Reporter to Bush: Why don’t you formally inform our moron public that they should use less gas?

If we can’t be trusted to glean satirical intent from an over-the-top New Yorker cover, how can we be trusted to buy less of something when the price goes up? It’s Daddy President 101, with the added nuance of the media demanding a catalyzing call for action from a guy with an approval rating south of 30 whom they assure us no one in their right mind takes seriously. If he had issued some sort of formal statement inspiring the predictable semi-snarky headlines (“Bush: Conserving Energy Is a Good Thing”), the nutroots would have goofed on him for his chimplike mastery of the obvious and Slate’s ultra-keen “Bushisms” feature could have knocked off early. But look on the bright side. Next year, we’ll be treated to headlines like, “Obama: Turn Off the Light When You Leave a Room.”

Shut your mouth! BO will be a historical footnote next year (please, pretty please with sugar on top).

HawaiiLwyr on July 15, 2008 at 1:51 PM

When he said it was presumptuous to tell Americans how to live their own lives, 90% of the mouths in that room dropped to the floor.

Great answer, Mr. President. Nothing to lose, so nail those vultures.

MadisonConservative on July 15, 2008 at 1:52 PM

Darn it. I was waiting for someone from the government to come and balance my checkbook, but it looks like I’ll have to do it myself.

locomotivebreath1901 on July 15, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Someone needs to find a clip for Mark Smith here of a Franklin D. Roosevelt-style “fireside chat” speech Jimmy Carter gave one cold winter’s night many moon ago, during a height of a past energy crisis, where he showed up wearing a sweater, smiling that big toothy stupid grin of his and urging all Americans to turn down their thermostats to 68 degrees so as to use less energy. Only problem was that Americans back then were smart enough to see how stupid of an idea this was and pretty much cranked the thermostat up anyway.

Point is asking Americans to cut back on energy use is a dumb idea, and Mark Smith and the AP should know that. People already know to cut back and have been. Problem is that Congress is doing zilch as far as trying to solve the current crisis, like passing resolutions to open drilling offshore and in locations here in this country where we know there is oil, as well as build more refineries. Why doesn’t Mark Smith ask something like that to Harry Reid next time he runs into him?

pilamaye on July 15, 2008 at 2:00 PM

The guy gets called on to ask a question of the President of the United States, during a live televised press conference, and he asks the President why he hasn’t dictated “formally” to the millions of driving Americans to use less gas. No question about anything else going on in the entire world, or right here in America, that Americans can’t figure out or don’t already know for themselves.

Wow. How the hell did that guy manage to swing a Whitehouse Press Room Seat? What an idiot.

SilverStar830 on July 15, 2008 at 2:00 PM

I love it when he gets in the face of the press corps. Makes them look so stupid

spacekicker on July 15, 2008 at 2:00 PM

When the price started going up, I figured out all by myself that maybe I would save some money of I used less gas. I also decided to buy CFL lights and install an electronic thermostat that helps reduce energy costs. I am considering an electric Motorcycle for my 2 mile a day commute to work.

And somehow I did all of this without the government being involved.

Here is the liberal mindset in a nutshell:

1) Price of gas going up - Need more government.
2) Price of gas going down - Need more government.
3) Price of gas stays the same - Need more government.

In reality, the free market system has always been the best way to regulate a limited commodity. Price goes up, less is used. We don’t need government overlords to ration us, we just need the govt out of the free market.

Let’s see what the left wing scab media do with this quote, none of them will even mention it tonight - “American people are plenty capable and plenty smart people, that’s why I was so much in favor of letting them keep more of their own money”.

He may not be an elegant orator but if this one line doesn’t resonate with people nothing will. This as opposed to BHO in effect saying he’ll make the American people suffer for their own good, the good of the rest of the world, and the good of the Government.

Too bad this GWB hasn’t been around as much as I had hoped…but he’s here now!

Skywise on July 15, 2008 at 2:02 PM

I don’t really know what else Bush can say about the price at the pump. LMAO, I forgot, we went to war in Iraq for their oil…uh huh, riiiight.

