Video: Revenge of the nerd

Trapped on line for hours in sweltering heat, terrified at the thought that his store’s allotment of the many, many, many units sold this weekend would be gone by the time he made it to the counter, doubtless having faced this same line of inquiry by wise-asses at every Star Trek and Star Wars convention he’s ever been to, one brave dork finally reaches his breaking point.

The correct iPhone-fanboy answer to the reporter’s question is, of course, “You mean in real life?”

If the reporter had asked the guy if he had a naked avatar, he’d have never gotten him to shut up!

BacaDog on July 14, 2008 at 4:07 PM

This is journalism to you? Awesome.

bigbeas on July 14, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Wow, that reporter is a jerk.

Adventures in jackassery.

CP on July 14, 2008 at 4:11 PM

It isn’t exactly journalism, but inquiringly minds did want to know.

Spirit of 1776 on July 14, 2008 at 4:13 PM

How much stock do you hold in Apple? Allah?

Free advertising.. must be great for them.

Chakra Hammer on July 14, 2008 at 4:15 PM

THe reporter should have focused the question a bit more, as in ” Do you prefer me in you face or owning an iPhone?”

bbz123 on July 14, 2008 at 4:16 PM

one brave dork finally reaches his breaking point.

great line AP! I can hear it being read by that guy who does the movie trailer voice-overs…

I would never buy an apple product because they couldn’t make a capable windows program if their lives depended on it, they make the programs buggy on purpose then blame the Windows, not to mention the built in spyware that apple puts into their products….

Bonjour.

I don’t normally like to give fuel to the California bashers, but there is no doubt that local news in LA is the most god-awful in the country.

Nessuno on July 14, 2008 at 4:22 PM

The Line Strikes Back.

This why you never, ever mock the obsession of us nerds. This could be your fate.

I wonder if the reporter would have felt the same way if all those people were waiting in line to drop $500 to get to meet Obama and get their photo taken.

RobertInAustin on July 14, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Of coarse they’ve seen a woman naked. They surf pron all day long. You know they want the phones so they can surf for it on the bus on the rare occasion they leave the basement. It’s not like they need to call anybody.

Channeling Bart Simpson’s voice: Losers!

TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 4:23 PM

This was hilarious. I think it was great reporting.

You’ve got to be kidding. This is coverage / criticism / snarking of a cultural phenomenon. It’s all fair use.

If we blog about the ideas behind the latest popular Hollywood movie, does that make it free advertising?

The only thing I’ve learned from the iPhone posts is ….. not to buy an iPhone. And I am otherwise a fan of Apple products (iMac, iPod, software). I’m just too cheap to buy into the mobile data service plan.

Are you COMPLETELY daft??? Apple *invented* windows, back when Microsft was still farting with DOS. As for security leaks, that’s MS’ middle name…

Never a good idea to insult the people you’re about to interview.

You’re right…but when have reporters ever been smart enough to realize that? Ever.

Trapped on line for hours in sweltering heat…

Then why in the hell is that guy wearing a hat with ear flaps? Oh, right…that was in SoCal…

I love seeing barry voters turn on each other over really important issues.

peacenprosperity on July 14, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Totally not the point, but…

Was the newswoman on the left screen Michaela Perrera? She used to co-host “Internet Tonight” on the old ZD TV computer-geek channel… I think it’s now called G4 and focuses on videogames now. Back in the day it was all about building computers and the latest tech news.

I was very much in love with her and Kate Botello.

I loves me some smart geek-chicks.

The folks at Xerox PARC would be amazed to learn Apple *invented* windowing technology. No, the real answer is Jobs just stole it first from someone else before Gates could. Oh wait, “licensed” it after being threatened with a lawsuit for stealing it. But hey, they did “innovate” the Trashcan and screamed all the way to a 5% market share.

Faith1 on July 14, 2008 at 5:13 PM

Why do reporters think they’re God? Go up to anyone in a line and mock them for whatever they’re standing in line for, I’m not sure what that reporter expected, if he’d asked me those questions they probably would have had to bleep my answers. Jerks.

4shoes on July 14, 2008 at 5:20 PM

That’s because there aren’t enough Apple devices to make it worth any hacker’s time. You can bet that will change with all of these iPhone’s being sold. It won’t be long before some guy in Maylaysia named Phuk Meh Running has your identify and is buying things off the intertubes from Victoria’s Secret and LL Bean.

The movie “Anchorman” was not a documentary…

…or was it?

scottm on July 14, 2008 at 5:56 PM

wise-asses, dork, iPhone-fanboy…

Geez AP, your first day back to work and you’re ALREADY putting yourself down…

RMCS_USN on July 14, 2008 at 6:04 PM

“This is journalism to you?”

Buddy, I ask that question a thousand times a day to CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, The NY Times, The LA Times, etc, etc….and I am still waiting for them to answer it.
Good luck getting one yourself.

Planet Boulder on July 14, 2008 at 6:07 PM

While I don’t see the point in standing in line for a phone either, I haven’t got a leg to stand on.

I went to Trilogy Tuesday when The Return of the King came out, and I was furious with the friend who went with me for not showing up at 9 a.m. to get good seats. We got there at ten, and while he kept insisting that we weren’t late, I made him park the car while I zipped over to the theater to see what the line was like.

There were only about 75 people ahead of us, so he lived to tell the tale. And never doubted me about Tolkien geeks again.

Meryl Yourish on July 14, 2008 at 6:07 PM

Even worse than asking that asinine question is that he didn’t have the courage to stand there and talk to “the nerd.”

Let’s get his picture in wikipedia under “prick.”

Dr. Manhattan on July 14, 2008 at 6:09 PM

Eric Spillman is a prick.

I stopped watching KTLA morning news years ago. I pretty much stick to KCL9 for local news.

The Ugly American on July 14, 2008 at 7:51 PM

KCL9 = KCAL9

The Ugly American on July 14, 2008 at 7:53 PM

Looked to me like 40-50 people waiting in line to pay two hundred bucks for a phone.

Recession.

SlimyBill on July 14, 2008 at 7:57 PM

The guy must have been wiped out from standing in line so long. Even the nerdiest nerd should know the answer to that question is “Yes — your mama.”

NoSquids on July 14, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Instead of asking him “Have you seen a woman naked?” I wish the reporter had inquired “Is it okay to ask a woman to pull your finger on a first date?” I mean, I really want to know!

radjah shelduck on July 14, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Would’ve worked better if he had a dog puppet.

Jim Treacher on July 14, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Hoo-yeah!

I’ve seen women naked – and nice see-thrus too!!

In real life!!!

Thanks so much for posting this!!!! Now I must have an iPhone at some point in the near future!!!!!

HotAirJosef on July 14, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Does that include your sister?

Some people are embarrassing a$$wholes when they get a microphone in their hand.

Travis1 on July 14, 2008 at 11:19 PM

That reporter is a hero.

I’m sick of all the other reporters asking the same old fluff crap to these morons who spend all night and day in line for a phone.

He should have asked how many still live with mommy and daddy while he was at it.

NoSquids on July 14, 2008 at 8:03 PM

That’s OK if the questioner is 18 years old.

The response to KTLA’s Eric Spillman should be: “Yes — your wife.”
