The gallery of rejected Obama New Yorker covers

posted at 6:54 pm on July 14, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via the Standard, the amateurish photoshoppery partly spoils the effect but number two could plausibly have been a Barry Blitt first draft. (Bonus irony points for the fact that the source image is a beloved leftist mock-up of Bush as a Talib.) If you missed Jeff Goldstein’s and Karl’s takes on the left’s agony over this, treat yourself now. This from JG:

The irony here — and it is choice, believe me — is that this satire was intended as an attack on the right. But now, because the artist tried to attack the right in a way he believed clever and ironic, he is being attacked by the left — his own tribe! — for launching an attack on the right that those on the right, the left is coming to fear, could use against the Obamas, either out of idiocy or malice.

This position, of course, assumes that those on the right are so stupid or unworldly that they aren’t able to suss out satire directed their way — and this is (deliciously!) the fear of some on the left, one born of their own prejudices. These leftwingers, of course, “get it” themselves, so it is really not the cover itself that angers them. Rather, these would-be pragmatists worry that the illiterate righties who people their fevered dreams might not. And then what?

Presumably the rejected covers should be suppressed on the same theory, as the primitive conservative brain that struggles with satire can hardly be expected to grasp satire of satire. I can’t decide, though, whether by running it the New Yorker is paying the average newsstand passerby a compliment by trusting them to get the joke or whether it’s actually a supreme example of liberal cocooning, following from the premise that no one but a leftist bien pensant would so much as glance at a copy of the magazine and therefore there’s no reason to worry that the cover might be misinterpreted. And even if you are one of the benighted few — not all of whom are Republicans, I hasten to remind you — who are reserving judgment on the rumors about Obama, wouldn’t some of the heavier-handed elements of the image clue you in that there’s humor at work here? A portrait of Osama in the Oval Office? Michelle O with a machine gun slung over her shoulder? If Blitt wanted to make this joke subtle enough that it might plausibly be taken seriously, he could have done so. He didn’t.

Update: Here’s Ryan Lizza, who wrote the New Yorker story on Obama, echoing another point made by Goldstein: Since when does satire have to be vetted to make sure it’s not misunderstood by the lowest common denominator?

Update: A commenter reminds me that Jon Stewart caught flak from HuffPo for the same idiotic reason a few weeks ago.

Meh. I think the cover was created to sell copies of the New Yorker.

And I think the New Yorker is a rag compared with what it used to be.

Simple IS as Simple DOES.

Actually, Benedict Arnold was of a higher character than the average Obamabot.

A picture of his as Superman with a comet of Kryptonite labeled “Issues” flying directly towards him would’ve been funnier. I guess that’s why it wasn’t used.

SouthernGent on July 14, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Reminds me of the HuffPo column recently calling out John Stewart for daring to make fun of Obama, lest it give credence to the smears coming from those mean ol’ Reich Wingers.

There are a bunch of funny ones on the best satire website, too.

If the Left had solid answers to Obama’s real problems, they wouldn’t be obsessing over a magazine cartoon.

pedestrian on July 14, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Lampoon and make jokes about someone as inexperienced and clueless as Obama actually becoming President at a time of war..

Make fun and lampoon Obama about raising Capital Gains Taxes in the face of a recession..

Make fun and lampoon Obama over all of his Flip-flops..

Chakra Hammer on July 14, 2008 at 7:25 PM

The thing about satire, as with any form of comment, is that the theme must have been in the mind of the creator first. Where did it come from?

OldEnglish on July 14, 2008 at 7:25 PM

Jenny, I’d never hurt you. If it weren’t for this war and that lying SOB Johnson.

lorien1973 on July 14, 2008 at 7:26 PM

Make fun and lampoon Obama about his energy policy as gas prices soar over $4 a gallon..

Everytime you fill your gas tank remember that Obama will NOT allow the United States to drill for more Oil.

The left has no sense of humor about itself.

Funny, huh?

profitsbeard on July 14, 2008 at 7:29 PM

So here’s what’s funniest about this:

I watched nearly three-quarters of the video before I’d had enough of the sound of tinkle running down Chris’ leg. But that was enough to get the jist from all of them that they in their sophisticatedness they certainly knew that the whole idea of the Benevolent Holy One not being sufficiently patriotic or soft on terrorism is, of course–they rushed to reassure each other–absurd.

Except that they never quite said why.

No one has ever said why. Did Barry not hang with leftists his entire life? Is it his many and frequent writings and ruminations on the greatness of America that make this idea so absurd?

Is it the long record of accomplishments he has in the public arena or his years of service in the armed forces?

What happened here is that Blitt took careful aim at us on the right and wound up shooting the Left right in the ass. If this were truly over the top, it’d just sell magazines and the Left would have their laugh at us rubes.

But it hit just too close to home. It resonated because people see the Obamas in those images. The main thing that got captured is the condescending smugness of the pair of them.

It resonated because to the vast majority of Americans it was simply funny.

