Obama purges site of surge criticism

posted at 9:15 am on July 15, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Better late than never, I suppose.  Barack Obama has purged his website of criticism of the surge, and has now credited American troops with the security gains of the last year.  The move comes as John McCain repeatedly points out that Obama opposed the surge in January 2007 and said it would make the situation worse:

The presumed Democratic nominee replaced his Iraq issue Web page, which had described the surge as a “problem” that had barely reduced violence.

“The surge is not working,” Obama’s old plan stated, citing a lack of Iraqi political cooperation but crediting Sunni sheiks – not U.S. military muscle – for quelling violence in Anbar Province.

The News reported Sunday that insurgent attacks have fallen to the fewest since March 2004.

Obama’s campaign posted a new Iraq plan Sunday night, which cites an “improved security situation” paid for with the blood of U.S. troops since the surge began in February 2007. It praises G.I.s’ “hard work, improved counterinsurgency tactics and enormous sacrifice.”

The scrubbing took place this weekend, and it may signal more changes — or it may just be a way to prep for his upcoming trip to Iraq. If Obama appeared before the troops who defeated the terrorists in western Iraq, he may not get the reception he wants if his website kept discounting their hard work in the face of a despicable enemy. While the Sunni sheikhs have been a critical part of the success in Iraq, it was American tenacity which convinced them to switch sides.

The campaign says they regularly update the site to “reflect changes in current events”.  However, the Obama campaign has yet to acknowledge that the changes came from a strategy he opposed and that he predicted would fail.  Even more remarkably, he hasn’t changed his policy to incorporate the “changes in current events”.  Instead, he just retooled his demand for timetabled withdrawals with a sop to the troops.

What changes will we see on the Obama site when he returns from Iraq?  And will we have to compare caches in order to discover them, as the Daily News apparently did?

Obama’s upcoming trip to Iraq may very well force him to flip on this issue as well (or at least it should IF he really does adjust his policy to fit the reality of the situation). If you though the reaction from the Left regarding hi flip on FISA was damaging to him just wait until he flips on Iraq. It’s going to be an interesting show to watch.

Yakko77 on July 15, 2008 at 9:28 AM

LOL

He is going to adpopt McCain’s position on Iraq. Just like John Kerry adopted Bush’s position on Iraq but expected you to beleive he was going to do it better than Bush. The similarities are spooky. It is as if I have seen the same general election campaign for the last three cycles…

Theworldisnotenough on July 15, 2008 at 9:30 AM

Gotta love Obama’s “new” politics. When he is proven to have been dead wrong about something very important, don’t admit it, just erase it and pretend it didn’t happen.

You have to give B.O. credit for being consistent. When he advocates change, he means it. He changes, then changes again, then changes again, and again and again and again….

Kind of like he is trapped in a quantum loop of sorts.

Just too bad that loop can’t change into a black hole and make him vanish altogether.

pilamaye on July 15, 2008 at 9:38 AM

Hmmm…

So I guess having done that, he’ll vote against the unFairness Doctrine when the DNC lays seige to D.C. in November.

Balanced views? I think not.

madmonkphotog on July 15, 2008 at 9:41 AM

He can scrub the site, but it will be even more interesting to see how his people try to scrub the convention of all those delegates who flocked to him as the Second Coming precisely because of his stance on Iraq. The pros may comprehend the need for triangulation, but my guess is the majority of fanatical supporters won’t.

CyberCipher on July 15, 2008 at 9:49 AM

I think he’s panicking.

Notice we still don’t have any June fund-raising totals from the guy?

I read a lot of wondering as to why he would write an op-ed r about Iraq in his Mouthpiece newspaper before he even goes. My guess is because he was trying reopen the ‘roots wallets. My guess is his funds have dried up so completely that he felt he had to reassure his base that he was for surrender then, he’s for surrender now, and he’s for surrender forever.

