Usually it bugs me when he knocks lefty bloggers for foul comments, just because if you have a site with any kind of traffic you’re bound to have a crank infestation to some degree. This time is different. For one thing, as chronicled by Patterico in excruciating detail this weekend, the LAT moderates all comments; everything that appears is apparently read and approved by an editor — or disapproved, in the case of Patterico himself chiming in to call the cretins over there dicks. Beyond that, it’s no secret per the sheer volume of death-wish crap after a prominent conservative dies that some lefty sites have an especially nuanced relationship with commenters like these. O’Reilly goes out of his way to congratulate Arianna on keeping HuffPo clean this time, but she’s only reached that point now because her site’s so notorious for vileness on these occasions that they don’t even bother opening comments anymore.
Good work by Patterico, though, in riding the Times. Hard to believe Fox would have picked up the story without him. Exit question: What’s with all the tough-guy talk from O’Reilly about making people “pay”? Does he think someone willing to piss on Tony Snow’s grave is going to relent now that they know they’ve managed to upset Bill O’Reilly?

O’Reilly is a self-important blowhard. But he does have a talent for spreading sunshine…the disinfectant sort.
RIP, Tony, and thanks for everything.
Pablo on July 14, 2008 at 10:34 PM
I don’t often appreciate Bill O’Reilly of late. Tonight, he was pretty darned good.
MoCoM on July 14, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Well done again Bill. It’s great to have you on our side.
wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 10:46 PM
I had the same reaction to that “make them pay” business. Make who pay? The anonymous posters, or the LA Times? Good luck on either score.
I appreciate O’Reilly, especially his relentlessness with child abusers and the judges that enable them, but there’s really no getting around the fact that he’s a pompous blowhard.
Nice to have you back, Allah.
Infidoll on July 14, 2008 at 10:47 PM
You have to be a pretty low piece of scum to write bad things about Tony Snow.. I didn’t know that he had any enemies.
Chakra Hammer on July 14, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Agree, O’Reilly is only tolerable in small doses, but this had to be said, and he said it well. I hope he keeps it up.
If I had a subscription to that rag, I’d cancel it now.
MrLynn on July 14, 2008 at 10:51 PM
The internet can be one hateful and ugly place. Disturbing what happens when you give people anonymity.
terryannonline on July 14, 2008 at 10:55 PM
“anyone who does this will pay.”
O’Reilly has no other power to do anything .. except mention these people and what they say on the national forum that he has. “Pay” as in, shine the light of day on their comments. Maybe their boss will see a comment O’Reilly shows and find a way to fire them. Maybe someone who spews vitriol and hatred to a recently deceased man who died from cancer will be recognized by their family or friends and be known for the lousy pimple on the arse of humanity that they are. O’Reilly is not being a ‘tough guy,’ he is hurt, angry and wishes that he could do something but of course he can’t.
He’s expressing his outrage over people who deserve scorn that they will most likely never get. I don’t see any of these vermin either watching O’Reilly, or relenting from their hate. A little less hate to Bill O’Reilly however, would be appreciated. But I don’t expect this here.
wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Lefties tend to be disgusting.
drjohn on July 14, 2008 at 10:59 PM
As well he should, Tony Snow was an honorable man and deserves respect. Hell, Tim Russert received respect from HotAir; what is it with these dems?
carbon_footprint on July 14, 2008 at 11:01 PM
I like it when evil is allowed to express itself for all to see. Anonymity gives them the license to speak honestly and truthfully about what they feel. Rather than silence them and drive ti underground, it’s better to have it out in the open so we all know what we are really up against.
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Bush Derangement Syndrome does not stop at one man, or the people he selects to work with. Not even his family. Not even in times of personal tragedy.
Tony Snow was and still is their enemy because of the man he worked for. It’s a mental illness.
wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 11:03 PM
“Scrubbed the hateful comments from her website” when they didn’t allow comments in the first place because they knew they would be vile? What a joke. He is an idiot for not even pointing out that fact, or being able to figure it out in the first place.
Vigilante on July 14, 2008 at 11:06 PM
Anonymity also shows how cowardly they are. Do you think they would say these kind of things in regular conversations with friends, family, co-workers, etc? No.
terryannonline on July 14, 2008 at 11:06 PM
He’s talking about making the venue’s pay. He’s going to use his bully pulpit to bludgeon them every chance he gets.
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Nice to learn that the LATrine will have a new boss.
jgapinoy on July 14, 2008 at 11:08 PM
And you know that because…?
