Clinton supporters want floor vote

It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings. — Dan Cook

Operation Chaos may not yet have finished, according to CQ Politics.   While Hillary Clinton negotiates for a place of honor at the convention, some of her followers have a more important role in mind for her.  They want an open floor vote for the nomination — and think that Hillary could win it:

She may have given up, but a few of Hillary Rodham Clinton ’s people haven’t.

The senator from New York is said to be negotiating a respectful presence followed by a graceful exit from next month’s Democratic convention, and last week the party announced that Barack Obama would formally accept the party’s nomination in the stadium built for the Denver Broncos. But there are Clinton supporters clinging to the hope that if her name is placed in nomination and the roll call of the states is conducted, she might — might — still win.

Heidi Li Feldman, a Georgetown University law professor, insists there’s still “no way of predicting” the outcome should there be a fair vote. That’s because Obama has not secured enough pledged delegates to ensure the magic number of 2,118 needed to claim victory; the Illinois senator has gone past that benchmark only with the pledges of about 390 superdelegates — and they can change their minds at any time up to the moment they cast their ballots.

Feldman plans to put her money where her mouth is.  She raised $100,000 for Clinton in the primaries, and now she wants to raise more to run ads demanding a free vote on the nomination.  She and Marc Rubin have formed the Denver Group to pressure the DNC to meet their demands — and says she will not vote for Obama in the general election without a floor vote in Denver.

There could be danger for Obama in a floor vote, albeit rather microscopic.  His long series of flip-flops have damaged his credibility and taken the enthusiasm for his candidacy out of the base.  The FISA vote particularly enraged the activist base of the party, and Hillary’s opposition may have rekindled respect for her among former Obama enthusiasts.  As Feldman and CQ point out, the superdelegates could conceivably still vote for Hillary in an open ballot, and the netroots might find that a pleasant alternative to the Gaffemaster.

At least it would guarantee network coverage, now at risk thanks to the DNCC’s last-minute change for the final night’s festivities.   A floor vote would make Denver much more interesting — perhaps more interesting than the DNC would like.  And if the unthinkable happens and Hillary wins the nomination on the floor vote, the meltdown that would follow would ensure wall-to-wall coverage.

Awesome. Let’s do this thing.

Great. And here I thought that the only ‘operation chaos’ still going on was between the people who think that McCain is as bad as Obama and rational conservatives. Nice to see that there is some life in it left over there as well.

wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 10:59 AM

The wall to wall coverage of the convention would be interrupted by riots that would make Rodney King proud.

pedestrian on July 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM

I look forward to Teddy Kennedy’s position on this. When he lost in the primaries to Carter in 1980, he wanted the delegates to be “free to vote their consciences” at the convention.

(That the voters whose wishes the delegates were supposed to represent might not like this didn’t enter into Teddy’s thinking.)

Wethal on July 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM

One thing going for her. Hillary has Malkins.

OT. I was behind a car this weekend with two bumper stickers. One said “Obama 2008″. The other said “I Brake for Frogs”.

Need I say more.

fogw on July 14, 2008 at 11:06 AM

HILL’S people have become non-existent. Why do you think B. HUSSEIN wants to move his ACCEPTANCE to the stadium??? Well, think about it, if 3 or 4 thousand HILL SUPPORTERS walk out of the convention center, the whole country will notice. If the same 3 or 4 thousand leave THE STADIUM, hardly noticed… GET THE PICTURE???

pueblo1032 on July 14, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Doubtful the Democratic party leadership will go for the floor vote… That would be contrary to their nature.

We better hope Her Majesty doesn’t pull this off. Considering the lethargic McCain campaign enviorment, it would be a slam dunk in November and I don’t mean that in a nice way.

It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings. — Dan Cook

I would be remiss if I didnt point out that Dan Cook, who was a San Antonio sportswriter, died here in San Antonio last week.

The real quote is “the opera ain’t over til the fat lady sings” which is actually more fitting to Hillary/Obama.

I think a portion of the black electorate might stay home – just enough to give McCain the edge. Hillary’s supporters might vote for Obama just because of the abortion vote. I don’t know if an issue like affirmative action is enough to bring out an angry-at-Hillary black vote. AA is slowly going away with state initiatives, anyway.

McCain’s campaign has been awful, but not that many people are paying attention right now. People are on vacation, they had their fill of politics with the primaries.

Come September, if McCain is still ditzing around – yes, either Dem could knock him off.

Wethal on July 14, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Hopefully the floor fight includes pool cues and broken beer bottles.

McCain is acting as if this marathon is a marathon. And some people expect him to be sprinting.

McCain could be ‘ditzing around’ in september, but I think I’ll actually wait until september. We’ll find out then.

Let freedom ring.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 14, 2008 at 11:34 AM

She may have given up,

I have never thought she gave up. She has done just enough to make it look like she’s a team player. She could have released her delegates at any time and has chosen not to.

Wethal on July 14, 2008 at 11:16 AM

I’d go further than that – I think the fallout among black voters would be huge. Even if it were possible to repair that damage there wouldn’t be enough time to do it. There is so much anti-Clinton sentiment in both parties now that I don’t think she could win at this point, although I think that she could have won if she had been the clear nominee from the beginning.

The Dems will take their chances with Obama because they can’t afford to alienate black voters, and because the current party leadership wants the Clintons O-U-T.

wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I agree. If his new campaign staff get things organized, start setting up GOTV networks around the country, and sharpen his message, well, we’ll see.