In reality, congress’s double speak, and romance with the environmentalists, plus having their heads where the sun don’t shine, have put us in this position. All I keep hearing since the 70s Jimmy Carter foul ups, is this country has to become independent of foreign and/or Mid East oil. WHEN, in the next life!

Califemme on July 15, 2008 at 2:03 PM

The answer is not for conservation in as much as increase the supply by becoming energy independant. If we conserve too much, the economy will shut down. Is that what we want. We run on energy and will destroy the very fabric of life as it is by going down that path. That question proposed by the reporter, does not answer all the ramifications of what would happen if we dropped our energy consumtion significantly. Be careful for which you hope for buddy!

I just saw a story on FNC that made me mad. There are billions of barrels of oil that are located in areas leased by oil companies that cannot be drilled because of environmental lawsuits and regulatory agency interference. This story should be spread around far and wide. This is what we need to be focused on (imho).

At $4+ per gallon, do the lefties really think people are out there wasting a lot of gas?

This is a subject that really drives me nuts. I’ve run into several people who say “Why isn’t the government telling us to conserve gas?” or my favorite, “If we would have listened to Jimmy Carter back in the ’70’s we wouldn’t have this problem today.”

President Bush was pushing the ideas of freedom, liberty and responsibility…..concepts that are totally foreign to today’s media.

The only thing that would have made that better? President Fred Thompson punching that reporter for being stupid.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 15, 2008 at 2:22 PM

1. It’s absolutely a good idea to turn off lights when you leave the room. Everybody should do that.

2. The headline would be more like: ‘Bush’s response to energy crisis: why don’t people drive less?’ There’s nothing wrong with using less of anything if the price goes up but no politician can say so in public. If the Democrats can’t say that (and much of their base likes the idea of conservation), why do they expect it of the Republicans?

freevillage on July 15, 2008 at 2:22 PM

The day Obama tells me to turn off the light when I leave a room is the day I’ll turn on two in another. At work of course. My own light bill has already topped $500 once this summer. Just doing my part.

SilverStar830 on July 15, 2008 at 2:00 PM

Because that’s how liberals think about environmental issues. It’s all about command and control. “Tell people” to stop using so much darned energy and to turn their thermostats back, just like Obama said to do. If the liberals were in there, they’d impose a “luxury tax” on people using too much energy, and would start metering people’s air conditioners. (I think in California, there was actually proposed legislation to do just that.)

Now get you back on your bicycle, SilverStar! No car for you!

Outlander on July 15, 2008 at 2:26 PM

Broadcasting news takes quite a bit of energy, as does printing useless fishwrap such as the New York Times.

Think of how many trees would be saved if the New York Times ceased to print newspapers.

And the “journalists” who used to work there can labor on wind farms, when they’re not picking up bottles and cans on the side of the road.

They can be paid in hope and change.

Grow Fins on July 15, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Wish more of this stuff would get airplay on the news channels. Bush has never been an idiot. He has some faults, one of which is being a poor communicator (for a POTUS). This is the kind of response that would increase his popular support, and help make a dent in the current appeal of left-thinking.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 15, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Sadly, I anticipate the AP article from this story:

“Bush, appearing unconcerned about America’s addiction to oil, laughed off a suggestion that he urge Americans to conserve energy at home and stop driving their gas-guzzling SUVs. Instead, Bush continued to call for more raping and pillaging of the environment to extract the last few barrels of oil and put off America’s day of reckoning until his successor is in office.”

rockmom on July 15, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Part of Ron Fournicate’s exciting new advocacy journalism philosophy for the AP. What Ron didn’t tell us - but we might have gleaned for ourselves from casual observation - is that the AP advocates would be leftist imbeciles, like this beaknosed clown Smith.

