hole, then I guess I am indeed too stupid to buy one of those useless things unless the government forces me to. Same with the CFL bulbs, which I was “smart” enough to put in hard-to-reach fixtures in places where I wouldn’t be using them to read by. But I am indeed too stupid to buy them for my work lamps and reading lamps and art project lamps without the government forcing me to do it, because I don’t like going blind by inferior light. I am also too stupid to buy the enviro-nutcases’ argument that CFLs have a lesser impact on the environment because I understand that they take more energy to manufacture and have a worse impact on the environment upon disposal than incandescent bulbs do. Hmmm, maybe it depends on your definitions of “smart” and “stupid” as well as your definition of “better.”

So yeah, the American consumer is smart enough to make these decisions, and the American government is not. Simple as that. Unless you want the federal government that did such a bang-up job on the aftermath of Katrina to be in charge of your purchasing choices, I’d think you would be on OUR side in this. (And before you point out that Bush was in charge of the Katrina effort and try to blame it all on him, note that 99% of the bureaucrats who carried out the federal Katrina effort are lifetime federal bureaucrats who predated Bush and will still be working for the federal government long after he leaves office. Large bureaucracy = inefficiency, red tape, and stupidity. Duh.) Seriously, do you want every aspect of your life to be like a visit to the DMV? Long lines, lots of forms, apathetic government employees, clearly stupid requirements, etc, etc, etc? Seriously?

aero on July 15, 2008 at 6:19 PM

Dave Rywall on July 15, 2008 at 5:15 PM

If someone is so stupid that paying an arm and a leg for energy won’t convince them to lower their consumption, then why in the world would anyone think that a message from Bush would do the trick?

1. People have used significantly less energy since prices skyrocketed.

2. Bush has already mentioned using less on several occasions. Could it be that the man with a 30% approval rating just doesn’t get listened all that much?

3. If people are too stupid to know to turn off the AC when they leave the house or drive less, then why would they be watching the news in the first place? Turning on a TV might have warned them about not getting those mortgages in the first place.

Seriously that statement is as illogical as the bumper sticker that reads: CALL 555-555-5555 IF YOU ARE ILLITERATE.

Esthier on July 15, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Rywall,
“they need information in order to make smarter choices ”

Do you honestly think that people in America don’t understand that the longer their lights are on, the higher the utility bill? That the more they drive, the more they pay for gasoline? ANd you are ignoring the fact that every newspaper/magazine website has articles on saving energy; TV news programs periodically have segments on that subject, and the utility companies send it out every month with the freakin’ bill. But no, you would rather blame it on the President.

I wish McCain would deliver a Kennedy-esque energy address that sets this goal: By the end of his second term, the USA will be a Net Energy Exporter, on a scale that will render OPEC completely irrelevant. Mere energy “independence” is too small a goal - Become the world’s largest and most powerful energy exporter and see where our economy goes.

You’re right, they’re not better, but even if we all did what Dave “so smart” Rydell suggests and bought the mercury infested light bulbs it wouldn’t register as a blip on the energy radar. Not the least of the reasons being that one has to use gas to drive to the local dump to dispose of them in a way that prevents the poisoning of dogs and children and satisfies the EPA.

So you want everyone to get a toilet that you have to flush twice instead of once?

Johan Klaus on July 16, 2008 at 9:25 AM

After 9/11 when Bush implored the nation to go out and spend money and get life back to normal and send a message to the turrists, you all nodded your heads and you did it. In other words, you were all INSPIRED to do something by your president. None of you said f**k off don’t hold my hand I can figure that out on my own.

Now, when it comes to energy use/conservation, all I do is suggest that the president should take the high road and continue to INSPIRE the people to do the right thing and conserve/use energy smarter as a small part of a new energy strategy and you all freak out like little wet pantsed school children whining that this would mean the government is babysitting you. Ridiculous.

Johan Klaus -

Ever hear about a dual-flush toilet? No? Didn’t think so. I have one. The button for #1 uses LESS water to flush because you don’t NEED a much water to do so. It has worked perfectly since I installed it last summer. When’s the last time you researched low water use toilets? Never? Well, until then, perhaps you should stfu because you look like a fool who lives 20 years behind the rest of the industrialized world.