McCain has been doing the tortoise-marathon to Obama’s hare-sprint. McCain has been steadily raising money, and I think Obama’s June numbers (due by 6/20) will be revealing.

Wethal on July 14, 2008 at 11:37 AM

McCain should just say nothing. Let Obama flip flop on every stand he has made to trick enough voters to nominate him. Most of his victories were before anyone knew who the hell he was. That is different now. The charade is over and anything can happen. Something as evil as the Clintons cannot be diminished by a rookie that is a Daly/Soros protege.

I wonder if Vegas has odds on whether or not rioting will erupt from the DNCC. I do not wish that on Denver but given the divide still in place between so many Dems I don’t think it’s beyond doubt.

Yakko77 on July 14, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Beyond that, if Obama doesn’t win in the first round, by a substantial margin, he comes out of Denver as damaged goods.

MarkTheGreat on July 14, 2008 at 11:51 AM

jeff_from_mpls on July 14, 2008 at 11:52 AM

volsense on July 14, 2008 at 11:37 AM

That does make sense. Perhaps McCain doesn’t want to whack him too hard before he’s nominated for fear the superdelegates et al may start some serious reconsideration. McCain probably would much rather face Obama than Hillary, so may be holding fire till after the convention. At least, I hope so.

a capella on July 14, 2008 at 11:53 AM

If Hillary wins, black activists riot.
If Obama wins, women activists walk out.

I love it when a plan comes together.

MarkTheGreat on July 14, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Hmm.

I am guessing that after this has passed, that all of the democrats are going to be voting for the democrat. And that’s most likely going to be Obama. So in that case, the upset women who wanted Hillary are just going to end up voting for their man. Still, it’s nice to see that their ‘chaos’ hasn’t ended quite yet.

wise_man on July 14, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Go Hillary supporters! Don’t let that waffling Chicago hack steal your girl’s nomination. Do whatever it takes.

AZCoyote on July 14, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Seriously though, I want the nags to force a floor vote, and I want Hillary to win it.

We all know Democrats are good at hanging errors they themselves commit on Republicans (the racist attacks against Barack Obama, the bureaucratic incompetence of the Governor of Louisiana and Mayor Nagin of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, etc.)

Now, if Obama were to lose the general election at the hands of John McCain, the MSM and leftist hacks won’t even wait till the votes are counted to start the meme that the Republican hate machine lynched him. They will compare it to an assassination, just like Bobby Kennedy, they’ll say. Bloody towels will be waved. Days of rage will be proclaimed. You know it’s going to happen!

I want to see the battle fought out and finished as an internecine democrat party battle. Oh, they’ll still try to find a way to blame Republicans, but the democrat party’s deception will be far more transparent than it usually is.

Please, Hillary supporters, you deserve a womyn in the White House! Fight for her! Fight to the end! Where can I send money?

jeff_from_mpls on July 14, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Denver Police may have to gear up that supposed crap cannon of theirs. If the thing exists and if things get ugly on that floor, the police just may decide it’s time to have everyone in that convention center Squeeze The Charmin!

Oh this is going to be great!

pilamaye on July 14, 2008 at 12:06 PM

With the polls being even and BHO true idenity coming out everyday. It maybe the best thing for the dems to nominate hillary.

adamsmith on July 14, 2008 at 12:18 PM

This is the gift that keeps on giving.

I read on one of the internet sites that the DNC was not going to give Hillary much fact time unless she gets her debt retired before the convention. Then supposedly they moved teh date up to 7/15. And more supposedly, in the last 3 days, these PUMA types (party unity my ass Clinton supporters), have raised $10million over the net. Now if this is in fact true, my guess is this terrifies the DNC. This is going to get very interesting this month.

karenhasfreedom on July 14, 2008 at 12:20 PM

This story brings the Denver controversy tally to seventeen…

Screwing Hillary out of Michigan and Florida votes, have clearly proven, that the Democrat party has been hi-jacked by far left wackos, and the NAACP. Since the 2000 election, and the Dems rant of “Bush stole the election,” is minor compared to what the DNC Rules Committee did to Hillary and them awarding HER votes won, to their selected Messiah. The foaming at the mouth, and snarling dogs were hell bent on getting even with somebody, and they ended up eating one of their own. The Dem convention have all the earmarks, of trench warfare!

byteshredder on July 14, 2008 at 12:25 PM

You know, I still can’t get my head around the DNC giving Michigan delegates to Obama, when he wasn’t even on the ballot to earn votes. You know the DNC’ers feel even more strongly.

steveegg on July 14, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Ha! Hillary must not be getting much dough from Obama’s backers to pay off her debt.

That’s all this is about, folks. Hillary’s done this year and she knows it. She just needs to pay back that $20 million so she can start her 2012 campaign the day after Barack loses.

rockmom on July 14, 2008 at 1:27 PM

I’m surprised that there has been no comments today on the Green party choosing the cutest little communist in America for their presidential candidate.

(That’s what Boortz calls Cynthia McKinney. Yes, she’s baaaack, again.)

MarkTheGreat on July 14, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Hillary is probably out of the game. But given the history of the Clintons, one has to wonder. The interesting question in my mind is this: does Hillary have some piece of information about Obama, some “August surprise,” that she could release before the convention, to make him look unelectable to the superdelegates? I’d think that such a release would have to be part of any strategy to get her the floor nomination.

I’m certainly going to be watching to see if some horrible Obama information gets into the papers before the convention. If it does, I think we’ll know where it came from.

Splunge on July 14, 2008 at 3:19 PM

A floor vote would be good for the environment, it could save the planet, it could stop global warming climate change, do it for the children.