Jaibones on July 15, 2008 at 2:36 PM

You cannot “conserve” your way to a robust economy. Americans need cheap plentiful energy in order to do that. This is not beyond the comprehension of liberals, its simply anathema to what liberals want. Liberals have worked hard to create this current energy crunch, the last thing they want is to produce more energy and solve the problem they have worked so hard to create.

Liberals must create a big problem before their proposed “fixes” will be accepted by the public. Their goal is to tax energy at much higher rates so they have that money in their pockets to buy more votes and power. Liberals don’t care about the environment, that’s just their excuse, that is their guise. What they really want is increased revenues, more control and power. All of their plans come undone if we simply produce more energy.

Okay, Diane Feinstein (D) just said that there has been no increase in demand for oil this year, and therefore we must examine other hypotheses for the increased price, like the devalued dollar (true enough, good on her), and the speculators!

Senator Feinstein (D), I’m pretty sure demand is increasing in China and Russia. They’re like really big countries! Not little ones like Iran!

Instability in oil producing countries is more than enough to explain the price of oil, not to mention the obstacles to produce more in this country.

Speculators, Feinstein? Speculators are trying to make money on where the price of oil will be, if they really thought it was going to drop they would simply sell short and still make a bundle.

How can he get away with such ignorant statements? How many Liberal Econ professors are out there biting their tongues over that comment, willing to be silent just to have the Messiah in the WH?

DerKrieger on July 15, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Which is it?

Grow Fins on July 15, 2008 at 2:28 PM

I wouldn’t say clueless, but I do believe we’re a nation a whiners.

The recession isn’t completely mental, though it is aided in large part by news channels telling us every day that we’re headed for a recession. Anyone who hears that enough will start to worry about buying something and may actually decide not to spend money they were going to spend, which will in turn cause a recession.

I don’t think we’re in a recession and that people are worrying too much about this, but I wouldn’t say it’s all in their heads either.

Either way, saying American are whining about a fake recession isn’t the same as saying Americans are too stupid to figure out that they should use less gas. The price at the pump is a fairly loud wake up call to anyone with a motorized vehicle.

Just a few days ago everyone on the right was patting Phil Gramm on the back for “telling the truth” that the US public is a bunch of clueless whiners when it comes to the economy. Which is it?

Grow Fins on July 15, 2008 at 2:28 PM

That’s my point. Too often here people act just like the Left and it’s a major mistake. This is just another opportunity for me to remind people to leave the condescending bashing of the American people to the Left. We conservatives believe in the wisdom and decision making ability of the American people.

Sir Napsalot on July 15, 2008 at 3:07 PM

He didn’t say they were clueless whiners.

It’s not clueless to think there’s a recession when the liberal media keeps telling you there’s a recession. How many horror stories about having to give up $4 lattes and organic, locally-grown food can people take before they give in to the hopelessness of the situation?

He did say they were whiners. And he’s about half right. The half that votes Democrat IS a bunch of whiners who believe that gummint can and should protect them from bad things in life; even the risk of bad things. And/or he conflated the liberal media with the citizens.

Which, as Napsalot said, has nothing to do with objecting to gummint Taking More Control Of Our Lives For Our Own Good. Except the liberal/Democrat attitude that gummint is the be-all and end-all.

misterpeasea on July 15, 2008 at 3:16 PM

Is Sen. Feinstein really this stupid? Are all Democrat politicians really this stupid?

NoDonkey on July 15, 2008 at 2:50 PM

yes.

I don’t think we’re in a recession and that people are worrying too much about this, but I wouldn’t say it’s all in their heads either.

Esthier on July 15, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Inflation and a falling dollar have MANY people worried. The fact that my money doesn’t go as far as it did three years ago REALLY worries me. Textbook Recession? Maybe not. Economic woes and bad economic fundamentals? Definitely.

pullingmyhairout on July 15, 2008 at 3:18 PM

When did he find time to go to business school?

DerKrieger on July 15, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Better question (cribbed from Rush): WHY did he bother to go to business school, or any school at all? When he enrolled, it wasn’t going to help him that day, or tomorrow, or next week, or next month, or next year. Why would he do such a thing?