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:08 PM
That makes sense. He’s been on the NY Slimes’ case for weeks.
jgapinoy on July 14, 2008 at 11:10 PM
He or someone viewed that web page days after the event. This is the same web site that has more than it’s share of hate filled commenters that often require their offensive and embarrassing comments to be scrubbed. They do this in a way that is not transparent to the observer. He’s ignorant of the facts, Vigilante. He is not an idiot.
wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Wait. Your first comment was profound. Your second was goofy. You don’t think usernames make people “braver”?
jgapinoy on July 14, 2008 at 11:12 PM
I don’t know….do you think these people that leave comments on a the LA Times tell others they are glad a former press secretary died?
terryannonline on July 14, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Nice to see the Light of truth shining brightly
on the caring,compassionate Left!
And I agree with some of my fellow commenters,
anonymity shows the real truth of these people!
canopfor on July 14, 2008 at 11:13 PM
For some, sure. But I’m not past believing that these people say these things when around like minded people all the time.
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:13 PM
I wondered about that as well. And I wish him luck in that endeavor. Honestly I love Bill for bringing this type of stuff to light. The Dhimms get away with this type of BS way too often.
I like Bill quite a lot, I turned my husband onto him, which was a feat, he’s a bit skeptical, and I’m not the most adept at explaining subjects at times.
4shoes on July 14, 2008 at 11:15 PM
Absolutely. Go to the nearest liberal college hangout and listen. You’ll hear that and then some I bet.
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:15 PM
These are people who physically attack conservative speakers on stage and people are actually surprised they are glad Tony died and are willing to say so in the open?
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:19 PM
O’Reilly has no love for anyone who besmirches Tony Snow’s character. (Really does anybody think it’s okay? Regardless of what you think of O’Reilly, he’s got a 150% captured audience…and I am with him in my desire to strangle those who write for/cheer for the LA Times when they write about Tony Snow.)
Keep it up, Bill O…. I’m with you 200%.
MsUnderestimated on July 14, 2008 at 11:19 PM
TheBigOldDog is on to something. O’R will make the LATrine & Kos pay, not the anonymous creeps.
jgapinoy on July 14, 2008 at 11:20 PM
When around ‘one of them.’
Maybe they don’t engage in the same classless behavior in mixed company as they do on line or in the safety of like minded people. So, could be a little bit of both, depending on the environment.
wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Even more than that, hatred is a sickness of the soul. It’s an epidemic among leftards.
infidel4life on July 14, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Yes! I have some friends who are extremely liberal, and they know I’m conservative, that doesn’t stop them from saying the most ignorant, mean crap I’ve heard. It’s like they can’t help it, it just comes spewing out, then they chuckle to each other. My husband usually asks a single question and they shut it, because they have no answer to a real question outside of their ignorant talking points.
4shoes on July 14, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Well, I took a second look at some of the commentators that Patterico posted and I’ll admit some left their full names for everyone to see. So you probably have a point. People who know these people probably know about their hate. However, many only put their first name or used alias like “Hell’s Receptionist” and “Bush hater.” I don’t know how out in the open “Hell’s Receptionist” and “Bush hater” are with their hate.
terryannonline on July 14, 2008 at 11:24 PM
Wow. That linked page really was worth the read.
wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 11:26 PM
I just wanted you to question your assumptions. It’s dangerous to make assumptions about these people.
TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 11:27 PM
The Fark thread on Tony Snow had a huge number of vile and hateful comments as well, but they’re unmoderated and thrive on a bad attitude. That doesn’t make it acceptable in any way, but it shows that if the LA Times’s comments section was comparable to Fark’s and the LAT is moderated, the LA Times might as well just go ahead and change their tag line to “It’s not news, it’s the LA Times” and make their transition into Fark Lite complete.
aero on July 14, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Beauty AND brains…errr…hold on…where is she…?
C’mon, they cheered when he was diagnosed, cheered when he died. No big surprise. I’m saving my outrage for later.
tlynch001 on July 14, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Is he bloviating or serious? The only way to make them “pay” is for people to stop paying for a subscription or a daily edition from a newstand.
SouthernGent on July 14, 2008 at 11:36 PM
I have to admit I am a very regular O’R viewer, and also that I often laugh out loud at his rants. He does think himself so very important and powerful at times. I caught the ‘they will pay’ comment tonight myself and thought…..how? But there was no doubt he was mad as hell at said comments and striking back in anger and grief over the passing of his friend. I admire him for his loyalty. And, if I ever find myself in a situation of real injustice, good heavens i would surely want that man on my side! Coz he will get on a case and hammer it and worry it to death. Just ask those at the NYT or the Governor of Vermont for example. :D
dustoffmom on July 14, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Bingo!