Dave Rywall on July 16, 2008 at 9:51 AM

The fact is, the unwashed masses of any country are very, very simple and they need information in order to make smarter choices about how they live.

The majority of the population of every country on earth is comprised of uneducated and underinformed people. And there are exactly as many simple dim bulb liberals as conservatives in each and every one. Does this reality not align with your butterflies and lollipop dreamworld? Awww, so sorry.

Dave Rywall on July 16, 2008 at 9:51 AM

You are right; I am not a toilet specialist.
First off, I have got a water well and I live in a free country. Second off, have you researched the safety and disposal of neon bulbs? Third off, how practical is your electric car? Forth off, why do liberals always resort to name calling?

Johan Klaus on July 16, 2008 at 10:22 AM

1. A water well has nothing to do with the common sense of having a dual flush toilet. But yes, you do live in a free country and if you wish to be a water pig, then that is entirely your choice.

2. I know nothing about neon bulbs.

3. I use public transit or walk to and from work. I drive once every two weeks in a Honda CRV.

4. Name calling has been around since humans began speaking. If you think liberals do it more than those occupying other parts of the political spectrum then you’re not a very observant person.

Dave Rywall on July 16, 2008 at 10:28 AM

I walk to work every day. You mentioned the bulbs. I observed you calling names.
P.S. Do you need to borrow some of my water that is on my land at my house? Freedom and economics is still the best way to drive conservation. It always works.

Let me know when you’ve figured out how to capture the energy generated by flushing toilets so it can be used to power my car.

Sir Napsalot -

My original post:
“You would think the president would encourage the people to be smart about energy use. I heard there were these things called leadership and common sense. But no - he shrugs it off saying people will figure it out for themselves. Amazing.”

Uh, yeah. I was suggesting that he use his position to lead/inspire the country. No back paddling here.

Of course he hasn’t; he’s one of the unwashed masses, like the rest of us.

You rattle on about inspiring people to change through leadership, yet you’re lecturing, calling names, and cursing at us. How many people here have you inspired to buy a new toilet today? How is your attitude inspiring anyone to change?

fourstringfuror on July 16, 2008 at 10:56 AM

In the U.S., free enterprise allows people to make a profit at conservation. That works much better than the government doing it and it is a lot less expensive { thinking taxes} and a lot more efficient.

Dave Rywall on July 16, 2008 at 11:09 AM

It’s not reality, Davey, although you yourself are a poster boy for ignorance, what with all the factually deficient statistics you pull out of your ass in a singularly unimpressive demonstration of your own intellectual abilities.

I can’t speak for the rest of the world but, contrary to your assertion that the majority of us are uninformed simpletons, 80% of Americans have at least a high school education. Surely the vast majority of Americans (even those who didn’t make it through high school!) have the tools to figure out that, say, if you drive less you’ll use less gas and save money.

The last thing we need are inspiring speeches from the Oval Office about energy conservation. We need action from our elected representatives, and that action must include drilling. The ball’s in Pelosi/Reid’s court, and the, er, smart money is on those who let us drill here and now, not those who suggest we wait for the wind.

A high school education is a bare bones set of knowledge. How come so many people still can’t find Iraq on the map? Conservation goes beyond driving. Most people don’t give a second thought to water use, electricity use, etc. They take it all for granted.

And I never said inspiring speeches was the whole plan. Go look at the drilling stories on Hotair. You’ll see I’m 100% in favour of drilling up north, down south - anywhere the oil is, as long as it’s done responsibly without raping the ecosystem for all eternity. And obviously drilling isn’t the be all end all answer to America’s energy woes.

My son’s six cylinder pickup gets almost thirty mpg. I think that you will find that most people in the U.S. conserve. It is economically beneficial to do so and I do not think that the U.S. has a monopoly on people who are wasteful.

Johan Klaus on July 16, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Monopoly? Hell, no. Canada is right up there in the top 5 per capita use of energy. We’re wasteful pigfaces up here.

I just looked at two of them, the IBD poll thread and the Mother Nature is the Greatest Polluter thread, and find nary a comment from you. Why don’t you provide some links to your pro-drilling comments so we can verify?

Drilling is the only available option to transportion cost. Just the mention of the lifting of the drilling band by president Bush has caused oil prices to come down.