And why save money for his kids’ college? That money won’t do any good today, tomorrow, next year, or in 5 or 7 years. It’s a complete waste.

Don’t confuse the American people with the media.

Leave the America bashing to the Left. Trust in your fellow American. It’s the most important thing that separates us from the Left.

TheBigOldDog on July 15, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Te Libs should just come out and admit that they want gas prices high to force people out of their cars, out of the suburbs, into the cities, into electric cars, out of their SUV’s etc. because it’s painfully obvious they have no intention of allowing us to increase our own vast supplies of oil.

DerKrieger on July 15, 2008 at 3:22 PM

pullingmyhairout on July 15, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Yes, that’s what I meant.

Americans aren’t necessarily wrong to be concerned, but I do think in general Americans whine too much–but that’s not a specific comment about finances. That’s just in general.

TheBigOldDog on July 15, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I’m really not bashing Americans. Sorry if it came across that way.

they cant even balance their own , well when it comes to our tax paying dollars .

TheBigOldDog on July 15, 2008 at 3:15 PM

The American people will likely soon elect Obama president. I believe the American people have every right to make their own decisions and use their own wisdom, but I don’t believe so much in their wisdom that I’d actually put my faith in it or substitute it for my own.

We Americans are a good and generally proud people, but we’re not perfect.

Ha! So sad cause it’s so true.

Next year, we’ll be treated to headlines like, “Obama: Turn Off the Light When You Leave a Room.”

You’re a funny guy, AP.

We’ve managed to muddle through this far, though we’ve made some big ol’ mistakes.

And we are definitely not perfect, but what is the alternative to believing in the wisdom and decision-making ability of the American people?

There’s not one, that I could stomach.

…OK, how about a conservatocracy?

A Limbaucracy?

That is why constantly talking DOWN to us grates every single time. Libs haven’t learned that part yet. They tried, believe me they tried. But they can’t help themselves.

If 51% of the American people pull the lever for Obama I don’t think that equates to THE American people electing Obama. No majority, I don’t care how large, has the right to impose socialism and bondage to government on the rest of us. That’s the difference between Conservatives and Liberals. One favors liberty for all, the other favors bondage for all.

DerKrieger on July 15, 2008 at 3:48 PM

And we are definitely not perfect, but what is the alternative to believing in the wisdom and decision-making ability of the American people?

I think you’re misunderstanding me. I don’t want to usurp the will of the people. I just don’t personally put my faith in it.

That’s a personal opinion, not a government action.

If 51% of the American people pull the lever for Obama I don’t think that equates to THE American people electing Obama.

So you don’t believe presidents are elected by the American people? I don’t get what you’re saying.

According to CNN (not exactly a right-wing source), the Chinese are putting new cars on their roads at the rate of 10,000 every day. Unless all those new cars are being powered by Fruit Loops, they’re probably creating a pretty serious increase in China’s oil demands.

AZCoyote on July 15, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Esthier on July 15, 2008 at 3:51 PM

I don’t think DerKrieger was talking about the voting process but a philosophical difference in the left and right. However presidents are not really elected directly by the People. Here’s a link that will help explain it…or confuse the hell out of you.

Oldnuke on July 15, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Ok, I drive less by working at home as often as I can. I use regular gas in an economical car. I recycle. I have thermal windows and weatherstripping, and extra insulation in the attic. All my appliances, including a 2-year old furnace and air conditioner, are “energy stars”. I have some biohazardous bulbs in my hallways and porch fixtures. I wear exra clothes in the winter and not much in the summer because my house is always too cold or too hot, you’re welcome, libs. My toilet, dishwasher and shower are all stingy, and my water heater has a blanket on.

Meanwhile, I knew, we all knew, back in ‘72 that we needed to be less dependent on foreign oil. Was I supposed to get my own? I thought we delegated big jobs like that to professionals. Is it too much to ask my elected officials to shut up about my energy use, and do a little something about the supply?