These people are truly insignificant, and only come out under the guise of anonymity. They hide behind their keyboards, because if confronted in real life, they would cower and crawl away.
The tolerant ones, the left, have been reduced to hurling vile insults from afar. Unable to compete in the arena of ideas any longer, they simply shout down anyone who doesn’t agree with them, and smear.
It’s a shame these people can vote.
rightside on July 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM
I’ll give HuffPo credit for removing the vile comments that were up there before. Does not excuse the daily marxist (daily kos) for their vile comments.
nazo311 on July 15, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Bill’s a good guy, even though he loses it every now and then. Every side needs a few bullies!
WisCon on July 15, 2008 at 12:48 AM
Gawker is another left wing hate site that is celebrating the death of Tony Snow. Remember this is the same site that called Tony Snow when he was diagnose with cancer a “Human Being” because he worked for the Evil Bush Administration.
ZoneDaiatlas on July 15, 2008 at 1:11 AM
is the picture of Tim Curley distorted? It looks kind of like the ones FNF did a week or so ago.
clghitis on July 15, 2008 at 1:17 AM
The left shows it’s lack of class.
Johan Klaus on July 15, 2008 at 1:36 AM
Kudos Patterico….nice work.
The Ugly American on July 15, 2008 at 1:48 AM
FWIW, Bill posted the email address for the Tom Curley, the AP’s CEO on his website. His email is tcurley@ap.org.
Here is the email I sent him. It will be summarily ignored, but I’m hoping this jackass might get some inkling of a clue if he gets enough angry email. I did attempt to be polite.
On the other hand, these are the same guys who give terrorists free publicity for beheadings, so I’m not exactly optimistic here.
fiatboomer on July 15, 2008 at 1:49 AM
I would suppose that people like this associate only with people who are every bit as demented and souless as themselves so yeah, I think they do.
I wouldn’t imagine any decent person being able to stomach such cretins presence for more than a few moments after they started spitting their bile.
SuperCool on July 15, 2008 at 1:58 AM
AP + LA Times = Toilet Paper after warm beer and sloppy joe night.
Seven Percent Solution on July 15, 2008 at 2:29 AM
One of the most disturbing comments I’ve ever read. Care to publish your contact information, Terryann, and shed the shackles of your anonymity? “Anonymity” is not the problem, it’s the Liberal deconstruction of everything that ever made USA a great civilization. Great that is, while it lasted.
Fishoutofwater on July 15, 2008 at 3:48 AM
All said, without disagreeing with one word Rightside wrote! I miss the days when you couldn’t “Google Earth” a video of my front door.
Fishoutofwater on July 15, 2008 at 3:53 AM
Was anyone else bothered by the lack of copy editing in the graphics?
“Cheap-shots”? The invasion of the illiterates is becoming very depressing.
Prufrock on July 15, 2008 at 5:59 AM
I rarely watch the Factor since Michelle left the line-up but I can understand O’Reilly’s disgust. Tony Snow was widely admired and it’s a shame some commenters have gone too far expressing their hate. In the end, they will “pay” but I doubt Mr. O will have much to do with it. Karma will collect on this tab.
Zorro on July 15, 2008 at 6:46 AM
Sites like the Daily Kos and the LA Times should be hacked out of existence! I am furious beyond measure with the fact that lunatics, slimeballs, morons and degenerates get daily exposure on these sites, ranting and raving like out of control asylum inmates, and no one at either of these sites is monitoring what is being posted. If any, Kos relishes getting trash like this. This is not just being disrespectful, this is the nadir of evil! ENOUGH!
pilamaye on July 15, 2008 at 6:58 AM
I think the tough guy act may be related to the fact that Mr. O’Reilly considered Tony Snow a close friend. He’s obviously outraged that a good guy was trashed by these loons and concerned that Mrs. Snow and her kids would be troubled by this garbage. Mr. O’Reilly is probably just intending to shine a bright light on the loons and the entities like the Los Angeles Times that enable them.
Jill1066 on July 15, 2008 at 7:13 AM
Thanks, Patterico and Bill. It helps that you said it. The vileness needs to be isolated and universally repudiated.
petefrt on July 15, 2008 at 7:30 AM
These people are hateful, paranoid and believe deeply in a vast right wing conspiracy. To them O’Reilly is a powerful high ranking member of that conspiracy and he has just told them that they know who they are and there is no place to hide. I’m betting many of them are now living in fear waiting for the inevitable knock on the door from the BushHitler thugs coming for them. Of course nothing will happen to them and in a few weeks they will be all happy in the knowledge that they once again outwitted the stupid hacks and thugs of the vast right wing power elite.
jmarcure on July 15, 2008 at 7:40 AM
I like Bill O’Reilly too. He isnt afraid to confront anyone and doesnt mince words. I also respect his outrage at Vermont and his work with Jessica’s LAw.
becki51758 on July 15, 2008 at 7:49 AM
Liberalism has always been and will always be about emotion not facts. They can’t help themselves! They hate and it shows. Hopefully Americans see their ideology for what it is. I think that is why they are summarily rejected on a national level more times than not in election after election after election. Shhhhht! Don’t tell them though! They think that stomping their tiny little feet and banging their tiny little fists in acts of tiny rage will actually get people to support them!
sabbott on July 15, 2008 at 7:59 AM
Satire, right?