But he’s also still got to try to appeal to enough cartoon-laughing, Bible-clinging, gun-toting rubes to win, so he does a little site scrubbing as well.

“Judgment to lead.”

Lead his dewy-eyed followers right up the ramp and over the shark.

I just hope he doesn’t completely tank before he actually gets the nomination.

Retroactive flip-flopping.

Tony737 on July 15, 2008 at 9:56 AM

I didn;t think about it until Bigfoot’s posting above — but it’s scary how close this is getting to Orwell’s Doublethink:

The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them . . . . To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.

Ferris on July 15, 2008 at 9:57 AM

As time goes by Obama looks more like Bush II than McCain. The left knows it is all a charade, but isn’t being a liberal who has no conception of reality a charade as well?

volsense on July 15, 2008 at 9:58 AM

Rich Lowry summed it up nicely in his Townhall.com column:

“Obama spokesmen now say everyone knew that President Bush’s troop surge would create more security. This is blatantly false. Obama said in early 2007 that nothing in the surge plan would “make a significant dent in the sectarian violence,” and the new strategy would “not prove to be one that changes the dynamics significantly.”

Now that the civil war has all but ended, he wants to claim retroactive clairvoyance. In a New York Times op-ed laying out his position, Obama credits the heroism of our troops and new tactics with bringing down the violence. Our troops have always been heroic; what made the difference was the surge strategy that Obama lacked the military judgment — or political courage — to support.”

lorien1973 on July 15, 2008 at 10:05 AM

Wouldn’t it be refreshing, and in keeping with his self-made image of being a “different” kind of political leader, if he came back (or announced from) Iraq, “I was wrong about the surge, and am glad to see I was wrong.”

It would be refreshing to see that from any politician.

Still wouldn’t vote for the man, since he really is proving himself to be just another liberal Chicago politician.

Obambi nearly reminds me of the dreadful Culture Club hit of the 1980s:

Commie, commie, commie, chameleon.

Now all the audacious weather vane need do after his pretentious Ich bin ein Waffel speech in Berlin is to deliver the Gettysburg Address in fake beard and stovepipe hat or Patton’s speech to the Third Army complete with pearl handled revolvers and riding crop. Before you know it Obambi may even impersonate King Friday’s speech to Mister Rogers’ Land of Make-Believe to get a cheap vote.

viking01 on July 15, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Obama in early 2007: The surge will never work. Vote for me and I’ll pull our troops out of Iraq’s civil war.

Obama now: The surge worked so well that the troops aren’t needed in Iraq. Vote for me and I’ll bring them home.

Obama is now trying to ride the success of a strategy he claimed would fail, to bask in the victory of the troops and his opponent’s strategy without giving either any credit. Attitude, never gratitude.

As duplicitous as it is, Obama’s POLITICAL strategy might work if the media continues to cover up what REALLY happened in Iraq over the past 18 months–that the change in strategy brought the Sunnis to our side against Al Qaeda, and gave the Maliki government the strength and unity to chase out rebels of all stripes.

McCain needs to explain (through ads) that it was his strategy (and that of General Petraeus) that turned things around when things were going badly in Iraq, and that we need a Commander in Chief with military experience willing to listen to his commanders on the ground if other threats arise (Iran, for example), not a “sunshine soldier” ready to jump on the victory bandwagon when others have done the tough stuff.

LOL. wow that’s an understatement,

there is and will be no respect accorded this fake no matter how much the media pushes. Its going to take a lot more than a pretty speech by the community activist to win them over. In fact, there is no way Obama can overcome the character deficit he has. This isn’t “fixed” with policy. Its the character stupid. The left just does not get it.

The trip to Iraq is a photo op for an audience that does not include the military or the defense establishment. The military knows when it is being used as a prop.

At the risk of offending some Midwestern sensibilities around here, take it from me the military is going to wipe its collective ass with Obama. The level of vitriol in the ranks against this effete anti American moron is huge already.