And it’s the oldest rule in any endeavor: Once they start laughing at you, it’s over.

Time to stick a fork in Barry O. He’s done.

Heh, I knew Goldstein would get it right.

Welcome, back, Allah!

The fact that so many on the right praise the New Yorker cover as absolute truth speaks something to the satire the magazine was trying to portray. You guys are clueless and you got caught up in the joke almost justifying it.

It’s satire in the same sense of the satire done by SNL about the way the Press was treating Obama. It resonated with people and it changed the game to a certain degree. This is no different.

The gallery of rejected Obama New Yorker covers

This is nothing but an over reactive, leftist, super sized whine. PUH-LEEEZE tell me if nobody has never seen any anti-Bush and/or Cheney hate cartoons? If you haven’t, then must be living in a cave. The Internet is loaded with hate Bush crap, and some of it is pretty bad stuff.

TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Well, not exactly. It’s satire in the sense that the NY’r was pandering to the elitists (its readership, it hopes) who view the right as stupid rubes who would look at the cover and not realize that the magazine a) has been carrying O’s water since first they got the chance; and b) those who didn’t read the 15-page article which can be summed up as “Obama’s a run-of-the-mill political Chicago hack with a whole lot of skeletons in his closet, but we’re here to tell you that it doesn’t matter, because, hey, everybody does it, and has to do it, or they don’t get elected.”

Nichevo on July 14, 2008 at 8:15 PM

TheBigOldDog on July 14, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Agreed. Satire with a point on it. SNL wanted better play for Hill and the New Yorker wants to frame criticism of the Obamas as wingnut hate speech.

Gotta love the law of unintended consequences tho.

melkor on July 14, 2008 at 8:15 PM

The New Yorker has long slimed anyone who disagrees with the “progressive” views of the sophitcates who write for the New Yorker. Recall back in the late 1990s, the New Yorker ran a long, tiresome story on Israel’s then PM Bibi Netanyahu. The article attempted to psychoanalyze Bibi and made all sorts of amateurish psychology about Bibi and his father. The article portrayed Mr. Netanyahu as some sort of Dr. Strangelove who was willing and able to destroy the world in order to carry out his apocalyptic vision. Arafat came across as saintly in the article. The events of the last seven years proved Bibi’s predictions to be quite realistic. There was never an apology from the New Yorker. To the New Yorker, Bibi Netanyahu was everything that its editors detested. Bibi is tough, unapologetic and proud to defend Western values. And that makes him insane to the editors of the New Yorker.

And the plot thickens,

and it royaly backfires for the

Vast Left Wing Conspiracy Kabal!

So,the lefty’s are saying they were trying
to stick it to the right, and attempt some
form of a verbal brushfire!

And Obama,”I have no comment”,well bloody duh,
no sh!t,its your side that attempted a failed
besmirchment of the Hope ande Change!

But all along, the Libs were hoping this was going
to fire up the Republicans, again, the left’s mission
failed!

“It is intended to be a comment on a comment”,
absolutely brilliant, like OBL picture in the picture,
outstanding attempt again by the left—-to smear
the right!

“Its attempting to invalidate the RIGHTS portrayal of
Obama”

Really, thats what the right thinks, that Obama is a
gun totin Muslim,or are they just beside themselves
that this went south for them this quickly!

And again, the Left are attempting a broad brush stroke
of painting Republicans as racists, and it ka-blewyed
in their faces!

It is awfully Liberal of these Leftys to get into a
Republican brain and try and force this conclusion!

The Liberal Left are the race baiters, not the right,
the right see Obama as unfit and un-qualified,and
has absolutely nothing to do with the colour of the
candidate!

But,rest a sure that was the only purpose of this
racist picture that the left wanted to imply, after
all its the Liberal Democrats who are trying to make
this election all about race!

And It backfired, just like Bill Clinton’s”Fairy Tale”
remark!——————————————-:)

Well I went and had a look. Here’s my personal favorite, posted by a doubtless charming lib’ral elitist by the name of ddlrid at 7:25 this very evening.

A satirically equivalent cover would be:

*McCain laying in bed kissing one of his captors while being handed a ‘get out of jail free card’

*Cindy McCain on the other side of the bedroom fighting W for all of the pills that fell on the floor

*McCain’s ‘illegitimate half-black’ daughter trying to bust out of the bedroom closet with her birth mom

A cover like THAT would be comparable.

You realize this is the same Phil Gramm who was the biggest cheerleader for deregulation of the banks. The same deregulation that allowed the risky predatory loan practices which resulted in massive foreclosures and now banks like IndyMac are going under. Um, the bit that I don’t get is that most of the themes reflected in the New Yorker cover were actually introduced into the mass public debate by Hillary’s primary campaign, i.e. other Democrats, not Republicans. It has been my impression that the Republicans have been careful not to push the “smears” for fear of being seen to be race-bating, taking the low road, etc., etc. Am I wrong?