Just checking first. :D
dustoffmom on July 15, 2008 at 8:15 AM
Actually I’m not anonymous. You just used my name, Terry Ann, and if you use click on my link it goes to my Web site, it tells you which state I live in. I have pictures of myself in my Web site. So I’m not hiding under a guise of anonymity. I’m out in the open.
And why do you have to go the extreme? Because I’m not giving out my address, therefore, I’m anonymous.
Never in post did I say we should do away with anonymity or anything of that sort in the post. I think it could be a positive thing. Allows more freedom. But let’s face it has its bad qualities. I truly doubt some people would post some of the stuff they do if they had their name behind it.
That’s all. Don’t read too much into comments, OK.
terryannonline on July 15, 2008 at 8:44 AM
Nope. I worked with a guy that thought just that way and I have a relative that thinks Bush has personally ordered taps on his phone. The relative is very active in the Internet culture but feels that his constant changing of handles keeps the Bush lackeys confused. He once went off line for a few weeks because of some comment made about the DU by a Fox News person and he feared the Bush thugs had him in their sights. He couldn’t stay off line because it’s the only place where he can find others that know the truth. The people posting the trash are basically crazy people or trolls trying to egg on the crazies. My collage attending son and his friends are pretty conservative in their views, even more so than I and he has told me how some of his friends go trolling around DKos and DU trying to inflame the crazies by out doing their crazy.
jmarcure on July 15, 2008 at 9:16 AM
Oh, I KNOW that there are indeed many people who absolutely believe things like this, and run to the lefty web sites for validation from the other loons….I was just checking to see if one of them had wandered over here and busy posting that drivel. As one of the ‘Bush-Nazi’s” myself I just didn’t want to start pushing back if it was not warranted. >grin

“O’Reilly goes out of his way to congratulate Arianna on keeping HuffPo clean this time, but she’s only reached that point now because her site’s so notorious for vileness on these occasions that they don’t even bother opening comments anymore.”
She should go the extra mile and close comments entirely, along with her uninformed and idiotic screeds.
Better yet, shut down the whole worthless web site. Would be her biggest contribution yet.
NoDonkey on July 15, 2008 at 10:08 AM
When I picture a DKOS daily reader I see a member of the “alternative lifestyle” community that is probably at a hip local coffee shop for other like minded “folk”. I’m seeing lots of piercings, tattoos and very little employment among the group but mommy and daddy parcel out enough green to keep junior in bad clothes, bad hair, apple hardware/software and every protest of Republicans. Nazis, Dictators and Christians possible…

nazo311 on July 15, 2008 at 10:23 AM
This whole idea of respect for the dead is ridiculous. Respect is earned, people seem to think that respect should be gratuitious. If the man shows you no respect by being a propagandist, for an administration that lies and steals from you, he deserves no respect in death, whether he did it with a smile or not is irrelevant. It is not hatred, it is giving the man the “respect” he deserves, the respect he gave you. Many salesmen have tried to screw you over with a smile on their face. If he wanted respect he could have spoke out, kissing the collective @sses of the beltway elite does not make someone a nice guy. Just from a conservative angle the man served as a mouthpiece for one of the most destructive administrations to conservatism in my lifetime. Thanks for socialized health care and this global warming nonsense because their failure to be conservative when they had the majorities is what killed us, those that made excuses for them were the enablers of this. Tony was an enabler. All his death means is one less enabler. And moreso for Tony because some of his earlier work showed that he had some good in him, but where did it go?

I think making them pay is done by shedding light on it, shouting that they are scum from the rooftops. Good job, Bill.
I used to watch Bill O every night, but I’ve gotten rather sick of having to watch all the blurred out women’s body parts, or worse having to turn the DVR off quickly when my ten year old comes into the room to tell me goodnight so she doesn’t ask what the blurred stuff is. That said, I do really appreciate that he exposes the radical liberal judges, educators, legislators, etc., particularly in light of child safety/welfare cases. He does us all a good service in many ways. Just enough with the tabloid crap!
